CHAPTER CHIEF & ADVISOR CAMPOREE COMMITTEE The plans for the 2004 Fall Camporee have been made. The Camporee committee s goal is to provide the needed requirements to earn the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge while providing a fun/learning environment for those scouts who already have the merit badge. To assist you in your planning here are the details. We suggest you bring this letter to the Camporee for further reference. All Scouts & Scouters are encouraged to come prepared to be active participants. Enclosed are 4 flyers highlighting special events at this year s Camporee WHO: All Scouts, Second Year Webelos, Scouters & Guests WHEN: September 24-26, 2004 (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) WHERE: Menoken Grove, Menoken, ND Exit 170 approximately 9 mile east of Bismarck see attached map REGISTRATION: Upon arrival, all unit leaders are to check in, complete registration and receive their assigned campsite. The registration table will be open until 8:00 pm CDT Friday evening. If late arrival is anticipated, please indicate this on the pre-registration form. The fee for the 2004 Fall Camporee will be $15.00 per person. Troops will receive a $2.00 per person discount if you pre-register by September 17, See attached pre-registration form for details and discounts. Should your unit have a situation or a Scout that requires special consideration, please indicate this on the pre-registration form.

2 TOUR PERMITS: Required if your unit travels over 25 miles to attend. We are to look like Scouts and Scouters. Scout or Troop T-shirts may be worn at all other times. See attached schedule of events. All activities are planned for outdoors and will include a tour of historic Second year Webelos must be associated with and hosted by a Troop. Each Scout/Scouter should bring a pair of work gloves & clothes. Each troop should bring the appropriate number of spade/shovels, rakes & bow saws. Suggest owners names be placed on tools for easy identification. There are no resources on site for materials for gateways or other things so troops will have to bring there own. Also, there are no tables or chairs on site. Troops will needed to bring their own if they require them. Water is available, but will need to be carried in containers to your campsite. Water is from the Burleigh County Rural water system. Water spigot is located southeast of the stage area. Open fires will be allowed in above ground enclosed containers or constructed fire pits. Most sites have existing fire pits. All cooking should be done over charcoal, white gas or propane stoves. Follow the National BSA policy on liquid fuel. There will be portable toilets available on site. Bring your own toilet paper. A first aid station will be available. The local medical & law enforcement facilities will be alerted as to our event. Each Troop should also bring there own first aid equipment. They are not permitted at any Scout function for any age. They are not allowed. Please leave them at home. They are not allowed. 3 TROOP SITES: PARKING: LOW IMPACT CAMPING: MENU PLANNING: OPENING CEREMONY: SATURDAY NIGHT CAMPFIRE CHAPEL SERVICE: SPECIAL NOTICE: DIRECTIONS: QUESTIONS: Will be assigned in advance to each unit based on the number of participating patrols and individuals. Should your unit have a situation that requires special consideration in site assignment, it should be so indicated on the preregistration form. All sites will be judged in accordance with the attached form. Additionally, an award will be given for the best campsite gadget. Your troop trailer will be allowed in your troop site. The vehicle pulling the trailer must unload and be driven to the assigned parking area. Vehicle traffic is restricted. Plan on having each scout carry their personal gear from the assigned parking areas to your site. Troop trailers will need to be removed from the campsite by 11:00 am CDT on Sunday. This is public use area that we are using and it shall be respected. All waste products from cooking and cleanup activities are to be properly disposed. Please pack your trash home, garbage disposal is limited. Campsites must be inspected and approved prior to departure by a Camporee Committee member. Plan & bring ample food for the weekend. Use attached duty roster Bring your troop and patrol flags. Do not forget your flag stands. We encourage other troops to volunteer for the honor to perform the Saturday lowering and Sunday flag rising. Please speak to the Camporee Chairpersons about this right away if you are interested. A program will be presented, including a skit or song from each Troop attending, so get them prepared. A lashing contest will also be conducted See enclosed flyer A non denominational church service will be held at the camp on Sunday morning. See Schedule. No one is allowed outside the established camping area after dark unless attending an organized event. Anyone who is found outside of the camping area without authorization will be sent home. Take the appropriate off ramp at Exit 170 on I-94. Go North to 30 Ave NE, proceed east to 171 St. NE, approximately ½ mile north on 171 St NE. 8 WILDERNESS SURVIVAL MERIT BADGE To: Scout Leaders & Scouts Attending 2004 Fall Camporee Scouts wishing to complete requirements to earn the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge will be able to do so at the 2004 Fall Camporee. Stations will be set up to complete most of the requirements for the merit badge and will be manned by capable Eagle Scouts & Adult Leaders. A Wilderness Survival Merit Badge Counselor will meet with the Scouts at 8:45 to begin the day and again at 4:30 at the end of the day to review, making sure each scout has completed the requirements. There are several things you will need to do prior to the Camporee in order to complete all the requirements and earn the Merit badge. They are as follows: 1. Make a personal Survival kit and bring it to the Camporee. Be able to explain how each item in it is useful. (Use the Wilderness Survival Merit badge book or other resources to help you. There are some good websites on the internet or books at your local library with lots of information on Wilderness Survival.) 2. If you wish to complete the merit badge at the Camporee you will also need to build a shelter and spend the night in it. Due to limited resources at the Camporee site you will need to bring the items with you to build your shelter, for example, branches /poles for the framework of your shelter and anything else you need to make it. This requirement can also be completed on one of you own troops campouts at a later date if you do not want to complete the merit badge at the Camporee. 3. There will be a counselor at the Camporee to work with the scouts. He will have a meeting at 8:45 Saturday morning to discuss how the merit badge requirements will be completed during the day and another meeting at 4:30 to review the requirements with the scouts.

9 FIRST ANNUAL CAMPING DESSERT POTLUCK & CONTEST!! Be sure your troop is prepared to participate in the first annual Camporee Camping Dessert Potluck and Contest! Here's all you need to do: 1. What's your troop's favorite camping dessert--brownies? Apple pie? Dutch oven cobbler? Something nobody else ever heard of? Pick out your very favorite camping dessert, bring everything you need to prepare it, and be sure to bring 15 copies of the recipe. 2. Saturday evening, as you prepare supper, prepare the dessert, too, making enough to feed all your campers plus five more servings. 3. DO NOT EAT THE DESSERT!!! 4. When your troop is done with supper and cleanup, bring your dessert and the recipes to the campfire/stage area. Also, everybody bring a plate or a bowl, and a fork or a spoon. 5. As soon as the contest judges have had a chance to taste the desserts, everyone will be welcome to try a dessert at the potluck! 6. Don't eat your own; try someone else's! It's an adventure! If you'd like to add a new dessert to your troop's menu, take a copy of the recipe. 7. Unbelievable prizes will be awarded! Maybe even a good one! BE PREPARED to win a prize AND enjoy a delicious dessert. Bon appétit!

10 Fall Camporee Lashing Contest! Let s have some fun with lashing skills!!! Building on the skills learned at the Camporee, a lashing contest will be held at the beginning of the campfire. Requirements: Each troop needs a team of 5 scouts. You may have more than 1 team, but each team must have 5 scouts. If your troop comes to the Camporee with less than 5 scouts, recruit from another troop. Each team will be required to make a tripod as fast as possible in order for each person on the team to be completely off the ground. The tripod must be strong and big enough to hold 5 scouts. Building the tripod will be timed. Time will begin on a signal and end when the team is successfully off of the ground. The troop with the fastest speed will win a prize. The contest will be run in heats. The number of heats will be determined by the number of teams and the space available on the stage. The fastest overall time will win, provided the tripod supports all 5 scouts. Materials: Supplied by Camporee staff. Prize: A good one that can be used by the troop. Tripod Example

11 Troop/Scout Swap Meet This year the Fall Camporee Committee will be offering troops and scouts an opportunity to buy/sell/trade troop equipment or individual scout items that are no longer needed, but are still useable. An area will be dedicated, much like a rummage sale, for troops or individual scouts or scouters to buy/sell/trade items. Rules: 1. All items must be marked with Troop #, Item # and price. If a scout or scouter wishes to place an item in the swamp meet, the item must have a Troop # and Item # clearly marked on the item. Example: Troop 89, Item 1 $2.00. The item number will be used by the troop to keep track of the items submitted for sale and for the Camporee committee to keep track of the purchase. Make sure you keep of list of all items placed in the swap meet. 2. The Camporee committee will not negotiate any prices. If a price is negotiable the potential buyer will need to contact the troop that listed the item. 3. The Camporee Committee will collect all money and keep track of items sold. All proceeds of the sale will be provided to each troop by the Saturday evening meal. 4.
