What is JLDA and Why Should I Attend? Equipping the next generation of boys and young men involves preparing them for leadership. In Royal Rangers, the process of preparing boys for leadership and engaging them in leadership roles is an integral part of what we do. The process of training junior leaders currently takes place both within the local outpost as well as at the district level. Both play a vital role in leadership development in Royal Rangers. Boys and young men who attend the Junior Leadership Development Academy (JLDA) will be equipped with skills, experiences, and spiritual challenges steering them to become the young men God created them to be. Boys are forged into men through adventures at JDLA: Adventure, with all its requisite danger and wildness, is a deeply spiritual longing written into the soul of man. The masculine heart needs a place where nothing is prefabricated, modular, nonfat, zip lock, franchised, on-line, microwavable. -John Eldredge Trail of the Tomahawk (entering Grades 3 to 6) The Trail of the Tomahawk consists of three camps completed in a maximum of four years. The first two camps, Ranger Training Camp (RTC) 1 and RTC 2, may be completed in any order, but are prerequisites to the third camp. The third year culminates the Trail of the Tomahawk with a Discovery Action Camp (DAC). A cadet who has completed all three camps will finish his Trail of the Tomahawk and will receive a genuine pre-1840s style tomahawk as recognition of his accomplishments. Trail of the Saber (entering Grades 6 to 12) The Trail of the Saber consists of four camps completed in a maximum of six years. The first two camps, Junior Training Camp (JTC) and Advanced Junior Training Camp (AJTC), may be completed in any order, but are prerequisites to the third and fourth camps. For the third and fourth camps, cadets must complete two of the camps listed below. A cadet who completes all four camps (JTC, AJTC, and two action camps) will finish his Trail of the Saber (camp requirements), and will receive a genuine 1860 s style saber as recognition of his accomplishments. Please note that completing the Trail to the Tomahawk is not a pre-requisite to completing the Trail to the Saber. At the age of 16 he found that God had spared his life for a purpose. As with many of us, It took him three years to find that purpose. It was at a ranger camp when God revealed it to him, around the glow of a council fire on a Friday evening. God spoke to him to look and he saw a young man, spiritually broken, at the fire with him. At that time he knew that God had saved him for His purpose of reaching a lost world of young men. He currently serves as the Outpost Coordinator of Souls s Harbor Assembly of God where he enjoys ministering to young men, being married to his wife Shasta, and trying to lead his children after their Savior.
Which Camp Should I Register for? The 2019 Trail of the Tomahawk Camps offered for boys entering Grades 3 to 6 are: Ranger Training Camp (RTC) 2 Ranger Training Camp (RTC) 2 is one of the two entry level camps for the Trail of the Tomahawk cadets. During this camp, boys will learn their role in a patrol and develop core leadership attributes. Boys will also be trained on the safe operation and proper shooting techniques of an air rifle. (Note: RTC 2 can be taken before RTC 1). Discovery Action Camp Discovery Action Camp is the culmination of the Trail of the Tomahawk. In this camp cadets will use the skills he has learned in RTC to overcome real world obstacles. This camp will test a young man in the four ways a boys grows (mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually). After this camp, a young man will know he is more than a conquerer in Christ! The 2019 Trail of the Saber Camps offered for boys entering Grades 6 to 12 are: Junior Training Camp (JTC) Junior Training Camp (JTC) prepares a young man to minister effectively through the organization of his local church. Through this experience he will understand church leadership roles, discover how to uncover God s plan for his life, and find how he can serve others. Backpack Adventure Camp (Open to Approved Adults) The Backpack Adventure Camp (BAC) is our 2019 Action Camp for the Trail to the Saber cadets. During this camp, young men will learn the basics of backpacking firsthand. During their two day, two night hike, they will learn proper selection and care of gear, packing for the trail, low impact camping, emergency first aid, and map and compass skills. Each boy will need to have the items called out on the backpacking adventure camp packing list. As noted above, adults can attend this camp as a trainee. Adults must be approved by their pastor to attend and must complete the registration process. Elite Adventure Camp Elite Adventure Camp (EAC) is our capstone camp for the Trail to the Saber. It s a boy s final camp at JLDA before he earns his saber. In this camp the cadet will use the skills he has learned over his time at JLDA to overcome real world obstacles. This camp will test him in the four ways a boys grows (mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually). After this camp he will know he is more than a conquerer in Christ!

Indiana District JLDA GENERAL RULES 1. Boys must be supervised at all times. 2. Boys please do not bring any electronics for the weekend. We cannot experience the adventure unless we are sold out to it. 3. Campfires will NEVER be left unattended. They must be extinguished before leaving the campsite. 4. No one should be absent from the formations, council fires, or other special events. Commanders, please do not allow your boys or leaders to stay in the campsite during these special times. 5. Campsites must be clean before your departure. Leave your campsite cleaner than you found it. Security will inspect your campsite for cleanliness. 6. Do not cut or chop live trees. 7. Vehicles must be out of the campsite and parked in designated areas as soon as possible after unloading. Disabled commanders and boys may request parking in other areas. Trailers in campsites must be properly secured. Wheels must be chocked. 8. Adults need to accompany boys to First Aid Station for any treatment needed. 9. Shower facility guidelines MUST be followed at ALL times. Boys will shower in their designated side of the shower facility and commanders will shower in their designated side of the shower facility. 10. Leaders are NOT permitted to camp in the same tents as boys. Boys camp in boys tents, and men camp in their tents. Adult leaders must camp near their boys in separate tents. Following established guidelines will ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at JLDA. Please do not be offended if Security approaches you to correct any of the above situations. Thank you for your cooperation.
Backpacking Action Camp GEAR LIST (Gear needed by the Backpack Adventure Camp Trainee) Headlamp with one set of extra batteries. A handheld flashlight will suffice if you cannot obtain a headlamp. Backpack - Backpack capacity is measured in liters (sometimes in cubic inches). You will need a backpack capable of holding a minimum of 40 liters (50-80 liters is ideal for this camp ( cubic inches)). To put this into perspective, your school backpack is probably around liters. Most decent sized backpacking packs will be in the liter range. Ask family and friends to borrow one or search around. Older backpacks will work just fine. Can be an internal or external frame pack. Take a look at the pillow you sleep with. Imagine trying to fit about four standard pillows in your backpack. That s about the size you will need. Tent - Two or three person tents are good. Talk to your commander and make sure you ll have a tent. Sleeping bag or blanket / quilt - The average lows at night in June are 60 degrees. You will be sleeping in most of your clothes, so you won t need a big, bulky sleeping bag. A thin, lightweight sleeping bag will suffice. Again, ask around to family and friends for a small, lightweight sleeping bag or blanket/quilt. Ideally the sleeping bag will have a stuff sack / compression sack that allows you to compress the sleeping bag to a smaller size, but this is not a requirement. Bottles to carry water - Two 1 liter bottles - OR - three 20 ounce soda bottles. Empty soda bottles will work fine. Do not bring the big 2 liter bottles because they are too big and bulky. Do not bring the disposable bottled water type bottles that are super flimsy. The caps will not work with our filtration systems. Just grab some empty 20 ounce soda bottles and rinse them out before you come to camp. Don t forget the caps! The BEST water bottles for this camp are the SMART brand 1 liter water bottles, which are available at most gas stations. It will have SMART in blue letters on it. Comfortable shoes - You will need comfortable shoes to walk in. You don t need hiking boots but if you have them that will be fine. Old tennis shoes will work just fine. Be careful about bringing super old shoes that are starting to fall apart. If they are starting to fall apart now, they won t make it through the camp and you may be miserable. Flip Flops - We call these camp shoes. This gives your hiking shoes and your feet a chance to air out. Socks - 3 pairs. Comfortable. Any length. One of your body on Friday and two spare. Underwear - 2 pairs. Comfortable. Any length. One on your body on Friday and one spare. T shirts - 2 shirts. Comfortable. One on your body on Friday and one spare. Pants / Shorts Pants are preferred but blue jeans in the rain would be a terrible memory. Think about something like khaki pants or athletic type pants. These tend to be the most comfortable in varied weather conditions. Shorts are less preferred because they offer less protection from minor injuries and bugs. Long sleeve shirt - This is simply for something to wear at night. You could also a rain jacket for this purpose as well if it was the right material. A plastic rain poncho would NOT be a good replacement for a long sleeve shirt. Hat - Any kind of sun blocking hat or baseball hat. Sunblock - A small travel size container is all you need. You will be under the sun for three days. Bug Spray Some kind of bug repellant will be good to keep the mosquitoes and ticks off of us. Toothbrush and Toothpaste - So your teeth don t rot and we don t have to smell your foul breath.
Baby Wipes - Small package from the dollar store will do wonders for the morale of your tent mate. Bandana / Rag This is helpful to have around to help with messes or to handle hot items. Bible OPTIONAL ITEMS If you bring these it will make your life more comfortable. - Mess kit - If you have your own backpacking style stove, pot, spoon, feel free to bring them but we will supply one if you do not have one. Walmart has cheap, cooking systems if you really want to purchase one. A simple metal cup with a handle is all that is needed for the pot. - Knife - A folding pocket knife. Not too big. Sharp is safe and good. Dull is dangerous and bad. - Sleeping mat/pad - If you can borrow a sleeping mat or pad it will make you more comfortable at night but it is not required. Walmart has foam mats in the camping section for about $10-$15. - Sunglasses cheap is good because you ll probably break them or lose them anyways. Dollar Store. - Rain jacket or rain poncho- Check Walmart or the dollar store. - Swimsuit and towel left at Lake Placid to swim in when we return from Salamonie. If you cannot obtain some of the required items please Commander Joshua Price at jwp0369@gmail.com so he can coordinate with you about some options we may have.
