2 2018 PAUL BUNYAN CAMPOREE Activity Program Order of the Arrow Karakona Chapter 19 and Crater District invites your unit to the 2018 Paul Bunyan Campout being held on January at Albright Scout Reservation. The staff has worked hard to present a quality weekend filled with activities to build scouting skills that will be set in a fun and exciting environment.. Please read this leaders guide carefully so your scouts will be able to take full advantage of this program. The following is a list of tentative activities: All Units to participate in a Paul Bunyan lookalike contest. This will be judged Saturday morning. Must dress appropriately and have all items needed for the weekend. All activities except the Scavenger Hunt will be timed and scored. Axe Yard Challenge Fire Building Challenge Heaving Bar Challenge Knot Tying Challenge Ox Pull Relay Race Scavenger Hunt Tomahawk Toss Competition Two Man Saw Competition Weblos Stations - The following are for Weblos only The following is tentative based on number of attendees, cub leaders and or parent volunteers. Archery Competition Javelin Throw Competition Relay Race Shooting BB's Competition Sling Shot Competition Tarp Game * NOTE: See Activity Requirements Scoutmasters are expected to submit a list of scouts attending by January 12, 2018 at 5:00pm. Lists should be ed to Rhonda Hannuksela at rhonda.hannuksela@bsvnet.com USE DOUBLE KNOT TO REGISTER The cost per person will be $10.00 (Youth/Adult). All Fees are payable when you arrive at Albright s, but pre-registration is required. Staff members do not register in advance and do not have to pay the fee and will be provided lunch at the food stand. PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL NAMES ARE ON YOUR RESERVATION. Roster of all participants MUST be turned in upon arrival. This also applies for guest(s). 2
3 Registration at Cahoon Center Leader only Parking The following parking procedures have been implemented for this event. We all want to have a safe event. Concerns about vehicle congestion and safety have necessitated these parking procedures: - All vehicles are required to park in the designated parking lot only. - Only one unit vehicle may enter the Camporee area at time Units will have one authorized trailer drop off. - Units may drop trailer at their campsite. - No vehicles will be allowed overnight in the campsite. - No vehicles are allowed in the campsite area. BSA Safety rule that must be followed. - Due to the hilly camping area, please insure the trailer wheels are securely chocked. - The main road through the Camporee area will be one-way. Exit the Camporee area on the far side and follow Crater Way to Exter Mill, then re-enter camp, via the Exter Mill Rd. gate. - All Vehicles must be in the parking area by dark Friday night. Late arrivals will be accommodated. - Handicap vehicles will be accommodated (See Below information in next section.) Troops and Crews may begin arriving between 5 pm and 9 pm on Friday, May 19th to set up campsites. All other vehicles MUST park in the parking lot and wait for leader to return. Please do not block the road to parking lot. Vehicles (one at a time a pass will be given for one vehicle) to drop off gear at camp site, then must return to the designated parking area. Give the pass to the next vehicle to drive to camp site. All vehicles MUST be parked in the parking lot at all times. See Handicapped Parking below. Handicapped Parking Requests for special parking passes for medical conditions MUST be made in advance and decisions will be made on a case by case basis. Every reasonable effort will be made to accommodate those with physical disabilities or special needs. NOTICE: Remember the road to Camp site is now one way. You must exit from the old Crater District Training Area. Return to the Parking Area using the exit gate. First Road on the right. Camping: Camping will be in the Large Camporee Field. Campsites will be assigned as registrations are received. Campers are responsible for the following: Water for drinking, washing, cooking & cleaning up All meals Trash removal from Albright s. Bring plenty of trash bags Campsite cleanup to include: firewood removal and fire barrels returned to location that they were found. Camp safety and adherence to BSA policy found in Guide to Safe Scouting Campfires: ALL CAMPFIRES MUST BE IN A FIREBARREL OR IN AN ABOVE GROUND FIRE STAND. NO CAMPFIRES ARE TO BE BUILT DIRECTLY ON THE GROUND There will be NO digging of fire pits. No cutting of living trees for fire wood is permitted. Use deadfall ONLY! All campfires will depend on local fire conditions, additional restrictions may be imposed. Firewood brought in from an outside source is recommended; however, on-site deadfall may be used. Campfires must be monitored at all time by adults. 3
4 First Aid: Each troop is expected to have a first aid kit for minor injuries. Health and Safety Guidelines for ALL Crater events at Albright Scout Reservation The usual prohibitions that apply for scouting activities are in effect for the campout: Requirements: Class A Uniform is NOT required for the campout. No troop will be allowed to remain at the Camporee without two-deep adult leadership at all times. Secure and store foods to prevent attracting our little furry friends. Possession or the consumption of alcoholic beverages on Scout property or during any Scout function is expressly forbidden. Scouts are NOT permitted to use liquid fuel stoves or liquid fuel lanterns. All fires must be completely extinguished before leaving camp leave no fire adult-unattended. Burn barrels will be provided. Please return the burn barrels to the place you picked them up. Cooking grease and oil must be removed from the campsite with the garbage pack it in - pack it out. All trash and garbage must be removed from the Council property. No littering on the Scout Reservation. No pets leave all pets at home. Service animals will be permitted, but must be approved at the registration desk. Radios and electronic devices are strongly discouraged. No Sheath knives allowed. This includes adults. No fire wood cutting. No firearms or fireworks allowed. Ponds and lakes are off limits for swimming!!! This is not a fishing event, for Boy Scouts. Tent trenching is not allowed Open flames in tents are prohibited. Leave all campsites in a better state than you found it leaders please perform a police call on your campsite area before leaving. The Buddy System should be strongly enforced at all times. 4

6 Directions: Directions from Scout Service Center (Richmond): Take Powhite Parkway (South) to Chippenham Parkway (South). Take the 1st Ironbridge Road Exit towards Chesterfield. Turn right onto Beach Road (Route 655). After about 1.1 miles, take a left onto Nash Road (Route 636). Follow Nash Road to Woodpecker and turn right, then shortly left, back onto Nash Road; follow Nash until it ends at River Road (Route 602, Route 36) about 7 miles. Turn left onto River Road. At the Radio Tower (.6 mile) take a right onto Trent s Bridge Road and turn left into Albright Scout Reservation (.5 mile) Directions from Skinquarter: Take Hull Street (Route 360) East to Beaver Bridge Road (Route 603). Turn right onto Beaver Bridge Road and drive 4.3 miles. The name changes to Winterpock Road for about.1 mile before you reach Black Road. Turn Right on Black Road (Route 621), until it ends (1 mile) at River Road. Turn left onto River Road (Route 602, Route 36) until you see the second Radio Tower (red and white on the Right Side of the Road miles). Ignore the first Radio Tower you see on the left side of the road at the Water Tower. Take a right at the second Radio Tower onto Trent s Bridge Road (Route 628) and turn left into Albright Scout Reservation (.5 mile). Directions from Petersburg: Take River Road (Route 36 West) until you reach the Radio Tower (about 9 to 10 miles). Turn left onto Trent s Bridge Road (Route 628) and turn left into Albright Scout Reservation (.5mile). Directions from west 460: I-85 to route 1 North, turn left at the light. Right at the next light (100 ft), go to stop sign on RT 36, and turn left to Albrights. 10 Activity Requirements Class A's are not needed for this campout Paul Bunyan lookalike contest- All patrol members need to be dressed for the weather. You will need the following: Patrol Flag on a staff You must use a wagon or a backpack to carry your items in. Webelos or Scout Handbook (1 per Patrol) Notebook and Pencil (1 per Patrol) Rain Gear (1 per Scout) Compass (1 per Patrol) First Aid Kit (1 per Patrol) Water 32oz (1 per Scout) Pair Leather Work Gloves (2 pair per Patrol) Safety Glasses or Goggles (2 per Patrol) Hand Sanitizer or Camp Soap (1 per Patrol) Small Shovel (1 per Patrol) Hot Spark or Flint and Steel (1 per Patrol) Waterproof Matches (1 Box per Patrol) Tinder & Kindling (no wax, paraffin or paper based starting material) Blanket (1 per Patrol) Tarp (1 per Patrol) 8 Foot Length of Rope (1 per Scout) Scout Axe (1 per Patrol) ******DRESS FOR THE WEATHER***** This means dress warm most likely it will be freezing cold. If you don't have water proof boots and are wearing tennis shoes make sure you have plastic bags to keep your feet dry. Wear wool socks etc. If you have any questions please call me. (804)
11 Activity Requirements Class A's are not needed for this campout!!!!!remember SAFETY FIRST!!!!! The Scouts participating in the Axe Yard Challenge and the Two Man Saw events must have leather work gloves and safety glasses/goggles. Axe Yard Challenge - This station will have two parts. Your patrol will split a large piece of wood and then will split it down to kindling. Fire Building Challenge - You will have to build a fire on your own with your material that you bring. You will need all items needed to start a fire to include fire starter, wood, lint etc. No Liquid Accelerant!!! You will be disqualified. Heaving Bar Challenge - You will need to lash a pole about 6-7 feet off the ground using your rope. Coil the rope (which will be approximately 25 feet long and will be provided) then throw the rope over the bar standing behind the peg. Tie a clove hitch to the peg on the ground. Tie a rope around the log with a timber hitch then you must use the sheepshank to suspend the log off the ground. *see attachment Knot Tying Challenge - You will start will all ropes on the ground. Time will start as soon as the first rope is touched. Tie the first rope to pole with clove hitch, the continue tying the following knots together until you have lifted the log off the ground. *see attachment... Please know knots needed are not all required knots but to earn all points available you will need to know how to tie them. 12 Activity Requirements Class A's are not needed for this campout Relay Race - You will need to build a human ladder and build for twenty feet, then build walking planks and walk the planks for twenty feet. You will also run a short distance to complete this race. Scavenger Hunt - As you go throughout your day be on the lookout for a sign of the 12 points of the scout law. As you see them at the appropriate time talk with the leader that may be near one of the points. This leader will give you one ticket for your entire Patrol to collect a wooden bead to represent that point of the scout law. At the end of the day you will turn the tickets in at the food stand to collect your beads and leather cord to complete a necklace to represent how you live the scout law throughout your daily life and to remember all the fun that you had at Paul Bunyan. Tomahawk Throw Competition - Each Patrol member will get to throw three times the better your throw the better your score. You will be scored on how many you get to stick. Two Man Saw Competition - You and members of your Patrol will need to saw a log with a two man saw. Ox Pull - You will need to tie a timber hitch and pull the log to the finish line. You may also participate in the Scavenger Hunt, Relay Race and the Tarp Game. Archery Competition - Each Patrol member will get three shots. Bring your best aim. You will be aiming for a bulls eye. Javelin Throw - Each Patrol member will get three throws. Bring your throwing arm. The furthest throw wins. Shooting BB's Competition - Each Patrol member will get three shots. You will be aiming for the inside circles and the bulls eye. Sling Shot Competition - Each Patrol member will get three shots. Your want to hit the bulls eye. 15
