2 OVERVIEW Come join us for non-stop adventure, learning, and challenge! Troop and Crew participants will be on simulated treks all weekend. Youth led patrols will camp, eat, and work together as they would on a wilderness trek. They will participate in activities that promote and test skills related to canoe, bike, and backpack trekking. It is intended to be an immersive experience that will challenge the most skilled scouts while being appropriate for all. On arrival participants will leave their vehicles and form into 6-8 person patrols. They will make a portable patrol banner and store their food for Saturday s dinner at the block house. Participants will backpack camp all weekend carrying their gear, including food (breakfasts and lunches), and cooking in their patrols on backpacking stoves and wood fires. As a means of making the experience more authentic and promoting youth leadership, each Troop or Crew will bring only two adult leaders with them on the trek in accordance with Boy Scout or Venturing Crew Youth Protection. Other adults who wish to participate in the activities will form patrols of their own and do EVERYTHING the Scouts and Venturers do. Those adults that do not want to or can t participate in the trek will camp in a designated car camping area. All activities and meetings will be conducted outdoors. Campfire and OA Tap Out Adults may bring a chair to campfire on Saturday night Units should prepare a short, Scout-appropriate song, skit or activity. Participation is mandatory in order to be eligible for a Camporee Award. OA Tap Out this is a solemn portion of the campfire program and we ask that all units be silent and respectful during this time. Camporee Awards Cast Iron Chef awarded to the unit with the best overall meal Spirit Stick awarded to the unit that shows the most spirit during the entire camporee Paddle of Honor awarded to the unit with fastest time on the canoe handling course Best Troop or Crew awarded to the unit based on overall performance/conduct and points earned at activities Note: Prizes will be given with each award. Adult patrols are not eligible to receive awards, but are encouraged to show participation spirit and set the example for their youth. ALL TRASH MUST BE CARRIED OUT Do not use the dumpsters near the entrance to the camp, unless you are a Virginia resident. There is camera surveillance and you will be fined for using the dumpsters. THE PATROL METHOD This camporee is designed to promote the fact that the patrol is the basic unit and should be run by the youth. Robert S.S. Baden-Powell stressed the patrol method, which was designed to be boy-run and boy-led (youthled for Crews). Scoutmasters and Advisors are expected to let the youth handle as much as possible. On the trail of competition, youth are expected to take charge of their patrols and provide the proper leadership. Adults are expected to refrain from providing active leadership. Judges will deduct points for overly active adult leadership and coaching. Awahili Spring Camporee, 2017 Page 2 of 8
3 The Senior Patrol Leader/Crew President is expected to lead his Unit, and the Patrol Leaders are expected to lead their patrols. Camporee and event judges will be looking for this key component of a youth-run unit. Points will be awarded based on how well a patrol and unit accomplishes their tasks, utilizing the patrol method. Judges will also be looking for teamwork and Scout spirit throughout the weekend. SCHEDULE Friday, April 7 Time Event Location 5:00 to Check-In; Units submit rosters. 4 DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES The challenge activities are divided into 3 sections - canoeing, biking, and backpacking/backcountry skills. Your patrol will work its way through all of the challenge activities together. Most activities are designed to take 20 minutes. Some activities will take 40 minutes. Canoe Section Activity Canoe Handling Course Packing Canoes for a Trek Extract a Broached Canoe Canoe Trek Race Description Participants will navigate through a designated course. The canoe with the best time will earn the Paddle of Honor Each patrol would need to move a 2,000 lb log a distance of16 feet using ropes and gear they would have on a canoe trek to simulate moving a broached canoe Patrols have to move their entire patrol through a water and land course that includes portaging both boats and gear. The patrol with the best time will be recognized at the Awards recognition. Note: We are not intending to bring gear over water so it will stay dry. Biking Section Activity Mountain Bike Agility Course Biking Safety Quiz Game Bike Maintenance Relay Mountain Bike Race (Optional) - Sunday Description Maneuver a mountain bike through a series of obstacles and low speed challenges. Participants will be timed. Each member of the patrol assembles part of a bike, relay style, so that the bike can be ridden to the finish line Participants bring their own bikes for a Sunday morning race that begins and ends at the flag pole just before Sunday Interfaith Service. Backpacking / Backcountry Skills Section Activity Description Water Purification Demo and Practice Fire Wood Processing Relay Building a Leave No Trace Cooking Fire Setting up a Dining Fly Use only a tarp and two staves to set up a dining fly Cross the River With their gear, the patrol must make its way across a simulated river without getting wet Cooking For Saturday s dinner each patrol, using only wood fuel that they collect and process, will cook their dinner with gear they could bring on a canoe trek (that does include dutch ovens!) Patrols will need to cook enough to feed the two staff members that will be eating with them and also send a sample to the Block House to be judged in the fire cooking contest First Aid A number of First Aid challenges will be presented to the patrols throughout the day Awahili Spring Camporee, 2017 Page 4 of 8
5 HOW TO PREPARE YOUR TROOP OR CREW Senior Patrol Leaders and Crew Presidents, You are being presented with an exciting opportunity to lead your Troop or Crew through this year s spring camporee. Make the most of it. Taking the time and effort to prepare your unit and patrols weeks or months prior to the camporee will be time well spent. Gear Preparation Start early to identify what gear your members will need to secure. Beg, borrow, or buy what you need. You should not have to spend a lot of money to gear-up for the camporee. You will be permitted to store your food and heavier cooking gear at the block house until you need it. Your goal should be to keep your pack weight below 30 pounds and much less for smaller participants. That is an achievable goal even without the lightest gear. You will have access to potable water at camp, although extra points will be given for units that collect and purify their drinking water as they would in a backcountry setting. If you are going to purify your drinking water, make sure that each member of your unit knows how to do it safely. Consider the experience level of your patrol in choosing what kind of gear you will bring. Will you be using tents, tarps, or hammocks for shelter? Note: Using hammocks in colder temperatures is not recommended. Cooking Preparation Practice, Practice, Practice! Plan menus and try them out using backpacking stoves and wood fire. Preparation for the Activities Along with brushing up on First Class Scout skills, the best way to get your unit ready for the Challenge Activities is to work through the material in the BSA Merit Badge books for Canoeing, Biking, Backpacking, and Camping. This is a good opportunity to work on these merit badges if members of your unit do not have them. The Eagle Camp Fire + OA Tap Out We encourage all the units to invite their Eagle Scout alumni to join them for this weekend. It would be a great way for these men to get reacquainted with their troops and scouting. We would like to see these Eagle Scouts participate heavily in the campfire.
