Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge The Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) is the world's largest single-marquee social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing/Valkyrie motorcycles -- and some would say, the world's largest family. Dedicated to our motto, Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, GWRRA members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a not-for-profit, non-religious and nonpolitical organization. Founded in 1977, GWRRA has grown to more than 80,000 U.S., Canadian and international members in 53 foreign countries in just 32 years. Over 800 active Chapters are managed by 4,000 volunteer leaders working with members to foster safe, enjoyable riding while also working to improve the public image of motorcycling.

3 Ken & Jan Pedder Chapter Directors I have been collecting information from the District Educator regarding folks whose training is currently, or about to, expire. I hope to have the information tallied up soon, so we can focus on getting the training you folks need to keep your rider levels current. We will be sharing this information with each of you in the next couple of weeks and hope to get the training lined up quickly. As you know, two of our local trainers are now in Texas but I will do what I can to get something going as quickly as possible. Our after gathering ride in July took us to Newcomb s Ranch on Highway 2. The food is a little pricy there, but it is good and plentiful. Despite the elevation it was warm and humid. We were treated to a brief summer shower on our way down the hill to, once again, bask in the desert heat during the final stage of the return trip. A few of us rode to Ventura to attend Chapter S s annual event. This was a delightful event and afforded us another chance to escape the desert heat. The food was great, as were the prizes. We had a ton of fun and were treated to a performance by the Gold Angels. The weather could not have been better. Several of our members were in San Diego last weekend to attend services and a Celebration of Life for Alma Sprenkle (Bubbles). It was a bittersweet day for Jan and me as we felt a deep loss which was somewhat offset by the positive aspect of the Celebration of Life. The service was very nice, and the Celebration of Life was absolutely wonderful. The celebration was held in a park in Mission Bay and the setting could not have been better. The GWRRA membership was out in force. I don t know how many members were there, but I saw an awful lot of Chapter vests. This was a testimony to Alma s presence and popularity. Our hearts go out to Steve and the whole family. See you out on the road...ride often but ride safe! Ken & Jan Pedder Chapter Directors

5 Russ Thome Ride Coordinator Hi All, Well, the 4th went off with a bang and we all had a blast being in the parade. Weather was great as we were blessed with overcast skies until about 9 when the sun broke through and started to warm things up. We had Randy and Sue on point in their golf cart with our banner proudly displayed, then Ken on his bike, then, on trikes,(not exact order) Jerry, Bob and Nancy, Gordon, Andrew and Judy, Rick and Lori, Bill and Marjorie, Jan and Kathy then Lucy and I. There were tons of people there and spirits were high as the Parade was kicked off with 4 North American AT 6's from the Condor Squadron out of Van Nuys that made several passes with some smoke trails to boot. A picture of Jerry's trike was in our local Country Journal, wonder why and we were awarded a trophy for "Conveyance or anything on wheels". We do need to modify the trophy though as it has a horse on it rather than a bike!! Participating in the parade was discussed last year but dismissed. One reason for that was getting sprayed with water. As it turns out, a paper sign goes a long way in detouring such antics, we were spared and went unscathed with nary a drop of water. Randy however, sensing some "eager to squirt" youths, decided to take one for the team. He jumped out of the golf cart and invited them to unload on him...and they did! Afterwards, most of us headed to La Cabana for lunch, totally empty when we got there and standing room only when we left. Later, it was off to Jan and Kens for snacks and a bite to eat. We had to leave but a few of the gang headed to the Jethawks stadium to watch the fireworks show! I hope we do it again next year, myself, I felt kinda honored to be there. Maybe we will have more participation! Our after gathering ride was to Newcombs ranch in an attempt to beat the heat. Didn't work to swell as the temp was 5400 ft! The up side was that there were very few people there and the ride was great! While often times you run into a bunch of clowns riding up there doing stupid things, we only encountered one rider that was a bit squirrely. There were 8 of us, Ken and Scotty on bikes, Jan and Kathy, me and Lucy on trikes with Bill and Juanita bringing up the rear by car. We had a great lunch, great service and because there was a small amount of us, we were all in on the same conversations. The ride home was also great, actually maybe a bit better as were given some cloud cover and a few light showers...just enough to make a mess of the bikes!!:) Till next time Russ Thome Ride Coordinator

7 Gold Angels Motorcycle Drill Team Aliens Live Among Us!! Mike Douglas is the newest member of the Gold Angels drill team. Though he doesn t perform on a Goldwing or ride between them, he is an integral part of the team. Mike, call sign ALF (short for Alien Life Form) created a position on the team where none had previously existed. ALF is the official photographer/videographer of the team. He attends every practice and performance capturing the event on both video and still photos. After processing the videos and photographs, ALF distributes them to each of the team members for review. It s very difficult to make corrections or improvements to the routine, if you can t see it from the outside. During the review of the videos we can see how the maneuvers were ridden and where corrections are needed or enhancements may be added to improve the spectator s (yes, that s you!) experience. Mike originally hails from New York, STATE, not the city where you walk the dawg. Mike spent 26 years, 1 month and 10 days in the Air Force, but who s counting? His riding career began back in 1986 on a 1985 Honda GL1200 Goldwing Limited Edition. Since then he has managed to rack up over 800,000 miles (45,000 miles on a Spyder) by riding in all 50 states, 10 Canadian Provinces, Mexico, Israel and New Zealand. When asked what his favorite ride would be, he replies My 2002 trip to Alaska and back. Riding thru Europe on his Spyder occupies the top slot of his Bucket List. In 2015 he was asked by Roger Rabbit Taylor to record the team s performance at the California District Rally in Bakersfield. That s all it took He was hooked!! Being a photographer and videographer, he knew the benefits of recording he events for later review and so began his career as our photographer/videographer. When asked why he does it, he ll say because it will only make us better as a team. Coming up with a call sign was a No Brainer. Just take a look at his motorcycle license plate (ALFZCAM), HAM radio callsign (KA6ALF) or his address (Alfdude@...). Then there s the stuffed ALF that rides on the back of his Spyder (and he has 14 more as backups). He brags about being a self-professing Alf a holic. Mike is such an important part of the team that we worked him (and ALF) into the opening portion of the performances. Keep a watchful eye out for him as he leads the team onto the field while proudly displaying the flags. Give him a shout out as he passes by. Roger Taylor

8 MEMBERS & THEIR BIKES This month s article is written by Scotty Engle My trip It was a nice morning on June 12. The 5 of us met at our church with our motorcycles and one will be driving his car the entire trip. This was the start our five glorious days of riding. We do this each year. Usually it s done in May but this time we did it June. We headed west on 138 and then met up with interstate 5 and headed north. I am not particularly fond of the stretch of interstate 5 from just north of the grapevine till the start of the farm lands. We stopped for lunch at the Harris ranch restaurant and resort. After lunch, we headed to Vacaville for the first stop of the night. We have dinner then we play cards until bed time. That fluctuates from night to night. The next morning we rise, have breakfast, loaded up bikes/car then head toward our next hotel stop which is in Arcata. This town is on the coast. On the way to Arcata, we had lunch at the salt fish house. Several of us ordered fish and chips. I ordered the small plate because I don t usually like breaded fish, but what I got was really good. In fact, I said to the group, I wish I had ordered the large plate. However, my pastor came to my rescue and blessed me with two of his pieces because he couldn t eat it all. Continuing on our way to Arcata, we rode thru the famous avenue of the giants. These are the famous redwoods. We spent a good amount of time here taking a lot of pictures and videos. I am the group photographer. They have a tree that has been routed out so they built a road thru it so people can drive thru the tree. The tree is still living. This whole area is stunningly beautiful. We then headed north east to Medford Oregon. So much gorgeous scenery, it s like being in paradise. Breathe taking views. We stopped in Medford for the night. The next morning, we headed to our next destination, Reno Nevada. Again, such awesome views. We reached Reno and spent the night. Got up for the last time of our trip, headed home, and boy was it a long trip home and as we reached near our destination. Scotty

12 Recipe of the Month Submitted by Carol Dykehouse Delores Weber s German Potato Salad Ingredients 4 c. potatoes, peeled, cooked, sliced (I don t always peel them) Bacon, fried, drained, crumbled (I use about ½ pound for this amount of potatoes) Onion (I used onion powder) In a pan leave 1-2 Tbsp bacon fat and add: 1 c. sugar 1 c. water ¾ c. vinegar Instructions Cook until mixture is boiling. Separately mix 1 ½ serving spoons corn starch with enough water to wet it. Add to mixture in pan and stir until thickened (you can make more of the cornstarch mixture and add it if you need to). Pour over potatoes, bacon, and onion and mix. May be served warm or cold. I also added a little celery salt, a little celery seed, and a little salt. You can season to taste. I wrote the instructions down as I watched Aunt Delores make this because she didn t use a recipe, so many of the measurements aren t exact.

22 Mike Ridgway Hello Gold Wing riders. My name is Mike from Chapter Q, and I am here to help if I can. During our trip to Wing Ding in Montana two of our Wings broke down. It cost one rider approx. $ the other about $ to get home. This really bothers me to no end! I went out and purchase a Motorcycle / Trike tow unit for my pickup truck. Now I am retired, so I have all the time in the world! I would like to offer to any Winger that breaks down and after using all of their AAA towing benefit s and any other tow services and they still are not home, CALL me and I will go get them FREE, just pay for my gasoline and buy me a hamburger. THANX Mike.
