4 During Rangerfest all boys will be going through Royal Ranger Recruit Training in preparation for an upcoming battle. As with all military training the recruits will have to pass the Rifle Range, the Artillery Range, the Mortar Range, the Demolitions Range, the Radio Range, Physical Fitness Test, and the Obstacle Course. There are also several stations that will test boys, young and old, to lead a team under pressure. The pinnacle of their training will be the Royal Ranger Tank Battle on Saturday afternoon! The Royal Ranger Tank Battle! Your mission is to build a tank! A typical tank battle is dirty and fast paced and this battle will be no different. Moblity is key in armored warfare! Your tank will need to be pushed, by four to five boys all while being able to put out maximum accurate firepower on the enemy. This project will test your teamwork, creativity and engineering skills. The battlefield terrain of the day could range from grass to dirt to sand to mud. On Saturday afternoon your outpost will get the chance to shine and show off their skills, both creative skills and tank battling skills. Rules 1. Your tank can be made of any material you choose but it has to be boy powered. No gas or electric motors or engines may be used. Battery powered lighting is fine. 2. Each tank will have at least four boys total that must be within the interior of the tank. If you have less than four boys don t worry, we can fill in boys from other outposts or a lower age group. 3. If you have more than four boys they may be substituted only at the Ammo Supply Point (ASP). 4. Minimum exterior dimensions 30 wide, 36 long, 20 tall (sitting on the ground, not including antenna). 5. Maximum exterior dimensions 60 wide, 96 long, 48 tall (sitting on the ground, not including antennas). 6. Tanks must move along the ground with wheels or tracks. It must have a minimum of one axle. They cannot be fully carried! 7. Each boy must be within the structure of the tank. Arms may protrude beyond the exterior of the tank. Feet can touch the ground but must be within the walls of the tank. 8. The primary weapon of the battle will be hand thrown water balloons. 9. Must be marked with your District, Division, and your outpost number. THE BATTLE 1. There will be one battle per age group. 1 Discovery battle. 1 Adventure battle. 1 Expedition battle. 1 Commanders battle. 2. Each tank will be judged on appearance before the battle as well as performance during the battle. 3. Boys may not re-race unless they are filling in for another outpost or another age group. 4. You may only go to the ASP when you are out of ammunition. 5. Contact between tanks will result in the disqualification of the offending tank. If you have questions about rules jwp0369@gmail.com Campsite Evaluations: Other Outpost Level Events
5 In an effort to promote safe, efficient and positive camping practices we are going to be conducting campsite evaluations during Rangerfest. Staff members will be coming around to each campsite to evaluate how well each outpost is doing in setting up camp by the Ranger guidelines. While this is not intended to be a competition, a level of compliance will be awarded to each outpost based on how well their campsite is organized, set up for safety and functionality. The categories awarded will be: Gold, Silver and Bronze! Each outpost is encouraged to strive for the Gold Standard Evaluation as a matter of Ranger Pride! A copy of the Campsite/Campcraft Inspection sheet used by the staff is included in this packet to help the local outpost prepare and know what will be looked for. Let s make it a goal to have 100% of our campsites Gold Standard. Summary of Events Individual Events Rifle range, Physical Fitness Test Joint Patrol Events Mortar Range, Artillery Range, Demolitions Range, Radio Course, Obstacle Course, Leadership Reaction Courses. Outpost Level Events Tank Battle, Surprise Event. Commanders Have your boys look up some clean marching cadences. They will need them for Rangerfest! Things You Need To Know: 1. Senior Patrol Leader Every outpost needs to have one Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), regardless of his age. If all your outpost has is Discovery Rangers, then he will learn a ton and have a great opportunity to see leadership as portrayed by the older boys. It is our job as Royal Ranger leaders to mentor a boy
6 and encourage him to lead. We will continue to challenge the SPL for each outpost and will contiunue to expect great things from him, because we know he is capable of great things in Christ! 2. Joint Patrols- Since 2015 we have been combining outposts to form Joint Patrols. Each Joint Patrol may have multiple Senior Patrol Leaders, and that is OK. If there are two SPL s in a patrol, they are expected to work seamlessly together to accomplish their mission. 3. Volunteering to Help Run Events - We will always need commanders to help run events. During the opening rally we will meet and anyone able to help with an event will receive an information packet about that event so that he can immediately begin to see what that event entails. Remember that this is our Rangerfest and it is only what we make it. We will always strive to design an action packed, functional schedule of events but without men stepping up to help us out we simply cannot run the events. If you want to help with something specific jwp0369@gmail.com. 4. Footwear Flip-flops should not be worn during the events. Tennis shoes or boots are fine. Some form of water shoe may be nice to have in case of mud, although we fully expect Rangerfest 2018 to be 72 degrees and sunny all weekend! 5. Firearms Safety We will have firing ranges for each age group. We understand that every boy won t have his firearms safety card but please review basic safety rules with them prior to Rangerfest. 6. What skills do my boys need to know? Each boy may be tested at some point during Rangerfest over the following: a. Royal Ranger knowledge Current National Commander, First National Commander, the years that Royal Rangers and FCF were founded, Royal Ranger pledge, code, emblem and the Golden Rule. b. Compass skills Each boy should be able to use either a lensatic or Silvia style compass and follow a heading. They will NOT need to know their pace count. See Discovery Compass merit for further information. c. Lashing skills Each boy should have a working knowledge of basic lashing skills. See Discovery Lashing merit for further information. d. Knots Each boy may be tested on their ability to tie the following: Square knot, Figure Eight knot, Sheetbend, Clove hitch, Two half hitches, Taut line hitch, and Bowline. See Discovery Ropecraft and Adventure Camping merits for further information. Royal Rangers Indiana District Rangerfest ADULT & STAFF Registration Form
