Cnsider the Hazards yu expect t encunter during yur field research wrk, and make a plan fr hw yu will handle them shuld they arise. Fr example, make a plan fr what will yu d in case f a thunderstrm r a brken ankle at a site distant frm a vehicle. D yu have a planned meeting place in the event yur grup is split up? Bring Apprpriate Equipment fr the time f year and distance yu plan n travelling. Fr example, cnsider a rain jacket and rain pants with extra layers and water fr summer wrk. Check the Weather reprt and plan apprpriately, but dn t cunt n it t be 100% accurate. Fr example, thunderstrms may mve in earlier than expected. Change yur plans accrdingly. POTENTIAL HAZARDS: Suspicius Persn r Activity: MRS is 120 acres, ~50 buildings, and has a public radway that leads t Niwt Ridge, hwever, the husing area abve the Marr Lab is generally ff limits t the public. Knw yur neighbrs and be aware f yur surrundings. Fire: Structural Wd burning stves, cigarettes, and cking stves are all ptential surces f ignitin in the dining hall, husing, and ffices. Smking is prhibited campus wide at the MRS facility per CU plicy. Fire extinguishers are fund in every building and may be used fr small, cntrllable fires. Wildland Fire danger can be very high during the dry summer mnths. Open fires (fire pits, fire pans, charcal grills) are prhibited at MRS. Reprt any smke at r nearby the statin t staff r 911. Lightning: Thunderstrms in Clrad can build between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. If thunderstrms are in the frecast, never be abve timberline after 1:00 p.m. If abve tree line when a strm rlls in, rapidly descend t shelter. It is always better t seek shelter in a thick frest versus an islated stand f trees. If abve tree line and far frm shelter in a thunderstrm: Find the lwest pssible area. Cruch with yur head lw and keep yur feet tgether. Never sit r lie dwn n the grund. If lightning is imminent and yu are in a grup, spread ut at least 10 steps apart. High Altitude: The MRS is at 9,500 feet, and research sites range up t 12,000 feet in elevatin. Symptms f altitude sickness include dizziness, nausea, difficulty sleeping, headache, shrtness f breath, and a general feeling f being ill. Drink plenty f water and avid caffeine, alchl, r tbacc, Pace yurself when hiking and wrking and eat plenty f calries s yur bdy has energy. If symptms persist, the best remedy is t descend t a lwer altitude. Temperature/Weather: Weather changes quickly in Clrad. It can and des snw every mnth f the year in the muntains. Hypthermia: Hypthermia is the lwering f cre temperature, and can happen at temperatures as high as 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Hypthermia can happen in the summer r the winter. Bring plenty f layers including a rain jacket, extra fleece jacket, rain pants, and hat. Try t avid cttn, instead layer with wl r synthetics.

4 Frstbite Frstbite ccurs during prlnged expsure t cld temperatures, especially during high winds, r brief expsure in very cld temperatures f lw wind-chill factrs, when temperatures are cld enugh t freeze bdy tissue. Signs f frstbite are numbness, skin that is waxy and white. Preventin includes cvering all expsed skin. Wildlife: Treat all wildlife with respect and view at a distance. Never feed wildlife including chipmunks and squirrels. Mse Very cmmn arund MRS. Typically nt aggressive, mse can be extremely dangerus when startled; especially a female mse with yung. They are extremely fast and have pr visin, their defense is by trampling they cmmnly weigh 800 punds plus! Bears Muntain Lins Give it space. In the case that yu are threatened by a mse stay calm, d nt run away, slwly back away in the directin yu came. If it charges yu take shelter behind a large tree r rck. Very cmmn arund MRS. Make nise, especially if yu are hiking alne t avid surprising a bear. Never run. Make nise with cnfident yell g away bear and clapping yur hands ludly. Keep yur distance and back slwly away facing the bear, aviding direct eye cntact. Thrw rcks at the bear if it is aggressively appraching yu. A fed bear is a dead bear! Trash and fd left utdrs r in yur car will attract bears t the MRS campus. Dispse f trash prperly, and d nt leave clers with fd r trash utside. Cmmn arund MRS. Yu are mst likely t cme in cntact with a muntain lin in the early mrnings, late evenings r if yu are ut at night. Travel in grups and make plenty f nise t reduce the chances f surprising a muntain lin. Stay calm, and back away slwly while facing the muntain lin and making yurself appear as large as pssible. If the lin is aggressive thrw sticks r rcks, fight back! Insects: Bees and Wasps Bee and wasp stings are generally nt a prblem unless yu have an allergic reactin t their sting. Carrying an antihistamine such as Benadryl in yur first aid kit can help decrease the symptms f anaphylaxis if the victim can safely swallw. Ticks Ticks are ften fund at the wdland edges f grassy fields. Tick checks are the best way t prevent being bitten. Tuck yur pants int scks, and use an insect repellent. Heat/Sun: Sun screen / Sunglasses / Wide Hat / Stay hydrated. Take extra water! Winter Research: Winter abve tree line n Niwt Ridge is very different than summer, and extra precautins shuld be taken t prepare fr the high winds, lw temperatures and ften zer visibility cnditins that exist abve tree line. The MRS recmmends that yu never travel alne. It is very easy t becme disriented r lst in white ut cnditins abve tree line. It is recmmended at a minimum that yu carry: an emergency bivy, and/r dwn jacket and dwn pants, a cell phne and Persnal Lcatr Beacn, cmpass, basic first aid supplies, headlamp, extra fd and extra water, a cmpass r GPS and a map f the area.
