Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge The Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) is the world's largest single-marquee social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing/Valkyrie motorcycles -- and some would say, the world's largest family. Dedicated to our motto, Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, GWRRA members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a not-for-profit, non-religious and nonpolitical organization. Founded in 1977, GWRRA has grown to more than 80,000 U.S., Canadian and international members in 53 foreign countries in just 32 years. Over 800 active Chapters are managed by 4,000 volunteer leaders working with members to foster safe, enjoyable riding while also working to improve the public image of motorcycling.

3 Bob & Linda Harmon Chapter Directors Here it is Friday afternoon August 25th. We have been at the Colorado Rally since yesterday. It is great seeing friends that we don t see often. We met people from Florida and I actually asked them how they won Chapter of the Year so many times. Janette said it was a lot of work and she didn t want to do it again. According to JoAnn, our chapter information has been submitted and will be considered this year. Can t wait to see what the outcome is! We just finished playing the game of WINGO that is really like no other game I have ever played. The winner of the game gets $15. They call the numbers one time and when you get five in your row, you win. I will show you how when we get home. This is not the WINGO that we will be playing at the rally. One thing that we did at this rally was make blankets for a community service project. The service was the Alliance Against Domestic Violence. The fleece blankets were laid out and cut. Then a group started tying and we completed 14 blankets in 1.5 hours. The Alliance is coming tomorrow to pick them up and it will feel good to pass them on. They also collected hotel toiletries and bagged them with a pair of sox for distribution to the homeless. Tomorrow night, we will be leaving for Wing Ding. If you are reading this, we are already there. Anyway, are we ready for this? Not sure. We have not written a presentation but we have discussed things that need to be said. We are still in the talking phase. We do this well while traveling. I have my small computer and can make notes so we don t forget what we said, especially if it was good. As far as I am concerned, it is about Chapter Pride. We have an amazing group of people that we represent and want to do our best to show them off. Just know that you will be mentioned during the presentation. Thanks to all of you for your heartfelt wishes. You are with us in our thoughts and deeds. Cannot wait to see you all back in Lancaster. Mammoth follows soon after and we hope to see you there also. Robert Bob & Linda Harmon Chapter Directors Ride Safe it s more Fun!

4 Ken & Jan Pedder Assistant Chapter Director The July meeting was very fun with the two Highway Patrolmen visiting. Hopefully all of you enjoyed it as much as I did. Both of them kept us entertained with their abbreviated biographies. Truly nice guys. Following the meeting a few of us took a ride to Newcomb's Ranch with a stop at the lookout pavilion at Mt. Wilson. The pavilion provides a great view of the San Gabriel Valley when the weather is clear. It happened to be somewhat hazy that day. Oh, well...can't have it all. We did have an enjoyable lunch at Newcomb's Ranch. Too bad the road continuing to Wrightwood was closed but we still had a nice day. We are looking forward to the California District Rally in September. Mammoth will be a nice change from the desert heat. Should be a wonderful extended weekend. Jan and I are also looking forward to October with CA1-M and CA1-V holding their annual events on the same weekend in the middle of the month. We plan to attend CA1-M's event on and then stay the night in Victorville so we can have a leisurely wakeup for Sunday's CA1-V event. The end of the month will bring us to Lake Havasu for the Arizona District Rally. We had a great time last year. The host resort is very relaxing and peaceful. Hope to see you there! 6 Sandy Carbo Membership Enhancement Coordinator The month of August is almost over. It sure has been warm in Lancaster California. Our Antelope Valley Fair is over now for another year. I have personally attended almost every day as I have 3 Grandchildren that are in Grange. Our grandchildren have raised many animals. It has been quite an experience watching them not only raise their animals then they go in the ring and they are judged on each animal and they are judged on showmanship. Bob is in the swimming pool as we speak enjoying. We participated in the National Night Out in Lancaster, I think I enjoy that evening a lot because I love meeting new people and love talking GWRRA especially our group. Our Director and his wife were there along others in our group, we also had various bikes, trikes and even a can am. I think there were 8 10 of us. A few are getting ready for Wing Ding held in Texas. I am looking forward to hearing all about it. Mammoth will be in September. I can hardly wait to go, we have never been there. There is always something to do or a ride to be taken as the weather cools off. I know we would like to be creative and think of new places to go for a visit and some new places to eat???? If anyone has a suggestion, PLEASE call me or feel free to contact me. I love new suggestions, when you are out for a ride on your bike, trike or in a vehicle and you see or eat at a new place, let me know. This is shorter this month, I will write more next month Bye for now, ride safe. Sandy Carbo Membership Enhancement Coordinator

7 National Night Out event held in Lancaster, CA on August 3, 2017 was an opportunity for GWRRA Chapter CA1-A to reach out to the public about Motorist Awareness and the Share the Road ideology. What is national night out? Here is their explanation directly from their web site ( National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes policecommunity partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August (Texas celebrates on the first Tuesday in October). Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more. The Lancaster City Public Service Department provided us a 10 x 20-foot covered space which gave us enough room to display two motorcycle trikes and one Duel Sport bike. Bill & Lois Rose s beautiful Red Goldwing CSC Trike, Russ & Lucy Thome s gorgeous White Can-AM Spider and Ken & Jan Pedder s all cleaned and shining Honda XR650 Duel-Sport bike were on display for the public to view. There were thirteen CA1-A participants helping to hand out 150 Motorist Awareness Tri-fold pamphlets, three pounds of candy, 40 coloring pages with a box of 4 crayons and talking to kids and parents about motorcycle safety on the road. A big thank you to the following people for participating; Bob & Sandy Carbo, Kathy Iseri, Sue & Randy Mendez, Ken & Jan Pedder, Bill & Lois Rose, and Russ & Lucy Thome. The event started officially at 4 PM and ran until 8 PM. An extra special thanks to the Carbos, Pedders, Roses for helping during the setup time from 1:30 to 4 PM and a heartfelt thank you to all for helping with the teardown and packing-up from 8 to 9 PM. I believe this was a successful, and fun event for all both volunteers and the public. Bob & Linda Harmon

8 Nancy & Bob Clark CA District Directors This article is being written as we are traveling from rally to rally. We ended last month s article as we were leaving for Utah District Rally. We had great fun, and although we did not win any large prizes, we were excited to get numerous door prizes (which we have been carrying around the country). The best part is being with fellow wingers. We traveled on to visit friends and attend my 50 th class reunion in Michigan. From there we have traveled back west and are now at Colorado s District Rally, Aloha Colorado, an uproarious time of games, hula skirts, rides, food, and ice cream. From here we will travel back east and south to Grapevine, TX for Wing Ding. This trip has been, and expect to continue to be, a great time with wingers from all over the country, many we know and many new friends. Although we had intended to travel these 7 weeks on our bike (or trike) we ended up needing to go by car. Our youngest son received a job in Liberty, MO the week before we were leaving, and we got the privilege of transporting some of his belongings to him on our way to Michigan. As much as we miss riding the bike, there were several days we were glad we had the car today for one rain and hail. We anticipate a wonderful time at Wing ding and look forward to seeing some of our friends we haven t seen for a year or so. Then it is a quick trip home (after 7 weeks away) to finish up the details of our CA District Rally in Mammoth. We look forward to seeing many of you there. There had been much speculation and discussion about changes in the GWRRA restructuring, but one thing does not change our desire to have fun, our love for motorcycles, the joy of riding (even if it is on 4 wheels now more than 2 or 3), and being with our friends and GWRRA family. We can always count on that. Bear Hugs from your CA District Directors Nancy & Bob Clark California District Directors [gwrra.mamabear@gmail.com]

9 Ken & Jan Pedder CA1A Couple of the Year 2017 As I write this, Jan and I are sitting in the campground at Lake Cachuma. The numerous GWRRA events and activities kept us busy the first half of the year and this is the first opportunity we have had for a camping trip. It is warm here but much better than at home. We have observed groups of friends, families, and even a group of Harley riders enjoying the weekend. All of these folks caused me to reflect on the many friendships we have developed since joining GWRRA. We have met some of the best people. One day we will have the chance to attend Wing Ding and hopefully meet even more great folks. Probably won't be able to find the time until I retire but it gives us something to look forward to. I hope all of you who were able to go had a blast. Fortunately the District Rally is coming up and we will be able to connect with some of the great people we haven't seen for a while. See Y'all soon!! Ken & Jan Pedder CA1A Couple of the Year

16 Better Than Starbucks Lemon Loaf If you like Starbucks Lemon Loaf, then you'll love this moist, delicious Lemon cake! This easy to make recipe is loaded with delicious lemon flavor, and topped with an amazing lemon frosting. Ingredients 1½ c. flour 1 (3.4 oz.) package, instant Lemon pudding mix ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. baking soda ½ tsp. salt 3 eggs 1 c. sugar 2 Tbsp. butter, softened 1 tsp. vanilla 2 tsp. lemon extract ⅓ c. fresh lemon juice ½ c. oil ¾ c. plain Greek yogurt zest of one lemon Frosting: 3 Tbsp. Butter, soft but not melted 1½ c. powdered sugar 3 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. lemon extract Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line the bottom of a 5 x 9" loaf pan with a piece of waxed paper. (With a pencil, trace the bottom of the pan on a piece of waxed paper and cut out with scissors.) Spray the pan, and waxed paper with non-stick baking spray. Set aside. 2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, pudding mix, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. With a stand or hand mixer, combine the eggs, sugar, butter, vanilla, lemon extract, lemon juice, oil and yogurt. Mix until evenly combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the lemon zest, and mix until just combined. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake for 55 minutes, or until center is fully set, and a toothpick inserted comes out crumb free. 3. After baking, let cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes. Run a knife around the sides of the pan, invert and remove from the pan, removing the waxed paper from the bottom. Cool completely on a cooling rack. 4. For the frosting: Combine the butter, lemon juice and lemon extract with hand or stand mixer. Gradually add the powdered sugar, and beat until smooth and creamy. Evenly spread the frosting over the top of the loaf. Refrigerate to let frosting set completely before slicing. Refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container..

26 Mike Ridgway Hello Gold Wing riders. My name is Mike from Chapter Q, and I am here to help if I can. During our trip to Wing Ding in Montana two of our Wings broke down. It cost one rider approx. $ the other about $ to get home. This really bothers me to no end! I went out and purchase a Motorcycle / Trike tow unit for my pickup truck. Now I am retired, so I have all the time in the world! I would like to offer to any Winger that breaks down and after using all of their AAA towing benefit s and any other tow services and they still are not home, CALL me and I will go get them FREE, just pay for my gasoline and buy me a hamburger. THANX Mike.
