3 Dear Parents, Guardians, Campers, and Friends, A LETTER FROM THE RESIDENT CAMP DIRECTOR Welcme t the 2019 Summer Camping Seasn with the YMCA f Glendale. This year we are celebrating ur 94 th year f camping n Catalina Island and we are thrilled t welcme the next generatin f campers t ur little island paradise. Beginning in 1926 the Glendale YMCA has prvided children frm all ver the wrld the experience f a lifetime with a week-lng summer camp at Camp Fx. It is ur gal each year t prvide yur child with a safe and fun-filled week f swimming, games, archery, kayaking, rck climbing, snrkeling, stand-up paddle barding, and s much mre t make an impact in their life that will create memries lasting a lifetime. Many campers since 1926 and beynd still remember these time-hnred traditins and cntinue t keep the camp spirt alive as they are nw sending their wn children and grandchildren t camp, where the traditin cntinues each year. This year we are als pleased t annunce a new pprtunity fr ur campers with the additin f a Muntain Camp Adventure at Camp Circle V in the Santa Barbara Muntains, near Lake Cachuma and Slvang. Be sure t read abut this new mini resident camp adventure fr ages 8-17 directed by myself, Ray Gatr Calame, and Glendale YMCA Camp Fx staff. With the additin f this camp we wuld als like t ffer a Surf and Turf pprtunity fr anyne wh attends Circle V and then attends a Fx Camp this summer will get a $50 credit twards their Camp Fx experience. Travel t Camp Circle V will be by charter bus leaving frm Freemnt Park in Glendale n Sunday, June 23, 2019 with check in between 8:30 t 9:00 am in the park and returning at 5:00 pm n Thursday, June 27, Any additinal questins can be answered with a call t my direct line (818) This new additin is very exciting fr us and we hpe that this will give mre campers the pprtunity t experience a Y Camp. The missin f the YMCA is t put Christian principles int practice thrugh prgrams that build healthy spirit, mind, and bdy fr all. Our camps exemplify the YMCA s 4 cre values by creating a welcming envirnment fr all. As a YMCA prgram ur gal at Camp Fx is t supprt and reinfrce family values. Campers may express their wn beliefs and daily rituals during all camp activities and may have the pprtunity t further imprve themselves in all aspects f their lives. Our camps are run by a grup f individuals wh cntinue t amaze me every year and I can say with full cnfidence that ur Directing and Cunseling Staff is ne f the best camp staffs in the wrld. With years f experience under their belt, ur Directing Staff truly understands the imprtance f ur missin and cntinues t prvide their time each year t make a difference. Behind them are a grup f amazing cunselrs, many wh nce were campers themselves. They are carefully selected, screened, and trained t help yur child have the best pssible experience. All the directrs and cunselrs are vlunteers whm sacrifice their time and share their enthusiasm t create a camp envirnment like nne ther. As stated earlier we strive t prvide the best experience fr ur campers every year. In the 2018 Camp Seasn we were extremely prud that we were able t ffer 5 Week-Lng Summer Camps and 1 Labr Day Weekend Family Camp fr mre than 1500 campers. This year we hpe that we can match that success and cntinue t prvide a hme away frm hme fr years t cme. As a reminder I wuld als like t pint ut that any family that decides t attend ur Labr Day Family Camp, Aug. 31 t Sept. 2 and has a camper attend ur yuth camps will receive a $10 reductin fr family camp. In cnclusin, we wuld like t thank yu fr yur cntinued supprt each year and we lk frward t a fun-filled week with yur child that will prvide lasting memries and friendships. The Vlunteer / Staff Partnership Our YMCA camp cmmunity has prvided a unique relatinship between the emplyed staff and participating members. In many cases, participants that have been invlved as members in their yuth have grwn fnd f camp and g n t be the leaders that are verified t run the camp prgraming. Thrugh this, ur cmmunity is able t create an pprtunity fr ur past participants t becme ur future leaders wh help t develp a philsphy that allws us t maintain high quality prgraming fr generatins t cme. The YMCA f Glendale cunseling staff cnsists f adult and yung adult vlunteers wh are enthusiastic and yuth-fcused individuals seeking t be psitive rle mdels in the lives f ur participants. All vlunteers and camp staff g thrugh rigrus screenings and backgrund checks t ensure the best qualified individuals lead ur prgraming. T ensure that ur staff are fully prepared fr any situatin that may arise, we prvide them with the best training including: health and safety, specific age-grup behavir crrective practices, risk management, yuth supervisin, child abuse preventin, and many mre camp related tpics. RESIDENT CAMP DEPARTMENT POLICIES AND INFORMATION Camp Tuitin, Cancellatins, and Payments Tuitin and Depsits The 2019 Camp Fx Tuitin is as fllws: YMCA Member Rate: $ Nn-Member Rate: $ The 2019 Camp Circle V Muntain Camp Adventure Tuitin is as fllws: YMCA Member Rate: $ Nn-Member Rate: $ There is a $75.00 nn-refundable depsit that is included in the Camp Tuitin nt in additin t. A depsit guarantees placement int a camp but it shall be frfeited in the event f a cancelatin. Additinally, in the event f a past due accunt a $50 reinstatement fee will be applied t yur accunt, fr mre infrmatin please see the sectin titled Due Dates and Past Due Accunts belw. Cancelatins and Refunds Yu are able t cancel yur camp registratin at any time put please be aware that a cancelatin des nt guarantee a full r partial refund. Additinally, we request that any cancelatin request be submitted in writing t the any member f the Resident Camp Department. Furthermre, any and all refunds are all subject t apprval frm the Resident Camp Directr and must meet the fllwing guidelines: If canceling 8 weeks prir t camp a refund request may be eligible fr 75% f the amunt paid after subtracting the $75 nn-refundable depsit. If canceling 4 weeks prir t camp a refund request may be eligible fr 50% f the amunt paid after subtracting the $75 nn-refundable depsit. If canceling after the 4 weeks prir t camp refunds a refund request may be eligible n a case-by-case basis and apprval frm the Resident Camp Directr. All refunds, including thse that are n the basis f medical needs, require the apprval f the Resident Camp 4

5 Directr and can take anywhere between 7-14 business days t cmplete. Any refunds that are n the basis f medical needs may require a written dctr nte with the prgnsis submitted t the Resident Camp Directr befre apprval. All refund requests are nt apprved, and each are taken n a case by case basis. Due Dates and Past Due Accunts All frms and fees are due a minimum f fur weeks prir t camp date t hld yur camp reservatin. Failure t pay camp fees in full and cmplete yur camp frms by yur camps due date will result in cancelatin f yur camper s registratin. Yur camps due date can be fund belw. Payment and Frms Deadline Date (by Camp) C-Ed Yuth One: Tuesday, May 14, 2019 Teen Camp One: Tuesday, June 18, 2019 C-Ed Yuth Tw: Tuesday, June 25, 2019 Teen Camp Tw: Tuesday, July 2, 2019 C-Ed Yuth Three: Tuesday, July 9, 2019 Circle V Muntain Camp: Tuesday, May 28, 2019 Any Fees r Frms nt received by the abve deadline will result in cancelatin and the campers family will have a five-day grace perid t be reinstated t the prgram with a $50 reinstatement fee psted t the campers accunt. After the five days yu will be subject t a full cancelatin and are nt entitled t a refund. Yur Campers Health Infrmatin n Insurance and Physical Examinatins The YMCA f Glendale des nt ffer accident r health insurance t prgram participants and assumes n financial bligatin in the event f any injury. We require that yu uplad a cpy f yur health insurance card t yur camp frms under the Insurance Sectin. If yu d nt have health insurance, please answer n under the Insurance Sectin and cntact us. If yu answer n yu are subject all financial bligatin in the event yur child must be taken t a hspital. Physical Examinatins are nt required t attend camp but are strngly recmmended within 24 mnths f attending camp due t the rigrus physical activities participants may engage in at camp. Immunizatin Infrmatin We require that all f ur campers are current with their immunizatins and require that the dates f thse immunizatins are imputed int the Immunizatins Sectin f ur camp frms. Fr a faster and easier ptin, yu may uplad a cpy f yur immunizatins under the Immunizatin Sectin. The YMCA f Glendale and the Resident Camp Department fllw strict guidelines and regulatins frm the State f Califrnia. Effective January 1, 2016 the State f Califrnia amended Califrnia Health and Safety Cde, Sectins in regard t Immunizatins. Thse changes and ur plicy are as fllws: Changes in the State f Califrnia Health Cde made all immunizatin waivers fr persnal beliefs nt valid and require all children t be immunized fr enrllment. The YMCA f Glendale and the Resident Camp Department fllw the regulatins f the State f Califrnia and the Glendale Unified Schl District and require immunizatin fr attendance t camp and d nt accept any type f wavier fr persnal beliefs. The nly exemptin t this plicy is if yur child has an exemptin fr medical reasns. This exemptin must be brught t the attentin f the Resident Camp Directr with a Dctrs Letter stating the exemptin. Fr further infrmatin please cntact Ray Calame, Camp Develpment Directr, at r visit Infrmatin n Medicatins at Camp Taking Medicatin at Camp is just like it wuld be at hme hwever there are a few plicies we must fllw. Belw are ur listed plicies fr Medicatins at Camp: In accrdance with Federal Drug Regulatin and guidelines frm the FDA we require all prescriptin medicatin that is sent t camp t be in the riginal pharmacy cntainers with dsage type by yur 5

6 pharmacist r a written and signed letter frm yur primary care physician. Any parental mdificatin will nt be accepted. Over the cunter medicatins als must be in the riginal packaging and labeled by the parent with camper s name and dsage. DO NOT PACK MEDICATION IN LUGGAGE. All medicatins, prescriptin r ver the cunter, must be placed in a clear zip lck bag with Campers Name and given t the Camp Medical Directr upn arrival at the Bat. Prir t Camp parents shuld discuss with their camper their medicatin schedule while at camp and prir t barding the bat fr Camp Fx r bus fr Camp Circle V we require parents with medicatin t fill ut the Medicatins sectin f the camp frms with exact infrmatin stated n the prescriptin bttle frm the pharmacist. Any unused medicatins will be returned by the Camp Medical Directr upn bat arrival back frm camp and it is parent/guardians respnsibility t pick up medicatins at the harbr fr Camp Fx and at Freemnt Park fr Camp Circle V. Any medicatins left with the Camp Medical Directr after everyne has departed frm arrival will be given t the Camp Develpment Directr and taken back t the YMCA f Glendale. Medicatins will be held up t 30 days fr pick r t be mailed ut. It is the parent s respnsibility t pick up medicatins frm the YMCA r pay fr pstage fr them t be mailed. After the 30 days, any medicatin left will be prperly dispsed f thrugh ur lcal fire department r hspital. Medical Treatment Standards and Guidelines The Camp Medical Staff is cmmitted t prviding yur child with a safe and healthy camping experience. We fllw treatment standards that have been apprved by trained, qualified physicians. We will cntact the parent/legal guardian immediately shuld the services f the physicians in Avaln be required. A camper s parent/guardian will be cntacted using the fllwing guidelines: Minr First Aid, i.e. minr scrapes, r scratches Injuries falling in this categry d nt require emergency medical care; as such we will infrm parents f these types f injuries upn ur return. Minr Illness / Injury, i.e. sre thrat, headaches, nausea This categry is at the discretin f the camp medical staff as t when parent / legal guardian is cntacted. Prlnged symptms will initiate a phne call. Services Invlving a Hspital r Physician, i.e. cuts requiring sutures, prlnged vmiting, etc. Parent/Guardian and Emergency Cntact is cntacted by camp staff and hspital. Campers with Special Diets and Medical Needs It is ur gal t make every participant feel included and welcme at camp, with that in mind, we understand that sme dietary r medical requests may be made. We will try t accmmdate all requests and will cntact parents if unable t. Special meals such as: vegetarian, vegan, lactse-free, amng thers are able t be accmmdated at camp. Please nte all special dietary needs n the camp frms under Health Histry Part Tw by answering yes t the questin, Any ther physical, mental, r emtinal health cnditin that the camp shuld be aware f? Special medical accmmdatins r ther specific requests need t be addressed with Ray Calame, Camp Develpment Directr, by phne r in persn (appintment required). Prhibited Items Plicy Camp has a zer-tlerance plicy regarding bringing any drugs, alchlic beverages, weapns, smking, r publicatins with adult cntent at camp. We als have a zer-tlerance plicy regarding anyne wh cmprmises the safety f ur campers r staff by failing t bserve all camp safety rules, refusing t treat thers and their prperty with respect, and refusing t listen t ur vlunteers and prgram staff. Camp reserves the right t search any and all belngings during anyne's stay at camp. 6

7 Knives, Needles, r any Sharp Objects are prhibited at camp fr the safety f the camp. Camp attendance is a privilege. Any camper r vlunteer staff member may be sent hme at any time at the discretin f the camp manager/directr fr failing t adhere t camp schedules, plicies and/r cde f behavir. It will be the respnsibility f the parent/guardian f camper and/r vlunteer staff member t prvide r purchase transprtatin frm Avaln, Califrnia (Camp Fx) r frm Camp Circle V (Muntain Camp) t his/her final destinatin if camper r vlunteer staff member is asked t leave camp. If camper r vlunteer is under age 18 the parent/guardian will als have t pay fr the chaperne. What Nt t Bring t Camp At camp we encurage all f ur participants t allw themselves t experience camp t its fullest ptential. T d s, we ask that parents encurage campers t leave any items at hme that can be easily, misplaced, lst, brken, r taken. Belw is a list f examples f such items: a. Persnal Sprts Equipment b. Items such as digital cameras may be brught t camp, but it is the respnsibility f the campers t keep items safe. The YMCA f Glendale, Camp Fx, and Camp Circle V is nt respnsible fr any brken r stlen items that are brught t camp. What t Bring t Camp Suggested Packing List We want t make packing fr camp an enjyable experience fr bth parents and campers t engage in tgether. Additinally, please place yur campers initials n all items yur camper brings t camp. Pack all items in a rller r duffle bag with camper s name written n the side. The Sugar Shack: Camp Stre If yu will like t prvide sme pending mney fr campers t buy snacks at the Sugar Shack while at camp, a maximum f $30.00 shuld be mre than enugh. Yur child will have the ability t buy daily snacks. Spending mney must be cash placed in a sealed envelpe clearly labeled with yur child's name. Pack that envelpe in yur child s luggage where he/she can find it t give the cabin cunselr upn arrival at camp. Once the mney is handed ver t the cunselr it will be recrded and may be used as a srt f camp checking accunt at the Sugar Shack s campers can purchase items at the stre withut the need t carry arund the mney yu prvide fr them. Any unspent dllars at the end f camp is returned t the camper n departure day at camp and is always available t be dnated t Wrld Service. Wrld Service Campers will have the pprtunity t make a cntributin t the YMCA Wrld Service Prgram. Mney dnated thrugh this prgram helps children in the United States enjy sme f the same pprtunities we have enjyed at Fx. It makes a great impact upn the campers when they realize that each persn giving s little can accmplish s much. Many campers give frm $1.00 t $ Once cmbined, these gifts are able t pay fr a week f camp fr smene less frtunate. A dnatin t this fund is ptinal and is left t yur discretin. Shuld yu and yur child chse t cntribute t the Wrld Service fund; the amunt shuld be included in yur child s spending mney. Cmmunicatin While at Camp Phne Service and Phne Cmmunicatin frm Yur Camper T allw ur campers t get the full experience f camp, we request that yur camper leaves his/her cell phne at hme. Aside frm having bad receptin, we want t minimize the effect f hmesickness that a call frm parents can have fr a child away at camp. Aside frm the pssibility f creating hme sickness frm a camper calling hme, as staff we wuld like t avid a situatin where everyne wuld want t call hme if thers are t find ut that a camper called hme. With many years f expertise, we reassure yu that every camper will return n Saturday safe and sund. Cmmunicatin with Camp Staff With limited wireless service, cmmunicatin with Camp Directrs is minimally accessible thrugh with the Camp Department Assistants, Justin Kennally, at jkennally@glenymca.rg r Rebecca Syntt, at rsyntt@glenymca.rg and shuld nly be used in the event f an emergency. Camp Mail The nly apprved cmmunicatin with yur child at camp f curse is always the gd le fashin United States Pstal Service. Letters, pstcards r parcels shuld be mailed by the Thursday befre departure fr camp and n later than the Wednesday yur camper is in camp t assure delivery. Please be aware that FedEx and UPS d nt ship t camp and nly the USPS can mail t camp. T ensure that any mail gets t the right camper please make sure t include: camp sessin and senders n the return address in case that mail needs t be returned. Please address all camper mail fr Camp Fx with: Camp Fx, Camp Dates, Camper's Name, P.O. BOX 1920, AVALON, CA Mail is checked every day and given t campers as fast as pssible, just knw it takes lnger fr mail t get t camp then it des n the mainland s make sure yu prvide ample time fr sending mail. 8

9 Getting t Camp Departure fr Camp Fx Camps n Catalina Island All f ur Camp Fx Camps depart frm the Queen Mary Parking Lt at the Catalina Express Building in Lng Beach n the Sunday f Camp. All parent/guardians must be present during check-in. Check-in fr Camp is between 7:30 AM and 8:15 AM. Arrival fr Camp Fx Camps n Catalina Island We will return frm Camp Fx n the fllwing Saturday t the prt. Arrival fr C-Ed Yuth One (June 9-15, 2019) will be at 2:00 PM in Lng Beach. All ther C-Ed Camps and ur Teen Camps will arrive back at ur traditinal 6:00 PM in Lng Beach. Parents picking up their kids must bring their harbr cards they received at check in t pick up their campers. Yur child may be picked up by a friend r family member but make sure they are given the harbr card t pick up yur camper. We need this t make sure they are ging with the right peple. Picture I.D. is required. Parking and Directins t the Queen Mary in Lng Beach fr Camp Fx Camps Parking at the Queen Mary des cst mney and yu shuld be aware f all the csts f parking. Belw is the cst breakdwn fr parking: 0-29 minutes is free minutes is $8 60 minutes & up is $18 The YMCA f Glendale, Resident Camp Department, and Camp Fx des nt cntrl this area and we are unable t negtiate a special price. Parents picking up their kids must bring their camper return cards they received at check in t pick up their campers. Yur child may be picked up by a friend r family member but make sure they are given the camper return card t pick up yur camper. We need this t make sure they are ging with the right peple. Picture I.D. is required. The address fr Freemnt Park is 600 Hahn Avenue, Glendale, CA Late Pick Up Upn return t Lng Beach fr Camp Fx Camps r t Freemnt Park fr Circle V Camps, if yur child is nt picked up by the time the final staff persn leaves fr Glendale, he/she will remain in ur care and will be transprted t the YMCA f Glendale, 140 N. Luise St., Glendale, CA and will remain under ur supervisin until yur arrival. This shuld nt be used as an alternative t picking up yur child and will incur a fee. 9

10 Financial Assistance The YMCA f Glendale prvides financial assistance t the extent pssible t thse in need. Assistance will be granted n a first cme, first serve basis. Assistance will be granted fr the length f the prgram every year. Fr mre infrmatin n requirements please cntact Ray Calame, Resident Camp Develpment Directr. LTC/CIT Prgram The Leadership Training Camp Prgram (LTC) r Cunselr in Training Prgram (CIT) is a great prgram that ffers teens the pprtunity t learn and practice skills t ne day becme Camp Cunselrs and Leaders in their cmmunity. Team building, leadership techniques, and methds are sme f the tpics taught t the participants f this prgram, while enjying all the fun f Summer Camp activities. The LTC prgram is still cnsidered a camper and therefre must pay the full camp tuitin t attend camp. LTC s are campers being intrduced t a prgram where they will learn t be the leaders f tmrrw. Service hurs can be given upn request. Cabin Requests Cabin Request is ne f ur mst ppular questins. Every camper wants t make sure they are paired up with all f their friends. Althugh we d ur best t try and accmmdate as many requests as pssible, we d ask yu t please limit yur list t yur tp 4 cabin mates yu wuld like t request. All requests must be within 21 mnths f each ther. It is at the discretin f the Camp Develpment Directr and leadership staff t make any changes in the cabins after a cabin has already been assigned. These changes will nly be made in circumstances where the change will benefit the experience f all the campers in the cabins.
