2 The Turning Point District s 2017 Spring Camporee will be held in the rolling hills of Southern Washington County in the Town of Greenwich, NY. The Camporee will be held at the Christ The King Spiritual Life Center, home of Beaver Cross Camp, a summer program for youth. This camporee, the first for the new district, is geared toward offering exciting opportunities not normally seen at a District Level Camporee, and introducing the scouts to all areas of our new district while creating opportunities to make new friends with scouts from those areas. In this packet you will find all of the information that you may need for the camporee, including a schedule for the weekend, activities offered, camping information, and registration details. 4 Camporee Activities There are lots of fun activities planned for the Camporee. Our intention is to have enough to do that the patrols will always have something to do, eliminating the I m Bored comments. There will be some scored activities, where the results can be tabulated and patrols awarded for the highest score, fastest time, longest distance, etc. There are also activities planned that give the scouts the chance to test themselves and the other members of their patrols, and forcing the patrols to work together to achieve the goal. The satisfaction of completing these events will be the award. Saturday Lunch With the size of the CTK grounds, and how spread out the activities are going to be, it is suggested, although not required, that the scouts consider carrying their lunch with them Saturday morning. That way they do not need to walk all the way back to their campsite to eat, and there will be more time to do the activities. Scored Activities LNT CUP The return of The Leave No Trace Cup! Troops will have a campsite inspection observing their use of LNT principles, and there will be a LNT activity area as well. Troops that show the implementation and knowledge of the LNT principles the best scores the highest!

5 CHOPPED Turning Point Edition troops will be given 4 ingredients at the Friday night Cracker Barrel. Troops will have use of their own pantry and fridge, which is any food items they bring with them. Their mission, to include these ingredients in a dish to return at 6:15 PM Saturday. Dishes are judged on taste, presentation, and implementation of the 4 secret ingredients. First Aid patrols will be presented with a scenario and will treat the injuries using proper technique and precautions. Each patrol should carry a first aid kit with them for the day, and will use items from it during the event. Fire Building Patrols will need to have the skills to start a fire to cook an egg. Scores will be weighted based on method used to start the fire, how well they work together, and doneness of the egg. Kim s Game Scouts will be shown a collection of items, and will have to list the items after the items are covered. Pioneering Scouts will need to use pioneering skills to complete a task. Ropes and other needed supplies will be provided Semaphore Patrols will split in to two groups. Scouts will need to transmit a message using Semaphore. Judged on speed of transmission and accuracy of message Orienteering Patrols will need to provide their own compass and complete a compass course.

6 Relay Race patrol will need to complete a course with several stations. Each leg of the race will include a different physical activity or scouting skill. Scout / District Trivia Patrols will be presented with a set of questions. Questions will include general scouting knowledge, scouting historical information, and questions about geographical features and attractions within the District. Team Building exercises There will be a collection of team building exercises where the patrol will need to use problem solving skills and work together to complete each task. The overall score from the multiple team building events will decide on which patrol works together the best! The Legend of Scouting Shield Design Each Patrol, instead of a patrol flag, has the opportunity to create a shield ahead of the camporee displaying a coat of arms that represent their patrol name and their own interpretation of the Legend of Scouting. Shields can be entered for judging at 6:15 on Saturday, the same time that the CHOPPED entries are entered. Other Activities The following activities are offered, but they will not be scored. The reward will be participating and having fun! Archery Don t throw away your shot, and take a chance at the Archery Range! Staff will be there running the archery range allowing scouts to shoot a bow / arrow.

7 Canoeing Canoes will be available for scouts to explore the Lake of the Sacred Heart on the facility s grounds. Scouts should be a swimmer level from previous years of Summer camp, or have demonstrated their ability to their leader prior to the camporee. PFDs will be provided along with canoes and paddles. Canoes will be out for 15 minute intervals so that we can cycle through and give scouts the opportunity to go. Fishing Scouts will have the opportunity to fish from the shore of Lake of the Sacred Heart. Scouts will not be allowed to fish from the canoes. Tug of War Winner stays on! Try your patrol of 8 in a display of strength and teamwork, and show the other patrol who is superior! Human Foosball Your favorite table game, life sized! Patrols will compete against each other to a score of three. Basketball The courts will be open for shoot around, games, whatever you like. Maybe someone will set up a 3 on 3 tournament! Gaga Ball There will be a Gaga Ball pit. Come and play! Getting To Know You- At the Cracker Barrel Friday night, the SPL will be given sets of 9 identical cards for each scout. The object Trade the cards so that you have the complete set of 9 different cards featuring sites or areas that are fantastic places to plan future scouting activities.

8 Low Ropes Course Staff will be there to allow you to work on some of the low ropes elements of their course. Work together as a patrol and see what you re made of! Rock Wall There is a climbing wall at the site. See if you have what it takes to get to the top! ZIPLINE The Beaver Cross camp facility has a zip line, and we will get to use it! Scouts who want to try out the zip will need to follow staff directions in order to get as many scouts through as possible. We are going to schedule times for the Zip line in our best efforts to get everyone the opportunity to take a trip down it. As part of the registration, please identify the number of scouts who plan to take a ride on the zip line so that we can schedule accordingly. We will give out timed zip line passes to the SPLs at the Cracker Barrel Friday night. Camping Information Troops will be allowed to camp in an area near the zip line. There is a large field that is gently rolling where troops can set up their tents, tarps, etc. For those troops who have a trailer that needs to stay at their campsite, there is a more level area adjacent to the first area. There is also a more wooded area for troops that want to take the opportunity to hammock camp or other low impact camping styles.

9 FIRES ALL CAMPFIRES MUST BE OFF THE GROUND AND IN A CONTAINER THAT WILL HELP PROTECT THE EARTH UNDERNEATH IT! The State of New York has a burning ban for unattended, outdoor burning every year from March 16 th until May 14 th at the earliest. All fires must be attended the entire time they are burning. If it is abnormally dry leading up to the camporee, we may need to prohibit ALL campfires. If this happens we will contact everyone who has registered as early as possible. WATER There will be two locations to acquire water over the weekend, near each end of the camping area. Grey water will be disposed of at a location we will identify during Friday s Cracker Barrel. TRASH All trash needs to be taken with you when you leave. Let s leave the facility better looking than it does when we get there! Battenkill Conservancy Film The Battenkill Conservancy will be showing a film about the Battenkill that they have made. It will surely be a tremendous experience to learn about such a great resource for scouting activities through a part of our district!

10 Campfire Program Saturday night s campfire will be a place where the scouts can do a skit if they choose too. We will also lead some songs for the entire camporee to sing. In addition to that, the night will end with callouts for scouts who have been elected into the Order of the Arrow during this year s election season. If patrols or troops choose to do something at the campfire, they must inform us at the Cracker Barrel Friday night so that we can schedule the program. Registration All registration must be done online through the Twin Rivers Council website.
