2 Important Event Information: The goal of this event is to provide a day-camp experience that will entail a collection of activities for current Webelos and Bears (Scouts who will be Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts this fall) to introduce practical Scouting Skills that are needed and used in Boy Scouts. Activities include tent set-up and take-down, flagraising, fire safety and starting, slingshots and cooking. Some of the planned activities can be used to complete rank advancement requirements for the Webelos and Arrow of Light requirements, at the Den Leader s discretion. Please note which activities are completed by your Scout(s) so your Den Leader can review the activities and sign off, where appropriate. An activities checklist will be provided to help assist with this task. Scouts will be formed into Patrols of no more than 10, just like in a Boy Scout Troop. They will be assigned/provided a Staff Patrol Leader, and a Staff Assistant Patrol Leader to help guide them through the activities. The PL and APL will be Boy Scouts who are ranked First Class or above, and who are part of the event staff. We follow the BSA s Guide to Safe Scouting Rules. As such, it is required that every Bear Scout would have an adult accompany them at the event. Webelos must have at least 2 adults minimum to accompany their patrol, with an overall ratio of 1 leader per 10 Webelos Scouts. The adult leader that escorts the patrol will need to complete the attached activities checklist. This form must be turned in to the Activities Team to receive the event patch. It is the responsibility of that adult to make sure that every Scout in their unit participates in all the activities. Patrols unaccompanied by an adult may not be able to use the activities as rank advancement. Depending on your group s size, units may be divided and/or combined with other units to form Patrols. At least one adult from each Pack must accompany each patrol at all times. All Scouts should participate in all rotations. Missing rotations will result in incomplete or partial activities checklists, used to determine Den Leader sign-off. Stations are scheduled for 45 minutes, allowing for 5 minutes for passing to the next station. All stations will be located on the Activity Field, unless otherwise noted. A general outline of the day is listed in this packet for convenience and reference. As noted, Scouts will be cooking their own lunch. Please bring a mess kit with a plate, cup, bowl and spoon for each Scout or adult participant. We want everyone to be safe. If a Scout or adult has allergies or special dietary needs, please make sure this has been communicated to Jenny Veith via at least one week prior to camp. This event will take place outside, rain or shine. Please plan ahead and dress for the weather. Rain gear may be needed. Scouts should NOT carry umbrellas. Sunscreen and bug spray will likely come in handy. Scouts must wear closed-toed shoes, not flip-flops or sandals. A day-pack or backpack for carrying items is suggested. 5 Webelos Required Adventure - Cast Iron Chef #2 Prepare a balanced meal in the outdoors. Discuss and practice food safety when preparing the meal. Webelos Required Adventure - Cast Iron Chef #3 Use tinder, kindling, and fuel wood to demonstrate how to build a fire in an appropriate outdoor location. After allowing the fire to burn safely, safely extinguish the flames with minimal impact to the fire site. AOL Required Adventures - Build a Better World #1 Show how to properly display the flag in public, and help lead a flag ceremony. AOL Required Adventures - Outdoorsman Option A - #2 Determine where to set up your tent. Demonstrate knowledge of what makes a good tent site and what makes a bad one. Set up your tent without help from an adult. AOL Required Adventures - Outdoorsman Option A - #5 Show how to tie a bowline. Explain when this knot should be used and why. Teach it to another Scout who is not a Webelos Scout. AOL Required Adventures - Scouting Adventure - #4 With your Webelos den leader, parent, or guardian, participate in a Boy Scout troop s campout or other outdoor activity. Use the patrol method while on the outing. AOL Required Adventures - Scouting Adventure - #5a Show how to tie a square knot, two half hitches, and a taut-line hitch. Explain how each knot is used.
