3 MEC NEWS AND MUSE MARCH 2018 Well, blow me away! Winter weather has finally arrived in the high desert. The weather was quite blustery in Adelanto for our Leadership meeting on 2/26, a precursor to Tuesday's storm. The snow started to fall here in Adelanto just before 1pm and continued until a little after 2pm. The winter scene at our home was absolutely breathtaking to me. The kitties that braved the weather enjoyed batting snowflakes. My husband, Stephen, had a doctor's appointment on Hesperia Rd. at 1pm that day and he rode the motorcycle, since the weather looked OK. What a surprise to him when he was ready to ride home. He had never ridden in falling snow, but he took it slowly and arrived home chilled, but envigorated. On Saturday, March 3rd and weather permitting, Patrick Riley is planning to ride to Chapter A's breakfast get together in Lancaster at the Greenhouse Cafe. I f you plan to go, please meet at Starbucks at the 395/Palmdale Rd. at 7:30am. Sunday, March 11th is the beginning of Daylight Saving Time. Remember, we spring ahead so you lose one hour of sleep, but we gain more light in the evenings. Yeh! On Tuesday, March 13th, Chapter V will hold an Olympic Event at the Victor Valley Bowl at 7pm. A fun evening will set you back $8.00 for two games and shoe rental. We will meet for dininer at 5:30pm at Raul's #2 on Palmdale Rd then it's on to the alley. Saturday, March 17th is, of course, St. Patrick's Day. You're invited to our annual celebration at Maxwells for dinner at 6pm. You can have the traditional corned beef and cabbage or enjoy anything else on the menu (as long as it is green). CA-1F is having their rally in the San Diego environs that day. For those of you who are planning to attend, have a fun day and safe trip. Sunday, Marach 18th Chapter V's get together at Maxwells. Perhaps there will be a special on corned beef hash, if you haven't had your fill. Please remember to bring a donation for our drawings. March 20th is the first day of Spring, aka, the Vernal Equinox. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate for Chapter R's final Rally in the Valley March Saturday, March 31rh We will meet at Rubio's Mexican Restaurant at the 395/Palmdate Rd. for dinner at 6pm followed by an ice cream social at Baskin Robbins for dessert. One scoop or two? Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Have a wonderful and safe month. Your MEC, Lisa Glass Volume 35, Issue 3 3

7 Motorcycle Safety Tips Motorcycles are fun. We all know that. They are also more dangerous than a car. Motorcyclists are 30 more times likely to die in a crash than in a car. Those numbers are even scarier for older riders who take up or return to motorcycling after many years. Slower reflexes, weaker eyesight, more brittle bones and other disadvantages cause riders over 60 years of age to be hospitalized after a crash rather than younger riders. Still there are those riders that ride for a lifetime without injury. Optimize your odds by being prepared and avoiding risks. Speed and alcohol are factors present in many accidents. Eliminate those and reduce your risks. Don t buy more bike than you can handle. If you ve been off of motorcycles for a while, you may be surprised by the performance of today s bikes. When shopping for a bike, start with one that fits you. When seated, you should easily be able to rest both feet flat on the ground without having to be on tiptoes. Handlebars and controls should be within easy reach. Invest in antilock brakes. IIHS data shows that motorcycles equipped with ABS brakes were 37 percent less likely to be involved in a fatal crash than bikes without it. The reason is simple: Locking up the brakes in a panic stop robs the rider of any steering control. That can easily lead to a skid and crash, which can result in serious injury. ABS helps you retain steering control during an emergency stop, and it can be especially valuable in slippery conditions. Hone your skills. An MSF course or similar class can teach you the basics, as well as advanced techniques, such as how to perform evasive emergency maneuvers. An approved safety course may make you eligible for an insurance discount and, in some states, to skip the road -test and/or the written test part of the licensing process. Use your head. Riders without a helmet are 40 percent more likely to suffer a fatal head injury in a crash and are three times more likely to suffer brain injuries, than those with helmets, according to government studies. When Texas and Arkansas repealed their helmet laws, they saw a 31- and 21-percent increase in motorcycle fatalities, respectively. A full-face helmet that s approved by the Department of Transportation is the best choice.. Wear the right gear. Jeans, a T-shirt, and sandals are recipes for a painful disaster on a bike. Instead, you want gear that will protect you from wind chill, flying bugs and debris, and, yes, lots of road rash if you should slide out. For maximum protection, go for a leather or other reinforced jacket, gloves, full pants, and over-the-ankle footwear, even in summer. Specially designed jackets with rugged padding and breathable mesh material provide protection as well as ventilation for riding in warm weather. Use a helmet visor or goggles for effective eye protection. Be defensive. A recent study found that in collisions involving a motorcycle and a car, car drivers were at fault 60 percent of the time. You need to be extra alert, especially in this age of epidemic phone use and texting behind the wheel. Keep an eye out for cars suddenly changing lanes or pulling out from side streets.. Avoid bad weather. Slippery conditions reduce your margin for error. Rain not only cuts your visibility but reduces your tires grip on the road, which can make cornering tricky. If you need to ride in the rain, remember that the most dangerous time is right after precipitation begins, as the water can cause oil residue to rise to the top. Avoid making sudden maneuvers and be especially gentle with the brakes, throttle, and steering to avoid sliding. Watch for road hazards. A motorcycle has less contact with the pavement than a car. Sand, wet leaves, or pebbles can cause a bike to slide unexpectedly, easily resulting in a spill. Bumps and potholes that you might barely notice in a car can pose serious danger when on a bike Be ready to roll. Before each ride, do a quick walk-around to make sure your lights, horn, and directional signals are working properly. Check the chain, belt, or shaft and the brakes. And inspect the tires for wear and make sure they re set at the proper pressure.
