3 Overview and Camporee Information Theme: The Amazing Race in Fort Wayne Location: Johnny Appleseed Park, 1500 Coliseum Blvd E, Fort Wayne, IN. Enter the park from Coliseum Blvd. Date and Arrival Time: Friday, April 24, :00 PM - 8:45 PM Participants: Camporee is open to all registered Boy Scouts, Venturers and their adult leaders. Webelos not camping with a troop are encouraged to visit Saturday late afternoon & evening. Registration Fee: Fees are $10 per person and in the council office on Thursday, April 23, Events: The main event for the Camporee will allow patrols to learn about Fort Wayne and have fun as they score points racing around to different locations downtown! NOTE: the Johnny Appleseed Hike sponsored by Pokagon Kekionga Trails Committee is also occurring on Saturday, but it is not part of to the Miami District Spring camporee. Saturday Evening Events: Cooking Competition - Bring your patrols best dinner & dessert recipes to prepare and share! Campfire Program and Awards! Order of the Arrow Callout! Uniforms: The uniform for Friday evening should be (at a minimum) the activity uniform (Class B). Hats, if worn, should be Scout related hats. Field (Class A ) uniforms are required for the Saturday activities on the trail, during campfire program and Sunday morning at Scouts Own Service. Parking: In designated parking areas only. No vehicles (other than trailers) can be left in campsites. Tents: Troops must furnish their own tents. Do not move any picnic tables in the park. Water: Potable water is available at the camp. Bring containers to transport to cooking area. Fires: All fires will be off the ground. Firewood and fire pits will not be provided. Meals: All units will make provisions for their own meals. Saturday lunch is on the trail, so plan accordingly. All patrols (youth and adult) are encouraged to participate in the cooking competition and to share and fellowship with other units as part of the cooking competition. Details below. Latrines: Portable latrines will be provided. Health/Safety/First Aid/Security: Minor first aid is unit responsibility. For any major first aid problems, contact 911 and any member of the camporee staff. Note that all liquid fuels must be handled in accordance with the Guide to Safe Scouting. Safety on the trail is the responsibility of the patrol leader. At least one camporee staffer will be at the campsite during the amazing race event time. Buglers: Any Scouts who can play taps, reveille, call to colors, etc. on their bugles are encouraged to bring their bugles and check in with the Camporee staff on Friday evening. 3

4 Scoutmaster and SPL Meeting: There will be an information meeting at 9:00PM on Friday evening for the Scoutmaster and Senior Patrol Leaders. Assigned patrol groups (times) for the race will be made available at this time. Any changes to the schedule of activities, camp-specific items, and other important information will be distributed at this meeting. Maps of downtown will be provided for each patrol. SPL are expected to pass down all information to their patrol leaders. SPL are expected to keep their unit to the camporee schedule. A cracker barrel will be provided for all campers after the SM/SPL meeting. Scoring for the Amazing Race: After Saturday morning flags, each patrol will be given a Mission Challenge packet, which will have a list of sites or activities to complete in the downtown area. Each site (or activity) will be listed with a point value used to determine the patrols total score. Each patrol will want to plan their strategy to obtain the most points in the allotted time. Also included will be the rules, and a score sheet that the patrol leader (or designee) will keep track of. Some events require patrols to answer a question, others might require a picture. Two or more adults are required to travel with each patrol are only there for safety/security reasons and to take pictures if asked. The Scout Oath and Law will be observed at all times. Points will be deducted for late returns (see the schedule) to the amazing race check-in area at the camp HQ. NOTE: access to downtown is via the River Greenway trail. Field uniforms will be worn. Unit Campsite Inspection: Campsite inspections will be scored as a unit event for Best Overall Unit. Each unit will be responsible for providing their own fire protection. Troops may share campsites; however, each should be clearly designated so judges can distinguish between different troops/campsites. Units may earn up to 10 extra points if exterior tent flaps are left open for inspection (screens may be zipped closed). Judges will not enter tents, but will look inside for neatness and hazards. Inspections will include youth and adult camping areas. Inspections will follow the attached criteria and will be conducted according to the schedule. Cooking Competition - Camporee Cook-off Best Main Dish Best Dessert Activity: Each patrol (youth and adult) will prepare and cook their best dish and bring it to camp HQ no later than 6:30PM for a potluck style event. Be sure to provide copies of your recipe to share! Scoring: The dishes (youth and adult) with the most votes will win the cook-off, which will be announced at the campfire. You cannot vote for your own dish. Campfire Skits and Songs: The Saturday evening campfire program will feature an opportunity to showcase your patrols best songs and skits. Each patrol is encouraged to put forth their best effort. Skits should be no longer than two minutes and must adhere to scouting principles (wholesome entertainment). Patrols need to register their skits and songs at check-in on Friday. Guitar s make a great addition to campfires if one has one and is willing to play it during the campfire. Scouts Own: Each troop will need to provide the name of the chaplain s aide at check-in on Friday for the meeting on Saturday night and at Scouts own on Sunday. The service is designed to allow units plenty of time for breakfast, breaking camp and attending their own religious services as needed. Note: All Camporee activities are subject to change, as necessary, due to inclement weather. 4
