3 Overmountain District Fall Camporee Kings Mountain National Park, South Carolina October 6-8, 2017 All Sequoyah Council Troops & Venture Crews Invited Join us and experience some important history as well as Colonial skills and a Lot of Fun This is the 3 rd segment of a 3 year Camporee following the 1780 Overmountain Victory Trail to King s Moun-tain. This trail lead to the turning point in the American Revolu(onary War. Bri(sh Major Patrick Ferguson was defeated at King s Mountain October 7, 1780 by a group of mountain men from this area. Overmountain District started on the trail in Abingdon, VA in In 2015 the Camporee was at Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals in Elizabethton. This year the Camporee will be at King s Mountain National Park, South Carolina. We will attend the Park s events on Saturday October 8. The Park will be open 9-5 with a variety of demonstra(ons: trades and cra;s, cooking, medicine, weapons, children's activities, and more. There is also a patch that can be earned while at Kings Mountain (see below). Information about Kings Mountain may be found at ovta.org website under the heading About. Camping will be at the King s Mountain State Park which joins the Na(onal Park. Address: Website: Kings Mountain State Park 1277 Park Rd, Blacksburg, SC h8p:// The campsites are primi(ve (no electricity, no grass, just gravel) and handle up to 50 campers per site. Each site has access to central water and near privy toilets (within 100 yds of any site). Each site has a fire ring. Cannot bring firewood. May pickup wood lying around and can buy wood at Trading Post. Suggest use charcoal or gas stoves. The Park does not allow vehicles and trailers to be left in the camping areas. Can drive in and unload. Then take vehicles and trailers to the parking area. If you can t camp in the primitive sites, you can make your own reserva(ons in the regular camping area. Need to do it now. Call PARK (7275) or online by clicking the Park Reservations banner. The National Park Service will write a school excuse for any scout who needs one. Camporee cost is $15 and includes t-shirt and patch. Need number going, and who needs school excuse by September 20. Saturday night, October 8, 7:00 to 8:00pm, the Park will have guided lantern tours of the ba8lefield (reservations required). Need number count by September 20 if you want to take a tour.

4 Kings Mountain NPS patch (can earn this patch) Scout must 1. Camp at Kings Mountain State park 2. Hike from the State Park to the National Park (2.5 miles one way) 3. Watch the movie, Battle of Kings Mountain 4. Walk the battlefield trail as they individually answer a test questionnaire 5. Once test is completed bring in to Visitor Center to have checked and stamped 6. Have State Park Ranger stamp each test 7. Mail all the paperwork (this will be given to you at the Visitor Center) along with $2.50 per patch Saturday night, October 7, from 7:00 to 8:00pm, there will be guided lantern tours of the battlefield (reservations required). There are several other places to visit while you are at Kings Mountain. Some of them are: a Historic Farm in the State Park, several trails around both the National and State Parks, Houser House back side of National Park, Cowpens National Park, just to mention a few. Contacts: David Doan Brandon Hart Additional Notes Troops should prepare sack lunches for Saturday and plan to eat in the activity area instead of traveling back to the camping area. All attendees will receive and wear a Camporee t-shirt during the day on Saturday. The Park Service may ask us to participate in a Trash Pick Up during the day on Saturday. Our Sunday morning worship service will begin at 7:00 am (before breakfast) to allow Troops to leave early if needed. Pre-Registration may be submitted using the form at this link:

(If leaders help, points will be deducted, but leaders are free to prepare their own food for themselves and visitors) Cleanliness; proper food handling and sanitation are required. SPL Responsible for bringing a small portion of their meal to the judging table (Headquarters Tent) at the Troop s assigned time. Portions should be plated in a presentable display and should include enough of each item for tasting by four judges. All serving items, trays, plates, utensils and other display items will be available for pickup at the Headquarters tent after the Saturday night Campfire.
