Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge The Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) is the world's largest single-marquee social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing/Valkyrie motorcycles -- and some would say, the world's largest family. Dedicated to our motto, Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, GWRRA members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a not-for-profit, non-religious and nonpolitical organization. Founded in 1977, GWRRA has grown to more than 80,000 U.S., Canadian and international members in 53 foreign countries in just 32 years. Over 800 active Chapters are managed by 4,000 volunteer leaders working with members to foster safe, enjoyable riding while also working to improve the public image of motorcycling.

3 Bob & Linda Harmon Chapter Directors Times they are a changing! As I sit here in Texas, waiting for my life to have some significant changes, I have had many thoughts go through my head. What am I doing? Why am I doing it? What do I get out of it? I have been without Bob for a month now and I really miss him. We have been together for 20 years and I am very accustomed to his face! He is a very real part of me. Now everyone will know that the move is real. We have had lookers at our home and hope to hear offers soon. Pipe dreams are becoming a reality. While nothing is set in stone presently, the form is built and the concrete is in the mixing stage (lol!). We are searching the internet daily for homes in the area we have designated as our new destination. This adventure is becoming real. I know that I am going to miss many people but please know that you are not forgotten. I plan on coming back to visit. I am looking forward to Lake Havasu! I watched via Facebook as friends went on the adventure of Zermatt this weekend. I was so looking forward to that trip, but it became an issue that needed to be reconsidered for our life change. I am happy to see so many of our friends having a great time in a beautiful place. I know there will be other times and I will see them again. So far, this article is about me, my apologies but I needed to say some things to get them off my chest. God has plans for us and we are to follow his lead. We are following that lead. The world we live in is smaller than you think. We will all be friends for a long time. Bob has spent the last month alone getting things ready there for the transition. He has had to make some choices and some plans alone. We discuss everything, but he is still alone. I appreciate all the calls and attention he has had from friends there. You are greatly appreciated. This will be our last letter to the chapter as CDs. Officially, July 1 will be Ken and Jan Pedder taking the reins. We have great faith in their abilities and drive to continue to make CA1A great. It is the best chapter which has been proven and documented. We know we are #1!!!! We both are extremely proud to be part of this great group!!! Just because our home address is different, we are still part of 1A and will continue to be. Robert Bob & Linda Harmon Chapter Directors Ride Safe it s more Fun!

4 Ken & Jan Pedder Assistant Chapter Director We finally got a chance to enjoy some warm weather this month. Our after gathering ride took us to the La Lena restaurant in the Pine Mountain Club. While the destination was a nod toward Cinco de Mayo the good food was another reason for the choice. The weather was just right, and we had a great time. The following weekend some of us rode to Ridgecrest to partake in the annual Biker s Blessing held at the Calvary Chapel. The participants met in the parking lot at the chapel and socialized for a while and then moved into the chapel where we enjoyed a short invocation and some reflection. Afterward, we saddled up and rode in parade format through the town of Ridgecrest and into Inyokern ending up back at the chapel. The town of Ridgecrest appears to look forward to this parade as the streets were lined with spectators. We had a Police escort and every intersection was blocked off for us never stopped once. A tasty barbecue lunch was served, and we had fun talking to folks. This was a superbly coordinated event and all of us chapter members had a fantastic time. We urge you not to miss out next year. The weather this month has been absolutely wonderful for riding. Jan and I missed out on the ride to San Luis Obispo for Chapter CA1-L s annual event due to unforeseen events. I was really looking forward to getting up to San Simeon, but it was not meant to be. Perhaps we will go soon just for the enjoyment of riding along the coast. The hot weather will be here soon, and dehydration can happen quickly when riding in 100-degree weather. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids when riding in the summer. The last thing you want to do is become disoriented while riding. Just wanted to remind all of you that if some of you would like to do some riding during the work week and have a destination and time in mind please let Jan know. She will make the phone calls to alert the other folks. See you out on the road...ride often but ride safe! Ken & Jan Pedder Assistant Chapter Director

9 MEMBERS & THEIR BIKES This month s article is written by Bill & Juanita Willis Well you all have to read about my Wife's and My Riding adventures again, only because, after Ken's pleading for someone to do a newsletter article, I stepped up and volunteered once again. PLEASE, please consider doing a newsletter article of your GWRRA adventures. My subject this time is our adventure doing the GWRRA Ride Captain training in Fountain Valley CA. On the May 28 and 29. Juanita and I rode down to Fountain Valley the 28 th to take the Ride Captain Training on the 29 th. The ride down was a training event for Juanita, as she had never ridden traffic conditions like the congested freeways of the Los Angeles area. We encountered slow to stop and go and freeway parking lot traffic conditions, on the 55. Simply changing lanes was a challenge in such traffic. So many would not yield, cut us off and were a hazard. A heads up was required and full attention to other traffic was a taxing requirement. I'm sure Juanita must have truly been in brain over load. We did get their safely and met up with Don, the Calif. District Ride Coordinator and John, sorry I don't remember his last name, the Road Captain Training Instructor. We had dinner together in the hotel and joined them for breakfast the next morning. At breakfast Don said the local rider who planned the Road Course Ride notified him, the previous evening that he had a family emergency and had a flight out the morning of our class. Don and John used an app, like Map Quest to plan the Ride Captain Training road portion of the class. They did not know the area any more than I or Juanita. We were joined in the class by several other Chapter riders form outside the area but came to the class that morning. The classroom portion of the class was very informative and brought out some techniques/ideas I had never thought of or known. One of the things I am going to propose at our next meeting. My proposal will be that, we put a first aid kit with serious first aid items for a real tragic situation, including a defibrillator rescue breathing device, large compress bandages bundles of gauze etc. The kit should be carried on each chapter ride and strapped in the luggage rack of a bike in the group for easy access. Both Juanita and I think this to be a good Idea. Perhaps it could save a life. John (our Instructor) carries this type emergency first aid kit on his bike. We also learned the need for good communications. All riders in the class had CB's. Glad they did, in the tough traffic situations we encountered. The road portion of the course was, as you might suspect, some what a disaster. We were in the wrong lanes, missed turns/had to make U-turns in heavy traffic and got lost. The road training was tougher than Don and John had thought it would be. The CB's were a great help.

10 We did learn the reason for knowing the route and pre-ride the route if possible. We also learned the need for good communications, all riders in the class had CB's. Glad they did, in the tough situations like we encountered hand signals are almost impossible to pass down the line before the next turn, like we encountered. Hand signals are almost impossible to pass down the line before the next turn, and not knowing the route in the troubling traffic conditions was very difficult. We were in Parking lot like conditions, because of, what I believe to be an accident ahead. At the time our Ride Captain (in training) lived in the LA area rides in similar conditions regularly and made the decision to try and find a way around the impossible traffic. She after an extended reroute managed to get us back on track; thanks to GPS technology. The end of the ride course was supposed to end in time to attend CA1S's Rally. We finally got their just as they were completing the last of the drawings and the cleanup. Now for the trip home, the freeways were impossible to negotiate once again you could not get into the turn lane in time to make turn if we were in the wrong lane, even if we began changing lanes when the signs for the turn street were first spotted. We had to back track several times to get to the correct turn. When we got to the Cajon Pass I thought we would be better off. How wrong I was! From the pass all the way back to Ridgecrest we had winds of 60-70mph. Certainly glad the instructor covered riding in wind and oncoming truck hazards while riding in the wind for Juanita's sake. Many trucks had pulled off the road and were not driving the heavy wind conditions. Juanita had never ridden in any of these conditions, and the Training she received in the Ride Captain Course proved invaluable. I recommend that all fellow riders take the class if possible. I group ride a lot and found the training to be very informative and I think I'm a better rider because of it. Juanita thinks she is a much better rider and now understands the dynamics and reasons behind group riding protocols. I also recommend all riders check out the Group Riding Handbook on the GWRRA Website. I will close with this, always keep your head on a swivel and look out for danger from any direction. Remember you have a responsibility for group safety even if you are a member of the pack and you are always responsible for your own safety. Ride safe. Bill Willis

27 Mike Ridgway Hello Gold Wing riders. My name is Mike from Chapter Q, and I am here to help if I can. During our trip to Wing Ding in Montana two of our Wings broke down. It cost one rider approx. $ the other about $ to get home. This really bothers me to no end! I went out and purchase a Motorcycle / Trike tow unit for my pickup truck. Now I am retired, so I have all the time in the world! I would like to offer to any Winger that breaks down and after using all of their AAA towing benefit s and any other tow services and they still are not home, CALL me and I will go get them FREE, just pay for my gasoline and buy me a hamburger. THANX Mike.
