Webelos Woods Leader Guide 2017 Basic Information for Troop and Pack Adults North Shore District Capital Area Council November 3-5, 2017 Revision 2.1
WELCOME TO WEBELOS WOODS 2017! Webelos Woods is hosted by North Shore District Venturers and District Committee. The theme is ESCAPE TO ADVENTURE, so prepare for a weekend packed with fun and adventure! Webelos Woods is the North Shore District s Fall Camporee. Camporee is the semi-annual gathering for all district Troops. Webelos Woods is designed to give first and second year Webelos and their adult partners and leaders a preview of the Boy Scout experience. This is a Boy Scout program that will: Show Boy Scout methods, skills, procedures, and values to the district s future Boy Scouts and Scouters. Demonstrate the difference between the Boy Scout boy-led program and the Cub Scout adult-lead program. Introduce Webelos to the wide variety of troops in the district. Give troops the opportunity to engage with each other and many future Boy Scouts and Scouters. Provide Webelos, adult partners, and leaders a fun camping experience to help foster a desire to continue in scouting. To all Cub adult partners and leaders: Please join Webelos Woods for the whole weekend or as much of it as you are able to attend. We want to see you here! 2 P age

Camp Rules: Follow the Guide to Safe Scouting and other BSA regulations. Field Uniform (Class A) is generally worn at all times that group activities are occurring (Friday & Sunday travel, Saturday campfire, and Sunday service). Wearing the uniform is always appropriate. Units may designate Activity Uniform (Class B) during station rotations and at other times. Arrival: Units will be welcomed at the gate and directed to the parking lot. Only one vehicle with the trailer is permitted in the camping area parked along the road, and must remain attached to the truck in the area until Sunday morning. No other vehicles are allowed in the camping area. The walk from the parking lot is less than 100 yards. This is in place for Scout safety. Do not drive off the designated roads. Speed Limit is 10 MPH. Check-in: Bring your roster, with confirmed headcount, contact name and number of person onsite. For Webelos Dens coming without a host troop, be sure to check-in at the registration desk, especially if you won't be camping. First Aid, Medical Forms, Medicine, and YPT: Units are responsible for handling their own medical forms, medicine, and first aid. Any injuries beyond the capability of the unit should be referred to camp staff. All injuries should be reported to camp staff. Current medical forms (Parts A&B) and Youth Protection Training (YPT) are required for all attendees P age
Meals: All participants are responsible for bringing their own meals. Usually people eat before they arrive on Friday, and troops cook three meals Saturday and breakfast Sunday. There is no district-provided meal. Utilities: Smilin V has potable water, but it is suggested that you bring full water containers. Campsites do not have electricity. Camp staff has access to electricity for emergencies. Do not expect mobile phone coverage. Restrooms: Smilin V has limited restroom facilities. Portable toilets are available. Trash: Pack out all your trash you when you leave. Departure: Check out as a unit. Campsite must be inspected prior to departure. Patches will be handed out after inspection. Leave no trace. Gear: Troops You should know what to bring. Please let your Webelos know your policies on tents, food, and any other items. Packs In general, you will need your own personal gear (sleeping bag, water bottle, clothes, and toiletries) and tent. Webelos should wear scout appropriate activity uniforms on Saturday. Contact the troop that will be hosting you for specific needs. If you do not have a host troop, contact those listed on page 2. 7 P age

Troop Hosted Stations Troops are asked to each create a station for Webelos to visit during their activity rotation time. These stations are designed to showcase troops and be a fun way to advertise troops to the Webelos. Below, we have come up with several stations from which you are free to pick, or think up your own. Please send your top 3 station choices to Kevin F. Clark kfclark1962@yahoo.com.please expect a confirmation with your final approved station before you start planning. Stations should each have a scoring system so that awards can be given out. These score cards should be designed by each troop and will be turned into the staff after all station rotations are finished. Additionally each station will have a puzzle piece to give to the patrol at the completion of the station. Combined, the puzzle pieces will reveal a secret to help them escape. There will also be an award for the best station overall, as judged by staff on things such as friendliness, scout spirit, execution, and how fun the station was for the Webelos. - Troop s Choice Think escape room meets scouting skills. What can you think of that has a puzzle or challenge behind it that could showcase a scout skill. - BB Guns - If your Troop has a certified Range Master, Smilin V now has BB Guns and we would love to offer that to our Webelos Guests. - Kubb Split up the patrol into two teams and have them have to knock down the pins in order to escape. - Obstacle Courses - Escape room themed ways to get through the challenge. OR a guided obstacle course with blindfold on participant with others coaching to escape to the other side. 9 P age
- Rockets: Water/or Compressed Air Give a time limit to create the rocket and get it launched before a catastrophe occurs. For water rockets, have a relay to fill the bottle with a spoon. - Tomahawks - Throw tomahawk at a string with a Key on it. If it drops the key you escape - River Crossing Think Frogger with inflatable alligators to cross a river to escape using a limited number of boards to get everyone across. - Human Knot escape from the human knot, participants stand in a circle, take the hand of someone across from them and then using team work see how fast they can get out of the knot. - Carve a Key - in soap to escape. Use plastic knives and Ivory Soap - Catapult/Trebuchet/Slingshot - at a window or door to escape must be manned by BSA approved slingshot leader (see guide to safe scouting) - Sharks & Minnows 2 or 3 sharks, all the minnows have to run from one end of the field to the other. If they are tagged they become sharks. - Dragon Tails split group in half hold onto their shoulders and last person has a rope tucked into their waist (like flag football) (Two conga lines trying to take the other s tail) - Fire building - Build a fire to burn a rope at a given height the fastest. - First Aid Bandage and transport a victim in a timed relay - Common Sense Quiz Can a man marry his widow s sister? If a plane crashes on an international border, where do they bury the survivors? - Geocache Course - to navigate to your escape. - Knot So Easy to Escape- Have participants tie and identify as series of knots to secure their escape. 10 P age
- Campfire Planner Troop We need one troop to be in charge of organizing the campfire. Each troop should plan on participating to show the Webelos how it is done. These are plans for the rest of the Webelos Woods, included for your reference. There will be a large game for all the Webelos after all the stations have finished. There are also several competitions and awards that will be presented. Intertroop Game: Eight-way capture the flag or similar large multi-player game. Troop Competitions: Cooking Competition: Best main dish or desert (Youth and Adult categories) Campsite Arrangement: Best Gateway: Best Camp Gadget: Campfire Program: Songs Skits Sparklers Stories Performed by the Troops Scouts Own Service: Hosted by Troop P age
