1 Leader s Guide October 13-15, 2017 Fort Lupton Rendezvous Area, Fort Lupton, Colorado Our staff has developed an exciting, competitive and outstanding Camporee with a Campfire program! The theme of our Fall Camporee is Mountain Man Rendezvous and Saturday s events are designed to build upon one another. We anticipate a fun-filled, exciting, challenging and safe camp-o-ree. Please read this leader s guide in its entirety and be familiar with it before you arrive at Camp. It contains important information that will prepare your leaders and scouts for the Camp-o-ree, as well as enable everyone to have a successful weekend. The Camp-o-ree will follow the rules of the Guide to Safe Scouting. At least one unit leader must have completed IOLS, and all adult Scouters MUST be Youth Protection trained. All adults should know and follow the guidelines found in the Guide to Safe Scouting and all scouts must follow the Buddy System. The Camp-o-ree is open to all registered Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Ventures, Sea Scouts and their leaders. Units are strongly encouraged to invite Webelos to join your unit for the weekend as a recruiting event. This camporee is meant to be an activity for older Scouts and not intended for Cub Scouts; therefore, Packs within our district are strongly encouraged to attend council Cub Events. These events have activities designed specifically for the Cub Scout Program. Once again we are setting up a Facebook page to keep track of pictures. The group name is 2017 Rocky Mountain District Camporee. Watch for an invite, as it is a closed group on Facebook. Camping Director: Brandy Womack rmcamporees@gmail.com
2 Registration Procedures Registration for the weekend is $20.00 per Scout and $15.00 per adult. A camp-o-ree patch and use of facilities are included in the registration fee. Registration and payment for the Camporee will be accepted at the event. After completing your unit s registration, print out two copies of the completed form. Submit one copy with your registration and retain a copy for your records. Checks should be made out to: BSA, LPC. The Camporee Theme: Mountain Man Rendezvous. There is no requirement to compete in the Dutch Oven Cook Off but the following cooking merit badge requirements CAN be completed during the event 5A, C, D, E, F if chose to do so. Medical Forms Units should bring a current Annual health and Medical Record (parts A & B) for each participant. The Camporee staff will NOT be checking them, only asking if the unit has the proper forms for each participant. Medical Forms will be kept within easy access by the unit leader in the campsite. If an injury takes place and there is a need to transport the individual to the nearest emergency facility, you will need the forms when you reach admissions. Outdoor Ethics: The Boy Scouts of America has introduced people to conservation, environmental awareness and love for the out of doors more than any other organization in the world. Leave No Trace, a program adopted by the National Forest and National Park Services was originally developed by the Boy Scouts of America. The Leave No Trace principles include: Plan Ahead and Prepare, Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces, Dispose of Waste Properly, Leave What You Find, Minimize Campfire Impacts, Respect Wildlife and Be Considerate of Other Visitors in terms of noise, litter and visual impact. Take only pictures, leave only footprints, is one way of summarizing it. Others have suggested we should avoid leaving footprints, too! Keep this in mind when planning and at the camporee. How can you lessen your impacts? Rules 1. Campfires: ABSOLUTELY NO UNATTENDED FIRES in the campsites. We will be following the Be Careful with Fire principle of Leave No Trace. Units are allowed to have campfires within the designated fire rings within their campsites. Appropriate fire rings MUST be used and creating other/new fire rings within the camp and campsites is prohibited. Keep all fires to a reasonable size/ never leave a fire unattended and always provide adult supervision for all fires. Propane stoves, lanterns and Dutch oven tables are permitted. All areas where there are open flames must have ash can, and one shovel. No flames in tents. Do not cut down live trees, use dead, down, dry, detached, and dinky wood, if available. If in doubt, please check for area s regulations on campfires. Fort Lupton does not have fire rings; therefore, each Troops will need to bring an above ground fire barrel. 2. Water: Water is available at camp. Units will not need to provide their own water. Remember to carry a water bottle during all activities and bring a water jug to fill for campsite water. 3. Special Unit Equipment: Units are required to ensure that they bring enough cookware and eating utensils for their unit s participation. Units must use the provided fire rings for cooking their 2
3 meals in; this is to prevent scorching the ground (Leave No Trace). Dutch oven or charcoal cooking stands/tables are allowed. The following list of items is what each troop will need to supply for their scouts: Rain Gear (Be prepared for rainy or snowy weather) Mesh Kits (No disposable available for cracker barrels or potlatch) Work gloves for Tug-of-War Staves/Stick + rope for lashings Tomahawks/Throwing knives 4. Shared Facilities: Camporee participants will be camping in designated campsites in close proximity to other units. There are some permanent facilities: picnic tables, fire ring, etc. Unless notified otherwise do not build any fires outside of the designated fire rings. 5. The Outhouses will be open or a couple of them will be available. These are shared facilities by everyone. There will be one designated for female use only. Please keep them clean and neat as if you would be the next person to sit down. Do not throw items other than human waste and toilet paper into the outhouses. 6. Vehicles: Vehicles will need to be backed into a parking spot in the designated parking areas. Unit trailers may remain in the campsites, but the towing vehicles must park in designated parking areas, no exceptions!! ATV s, golf carts, or other similar vehicles are not permitted at the camporee unless a medical condition requires the use of a vehicle. No vehicles are allowed to drive around camp on Saturday. 7. Weapons: in accordance with BSA policy, no personal firearms are permitted at the camporee. 8. Medical/First Aid: Please remember that Unit Leaders will be primarily responsible for first aid and medical care for their participants. If any medical care needs arise which requires something more than basic first aid, we will have medical personnel onsite at the Headquarters area. If any medical care needs arise that requires a visit to the hospital, unit leaders must notify and coordinate care with the Camporee HQ. Your Medic on Staff will be. 9. Uniforms: Field uniforms are to be worn during evening flag (lowering), Campfire, and Scouts Own Service. Activity uniforms are to be worn at all other times. 10. Pets: Absolutely no pets are allowed. Disability Service animals are permitted. 11. Trash: For last couple of years, we are trying to make Camporee Events Zero Waste. Therefore, Troops should provide their own trash receptacles. Troops must completely clean up and dispose of all cooking debris and trash before leaving camp and taking their trash with them when leaving. (Leave No Trace Principle 3) Charcoal only - may be cool to the touch and thrown in ash-trash receptacles, if available. 12. Rules Violations: The Camporee Chief in consultation with the Staff will determine penalties for any violation of the rules. 3
