1 Tasmanian Turism Snapsht Year ending December 2014 Intrductin The Tasmanian Turism Snapsht is published every quarter, using the latest figures frm the Tasmanian Visitr Survey, the Internatinal Visitr Survey and the Natinal Visitr Survey, t prvide yu with a statistical verview abut internatinal and interstate visitrs t Tasmania, as well as intrastate travel by Tasmanians. Infrmatin abut these three surveys is cntained at the back f the Snapsht. A cmmentary n the data is prvided as a separate dcument n Turism Tasmania s website. While the Tasmanian Turism Snapsht prvides a useful verview f visitrs t Tasmania, mre detailed statistics are available at Turism Tasmania s crprate website at The TVS database service prvides yu with easy nline access t a range f ther useful statistics and tables abut ur visitrs which yu can investigate and print fr yur wn use. Ttal Visitatin t Tasmania (Surce: Tasmanian Visitr Survey) Key Results: Fr the year ending December 2014, there were 1,068,100 visitrs, up 3 per cent frm 1,033,600 fr the previus year. Ttal nights spent by visitrs in the state increased by 4 per cent t 9.31 millin. Visitr expenditure increased by 11 per cent t $1.757 billin. The number f interstate visitrs t Tasmania increased by 2 per cent t 918,600 (was 897,200). Summary: In terms f visitr numbers frm Tasmania s key markets, Victria remained steady, New Suth Wales remained steady, and Queensland increased by 13 per cent. Hliday visitrs increased by 16 per cent fr the year ending December 2014, hliday nights increased by 13 per cent and hliday expenditure increased by 19 per cent. Thse wh came t visit friends and relatives (VFR) decreased by 1 per cent fr the year. The number f nights VFR visitrs spent in Tasmania increased by 1 per cent while VFR expenditure increased by 14 per cent. The ttal number f visitrs hlidaying in Tasmania during the year ending December 2014 was 505,800, up 16 per cent cmpared t the previus year (was 435,100). The ttal number f nights spent by hliday visitrs t Tasmania fr the year ending December 2014 was 4.6 millin, up 13 per cent frm the previus year (was 4.1 millin). Hliday visitr expenditure fr the year was up 19 per cent t $1 billin (was $968 millin). Of all visitrs, 174,000 (dwn 9 per cent) were n business while 28,800 (dwn 13 per cent) were travelling t attend a cnference r cnventin. Fr the year ending December 2014, data frm the TVS fr the fur turism regins reprted the fllwing changes in visitr numbers: Suthern, up 6 per cent; East Cast, up 8 per cent; Nrthern, up 2 per cent; Cradle Cast, up 6 per cent. Fr the year ending December 2014, 89 per cent f all visitrs t Tasmania travelled by scheduled air services and 10 per cent travelled by sea. The ttal number f visitrs travelling by scheduled air was up 3 per cent and sea services was up 4 per cent frm the previus year. 1
2 Interstate Visitatin t Tasmania (Surce: Tasmanian Visitr Survey) The ttal number f interstate visitrs t Tasmania fr the year ending December 2014 was 918,600, up 2 per cent frm 897,200 the previus year. The ttal number f nights spent by interstate visitrs t Tasmania fr the year ending December 2014 was 7.08 millin, up 3 per cent frm the previus year (was 6.90 millin). Interstate visitr expenditure increased by 13 per cent t $1.48 billin (was $1.31 billin in the year ending December 2013). Of all interstate visitrs, 398,000 were n hliday (up 16 per cent), 279,000 were visiting friends r relatives (dwn 2 per cent), 165,000 were n business (dwn 8 per cent), and 26,000 were travelling t attend a cnference r cnventin (dwn 13 per cent). In terms f visitatin t Tasmania frm the key interstate markets, Victria remained steady t 401,700, NSW remained steady t 229,400, and Queensland increased by 13 per cent t 148,600. Internatinal visitr nights spent in Australia increased by 3 per cent t 221 millin. Ttal expenditure by internatinal visitrs in Australia fr the year ending September 2014 increased by 5 per cent t $20 billin 1 (including package expenditure). Hliday spend was $7 billin (including package expenditure) fr the year, increased by 8 per cent frm the year ending September Fr Australia s largest surce markets, the fllwing changes t visitr numbers t Australia were recrded: New Zealand, up 4 per cent; China, up 10 per cent; United Kingdm, up 6 per cent and the USA, up 11 per cent. Summary Tasmania Tasmania received 167,800 internatinal visitrs during the year ending September 2014, up 8 per cent frm 155,300 the previus year. The number f nights that internatinal visitrs spent in Tasmania increased by 2 per cent t 2.98 millin, and the average length f stay decreased by 6 per cent t 18 nights. Expenditure by internatinal visitrs increased by 13 per cent t $254 millin 2. Hliday visitrs t Tasmania increased by 13 per cent t 125,100, while VFR visitrs increased by 6 per cent t 31,600. Hliday nights decreased by 3 per cent t 1.44 millin, while the average length f stay fr hliday visitrs decreased by 14 per cent t 12 nights. 10 Quarter ending December 2014 The TVS reprts the fllwing key findings fr visitrs during the Octber - December 2014 quarter. The ttal number f visitrs t Tasmania fr the December quarter 2014 was 282,000, up 2 per cent frm 276,900 the previus year (Fig. 1). The ttal number f nights spent by visitrs t Tasmania fr the December quarter 2014 decreased by 1 per cent t 2.17 millin (was 2.20 millin) (Fig. 2). Visitr expenditure was $460 millin, up 4 per cent frm the same quarter f the previus year (was $444.5 millin) (Fig. 3). Of all visitrs fr the quarter, 137,900 (up 11 per cent) were n hliday, 80,000 (up 1 per cent) were visiting friends r relatives, 43,200 (dwn 7 per cent) were n business, and 9,400 (dwn 24 per cent) were travelling t attend a cnference r cnventin (Fig. 4). Tasmanian Visitr Survey (TVS) The TVS is an exit survey designed t prvide a prfile f the characteristics, travel behaviur and expenditure f internatinal and dmestic visitrs t Tasmania. It is natinally acknwledged as the mst reliable surce f statistical data abut visitrs t Tasmania, being based n a sample f mre than 9,000 visitrs per year. As an island, Tasmania has a natural advantage ver ther destinatins when it cmes t surveys f this type, because visitrs can be mre accurately cunted as they depart via air and sea prts. Mre detailed statistics frm the TVS are als available thrugh Turism Tasmania s crprate website at The TVS Analyser service prvides yu with easy nline access t a range f ther useful visitr statistics and tables frm the TVS which yu can investigate and print fr yur wn use. Internatinal Visitr Survey (IVS) The IVS is administered by Turism Research Australia. The IVS is the mst cmprehensive surce f infrmatin n internatinal visitrs t Australia. The survey gathers infrmatin frm visitrs abut, amng ther things; the number f nights they stayed in Australia, travel arrangements, reasns fr visiting, places visited, infrmatin surces they used t find ut abut Australia prir t leaving hme, impressins f aspects f Australia, incme earned and expenditure n the trip. The IVS samples 40,000 departing, shrt-term internatinal travellers in the departure lunges f eight internatinal airprts acrss Australia - Sydney, Melburne, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin and the Gld Cast. Natinal Visitr Survey (NVS) The NVS is als administered by Turism Research Australia. The NVS measures the characteristics and travel patterns f dmestic turists within Australia, including intrastate day and vernight travel. The survey results cme frm telephne interviews cnducted with an annual sample f 120,000 Australian residents. The survey cllects details abut their recent travel fr day trips, trips invlving vernight stays and verseas travel. The NVS prvides the nly surce f infrmatin abut day and vernight travel by Tasmanians in their wn state. Why the TVS and IVS figures dn t match up Each survey is cnducted by a different rganisatin which uses different sampling and weighting methds t determine ttal numbers. As a result, the statistics frm each survey will give differing results fr identical subjects and are unlikely t tally if added tgether. Cautin: Yu are advised t exercise care when interpreting figures cntained in this reprt r TVS Analyser. These figures are cllected frm a sample f visitrs. They may be different frm the real figure if data frm 100 per cent f all visitrs culd have been cllected. Therefre, these estimates may be subject t chance variatin, r sampling errr. Smaller estimates under 1000 must be treated with greater cautin. 11
