INSIDE STORY HEADLINE CHAPTER DIRECTORS Hello everyone: I have had the the great opportunity to ride 1276 mi. with Mike Rand this past week, pls. read his great write up. Every time I ride the fine Motorcycle named " Goldwing", I marvel at and call it a machine running like a well oiled watch, I really enjoy so much. Just want to congratulate Sharon Riley on being diagnosed as cancer free this passed week, God has heard all our Prayers! Ask Sharon about her very pretty new car. Life is good and I want to wish everyone a happy safe 4th of July. Jim Albin: ACD Volume 35, Issue 7 2
Chapter CA-1V MEC News and Muse, July, 2018 The month of June went by so fast, it scared the daylights out of me. June did shape up to be a fun month. Our annual picnic at Lime Park in Hesperia on June 2nd was a memorable event. The weather was just great, the food was delicious and everyone seemed to have a good time. Thank you, Patrick, for your barbecue prowess. Thanks to all for making the picnic a success. On Saturday, June 9th some members of CA-1V enjoyed lunch at Alfredo's Italian Restaurant down the hill (and back). Our Taco Tuesday dinner on 6/12 was at Raul's #2 on Palmdale. If one taco is good, several are better. Our gathering at Maxwells on Sunday, 6/17, was well attended. Thanks to all of you. We really appreciate those donations for our grabbag/50/50. Our bowling night at the Victor Valley Bowl has proven to be a popular event. CA-1V members met at Cafe Rio for dinner and then headed over to the lanes on 6/20. On Saturday, June 30th, members will meet at Lowes at 7:30am to travel down the hill to Polly's Pies for breakfast. I always knew this group was a crusty bunch. Happy July 4th, everyone! Summer is upon us. Let's make this July a bang up month by taking advantage of the anticipated spectacular weather and more daylight to enjoy the high desert environs. On Tuesday, July 3rd the Tuesday group will meet for breakfast at the Outpost Cafe and you're invited. They may be strategizing on a ride for CA-1V's rally and need your ideas and input. Tuesday, July 10th Dinner at Rauls #2 at 6PM. Beans and rice are nice. Sunday, July 15th Meet us at Maxwells for our get-together. This is always an enjoyable venue for breakfast. Hope to see you there bright eyed and bushy tailed. Wednesday, July 18th Bowling at VV Bowl Shoes and bowling balls required. But first, please join us for dinner at LaCasita Cafe on Palmdale at 5:30pm. Saturday, July 21st CA-1S will hold its rally at the Channel Islands Yacht Club. Have a wonderful time for those of you who plan to go. Monday, July 23rd Mike and Maggie will host our Leadership meeting at their home at 7pm. All are invited. Tuesday, July 31st What better way to close out the month but to go to dinner at Nick's Pizza. Then, to top it off, it's on to Baskin-Robbins on Bear Valley Road near Lowes for their end-of-the-month specials. Ladies Thank you for making our weekly Thursday lunches so enjoyable. We look forward to seeing you soon. Please check your for restaurant location of the week. We meet at noon. I want to acknowledge birthdays and anniversaries for July and wish happy birthday and congratulations to the following CA-1V members: Happy Birthday to: Sharon Riley, July 3rd, Steve Hoffman, July 7th and James Brooks July 12th Happy Anniversary to: Stephen and Lisa Glass, July 3rd, Jim and Jan Albin, July 6th, Mike and Barri Critzman, July 8th James and Tanya Brooks, July 13th and Patrick and Sharon Riley, July 17th. Have a safe and happy July! Your MEC, Lisa Glass Volume 35, Issue 7 3

Over the pass As some of you may know, I m retired now. Well, one of my favorite rides is getting away from the southern California traffic and heat by heading up to Sherman Pass. So a discussion with the Tuesday bunch decided we would head out last Tuesday. We met at Phelan Mcd s and it ended up being Jim, Jan, Al, Pat, Dave and myself. We headed down Main street to 138 with Jim in the lead, we were supposed to go thru Lake LA but he must have been asleep at the handlebars because we slipped on past 165th and so we made the turn on 87th and headed all the way across the road to Ave E. At E we headed left and down to Sierra Highway where we joggled to Ave D and all the way out it to 90th St West. After about 10 miles of straight-a-ways, 90th becomes Tehachapi-Willow Springs Rd. The nice part about that is it also get crooked and allows the bikes to enjoyment of dancing through the curves, eventually it straightens up again and ends at Tehachapi Blvd. by now it was approaching 9 am and we were all grateful when Jim lead us into the Loves Truck stop for breakfast and a short break before gassing up for the next segment of our adventure. I was voted to lead the group on from here so I took us through town then down Old Highway 58 which is across the canyon and from the newer freeway version, it runs around behind the railroad track and gives everyone a chance to see the trains wind their way around the Tehachapi Loop. Unfortunately, there were no trains on that section of track so we slipped down to Keene and got on the freeway to the Caliente-Bodfish Rd. this road is usually a pleasure to ride but it turned into an adventure in freshly tarred and graveled road for the first 20 very crooked miles. Finally after passing Walker Basin Rd, we got to ride in a relaxed way until we took a short break in an Ice Cream shop in Lake Isabella. While discussing the adventure of the ride and enjoying our cones I learned that Pat was a bit nervous about the guard-rail-less sections of roads we had been on so far. I think I failed to mention that things might get a bit worse as the day went on. Soon we were back on the bikes and riding around the west side of the lake and through Kernville and up the river. I really enjoy the ride along the river the water is calming and most of the memories are pleasant. The temps were still on the down side of 80 so all told we found the river a wonderful distraction. Eventually we arrived at Sherman Pass Rd and we started the climb. Sherman Pass Rd leaves the Kern River at about 3800 foot elevation and over a very twisty climb it comes to a scenic vista at an elevation of 9200 ft. As we always do we stopped at the pass and using the information board showed Pat the only first timer the views of Mt Whitney and Olancha Peak the 2 highest peaks visible from the vista. The day was clear and we chatted with the other few visitors and relaxed there for about 15 minutes. As we got ready to leave I reminded everyone that we were on a high ridge for about 10 miles then we would start dropping down slowly and it was going to begin warming. After the ridgeline we found one very bad spot in the roadway it was in a shadowed area and wasn t detectable until you were on top of it. Unfortunately all of us hit it, this was a 8 inch deep double pothole and I hit it hard! This was the worst I ve hit in 20 or more years, the bikes backrest came slamming into my backbone and I had to ride in very bad pain for the next few hours. I took a couple Tylenol and that helped but honestly it took quite a while for the pain to subside. After passing through Kennedy Meadows you remain in lightly forested high country for another 10 miles then you begin a steep descent that drops away with no guard rails in 4 miles you lose about 5000 foot of elevation and you can see all the way to the bottom. By the time we d lost that 5000 of elevation we had 100 degree temps to contend with for the 100 miles of US 395 which was our final adventure. In the end we had ridden 382 miles. Gained and lost 6000 foot of elevation and enjoyed each other s company for 12 hours. Volume 35, Issue 7 7 Mike Rand
To Minden and Beyond.. As most of you may have heard and maybe not remembered, this coming Memorial Day the California District Convention will be held In Minden NV. I haven t heard if the Nevada Chapters will be joining us or not but I suspect if they hear about our group invading their state they may very well have a large presence at the convention. Last week a good friend and member of the Tuesday Bunch called me and said he was going to buy another bike because his Triumph Rocket is in the shop for an extended period of time and he wants to ride while he awaits its repair. We were supposed to ride to Carson City the day after I retired and then I would return the following day. Unfortunately the deal fell through that morning and he had to ride to Carson City with his wife in the car. Fortunately a couple days later he found and great deal on a used Victory Vision and rented a car and drove to Las Vegas to purchase the bike and ride it back to Carson City. After I heard aobut it I asked if he wanted me to ride up and ride back with him. He was elated that I would do so and when I told Jim my plans he decided to join me. So Friday morning Jim and I met up at the truck stop at Cactus and US 395 and headed for Carson City. Were on the road by 6:30 am and rode to Lone Pine where we pulled into McD s and had some hotcakes before heading on. After going through Independence my Fuel light came on and at 215 miles in Big Pines we gallons. Then got back on the bikes and headed north again. Bishop, then up over 8200 foot to Crowley lake, Lee Vining, and Bridgeport where progress nearly stopped. We soon learned we had 3 construction projects between Bridgeport and Topaz. And in all 3 cases that meant single lane pilot car lead slow progress but we timed it right and really didn t stop just went slow. Topaz being the State line we began to move a bit faster until we hit the outskirts to Gardnerville/Minden, and 25 mph traffic slowed us for 10 miles then 10 miles of 65 mph and we arrived at our hotel and AJ was standing outside to greet us. He was pleasantly surprised to see Jim and we discussed he pretty new ride, our trip and eventually went in to check in. At 2 Jim s friend Jerry showed up. He had ridden down on his Victory from Reno to say hi. We all chatted about rides and bikes and such until about 4 pm when Jerry left and we walked next door to the casino and enjoyed the buffet with AJ and his wife then back to the hotel to relax and sleep. Yesterday Morning Jim and I jumped back on the bikes and headed up to Virginia City, I d never been there and it had been 30 years for Jim we enjoyed the town and rode down 6 Mile Canyon Road before turning around and heading back to the Hotel. On the way back to the Hotel out gas low lights came on and we gassed up, this time my odometer read 245 mile and I only used gallons. As we loaded the bikes AJ filled his tank and soon we were heading south. As per Jerry s suggestion from the day before shortly before Topaz we hooked a left on Nevada 208, we followed this for about 10 miles then took a right on Nevada 338 southbound and then suddenly we were following the East Walker River back to Bridgeport. The Drive was much flatter and every bit as beautiful as 395 and we all felt like it was quicker. By mileage it was about 5 miles longer but it had little traffic and no construction so it really was quicker although longer and we would all recommend it. As we pulled into Bridgeport we turned left and found some parking across the street from the Jolly Burger Restaurant. If your heading up 395 and you didn t stop for lunch at Bodie Mikes BBQ in. Lee Vining. I recommend you stop at the Jolly Burger it was a very good experience. (cont. next page) Volume 35, Issue 7 8
Continued from previous page After Bridgeport we stopped at Bishop to put on our Cool Vests temps in the high 90 s soon went to 104, so we stopped in Lone Pine for water, and ice cream, re-wet the vests and soon we were stopping in Pearsonville and 4 Corners for vest re-wetting and about 730 pm we split for our individual homes. I pulled into the yard 880 miles after pulling out the previous day. We made only 3 gas stops along the way twice I exceeded 245 miles on a tank of gas. AJ was amazed the 2 of us would ride almost 900 miles to ride home with him, to us it was just a good reason to spend 2 days on the bike. In the end we had a great trip and with Tuesdays ride had nearly 1300 miles for the week. What a great way to begin my life in retirement. Mike Rand Volume 35, Issue 7 9
