3 Unit Preparation for Camporee If your unit follows the steps listed below, the process of preparing everyone for an enjoyable experience at the Dan Boone Camporee should go smoothly. Upon Receiving the Leaders Guide: Inform or remind all Scouts and parents of the Camporee Dates, March 15-17, Recruit two or more trained adult leaders to spend the weekend with your unit. Submit payment & roster to ensure your troop gets registered properly. Registration form and instructions are at the end of this guide. Recruit two, or more, older Scouts and/or Adults to run your Unit s assigned competition station(s). Finalizing plans for the outing: Give final notice to all boys and parents about plans for attending camp. Arrange for your transportation to and from camporee. Ensure all your Scouts families have the information on the weekend. Two weeks before Camporee: Review Schedule with your Scouts and families. Confirm your Patrols/Teams. (Patrols of 6-8 Scouts are preferable) Prepare the unit/patrol equipment to bring to the camporee. Review Patrol competition stations; encourage Patrols to practice Scout skills & teamwork. Finalize Transportation arrangements to and from camp. PLEASE try to limit the number of vehicles as our parking space is limited, and we wish to minimize our impact on the field.

4 The Camporee Policies and Procedures: Anyone participating in this event will be expected to follow BSA National Guidelines as outlined in the Guide to Safe Scouting. The Law is the Rule: Everyone is expected to abide by the Boy Scout Oath, Law, and Slogan. Check-in: Unit Leader or designee, and SPL or designee, must check-in upon arrival at the Admin Tent, located in the Upper Field. Wristbands will be provided for each adult and Scout, and must be worn at all times. Visitors to the Camporee will also be provided a wrist band upon checking in at the Admin Tent or Camporee HQ (Tabernacle). Buddy System: Everyone will use the Buddy System. Pairs for Safety. Adults/ Leaders should be notified before Scouts leave their campsites. Camp Security: All visitors to the camp must stop at the Camporee HQ or Admin Tent (Upper Field) and sign in. A sign-in book for this will be maintained and positive identification is required. Upon conclusion of their visit, guest will sign out so that camp administration will know who is on camp property at all times. Alcoholic Beverages: This will not be tolerated and is against BSA policy. Possession or use will result in immediate dismissal from camp. Smoking: BSA guidelines require a smoke-free environment for our scouts. If you must smoke, please do so out of sight of youth participants and not inside any buildings. Please field dress your butts and dispose of them properly remembering the ever present danger of forest fires. Vehicles / Trailers: A parking lot will be established across the entrance road on the West side. All vehicles must park in the West Field parking lot. Trailers will be allowed in campsites. However, vehicles used to pull trailers need to be moved back to designated parking lots. Small generators will be allowed only for medical devices (ie. a CPAP machine). Camp: Follow BSA guidelines for camping. Walk, do not run, within your campsite. Remember tent stakes and guy-lines are tripping hazards. Closed toed shoes must be worn at all times. Do not ditch or trench your tent. Leave no Trace. Trash your trash. It should be removed from all campsites, or placed in posted trash cans. No pets or bikes. Fishing in the pond is open during free time. Catch & release only.

5 Troop Flags: Please bring your Troop flag. They will be used for the opening and closing ceremony. Uniforms: Field uniform also known as a Class A uniform should be worn at opening ceremony Friday evening, closing ceremony Saturday evening, and Sunday vesper service. Activity uniform also known as a Class B (Scouting appropriate) t-shirts are permitted during all other event activities. Stoves and Lanterns: Follow BSA regulations according to fuels. Keep open flames out of and away from tents. Campfires: Bring an above-ground fire pit if you want to have a fire at your Troop site NO GROUND FIRES, except in the central, marked fire ring in the Upper Field. Do not cut trees. Bring your own firewood, charcoal or collect dead wood from the downed trees around the Upper Field. Never leave a campfire unattended, especially when going to bed. All campfires should be extinguished according to BSA guidelines. Please make sure before leaving on Sunday that your campsite is completely cleaned up and all campfires are completely extinguished. Knives, Hatchets, Axes, Chainsaws or Firearms: No firearms are permitted at Camp. No chainsaws are permitted. BSA National recommends no fixed-blade knives for large-group Scouting activities. Folding or pocket knives are permitted by those Scouts that have earned their Whittlin Chip or Totin Chip. Axes and Bow Saws are only permitted in axe yards of Boy Scout Troops / Venture Crews. Rocks and Sticks: Although tempting, rocks must not be thrown or kicked and sticks may not be swung. Injury/damage to property usually results from this action. Such actions will result in your being asked to leave the campout immediately. First Aid: First Aid instructions will be given at the opening ceremony. Minor first aid should be handled at the campsite if you have supplies. All injuries must be reported to the Camporee headquarters. Trash: Temporary trash cans will be available in the troop campsite area. A dumpster is available at the edge of the gravel parking lot by the Dining Hall, past the Tabernacle. Cleanup: When your unit is ready to leave camp we ask that you please clean up your area and leave it the same or better than you found it. Please take everything with you. Trash can be dropped in the dumpster before you leave camp. Camp Emergencies: With the exception of the weather emergency, all campers are to report immediately to their campsites upon hearing an emergency signal. In the case of a weather emergency, campers should seek protective shelter. Once the weather emergency has passed, campers should report to their campsites. Campers should remain in the campsites until the All Clear signal has been given. Leader should review these procedures with their campers. The following emergency signals will be used: Fire Alarm: Sound the siren (two long blasts). Weather Emergency: Sound the siren (one long blast). All Clear: Sound the siren (four long blasts).

6 Competition Stations Saturday 8:30-11:30am & 1:30-4:30pm Each Patrol will have the option to participate in as many stations as they wish. Patrols will be given an order of rotation for their stations, HOWEVER, they may choose to skip ahead if there are other patrols waiting at a station, and try the station later. They should anticipate some wait times. Flagpole Race A timed event. Patrols will lash (5) scout staffs together, end to end with (2) Round lashings at each joint to make an approximate 20 flagpole with a patrol flag (or neckerchief) tied to the top. The flagpole is then raised with (3) guy lines tied at approximately the fourth pole using a clove hitch. Patrols will drive (3) stakes to which the guy lines will be tied off to using a Taut-line hitch. Time ends when all patrol members are standing at attention saluting their flag. Materials may be provided but it is suggested to use your own as this event should be practiced! Emergency Fire Building/String Burn Patrols will build a fire large enough to burn through a string tied at a set height. Patrols will earn points for speed and teamwork. Matches and lighters may be used, bonus points will be awarded for using a single match or no-match/lighter (ferro rod, flint & steel, bow drill, steel wool & battery, etc). Fire source will NOT be provided; a brief amount of time will be given for Patrol to collect tinder & fuel in the immediate area. Water Rescue Toss Patrols will use ropes to rescue a victim in a pond. Patrols will earn points for accuracy and teamwork. Practice tosses will be offered for each patrol member. Rescue devices/ropes will be provided. Bear Bag Relay Patrols will throw a coiled rope over a high branch (or spar) which they will attach a bear bag ( a log) using a timber hitch. The bag is hoisted to the bar and let down, bag detached and rope coiled for next patrol member. Time ends when all patrol members have completed. Cooking Race- A timed event. Patrols will build a fire hot enough to cook a pancake, run down and flip it over a suspended string and return to their JASM (or registered adult leader) to eat. Time ends when the pancake is consumed. First Aid Rescue Patrols will put their basic first aid, rescue and teamwork skills to work as they come upon accident scene. Patrols will earn points for effectiveness and teamwork. Materials will be provided. Orienteering Patrols will put their basic compass and teamwork skills to work as they navigate a short compass course. Patrols will earn points for accuracy and teamwork. Patrols will need to bring 1 compass for every 2 Scouts. Low Ropes Team Stations Patrols will put their communication and teamwork skills to work as they navigate a series of low ropes stations. Patrols will earn points for teamwork and effectiveness in completing the station. Scout Spirit SCOUT SPIRIT will be evaluated. Poor scout spirit such as arguing and bickering during patrol challenges will be given penalty points. Exceptional scout spirit and Patrol Method will be given bonus points. BONUS Stations 12:30 1:30 PM, and 4:00 6:00 PM there will be several bonus stations. parade field Tomahawk Throwing possible

7 Fee Schedule/Registration: Fee Schedule: All fees should be paid based on the following information: Registration is $5.00 for each Scout, and $5.00 for each adult. This covers participant patches, port-a-potties, competition awards, program supplies, and facility fees. Refunds: A refund will be made to an individual or group that cancels program attendance/registration, as long as a written request is made at least 15 days prior to a district program/activity. No refunds will be given to an individual or group that cancels program attendance/registration within 15 days of the scheduled district program/activity. Exceptions for medical situations or family emergencies can be made, but must be submitted in writing within 7 days after the program/activity. Fees are transferable to other scouts but not refundable. All requests for refunds must be submitted in writing with a copy of the receipt or cancelled check.
