Page 1 f 1 Stve and Lantern Permit: Fuel Types FUEL TYPES FOR STOVES AND LANTERNS If yu are cnsidering purchasing a stve r lantern, the nly way t make yur selectin is t decide n the seasns and altitude yu wish t use the appliance alng with the fuel that gives yu the best perfrmance. Cst, cnvenience and perfrmance differ with each fuel type; s t make an educated purchase decisin the fllwing fuel guidelines will prvide yu with infrmatin that will help guide yur decisin. Prpane Fuel White Gas Fuel Butane/Prpane Fuel Pwermax Fuel Mst cmmnly used fuel with campers because f cnvenience and ease f use. There is n pumping r n priming f fuel. The user simply attaches the fuel cylinder t the appliance its ready t g. Gas canisters are pressure-regulated at 15 psi which ensure steady fuel pressure as the fuel is used which is much easier than using White gas. Dwnsides are that canisters can't be recycled, and in cld t freezing temperatures, the fuel des nt perfrm well at all as the pressure in the canister is affected by air temperature. Cylinders weigh in at apprx 2-3lbs which is the heaviest fuel canister f all fuel types. Main advantages: Cnvenience f cnnectivity. Fund in mst stres. Cnstant pressure n fuel delivery. Main disadvantages: Weight f canister. Cld weather reduces fuel effectiveness Canister is nt recyclable. Als called white gas r camping fuel. This fuel is gd and burns ht in winter temperatures r at high altitude, unlike butane and prpane. Cleman Fuel is very refined, and burns htter and cleaner better than ther liquid fuels. It's relatively inexpensive and is cmmnly fund in many stres. Dwnside is that the fuel needs t be pumped t maintain pressure. Main advantages: Heat utput and ecnmy. Fund in mst stres. Main disadvantages: Evaprates quickly. Requires canisters t hld fuel. Pisnus. Lanterns r stves that use this fuel need cnstant pumping t maintain pressure Butane/Prpane mix canisters are lightweight, re-sealable, and easily cnnect t stves and lanterns. Mst canister appliances are lightweight and simple t use, s if yu rely n small size and weight this fuel canister is ideal. Dwnsides are that canisters can't be recycled, and in cld t freezing temperatures, the fuel des nt perfrm well at all as the pressure in the canister is affected by air temperature. This fuel perates best in warm t ht cnditins. Main advantages: Cnvenience and light weight. Main disadvantages: Cld weather reduces fuel effectiveness. Canister is nt recyclable. May need mre lts f canisters fr lng trips. Cleman's exclusive high-perfrmance butane/prpane blend dramatically extends the peratinal range f backpacking appliances. High altitude and incredible cld d nt affect this fuel. It's delivered via a liquid withdraw system that ensures cnsistent utput, even when the fuel level in the canister is lw. There is n pressure drp ff that is experienced with prpane and butane canisters, which rely n vapr pressure. Each Pwermax cartridge can be detached / reattached withut leakage. Canisters are recyclable. This fuel can be used n regular Prpane/Butane lanterns which make it a highly desirable fuel. Main advantages: Fur-seasn perfrmance and lightweight, recyclable canisters. Main disadvantage: Fuel is mre cstly, may need lts f canisters fr lng trips

Page 1 f 6 Stve and Lantern Permit: Safe use f Lanterns Objective: The bjective f this wrkshp guide is fr the Scut Leader and/r Scut yuth t be able t describe and demnstrate safe assembly and lighting f a Lantern. T btain yur permit, yu will need t demnstrate knwledge f general Lantern safety guidelines AND safe peratin f the Camp lanterns that yur scut grup uses. Hw d Lanterns Operate? All white gas (Naphtha r camp fuel) lanterns perate the same way. Flammable fuel is stred in a vessel where it is pressurized and released thrugh a tube generatr that allws the fuel t vaprize befre it reaches the mantle. The fuel is then passed thrugh a burner where it is mixed with xygen and cllected in a clth mantle. An ignitin surce is applied clse t the mantle which ignites the fuel vapr which in turn created a luminescent glw which prvides light. The mantle starts life as a wven ceramic impregnated clth. The additin f ceramic helps radiate heat as visible light frm a flame. The ceramic must be "burned ut" with a match prir t its first use. When lit, the mantle glws incandescently. Fr prtectin frm the high temperatures prduced and t stabilize the airflw, a cylindrical glass shield called the glbe r chimney is placed arund the mantle(s). Types f Lanterns There are three cmmn types f lanterns used in Scuting, Pressurized liquid fuel, Gas Canister and Candle. The Pressurized liquid and Gas Canister lanterns are cmmnly used in Scuting and each requires its wn specific instructins fr use. Pressurized liquid fuel Lanterns: These lanterns require fuel t be placed in a tank and then pressurized via a small hand pump. Typical fuels fr these lanterns include white Gas (Naphtha) and unleaded aut Gasline. Gas Canister Lanterns: These lanterns use fuel which is pressurized in prepackaged tanks. The fuel tanks have a single screw cnnectin which mates with the lantern. On cnnectin, the gas is released and held in check via the fuel flw cntrl knb. Cmmn fuels include Prpane and butane and gaining mre prevalence Pwermax fuel which is a mix f Butane and Prpane. Candle Lanterns Candle lanterns are small, lightweight and require small candles and hence thrw ut far less light. These lanterns are very similar t the larger lanterns in that they have a handle, glass shield and the fuel is a candle (paraffin and/r bees wax) with a catch basin fr spilled wax. All f the abve lanterns are t be used in well ventilated cnditins, away frm flammable materials, especially never inside nyln tents." (Risk f carbn mnxide pisning). GENERAL LANTERN USE AND SAFETY GUIDELINES Check yur Lantern Prir t use, ensure that yu have the instructins n hw t use yur lantern and/r are familiar with hw t safely assemble and start it up. Ensure that all f the parts t yur lantern are present. Never use a lantern with a cracked glass shield as there is risk that the glass may break in yur hands. USE THE CORRECT FUEL fr yur lantern. NEVER MIX FUELS n single fuel appliances. Always make sure that a suitable first aid kit is present

Page 2 f 6 Stve and Lantern Permit: Safe use f Lanterns Transprtatin Fr Pressurized Liquid Fuel lanterns, never transprt a lantern with fuel in the tank. Always carry the fuel in an apprved fuel tank AND NOT in anything that lks similar t any fd cntainer r a water bttle Fr Gas Cartridge lanterns never transprt with the gas canister attached. Keep the fuel tank away frm any heat r ignitin surce. Transprt lanterns in an envirnment where they will nt be shaken r impacted by any ther sharp instrument as this may break the glass shield and/r break the mantles. Cnsider using a rigid cntainer if available frm the manufacturer, and/r padding fr the glass shield." Fuel Strage and Safe Campsite Layut Always stre the fuel fr yur lantern away frm yur cking and fd lcatins Whether yu have a Gas Cartridge r Liquid fuel lantern, always refuel the lantern tank r replace the canister away frm yur cking and fd strage areas Ensure that there are n ignitin surces in yur fuel strage area Filling the fuel tank n a Lantern Pressurized liquid fuel Lanterns Use a fuel filter when filling a lantern, as the filter will reduce sediment which culd clg the lantern and cause it t burn erratically A lantern gets ht when it is used. As the fuel tank is an integral part f a lantern s allw the lantern t cl befre refueling. Inspect the lantern after filling the tank. Never use a lantern if there is a fuel leak T avid verfilling, keep the lantern level. Stick t the recmmended levels. Ensure abut 1/3 tank is left as air therwise the lantern wn t pressurize prperly and it will burn erratically. Tighten the fuel cap securely as this avids spillage as yu carry the lantern Clear up all spillage Gas Cartridge Lanterns Check the fuel level befre yu cnnect the canister t the lantern Yu may have t judge this by weight Screw the canister t the lantern and ensure that it makes a tight seal. Use extreme cautin when replacing a gas canister n a lantern while it is ht. Lantern Mantles The mantle n yur lantern is simply a meshed fabric that has been cated with several chemicals that allw it t fluresce when lit. The mantles need t be burned t pale grey clr and nt have any hles in them prir t use. If there are hles in the mantles they need t be replaced as fuel vapr pp n ignitin leak during peratin and the lamp will nt burn evenly. If yu have t replace a mantle, fllw this prcedure: 1. Remve the lantern cap and remve the glass shield. 2. Remve the brken mantle including the draw-string and dispse f the mantle ashes in an envirnmentally friendly fashin. 3. Slip a new mantle n the gas pipe and tie securely with the draw-string and trim Cnsider purchasing mantles with metal clips which are easier t use 4. Light a match and hld t the bttm f the mantle. The mantle will ignite and smlder fr a few mments as the chemicals in the clth burn. Ensure that the whle mantle is cmpletely burned t ash. *DO NOT INHALE SMOKE OR FUMES FROM THE MANTLE* 5. Reassemble the lantern.

Page 3 f 6 Stve and Lantern Permit: Safe use f Lanterns Lighting the Lantern Envirnment 1. Never light a lantern inside yur tent. Ever. Nt even in the tent prch. Tents are remarkably flammable. 2. Ensure that there is at plenty f air space arund yur lantern If yu dn t ignite the fuel vapr immediately, it can build up in the glass shield and a small ball f flame can erupt. It is gd practice t light the lantern away frm yur cking area. 3. Ensure that yur lantern is psitined n a flat and secure base Ignitin Prcedures Lanterns Pressurized Liquid Fuel lanterns 1. Prime the fuel tank by pumping the crrect number f times If this is nt dne, the lantern may burn erratically due t incrrect fuel pressure 2. Prir t ignitin, check the mantles are in gd shape and identify the hles in the base f the lantern 3. D nt stand / r lean ver the burner when yu attempt t light the fuel (in case f flare up) 4. Strike a match, put it thrugh the hle in the base and psitin near the burner prir t turning n the fuel A lng match r taper is best suited fr this activity as ften the gap frm base t mantle is lnger than a regular match length. A spark igniter can be used, but this can get in the way f tying new mantles. 5. Slwly turn n the fuel s that the fuel vapr is slwly released If fuel is released t quickly it can blw ut the flame r generate a large ball f gas which ignites in a ball f fire. If this happens, the persn jumps back, frgetting t turn the gas ff, creating further build up f gas and a future prblem. 6. When the mantle catches fire slwly increase the fuel flw t help the lantern burn brighter T fast and the flw f fuel vapr may verwhelm the flame and extinguish it. 7. If the fuel vapr ignites and then ges ut Turn ff the fuel t stp a large build up f fuel vapr Wait a few mments t allw the fuel vapr t disperse if it des nt ignite the fuel first time Repeat previus steps 8. Fuel Flare up. On ignitin the flame may smetime flares up with a pp. If this is happens turn the fuel knb t reduce fuel flw Gas Canister lanterns Gas Canister lanterns cntain fuel that is already at crrect pressure. There are tw types f gas canister lanterns, thse that require manual ignitin and thse that cme with pre-ignitin. In the case f manual ignitin, fllw the same steps utlined fr Pressurized fuel lanterns. Fr lanterns that cme with pre-ignitin (smetimes called Instastart ignitin) all yu need t d is turn the fuel knb and a spark is autmatically prvided. Brightness T achieve the mst luminescent light, adjust the fuel knb n yur lantern. With Gas Canister lanterns, the pressure is maintained thrughut, hwever with pressurized fuel lanterns, the lantern will need pressurizing at frequent intervals.

Page 4 f 6 Stve and Lantern Permit: Safe use f Lanterns DANGERS WITH LANTERNS TREAT LANTERNS WITH GREAT RESPECT. Lanterns get very ht (300 Deg C) when running. It is easy t see a lantern which is running as it makes nise and has illuminatin. A lantern that has just been turned ff will nt be s easy t determine if it is ht s exercise great cautin when tuching a lantern therwise yu may incur a burn that requires hspital treatment. Keep yur distance Always place a lantern in an area where there is relatively little traffic. Where pssible, use a lantern hlder as this will place the lantern ut f harm s way yet prvide sufficient illuminatin. Lantern Cap The cap is directly abve the mantles where the fuel vapr is burnt. The cap gets very ht (Over 150 Deg C). NEVER PICK UP A LANTERN BY THE CAP. Lantern Handle Always leave the handle dwn psitin. Ht air rises and this will heat the handle. If yu pick up the lantern with a heated handle the shck will cause yu t drp the lantern which may further cause danger frm fuel vapr leakage nt the mantles and shards f glass as the shield may break. Glass Shield Never tuch the glass shield. The glass prtects the mantles frm the utside elements and helps prvide a cnstantly heated envirnment in which t burn fuel. The glass shield will reach ver 200 Deg C. Fuel Type Knw yur lantern. Check the labeling fr the fuel that yu can use. NEVER substitute anther fuel n single fuel type appliances. Packing up yur Lantern A lantern shuld nly be packed away when it has cled dwn and can be tuched by a bare hand. Turn the knb n the lantern t OFF. Allw the lantern t cl dwn. It may take between 5 t 15 minutes fr the glass and metal cmpnent t cl dwn s plan this time int yur agenda. Remve the fuel tank frm the lantern when the lantern has cled dwn Pressurized liquid fuel lanterns Take the lantern away frm yur camp area t the fuel strage area and depressurize it. Pint the fuel tank away frm yu and thers when yu release the pressure as there may be a slight spray f fuel n depressurizatin. Fuel degrades when it cmes int cntact with air, s empty the fuel back int an apprved fuel cntainer. Gas Cartridge lanterns Unscrew the canister quickly in rder t nt let t much gas escape Lantern Fuels Fr liquid fuel lanterns, ENSURE THAT YOU KNOW WHAT FUEL YOUR LANTERN USES. As different fuels burn at different temperatures, yu culd easily melt r clg yur lantern with residue leading t a highly dangerus situatin. Fr gas canister lanterns, stick with prpane r butane as these fuels als burn at different temperatures. Clman has nw intrduced Pwermax which is a hybrid fuel made frm bth Prpane and Butane fuel. Check yur lantern t see if can use Pwermax.
