4 General Instructions Message A camporee is a gathering of many scout troops. It brings troops within the district together to participate in events that they could not do individually. It also provides the opportunity to display your expertise or to check-out the competition. It is a great way to fellowship with other troops and to learn from other scouts. A camporee recognizes that a patrol is the basic (camping) unit. Therefore, we encourage troops make use of the patrol method. A camporee has events specifically designed for patrols to test their teamwork and scout skills. The theme for this year s camporee is Scout vs. Wild Troop Registration Troops may register for the Camporee online at A link should be available in the Konza District sections of the website. Payment with a credit card, debit card, or Electronic Check is required for online registration. Cost for the Camporee will be $10.00 there will be a $5.00 late fee after the deadline The deadline to register online is September 30, Each registered scout and adult will receive a 2013 Camporee Patch. Check-In and Check-Out Procedures Check-in will begin at 5:00 PM on Friday evening. Troops are asked to check-in no later than 9:00 PM. Please have a roster of scouts and adults that are attending. Ensure Tour Plan is submitted. Please follow the posted signs. Parking will be available in a designated area at the camp site. All vehicles/trailers will be parked on a durable surface not on the grass. Checkout will begin at 9:30 A.M. Sunday. Camporee patches are distributed at checkout. Medical Forms and Assistance Each Troop should have up to date medical forms for each Scout and Adult Leader in attendance. Forms will not be collected by the Camporee staff, but should be available in the case of a medical emergency. EMS trained personnel will be on duty. Saturday Evening Campfire Substitute There will be no district wide campfire; instead there will be an inter-troop activity. This can be accomplished by manner methods it s your choosing. First select another Troop from outside your normal association and plan an activity for the evening campfire; share a cobbler, sing songs, roast marshmallows or just set around the campfire getting to know each other.. The idea behind this event is for our scouts to venture outside their normal box and meet new friends and see different methods of doing the same things inside the district. Please stop by Camp HQ and sign the sheet when you select your partner troop. Religious Services A camp wide religious service will be offered on Sunday morning at 9:00 AM on the shore line. The service will be organized and ran by the Chaplain s Aides from participating troops. Chaplain s Aides will be asked to come to a preparation and planning meeting on Friday evening at 9:15 P.M. 4

5 Meals Troops will be required to provide their own meals for the weekend. Saturday noon meal will be a trail type meal, preferably something that can be made with hot water. No food will be provided by the Camporee staff. The Camporee will NOT have a trading post. Fires in Camp All fires must be above ground fires ; or in approved fire ring at the park. Troops should have fire barrels or some other device to contain their wood fires. For your safety, please abide by the following rules: 1. Fires may be built only in burn barrels within the campsites and must be attended at all times while burning. 2. When striking camp, properly dispose of ashes and burned wood. Likewise, surplus, unburned wood can be placed in nearby tree line away from the open area. 3. Liquid fuels are not to be used to start wood fires. 4. Charcoal is permitted for use in cooking fires. The use of starting fuel to ignite charcoal is prohibited except under strict adult supervision. 5. Stoves and lanterns using alternate fuels such as white gas, kerosene or propane are permitted only under adult supervision. 6. Stoves and lanterns using alternate fuels will not be operated inside of tents or other enclosed areas. 7. Fires and lighted stoves or lanterns will not be left unattended in the campsite. 8. All fire lays will be properly and safely prepared by insuring that all burnable material is cleared from the area within a 5-feet radius of the edge of a fire barrel. Tree Cutting 1. Tree cutting on the property is prohibited. 2. Use wood that is brought in or deadfall for wood that has been gathered to burn. Water Water will be available on site. 7 Boy Scout Camporee Event Instructions Each troop and/or patrols are expected to participate in all events. Each patrol will be issued an Event Card listing their order of events. Each troop/patrol is expected to bring a backpack with the following items: Compass GPS Patrol First Aid Kit Scout Handbook and Field Book Six (7) Pieces of 8 to 10 rope Tarp small Sighting/Signaling Mirror Sleeping bag Insect repellant Toilet paper Whistle Each Scout will carry with him the scout essentials minus matches or lighter BSA Approved Pocket Knife per scout Personal First Aid Kit Flashlight Sun protection- Larger bottle in patrol pack is authorized Alternate Food for lunch out on the course (Hot Water will be available at each station) Primitive Fire starter per scout it s their choice which method they choose Personal Water bottle, canteen, hydration pack, Refill available at stations Rain gear Optional clothing gear at scouts discretion Compass, Map of area will be provided Troops/Patrols/Scouts will bring all of these materials with them to the flag assembly Saturday morning. WEBELOS will be doing the same events as the Boy Scouts, exception- The WEBELOS Den leader will accompany the WEBELOS Den around the course to ensure their safety and assist as needed. 7

8 Field Events Stations: 1. Shelter building (Do you know what it takes to survive in the cold, wet windy environment without your 4 season tent) As a patrol you will need to construct a debris shelter to protect yourselves from the environment. 2. Primitive Fire Building (No lighters or matches allowed the sun is setting fast and you have 30 minutes to get a fire going to keep you warm and safe from predators) Each member of the patrol must build their own fire within the allotted time 3. Trapping/Snares (Can you get needed proteins without the use of a firearm) Set up a snare or deadfall trap that can help you get the meat you need to survive. 4. First Aid (What can happen to you in the wild and you still survive) You will need to perform same lifesaving and basic first aid to a member of your patrol that has fallen down a cliff. Then safely move him to a site to get him medical help. 5. Knots (Same old drill, but in a practical mode-make it to survive not just show me a knot) The following knots need to be tied, in the correct order as follows: clove hitch,bowline, two half hitches, square knot, sheep shank *, sheet bend, timber hitch, slip knot *, fisherman's knot *, taut line hitch Starting with all the ropes on the ground, tie the knots and use the taut line to lift the log off the ground. Time begins when the first rope is touched and ends when the log is lifted from the ground and no scout is touching the ropes. * not basic scout knots, but necessary for passing this challenge 6. Primitive food foraging weapons (Have you ever caught a fish with a stick spear you made yourself) Choose your weapon and build a spear you can use to get your fish out of the water. 7. Signaling (what happens when the rescue plane flies over you, can you get the help you need) Using your mirror give the basic signals needed to get attention and communicate with your rescuers. 8

9 8. Tracking (Recognize what animal that you are trying to trap or snare- would be a shame to set a trap for a rabbit only to return the next day seeing you caught an angry grizzly bear) Given a set of tracks correctly identify the tracks you see, each member of the patrol will have to do their own tracking without assistance, all tracks will be native to the Kansas wildlife. 9. Quiz (Do you have the knowledge to survive) Take a quiz to test all your knowledge. Getting around will not be easy, you will need to know how to navigate by the following methods in order to complete the course, getting from location to location with vary. Survival Navigation with map (Can you find your way out of trouble if you have to and avoid obstacles or get around them and back on track). Orienteering techniques (See if you can shoot an azimuth and follow it to get somewhere). GPS navigation, enter your way point and follow the GPS to get to where you re going. 9
