Call t Order Gerge Bridges, Park District Cmmissiner, called the meeting t rder at 12:10pm II. Rll Call & Intrductins In attendance were Pat Fley, Park District Cmmissiner/CAD Liaisn; Bard President, Gerge Bridges, Jr.; Claudia Freeman, Superintendent f Cultural Arts; Ty Rhrer, Cultural Arts Supervisr; Debra Carl, Cultural Arts Specialist; Bryan Escbar, Cultural Arts & Histry Specialist; Elizabeth Falln, Department Supprt Aide; David Mtley, City f Waukegan PR; Lisa May, 7 th Ward Alderman; Harry Came, President f the Waukegan Histrical Sciety; Bucky Halker, Illinis Humanities and Illinis Arts Cuncil/Musician; Maria Caldern, Academia Cultural Xiltl; Rxanne Swansn, WSO, Cncert Call & JBC Music Instructr; MaryFran Trha. Updates n the State budget and any impact n the Cultural Arts Divisin N awards have been mailed as f yet frm IL Arts Cuncil/IAC award is $8200 Currently Waukegan is dwn t ne theater cmpany, Three Brthers B. Departmental Strategic Plan and Prgramming Update Strategic Plan (handut passed arund) is the guiding plan fr the park district The Cultural Arts Department creates gals that fit int the verall gals and initiatives f the park district. C. Lcal Arts Initiatives Current art shw at JBC shwcases lcal artist, Philip Schrn, wh has sld ten pieces during the shw. 2 Lake Cunty Dance Exp ver the summer had a dance shwcase with ATLATS perfrming Three Brther s Theater seasn has several prductins CLC has a full schedule f cncerts and theater prductins Puert Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA) jined with the park district again fr Christmas in July Festival and is prmting its Natinal Cuatr Festival D. Discussin f fcus grup questins Refer t the minutes frm ur previus meeting t see what was discussed last time and we will cntinue n with the discussin frm the previus meeting regarding Cultural Arts prgramming and what d yu like least r mst abut what is happening in the Cultural Arts Department. What d yu like least: It seems that the Cultural Arts Department gets stuck in the bureaucracy f the Waukegan Park District and makes it hard t respnd quickly t changing needs David Mtley It appears that the Waukegan Park District des nt supprt Cultural Arts in the same way it supprts recreatin, sprts and parks David Mtley Mney always seems t be an issue Maryfran Trha Cultural Arts seems t be financially supprted mre by grant initiatives rather than the park district funding David Mtley Cmmunicatin abut events seems t be mainly electrnic rather than print media which sme find mre visually appealing Patricia Fley Print media (psters) display the primary infrmatin f time and place in a small frmat and is hard t read Patricia Fley Cncert Call and riginal CA bard was mre invlved Patricia Fley The fcus n numbers may create a cultural arts desert because there are reccurring and generatinal phases f the arts being mre r less prevalent in a cmmunity based n demgraphics and cultural shifts Can t measure success by revenue and numbers alne Lisa Kajfez May Freeman addressed the cmment abut supprt and reminded the members that the park district, its bard and administratin are supprting the arts as they have in the past.

Grwing students/grwing audiences where d we g frm here? This will be the discussin questin fr the next meeting F. Questins/Cmments/Cncerns Welcme t Bucky Halker wh is new t the CAAC. Mr Halker explained his invlvement in the arts and traditinal flk and ethnic arts as well as his cnnectins t the Illinis Arts Cuncil and his expertise in arts funding and grant writing. Maria Caldern shared with the grup her experience with bringing and grwing her prgram in Waukegan and thrugh cnnectins she develped frm the prgram in Waukegan she will nw be traveling t India t share experiences with children in a schl prgram called Under the Bridge Schl which services children in pverty. What are the things that the Cultural Arts Department are nt successful at: bringing in numbers t supprt the prgrams/events Dave Jhnsn having prgrams that might appeal t a mass audience Martha Padilla Rams ffering a variety f experiences Martha Padilla Rams if attendees want a variety f experiences there als needs t be the level f supprt t sustain a prgram In current times mney is nt being dnated t the arts and there is a generatin that has been raised withut arts in the schls Claudia Freeman Freeman assured CAAC members that the park district, bard and administratin are very supprtive f the arts.
