Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge The Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) is the world's largest single-marquee social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing/Valkyrie motorcycles -- and some would say, the world's largest family. Dedicated to our motto, Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, GWRRA members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a not-for-profit, non-religious and nonpolitical organization. Founded in 1977, GWRRA has grown to more than 80,000 U.S., Canadian and international members in 53 foreign countries in just 32 years. Over 800 active Chapters are managed by 4,000 volunteer leaders working with members to foster safe, enjoyable riding while also working to improve the public image of motorcycling.

3 Bob & Linda Harmon Chapter Directors Our Day Out Well folks, it s May already, and boy did we have a good April. I hope all who attended our annual rally had a great time. The new International Tape Measure Racing Association (ITMRA) drag race track built and donated to the chapter by your own Linda, Jan, Ken and I seem to be a big hit at the rally. I hope it will be a recurring hit each time it is used. The only other ITMRA race track I am aware of, and the inspiration for this one, is in Colorado and was introduced at their district rally last year where Linda won 1 st place. Saturday April 21 st was a day to remember. We flocked to the Sgt. Steve Owens Park early in the morning to man the booth at the Annual Lancaster Poppy Festival. I want to thank all the CA1A volunteers for helping with the promotion of Motorist Awareness at the event this weekend. Two days of talking to the public about motorcycle safety, share the road, and oh yes you can take a picture of your children (adults too) setting on Linda s trike. We met so many people and had so many kids sitting on our trike that it was great! Lots of fun for all. We were part of the Safety Zone along with LA County Sheriff, CHP, CERT and other organizations promoting public safety. It was a great experience to meet the public and talk to interested parties. Unfortunately, things happened, and some CA1A folks were not able to assist. Those that missed out will have other opportunities in the future. National Night Out will be coming in August. This is a one afternoon event that is held in downtown Lancaster. We need to be seen publicly so we can be seen in traffic. Connecting with children to watch for bikes really helps them to point us out to their parents. Warm weather is here, and riding is great. We have a scheduled education day on May 12 that will have ARC, TRC, CPR, Co-Rider, Riding in the Heat, and one other class to be determined. 4 Ken & Jan Pedder Assistant Chapter Director April started out with much activity for our Chapter with our annual event. It seemed to be well attended and I believe we saw a lot of people having fun. Jan and I would like to extend our sincere thanks to our chapter members who provide so much help in putting this on. This includes both the months of planning and the actual work during the event. Thanks again! Another highlight was Chapter K s annual event which was focused on the celebration of Ken Freeland s life. Jan and I took this hard as we had gotten to know him some him over the years. Fortunately, the desire to celebrate his life translated into a positive gathering with some lighthearted memories being recounted. We had a great day and the weather for the ride to and from the event could not have been better. Now that the good weather has arrived it would be a good time to give the bike a thorough inspection. I know I am guilty of not looking at the little things during my pre-ride inspections. I may have a shortened ride one day if I don t take care of these little things that might need attention. There are some riding opportunities coming up in May. Chapter CA1-L will host their Picnic at the Castle with sign- being at the Cycle Gear in San Luis Obispo and ending at the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. The Hoot in the Ute will be held in Utah over the long weekend. I know some of you folks will be going. It should be fun. With the return of good weather, we would like to get some more rides in. Please let Russ or myself know if you have any suggestions for rides. As you may know, Russ and I are busy and don t always have time to come up with ideas. Some of you have submitted ideas that we haven t been able to put in place yet. We will try to incorporate those as we can. Also, if some of you would like to do some riding during the work week and have a destination and time in mind please let Jan know. She will make the phone calls to alert the other folks. 5 Sandy Carbo Membership Enhancement Coordinator HI, how is everyone in CA1A, now that our event for the year is over I believe we can take a bit of a breather. I am sure there are a lot of people exhausted with all the hard work and many hours that were put in such as our Directors Bob and Linda and our ACD s Jan and Ken. They did tons of work with a lot of the games that were built from scratch. Lucy and Kathy put a lot of effort and hours of work with a few of the gifts that were put up for auction. I am sure you all realize Lucy works 40 plus hours and then goes home to work on various items either being used for decorations or put up for auction. Thanks Lucy for all you do. I know I cannot mention everyone and what they did but I truly thank you. I would also like to again thank Linda Harmon for recruiting the Student nurses to serve food, help with the games and for helping to clean up. You are all awesome and we want you to know they are greatly appreciated. I am sure you all realize that everyone is needed, no single person is not needed. I don t want to forget our Treasurer JoAnn, you have a big job and you really put in a good days work from 6:00 am until almost 5:00 pm. Thanks to the men that helped in the setup and teardown. I would be lax if I forgot to thank all that worked for the Poppy Festival. That was a tremendous amount of work for the Harmon s, again our Directors Linda and Bob give 200% effort with everything we as a group get involved with. 6 Linda Harmon District Educator Education Information As the District Educator, I want to assist each chapter in determining their educational needs. Education days are in the planning stages in both northern and southern California. We will be looking for locations that can handle a group for classes and lots for ARC/TRC courses. If anyone has access to any of these types of areas, please let me know. EDUCATIONAL OFFERING: May 12 in Adelanto, CA there will be an ARC, TRC, CPR, Co-Rider Course, Riding in the Heat and possibly one other course offered. Information is available on the California District Website. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Get your space reserved quickly. PERSONAL DATABASE ACCESS: Without a chapter educator, questions about the databank can be accessed by each person. Now, everyone can keep up on your Rider Level currency. If you have a problem with access, feel free to contact me, Linda Harmon, to assist you. Now is the time to service you Honda Article written by Bill Rose To help keep your motorcycle in good shape, this section includes a maintenance schedule for required service, a list of periodic checks you should perform at least once a month, and step by step instructions for the specific maintenance tasks. You ll also find important safety precautions, information on fuels, oils and tips for keeping your Honda looking great. THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE Keeping your motorcycle well-maintained is absolutely essential to your safety. It-s also a good way to protect your investment, get maximum performance, avoid breakdowns, and have more fun. A properly maintained motorcycle will also help to reduce air pollution. Remember, proper maintenance is the owners responsibility. Be sure to inspect your motorcycle before each ride, perform the periodic checks and follow the maintenance schedule in this section. IS YOUR MOTORCYCLE READY TO RIDE Before each ride, it s important to inspect your motorcycle and make sure any problem you find is corrected. A pre ride inspection is a must not only for safety, but because having a breakdown, or even a flat tire, can be a major inconvenience. PRE RIDE INSPECTION Check the following before you get on the Motorcycle. 1. Tires and Wheels Look at the tires for wear and low air pressure 2. Leaks and Loose parts 3. Lights. Check to see if all lights work REQUIRED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE The schedule below suggest how often you should have your motorcycle serviced and what things need attention. It is essential to have your motorcycle serviced as scheduled to maintain safe dependable performance. Some items in the maintenance schedule can be performed with basic mechanical skills and hand tools. Procedures for these items are in the Honda Owner s manual as well as the maintenance schedule. I have collected my information from my 2008 Honda owner s manual. The next articled will dive into Schedule Maintenance but hands on. Bill Rose

12 Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes Ingredients Cupcakes 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 Tbsp vegetable oil 1 cup granulated sugar 3 eggs, large 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 2/3 cup buttermilk 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 cup sour cream Whipped Cream Cheese Filling 1 cup heavy whipping cream 6 oz whipped cream cheese 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 cup powdered sugar 2 tsp lemon zest Topping Powdered Sugar Strawberry halves (about 16-18) Instructions Cupcakes Preheat oven to 375 and line 2 cupcakes tins with liners. Cream butter and vegetable oil until light and fluffy, about 1 minute. Add in granulated sugar, and beat until well combined and fluffy, about 1 minute. Add in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Add in vanilla extract and sour cream, and mix until combined. Spoon batter evenly into cupcake tins, about 2/3 full (batter makes around cupcakes). Bake for minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean. Allow to cool. Whipped Cream Cheese Filling Beat heavy cream on high until soft peaks form. Add in powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon zest, and beat until stiff peaks form. Add in whipped cream cheese, 2 oz at a time, beating well after each addition. (Cream will keep in the fridge until ready to fill cupcakes; additionally, the cream will keep in the cupcakes at room temperature for a few hours). With a pairing knife, cut out a circle in the center of the cup cake, going about half way down into the cupcake. Keep the tops. Fill each center with filling, place a strawberry half in the center, and set the cupcake top on this side. When ready to serve, top with powdered sugar. Keep leftovers in the fridge. Enjoy!
