Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 Survey Design and Prcedures Methds Sample size and sampling plan All VSP questinnaires fllw design principles utlined in Dn A. Dillman s bk Mail and Internet Surveys: The Tailred Design Methd 2007). Using this methd, the sample size was calculated based n park visitatin statistics f previus years. Brief interviews were cnducted with a systematic, randm sample f visitr grups that arrived at five sites during August 2-8, Visitrs were surveyed between the hurs f 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Table 1 shws the eight lcatins, number f questinnaires distributed at each lcatin, and the respnse rate fr each lcatin. During this survey, 1,124 visitr grups were cntacted and 1,019 f these grups 90.7%) accepted questinnaires. The average acceptance rate fr 277 VSP visitr studies cnducted frm 1988 thrugh 2012 is 91.3%.) The distributed questinnaires included 14 in Spanish, f which three were returned. Visitrs culd cmplete either the paper versin f the questinnaire r the nline versin. The nline ptin did nt change the sample size r sampling plan, but prvided the visitr with anther ptin fr cmpleting the survey. Paper versins f the questinnaire were cmpleted and returned by 470 visitr grups resulting in a 46.1% respnse rate; nline questinnaires were cmpleted by 71 visitr grups, a 6.9% respnse rate. The verall respnse rate fr this study was 53.1%. The average respnse rate fr the 277 VSP visitr studies is 71.6%.) Table 1. 14 Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 Questinnaire design The Sequia and Kings Canyn NPs questinnaire was develped thrugh wrkshps and cnference calls held with park staff t design and priritize questins. Sme questins were cmparable with VSP studies cnducted at ther parks while thers were custmized fr Sequia and Kings Canyn NPs. Many questins ask respndents t chse answers frm a list f respnses, ften with an pen-ended ptin, while thers are cmpletely pen-ended. The questinnaire was presented in tw frmats traditinal paper bklet and nline, which was cmpatible with mst cmmn web brwsers fr bth PC and Macintsh cmputers. The nline survey passwrd was a ne-time use, cmputer-generated passwrd unique t each participant. Unique passwrds were used t prevent unauthrized access t a participant s survey. Participants culd lg in and ut f their survey by selecting the save and return later ptin. When the participant finished the survey and selected the cmpleted and exit ptin, the survey was lcked and future access was nt pssible. N pilt study was cnducted t test the Sequia and Kings Canyn NPs questinnaire. Hwever, all questins fllwed Office Management and Budget OMB) guidelines and/r were used in previus surveys; thus, the clarity and cnsistency f the survey instrument have been tested and supprted. Survey prcedure Visitr grups were greeted, briefly intrduced t the purpse f the study, and asked t participate. If visitrs agreed, they were asked which member at least 16 years ld) had the next birthday. The individual with the next birthday was selected t cmplete the questinnaire fr the grup. An interview, lasting apprximately tw minutes, was cnducted with that persn t determine grup size, grup type, the age f the member cmpleting the questinnaire, and hw this visit t the parks fit int their grup s travel plans. These individuals were asked their names, addresses, and telephne numbers r addresses in rder t mail them a reminder/thank-yu pstcard and fllw-ups. They were given a questinnaire cntaining a pstcard with a unique user ID and passwrd, the Internet address, and directins fr cmpleting the survey nline. Visitrs were asked t cmplete the survey after their visit, and return it using the Business Reply Mail envelpe prvided r cmplete the survey nline. Tw weeks fllwing the survey, a reminder/thank-yu pstcard was mailed t all participants wh prvided a valid mailing address see Table 2). Replacement questinnaires were mailed t participants wh had nt returned their questinnaires fur weeks after the survey. Seven weeks after the survey, a secnd rund f replacement questinnaires was mailed t participants wh had nt returned their questinnaires. Eight weeks after the survey, a third rund f replacement questinnaires was mailed t participants wh had nt returned their questinnaires. Fllw-up letters cntained anther unique passwrd that differentiated between mailing waves and eliminated duplicate submissins. Table 2. 15 Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 Data analysis Fr the paper versin, visitr respnses were entered twice and duble-key validatin was perfrmed n numeric and shrt text respnses. The remaining checkbx bubble) variables were read by ptical mark recgnitin OMR) sftware. Fr nline surveys, the visitr respnses were sent directly t the database. Respnses t pen-ended questins fr paper and nline versins were categrized and summarized prir t data analysis. Numeric data were prcessed and descriptive statistics were calculated using Statistical Analysis Sftware SAS). Limitatins As with all surveys, this study has limitatins that shuld be cnsidered when interpreting the results. 1. This was a self-administered survey. Respndents cmpleted the questinnaire after their visit, which may have resulted in pr recall. Thus, it is nt pssible t knw whether visitr respnses reflected actual behavir. 2. Visitrs were given mre than ne ptin t cmplete the survey, which may have affected the respnse rate. 3. The data reflect visitr use patterns at the selected sites during the study perid f August 2-8, The results present a snapsht in time and d nt necessarily apply t visitrs during ther times f the year. 4. Cautin is advised when interpreting any data with a sample size f less than 30, as the results may be unreliable. When the sample size is less than 30, the wrd CAUTION! is included in the graph, figure, table, r text. 5. Occasinally, there may be incnsistencies in the results. Incnsistencies arise frm missing data r incrrect answers due t misunderstd directins, carelessness, r pr recall f infrmatin). Therefre, refer t bth the percentage and N number f individuals r visitr grups) when interpreting the results. Special cnditins The weather during the survey perid ranged frm cludy, cl, and rainy t extremely ht, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit. During the survey perid, there was extensive rad cnstructin in the parks, which may have had an impact n bth the distributin and acceptance rates, as well as the visitr experience. 5

Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 Checking nn-respnse bias Five variables were used t check nn-respnse bias: participant age, grup size, grup type, park as destinatin, and participant travel distance t the park. Respndents and nn-respndents were significantly different in terms f average respndent age and grup type. Significant differences were nt fund in ther variables see Tables 3-6). The results indicated that visitrs at yunger age ranges less than 40 years ld) and visitrs wh traveled with family were nt as respnsive t the survey. Sme biases due t nn-respnse may need t be taken int cnsideratin. See Appendix 3 fr mre details n the nn-respnse bias checking prcedures. Table 3. Questin 26 Is there anything else yur persnal grup wuld like t tell us abut yur visit t Sequia and Kings Canyn NPs? Open-ended) 1. Nise and curfew r quiet time nt enfrced in campgrunds. 2. N backcuntry use hits bear bxes areas hard. Time t remve maybe? T cncentrated. 3. Educate peple n fires abve timberline! I see evidence f fires at 13000'. Lve the wilderness! But staging mre than 1 trip frm afar is hard re fd strage. The P.O.'s were helpful. 1. I wish there were mre recycling bins in the lwer part f Sequia I didn't see any at all at Fthills Visitr's Center, Mr Rck, Crescent Meadw, r Sherman Grve, and wuld've liked t use ne. 2. I answered assuming this survey isn't meant t cver the Natinal Mnument/Frest. My activities in thse were tw camping nights, ne each at Leavis Flat very nice) and Big Meadw, and a cave tur at Byden. Allw access t river fr dgs, their crrespnding care Allw pet dgs t get int the streams and swimming areas. They get extremely ht during the summer in the fthills. Maybe have designated areas where pets are allwed in the water. Allw respnsible peple t hike with dg n leash As mentined befre, the degree and amunt f cnstructin was disappinting and caused us t leave the park earlier then previusly planned At the Crystal Springs medium size campgrund, ne bathrm is nt enugh t cver the size f the crwds At the panramic pint the distance sign is misleading - fr ther adults it's nice if yu tell hw far the walk is Awesme Awesme trip, much less crwded than expected Awesme! We lve the natinal parks! We prceeded t Ysemite fr 2.5 days. Backcuntry, trails are flat; trut fish are huge; river water is warm. Mmma bears are cuddly. Seriusly - rangers are helpful; cleaning crews diligent; mst all peple are glad t be there camping. Bathrms in Ldgeple shuld be upgraded fr safety and cnvenience t have at least ne light and a surface next t the sinks fr putting nes persnal items. Bathrms smell really bad Beautiful - thank yu Beautiful park. We all enjyed ur stay at Jhn Muir Ldge and Kings Canyn Natinal Park. We want t visit again sn. Beautiful, thank yu! Beautiful, wildlife viewing fr mule deer Beautiful! It wuld have been nice if the persn at the entrance wuld have tld yu t buy tickets fr the Crystal Cave in advance. Beautiful. Enjyed my visit. Better rad signs Beware that there are peple wh d nt respect the limited areas and g next t trees walking int restricted areas. Maybe a pliceman/ranger culd help the preservatin. Breathtaking - thank yu 78

Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 Came acrss litter and my best friend and I picked-up after smene's trash. Maybe rangers r ther emplyees can ram areas t pick what is left behind? Just an idea. Thank yu! Change the way yu can get a campsite at Buckeye Flat. We had paid fr tw nights and smene remved ur ticket and tried t take ur campsite while we were ut all day. We were cnstantly being asked by peple walking/driving by, asking us when we were leaving. When we did leave a day early due t this harassment) smene saw we were leaving and just sat and waited fr us t leave, making us very uncmfrtable. Culd use anther small picnic area within 10 miles f General Grant tree - tur buses fill the Clumbine area Curtney, ne f the bear patrl rangers, was amazing! Rangers shuld take the time t interact with park guests and she did. It made ur visit special. Crystal Springs campgrund was wnderful, hwever ne night was disturbed by tw rwdy grups, lud until 4 AM. We never saw a ranger in the campgrund, nr was there a camp hst t cmplain t. Yu wuld hpe that campers wuld be aware and sensitive t all thers but unfrtunately this was nt the case. Signage at the very least shuld be psted n campsite bards reminding peple t be respectful. Ever better if rangers did night patrls. I'm sad abut the lw funding fr NPS. I am lking frward t turing the natinal parks fr mnths at a time, when I retire. Dgs shuld be allwed n trails Enfrce the n dg plicy n trail Enjy having the parks s clse. We lve t camp! Thank yu! Enjyed ur visit Finish the rad please Fire yur s-called engineers, bring back the WWII generatin Fr the number f persns visiting frm freign cuntries, we were really embarrassed that the restrms were as dirty and smelly and messy as they were. When I have traveled t Eurpean cuntries their restrms in park settings were meticulus! Gas statin: lines t lng, filthy, dirty. We lved it all! Grgeus park Gt excellent advice n hiking trails frm ranger at Ldgeple Great and affrdable vacatin area, wnderful peple Great park and althugh rad cnstructin was nging, we enjyed ur visit. Hwever, we were disappinted t find ut we culdn t visit the Crystal Cave n the last day f ur visit. Als, after learning that we thught we'd save the day by visiting El Mrr Rck nly t find the rad t it clsed when we reached it. Other than that we had a gd time and hpe t visit again perhaps in a different seasn when it's nt s ht. Keep up the gd wrk. Great park, backcuntry permit ffice very helpful, in this case weather did nt cperate high heat) Great trip! Thanks. Grew up visiting NP as us all park emplyees. Very friendly and helpful. Was nice t see where entry fee were used tward new rad, clean picnic area, bathrm. Prud t pay fr smething that yu can see a change thrughut my years. Please feel free t cntact if mre inf is needed. Grcery prices are very expensive at General Grant Stre Had a great time Hpe t return fr a lnger visit. Plan t find less develped camping sites, hike, visit Kings Canyn I am grateful that I was able t drp ff my temprarily handicapped w/ leg injury) husemate smewhat near the General Sherman Tree and then take the shuttle dwn and back frm the distant parking lt abve I can't say enugh abut hw great yur rangers are at Ptwisha. 90 Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 I didn't knw when we went n the Cngress trail that there wuld be a cntrlled fire. I had an allergic reactin t what was burning and started t have an anaphylactic reactin and had t leave the park. Signs need t be psted at the beginning f trails indicating if a cntrlled fire has been initiated in the area. I enjyed visiting Sequia but rad cnstructin tk t lng fr visitr and als shuld finish last year I liked all the explanatins abut the trees, fires, etc. They were exactly the right length. I liked the shuttle service t. I really enjyed my visit. What a beautiful place. The restrm place. The restrm at Ldgeple was in bad shape needed t be cleaned and sme air freshener. I missed the sign fr big baldy - shrub in frnt f it, had t turn arund. I hpe I can return! I lve Sequia and Kings Canyn NP everyne in the U.S. shuld see it. If nt in persn shw them n TV! I lve the backcuntry in SEKI I lve these parks! This trip happened t be ne where we didn't make use f the facilities because we were n a church retreat, but that's nt typical f my visits. Favrite campgrund = Cedar Grve. I lved seeing Sequia trees in persn. I wish there were mre day hike and activities in Kings Canyn. I lved the ranger led talks at the different sites. This was a very well maintained park. We wish we culd have stayed inside the park I mainly travel thrugh the park t g t natural frest fr activities I prefer that Cedar Grve area remain "first-cme, first-serve" with respect t campgrunds I was disturbed t hear a park emplyee mentin that a bear entered the campgrund, was caught and then euthanized. I wuld prefer bears were relcated. I went t Ysemite afterwards - Sequia is much mre user friendly, much less peple, park rangers mre infrmative and helpful - cmpletely different experience. I will return t Sequia r Kings Canyn prbably nt Ysemite. The signs were mre helpful and in cnspicuus places fantastic! Thank yu fr letting me fill survey ut! I wuld need mre signs, it's easy t get lst n the lng rads. Culd walk miles s estimate the distances. I wuld prefer t have a campgrund hst available at all times. I had t ask a camper t turn dwn their music, anther camper had a barking dg. Neither cmplied with my request t cntrl their nise. Bth were aggressive and rude. In the campgrund the way t the restrms is very lng and fr handicapped peple t stny I've really enjyed it and will cme back again! Believe in climate change but d nt believe it is nly man's fault. If pssible, please have water and all lcatins, e.g. Mn Rck and Crescent Meadw. Thank yu! In my pinin, SEKI is the mst beautiful place in the wrld! I really like it there - really dn't need t imprve anything - except the hrse pp n the trails! It is a wnderful park It is nice t have same campgrunds that take reservatins and same that are still 1st cme first serve. We lve Azalea campgrund! It was a nice visit. Enjyed the ranger prgram. Very disappinted in the small size f mst campsites, and the cst f shwers. We wasted 20 minutes waiting at the bus sign in frnt f the market nly t find it was n lnger a bus stp. Then waited half-hur at actual stp as 2 empty buses passed by. It was a really fantastic visit. We enjyed the beauty f nature and we were happy t see wildlife, especially bears. It was a very enlightening trip 80

Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 It was a wnderful visit, and I lve the utdrs but it wuld be nice if there were mre bathrms and shwers available t have the cmfrts f hme within the great utdrs It was awesme. We lved it. Please put sap in the bathrm. It was beautiful and we have a very nice time It was beautiful! We enjyed everything abut it including the drive in and ut! It was great It was great! This survey is t lng. It was great! We had a very gd time. It was ne f the mst amazing places I've ever seen. We must prtect thse trees! It was very nice It was wnderful. We were s happy t share this with ur daughter. She lved the trip. It wuld be nice when entering the park t be able t reserve 1st cme 1st served campsites instead f having t rush t get a site, then drive back t see the things yu missed. Beautiful park! Very peaceful! It's a fantastic place. We had a great time and will be back in the future! It's my favrite place. We cme here at least nce a year. Keep up the gd wrk Keep up the gd wrk. We wuld like t see mre rangers n the hiking trails. Ldgeple campgrund - the sites were t clse t each ther and nt enugh restrms - wuld have liked shwers with restrms in campgrund all) fee fr shwers is OK Ldgeple picnic area is wnderful. We bserved native trut - appeared t be brk trut) feed n surface insects fr abut 1 hur in a pl n the west side. Reminded me f camping at Clver Meadws and Granite Creek just nrth f Kings Canyn. Lve cming t the parks! Have been since I can remember. Need mre campsites! We were lucky t find a site. It was s full, please make mre campsites! Lve the park - I did experience sme physical difficulties while visiting General Sherman. It was a scary mment and we did nt see rangers r emergency call bx. Lve the park and the develped campgrunds are great but there needs t be mre shwers available t nn-rv campers. Thanks! Lve the trails. Thank yu. Lved it, best facility we visited Lved it Lved it! Fr my first time camping! Wuld cme again! Lved it! Very impressed with rads, markers, and cleanliness f trails Lved it! We will return. Lved it. Very enjyable. Lved ur visit. Will be back! Lved the park and Azalea campgrund! Wuld nly suggest mre bear-prf trash cans in mre lcatins within campsites t discurage peple frm littering Lved the visit Make a discunt if yu visit every NP in Califrnia Mre cnsistency with cleaning with facilities like restrms wuld make fr a mre cmfrtable stay. Mre fd lcatins with healthy alternatives. Mre infrmatinal signs with directins and mileage e.g. verlk fr Lake Hume). Overall, very satisfied with first visit t park and will return. Mre hiking trails wuld be a gd idea Mre picnic tables, cleaner restrms with water t wash yur hands 81

Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 Mre places t buy r eat fd. My husband has a fear f heights. This was the last f several natinal parks that we visited this summer. We wuld have liked t have spent mre time there but he had had enugh f driving steep, switchback rads with few guardrails, fast drivers, and RVs. I understand the desire t keep the parks in their natural state, but sme frm f guardrails, n the dwnhill side f the muntains, that blend with the scenery wuld be nice and wuld make drivers like my husband mre cmfrtable. We were pleased t have been able t spend a little time at the parks. Need better rads t the Ble Tree, culdn't find shwers at my campsite in Sunset Need better signs. We gt lst. Need mre affrdable accmmdatins in r near the park. We stpped at the Cmfrt Inn Three Rivers which was expensive and nly k. Stpped at ther places during ur vacatin which were much better and cst the same r less. N hrses! Als make it easier fr lw impact tent campers t get sites. There shuld be different tiers f campers, campers wh are just camping at trailhead waiting fr trail passes shuld small campsites. I picture 3 tiers: Tier 1) Campers/RVs/city slicker campsites. Tier 2) Nrmal bring the kids ut camping in tents car camping). Tier 3) Simulated rustic envirnment tents nly and quiet) spts. N, thanks Nte: please, please have signs made in Spanish and English t let visitrs knw that tilet paper can be flushed dwn. It seemed t ur grup that many visitrs drpped the paper n the flr next t the tilet! S disgusting, we were hrrified hw dirty the bathrms were in Ptwisha campgrund! Maybe plastic bags in each stall t. Thank yu. Again, bathrm situatin very messy! S disappinted, this was the wrst we have seen them! On the hiking trails it wuld be nice t have an idea f hw easy a hike wuld be. Maybe, 1-5 graded, written n the signs. On tw subsequent days in the early mrnings n hiking trails we encuntered 50 large grups f crss-cuntry runners. Day 1 - between Panther Gap and Mehrten Meadw. Day 2 - On the circle Meadw Trail in Grant Frest. These grups were larger and nisy. Particularly in the Giant Frest where ne expects quiet and slitude early in the mrning 8:00 am). These runners were annying and disrupting. One adult had dangerus fall in darkness f Crystal Cave, I lve the natinal parks - thank yu! Maybe a sign reminding peple that their taxes fund the park? Seems these days that peple need reminders as t why taxes are imprtant. Paying fr sites and nt aware f ccupatin was a cncern Please cmplete rad cnstructin ASAP Please set up an express entry lane during the summer fr lcal card/ pass hlders. Als, please send law enfrcement rangers thrugh ppular swimming hles mre frequently. Excessive alchl, drugs, underage drinking, undesirable behavirs, theft, dgs ff leash, dgs ff trail and in water ften make fr unpleasant park experiences. Als, many f these peple engage in drunk driving when leaving the park. Prices fr everything are way t high Prvided mre ldge place Ranger at wilderness permit statin was very friendly and infrmative Rangers were nt as free with infrmatin as ther parks. Did nt ffer tips, etc. unless we specifically asked switchbacks n Kings Canyn Rad). Rangers were super helpful as were tram drivers, thank yu Recycling bins at ldge wuld be helpful. Staff was great. Lved park. We live in Maine but hpe t return. Restrms in campgrunds need upgraded Restrms nt clean at Ptwisha and Buckeye Flat. The hstesses abuse their authrity and can be very rude. 82

Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 Rad cnstructin was a definite prblem - lng waits! Rad cnstructin was incnvenient and made fr a lng, ht drive. Thugh when cmpleted will mst likely be great. Sequia and Kings Canyn NPs are great parks with wnderful rangers. Thank yu fr such a wnderful time. Sequia and Kings Canyn NPs are awesme and quite underrated. Enjyed this visit a lt and will recmmend t cme t all my friends! Shuld have a large pen ski area with rpe tw fr skiing and sledding. Winter play areas are small, crwded and dangerus. Shuttle service was great. We used it a lt. Thank yu Thank yu fr the rangers dedicatin and efficiently Thank yu fr the Sequia Shuttle Thank yu Thank yu Thank yu! I enjy visiting and taking family and friends. Keep up the great wrk. Thank yu! It was great! My husband and I preferred 20 years ag, because it was mre peaceful then. But the children were very impressed. Thanks fr helping us t have a fantastic week Thanks fr the pstcard The cnstructin details shuld have been psted n the website. Althugh it said there culd have been delays frm minutes, it did nt state the details cncerning the up-muntain travel times n the hur) r the dwn-muntain travel directly after the dwn travel f cars). Mre infrmatin/encuragement abut using the cnvenient shuttles in different languages s peple will stp driving s much. The first tw days Sunday, 8/5 and Mnday, 8/6) the restrm situatin was nt acceptable. N ne came t service the restrms either day; the tilet paper was almst ut and the insides were a mess. Even when the restrms were serviced, the tilets were nt cleaned. Excrement stained ne seat and bwl all the way frm Mnday t Thursday. The individual campsites were a little small and t clse. Mre shwers. At every campgrund. It's a breathtakingly beautiful place. The natinal parks f western America are abslutely amazing! We were speechless because f their beauty and dimensin. Thank yu s much fr making a visit easy and cnvenient. The new entry system frm 180 lks great. I d hpe we can actually use the restrms near there nw. The park is a natinal treasure f immense beauty and pwer and a surce f jy. It seems very prfundly cared fr and maintained. We care DEEPLY abut climate change. Thank yu fr yur service! Park directinal signs were cnfusing near cave gt VERY lst. The park was great but in the campgrund, it wuld be a lt better if there were shwers, handy sinks t wash dishes The parks are much mre than a Natinal treasure, they are wrld heritage sites that we the peple f the United States must frever prtect. Thanks t the NPS fr being such gd stewards f the wrld s mst precius assets. Thanks, Rick Haas. The restrm smell nt gd. We wuld wish t see mre bear. Yur park is beautiful. Thank yu! The restrms are nasty. Please clean them!! The restrms were the wrst I have seen here as well as Ysemite!! I was ashamed fr ur freign visitrs t see that mess!! The rad cnstructin in the park was awful. N warning was given t the distance f cnstructin r time f delay. 83

Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 The rad cnstructin was incnvenient but the imprvements lk nice. We're happy the park is being imprved fr future generatins. The rad t Mineral King must be imprved. Thank yu. The services have declined and are nt cmpetitive with ther campgrunds. Need better bathrms and general stre. The student infrming us f this prject was passinate and dedicated t this prject. Thank yu! There was n bus stp available ging back t Ldgeple frm visitr center. Had t carry tw-yearld sn and daughter back t campgrund! Lved bus system, but unhappy n stp available back t campgrund. There were a lt f bees at ur campsite There were webs and spiders in the ladies and men's rms utside the visitr's center These are nt enugh shuttles r parking space. In Zin Natinal Park private vehicles are left utside the park and shuttles run every 5/10 minutes. We had t walk fr 2 miles at dusk t get back t ur car! These are very nice parks. Please d nt let them get vercrwded like Ysemite. It is unenjyable when there are t many peple. This year was the first year that the restrms were extremely dirty and disgusting, and there were als fallen trees in the rivers that had nt been remved. Travel times n Ggle Maps highly unreliable. It seemed like ranger prgrams were nly at Ldgeple, nt ther campsites. It seemed like shuttles service was nly cnvenient frm Ldgeple. Water was nt available at sme parking spts and trailheads like Crescent Meadw/ Tharpe lg. Bear bxes with latch were easier and less nisy than with key-in-slt. We had a great time and hpe t cme back sn! Trip was very gd. Wnders f the wrld. Wish that I had mre time t spend in each park. Try t accmmdate dg wners. Designated areas ff leash s we can wrk them, and sme trails which allw them and require cleanup bags fr them). If the dg is disciplined and bviusly quiet and under cntrl f the wner leave them alne. Lve rangers, but they seemed ver zealus. Unfrtunately lng delay due t rad cnstructin. But we d understand that maintenance is necessary. Suggestin: pst parking schedule t enable better rganizatin f visits. Used access pass, appreciated learning hw tw parks s clse tgether, have such different natural features/characteristics Very beautiful wall alng rad 198, newly built that increased safety Very enjyable. Ldgeple campsites are very nice. Very enjyable, very nice campers n either side, need mre clear inf abut length f time it takes t get frm entrance t different places in park Very helpful and friendly rangers and staff Very interesting visit. I'll recmmend this park. Very nice Very nice park, but t much peple in August! I cme back in Spring r Autumn. Thanks fr yur great American Park Service. Very pr, and expensive fd at dinner at Grant Grve. Our waitpersn seemed t knw nthing abut the menu, gave us wrng answers t ur questins and seemed untrained. Was a great experience, t much peple especially the antelpe. There shuld be less grups in a larger time frame. Was great, Cindy Wd was an amazing ranger, had a lt f gd infrmatin, very friendly. Trails were in great cnditin. We always enjy ur visit. We lk frward t the next time we visit the park. 84

Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 We are nw intrducing the 4th generatin f ur family t Kings Canyn Natinal Park. Especially the Clumbine Picnic Area. We encuntered delays due t rad repairs that reduced my rating f the rads fr this visit. Otherwise the rads were gd. Assistance at visitr centers was helpful. Enjyed the museums and lved hiking the Cngress Trail, but gt very turned arund n the trails due t signs that were nt specific enugh fr a casual hiker. Shuttle service was much appreciated t get us back t ur car s we culd hike ne way a lng distance rather than having t hike a lp. We enjy the great diversity Sequia and Kings Canyn has t ffer. Nice variety clse in prximity. Thanks fr everything! We enjyed ur stay. I will be back! We enjyed ur visit We enjyed the NP hwever the camping experience was nt the best. The campgrund was elegant and quiet hwever there was nly a single tilet facility fr wmen/men. It was nt at all up t par with ther NPs we have visited, e.g. Yellwstne, Big Bend. There was n light at night in the bathrm area. The bathrms were clgged. It was really disgusting. We prbably wuld nt visit this park again. Crystal Springs Grup Camping. Als, yu shuld have recycling in this campgrund. Did nt see the ranger checking campgrunds. This shuld be dne mre frequently. We enjyed the park very much; just didn't like the accmmdatin that was given t us by the NPS reservatin system. We had a great day. Thanks We had a great time We had a great time and wuld like t visit the parks again We had a great visit and was impressed with the park We had a lvely hike frm the General Sherman Tree t Crescent Meadw. At the picnic area near crescent meadw we stpped t eat ur packed lunches. When lking at the map f this area, when I saw that there were restrms I assumed there wuld be running water and that I wuld be able t replenish ur water bttles befre walking back t the General Sherman Tree. Unfrtunately there was n water available, and we culd nt d the return part f the hike back t the General Sherman Tree because it was a very ht day and it didn't seem like a gd idea t hike with n water available. We ended up taking the shuttle bus back t the parking area. This is why I suggested in the ther part f the questinnaire that there shuld at least be a vending machine with water at the picnic/rest rm area. We had a very nice day trip - very friendly peple everywhere! Thanks. P.S. culd nt take survey nline? We had a wnderful experience We had a wnderful time in Sequia. Can't wait t g back next year. We had a wnderful time there. Thanks and keep it up! We had tickets fr the cave, but a wasp s nest clsed the cave fr the day. I hpe t visit again and als see Kings Canyn. The rangers were helpful. We liked it very much and wand t cme again sn We liked yur park better than Ysemite We lve Cedar Grve! Please make Wi-Fi available ALL DAY at the Cedar Grve Ldge/stre. Als pay phne system at Cedar Grve des nt wrk. Verizn des cllect cins n a regular basis. When phne is full f cins, yu cannt make calls, in an emergency, smebdy culd DIE!! We lve ging t the parks every year. They are a true treasure. We lve hw peaceful it was and the beauty f nature We lve ur annual visits t Kings Canyn - the grup sites in Cedar Grve are terrific, thugh we need a few mre bear bxes We lve Sequia and Kings Canyn 85

Sequia and Kings Canyn Natinal Parks VSP Visitr Study 258 August 2-8, 2012 We lved it and wuld like t g back We lved it We lved it We lved ur visit We lved ur visit We lved the park, less peple than Ysemite, with the same great views We met tw stellar rangers - ne was Aimee and the ther we met n the Dn Cecil Trail n 8/6/12. We had a glrius time and will return. Walking trails frm the Cedar Grve campgrunds t Canyn View Overlk, Knapp's Cabin, Raring River Falls shuld be develped t encurage a reductin in car travel. Pie-in-the-sky wuld be a bike prgram like the ne in DC where there are self-serve bike rentals. Yu pay w/a credit card that unlcks the bike fr yu and prtects against theft. Peple culd use these t travel t Rad's End fr the Mist Falls hike. Over time bike paths culd be established r have sharrw plicies where bikes are given full use f the lane in certain designated areas that have pulls uts s bikes can let cars by. Amphitheater needs t be shwn n all maps at Sheep's Creek, Mraine, etc. We were at Mraine and reading psted "prgram" calendars but had n idea where the amphitheater was fund it n a map at Cedar Grve Village - a hefty car drive away--bridge was ut). We gt cnflicting infrmatin regarding the playing f music. One ranger tld us that music needed t be kept at a level where it can nly be heard in the user s site which is impractical since sund travels easily in a natural envirnment but it s better than nthing) and anther ranger said He can play it as lud as he likes during nn-quiet hurs 10 p.m. 7 a.m.). This is a public space. We fund this 2 nd statement inaccurate since a campgrund is nt a public space fr example like the beach r a city park) since we pay fees t use ur campsite. Further, even in a city park, ne can be cited fr nuisance. We realize this is a cmplex issue since music prvides pleasure t sme and we als realize the park is depending n peple s general civility, which wrks t a gd degree. Still we questin the missin f ur natinal parks. We g t them t remve urselves frm the stresses f ur urban envirnment were we are cnstantly cmprmising ur wn pleasures the sund f birds, the wind, human activity w/ut the aid f electricity, batteries and amplificatin, water, animals). We really enjyed ur visit. Very beautiful park, very well maintained, great staff at the visitr center. We stayed at the Wuksachi Ldge and ate at the dining rm fr all meals. Yu need a snack bar r cafe fr the times when yu want a quick meal. We went n the fur hur tram and gt back after 2:00 pm. It tk us ver an hur and a half t get ur fd and the manager never aplgized t us. Server was kind - but nt his fault. They cmp d the lunch fr 7 f us but the manager shuld have cme t us. Als there was n sap r twels r air dryer in any f the bathrms at Ldge. We thrughly enjyed ur visit especially hw accessible great hiking and beauty was. We can tell fees are put t gd use. Thank yu! We want t see mre bears next time We wanted t visit a cavern but were unable t because we did nt have prir reservatins. I was very disappinted. We went t spent the day with my grandsn, wh was a cunselr at Hume Lake Christian Camp. It was a beautiful campsite! We were bked int Sequia Ldge by the NPS. Fr the price we paid $200/night) the accmmdatins were very unsatisfactry. The Three Rivers entry needs t prvide mre and better dining services, als there was nly a pizza place pen - luckily, the pizza was excellent! We were nt able t g t Mr Rck since the rad was clsed apparently, that's t bad. Other than that, very nice stay. We weren't aware we'd have t use buses until we gt there. Yu dn't ask abut them. Very crwded, waits, but nt as bad as I expected 1st day. We wuld really like if yu guys put shwers in the bathrm, and build markets clse t the campsite 86
