INSIDE STORY HEADLINE CHAPTER DIRECTORS Hello chapter CA1-V The ride to Lancaster to Domingos for brunch with CA1-A was fun and the food was good. It is always nice to interact with other chapters to meet and enjoy their members. The corned beef and cabbage we had at Maxwells was top notch and the cookies that Kay made were scrumptious. Bikes at Mikes was very successful, 8 bikes were worked on and Barri made pulled pork and all the fixing for our empty stomachs. We had our gathering at Dennys on Main street which went over well so we are going try it one more time then decide if we want to change to Dennys or go back to Maxwells. We need to start to donate door prizes for the rally and also think about grand prizes. We would like to thank Chris Stagg for volunteering to become our new newsletter editor. Thanks Chris! Remember to always keep the shiny side up. Patrick & Sharon Riley Chapter directors CA1-V Volume 34, Issue 4 4 4
INSIDE STORY HEADLINE Chapter Educators Know your Limits, Know your Bike In Monday s Daily Press newspaper there was an article about a 79 year old Utah man who failed to negotiate a curve on his trike on Highway 18 near Lucerne Valley. He was taken to Saint Mary s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:29 PM. This unfortunate accident should serve to remind us to know your limits and ride accordingly. This accident brings back sad memories of our friend Jack Dake who failed to negotiate a curve a couple years ago and ended up dying in the hospital. The moral to this story is, know your limits and slow down before you exceed them. As we get older, we naturally have weaker eyesight and slower reflexes so we need to be careful! Throw in a few other factors like diabetes or other physical ailments, and it could be disastrous. If you feel dizzy or short of breath, stop and relax until you are feeling better! If you need to eat, take time to stop and eat something. In a group ride, do not feel pressured to keep up with the rest of the group if they are riding faster than you are comfortable. You can either outride or, if you have a CB, let the group know you re uncomfortable and ask them to slow down. On longer trips, take prescription medicines with you in case the weather turns and you need to spend the night somewhere. The other point I would like to make from this newspaper article is the man was from Utah. If you are riding on an unfamiliar road where you do not know what curves may be coming up, slow down and take it easy! Even on a familiar road conditions in a curve can change quickly: a car could have broken down or leaked oil or other fluid. We took a car trip with Mike and Maggie yesterday to Malibu for lunch. On the way there, we were going through a canyon, and saw lots of evidence of rocks that had been recently cleaned off the road. This happens a lot around here on mountain roads with twisties. When negotiating a curve if you can t see the road ahead, be alert for sand or rocks in the road around the bend. Ride safe! John and Lynda Baker, CA1V Chapter Educators Volume 34, Issue 4 5 5
District Directors Page The last of February and most of March found Bob & I very busy, deep in construction. There was a short break between rallies and events, so I decided to gut our master bath, removing wall to enlarge our entrance, and of course then the bedroom needed a make-over to match. New shower was tiled, floor tiled, new fixtures, lights, vanity refinished and new marble countertop with sink. Instead of helmet hair, I usually had plaster or sawdust hair. I even had green hair for St. Patty s day (a little painting gone messy). I m almost done, just waiting on glass for the shower and a few decorating items. Just in time for a wonderful combined ride with CA1-I and NV-A, Rally in the Valley, and 40 to Phoenix. Looks like riding time has come again. We took a break from construction and surprised CA1-L with a visit to their gathering. We enjoyed riding with them to Ojai through some gorgeous mountain roads, had a great lunch, and a nice ride home. Other than leaving home at 4:30AM, the day was wonderful all 14 hours of it. The combined ride of CA1-I and NV-A (Vegas Wings) was amazing 2 FUN filled days of riding, eating, laughing, and eating. We took a tour of the bottle farm, the Borax museum, an Aerospace museum (all very interesting), had a FUN lunch at 20 Mule Team Café, and enjoyed riding back roads in small groups. The dinner Saturday evening at Idle Spurs was fantastic, topped off with great prizes. A BIG THANKS to Kent Marscheck (NV-A) and Dan Morgan (CA-1I) for arranging this great inter-chapter event and thank you for inviting us. It is wonderful to see and hear of all the activity going on in California. It warms my heart to see chapters riding and having FUN together and all the combined chapter activity. For a mother, it is wonderful when you see your children playing together, enjoying each other s company, and supporting each other (especially as grown children). California chapters..you have done this Mama Bear proud. We couldn t be more excited. April is being ushered in with the Rally in the Valley, followed immediately by 40 to Phoenix. Bob & I will be there to welcome the riders from across the nation and Canada, as we have riders that come from Nova Scotia each year. Ending the month is CA1-A s rally, April 22 nd,and CA1-Q s rally the following weekend April 30th. Make sure you come out and support them. April also gives us the Easter holiday, a time for rejoicing. May you enjoy friends and family, egg hunts, jelly beans, and chocolate bunnies. Spring is a time of new life and reflection new friends, new rides, more opportunities for FUN. RIDE SAFE and LET S RIDE!
CA1-V CORNER NEWS AND MUSE Spring is a time of awakening. What better way to celebrate Spring's arrival than to get out and enjoy the sunny days and warmer temperatures. Nature is putting on a show! Trees and flowers are blooming, birds are singing.. outdoor activities are beckoning. Take a ride and enjoy the scenic beauty of the high desert as it comes to life. Have fun at every opportunity. Chapter V began to spread its Wings this month as temperatures climbed and days began to get longer. On March 6 th our Leadership meeting was hosted by Patrick and Sharon Riley. We all enjoyed meeting their newest addition to the family, their puppy, Pepper, a bundle of non-stop energy. Her two sisters, Coco and Lexi, seem to be taking her all in stride. Thanks, Patrick and Sharon, for a productive and fun evening. Sunday, March 12 th turned out to be a beautiful day for a ride to Los Dominguez Restaurant in Lancaster for brunch. Mike Rand lead the ride through ranch and farm country. On the way, we met up with several riders from Lancaster's Chapter A who joined us for brunch. We had a great turnout, enjoyed both the visit with A and the food. Hopefully, more multi-chapter events will occur in the near future. Our annual St. Patrick's Day dinner on March 17 th at Maxwell's in Apple Valley was over the top (of the rainbow)... a leprechaun's dream complete with green necklaces/chains for everyone. Our guests included Tom Harrer's brother and sister-in-law from up North and Patrick and Sharon Riley's daughter and son-in-law from down the hill. Kay Cummings baked some wonderful sugar cookies with green squiggles. Thanks so much, Kay. They went, well... like cookies. No doubt, Chapter V did the corned beef and cabbage justice. Thank you all for making the event most memorable. On Saturday, March 18 th, Mike and Barri Critzman hosted Mike's Bikes at their home in Victorville. Each year Mike invites members to bring their bikes to his garage for a lift. Seven bikes showed up, riders in tow. Mike's assistants included John Baker, Mike Rand, Patrick Riley, Steve Hoffman, Chris Russell, Chris Stagg and Stephen Glass. Most maintenance was routine (i.e., oil changes) with one exception. Lisa Glass's Honda 750 Shadow's front brakes were determined to be quite worn and they were replaced on the spot after Stephen Glass bought the parts locally. Thank you so much everyone for your support and concern. I will be breaking in the brakes and will be ready for Chapter A s Rally on April 22 nd. Cont. Volume 34, Issue 4 7
A special Thank You to Barri Critzman for the wonderful lunch she prepared. It was thoroughly enjoyed and it was great to also visit with Sharon Riley, MaryAnn Russell and Mike's sister, Marilyn. On Sunday, March 19 th we met at Denny's on Main Street in Hesperia to try the restaurant as a new venue for our monthly gathering. There is easy access to/from the 15 Freeway, which we hope will attract more visitors. Speaking of which... Bob and Nancy Clark from District came by and inducted Jim Albin as the new ACD. They also presented medallions to the IOY, Jim Albin, and COY, Patrick and Sharon Riley. Congratulations to all. Other visitors were Bob Hall from M, as well at Fast Eddie, a former V member. Attendees indicated that Denny's food and service were good. Patrick Riley stated that our April 23 rd gathering will be at Denny's, so that we can more fully evaluate the venue. On Saturday, March 25 th, Chapter V met at the Mountain Top Cafe (Rtes. 2 and 138) for breakfast. We had 14 hungry folks who all looked as if they were enjoying themselves. The restaurant atmosphere is both cozy and rustic. The Easter theme made it very festive. Thank you, Mike (Critzman) for recommending the Cafe. I'm looking forward to a fun-filled April with all of you. Happy Easter, everyone! Lisa Glass (Your MEC) Volume 34, Issue 4 8
