2 Up the River We wish to start this months newsletter out by thanking everyone. Being your chapter directors this past seven months has been an interesting experience and we look forward to many more experiences in the months a head. We appreciate all the support and encouragement that has come our way and we truly appreciate everything you are doing. It takes a team working together to make a chapter run smoothly. At the last planning meeting the question came up as to whether or not trips that were cancelled earlier in the year would be rescheduled. If there is a trip or place you would like to visit, please let us know. Even though the calendar has been planned through the end of the year it is not set in stone. There is always room to add events or replace one ride with another. We look forward to hearing from you with any ideas you may have. District Conference is quickly approaching. Many of us will be leaving Thursday morning, September 1st and heading towards Yosemite to work our way over to Mammoth Lakes. There will be various team events that we would like to see the chapter participate in so we will be asking you to join in the fun in the very near future. Just a few weeks after we return from the District Conference we will be hosting our own Harvest Run. Mary has been working very diligently on getting people to fill the various committees. If she as not gotten around to you please feel free to take her aside and let her know how you would like to help. I know she would appreciate it. Watch for events coming up in August such as dinner rides to Capitol Dawg in Sacramento, Velvet Grill Creamery in Lodi, Red Hawk Casino in Placerville, and Bert's Diner in Sheldon. Let's not forget a dessert ride to Rick's Dessert Diner in Sacramento on a very special day in our household. The Krows of CA2K have their Rally on August 6 th. There are all day rides planned to Alcatraz Island and Via Sattui BBQ in St. Helena. We hope to see many of you there. Ken King picked up the Wing Nut for losing Denny's while on a PGR mission. It was there and the it wasn't. That's okay, they ended up eating at Perko's. Give Ken a call at (916) and ask him the famous questions Do you have the Wing Nut on you?. Til next month, ride safe and ride often. From up the river, Rick and Marilyn

3 TRAVEL TIME CLIMB OUT OF THE BASMENT AND GO This summer is proving to be one of the best seasons ever for touring the west. Throughout most of the other parts of the country the weather has been hot, dry and uncomfortable. At the same time we have had some of the mildest summer temps in the California Central Valley that I can remember. Rocco and Bill Fox went to Wing Ding and sent back to those of us on their list, pictures and short stories of the travels and sights along their extended trip. Next time you see either of these guys ask them about the stops they made. As I type this some members are on a ride to Oregon with Rich James and I for one envy them. I still have to work once in a while and this week was one of those weeks. I look forward to pictures and stories from them when they return. Not all members of our group ride all of the time they can as with most of us we have other obligations at home with family, leaking sinks, crabgrass and other maladies. That is why you should try to set aside some time to go out on your bike for more than a morning or afternoon. Get out for a few days. Take the bike instead of the car on the next vacation. You will be amazed at how much different the world looks and smells when you are out there exposed to it. Invite a friend along for the company and someone to enjoy a meal or rest stop with. Throw a couple of changes of underwear, a swimsuit and sunblock and find a cheap motel with a pool in some backwater town and relax. Dodge a deer, avoid a pot hole, shimmy around a piece of truck tire and avoid the sand in the road and ride! I probably wont get to retire in my lifetime but the least I can do is find the time to get on my bike and go somewhere for a day or two and pretend I am retired. Come on along with me or call me up and see if I can get away for a day or two. You don't need to wait for someone else to plan your riding, plan and invite us along to a place you want to visit. Don't forget to register for the District Convention in Mammoth Lakes in September. The facilities and activities are fantastic and at a special rate as well. The ride to Mammoth is one of the great motorcycle rides in America and its in your backyard. If you can't come for the weekend ride over early for a day. It's worth it! Also please don t forget to register, volunteer services and attend the Chapter rally on October 1 st. Registration for both are on the Chapter website Check the calendar for other upcoming rides and events and if you want to be notified of rides and events sign up to meetup at Gotta go! Bob Harris oh yeah Nancy says HI!

4 DD Review, With the California Convention just 5 weeks away, I thought it would be good to share some excerpts from the GWRRA Leadership Training How to have FUN at a Rally. The following is provided to help you gain a better understanding of how to maximize your FUN while attending a rally or other GWRRA event. The main reason we all attend rallies is to have Fun and enjoy ourselves. What s fun for you might not necessarily be fun for someone else. You need to focus on YOU and what makes you happy. You make or break your own good time. Rally planners do their best to focus on Fun and enjoyment when planning events for the rally. They try to take everyone s wants and desires into consideration and then try to come up with a mix of activities/events, which will appeal to everyone. Each rally should be a unique experience. Most of us attend do so to spend time with friends, and to make new ones. We also go to try something new. One of the best ways to ensure your going to have a good time is to know what to expect at the Rally or Convention. Be sure to take some time in advance of the event to understand what is being offered. The more you know about an event, the better you can plan your day. Things to consider are the Facility, Banquets/Meals, Seminars, Bike Show, Light Parade, Rides & Poker Runs, Lodging, and Opening & Closing Ceremonies. Details about the California Convention in Mammoth can be found on the District Web Page at: Some things to consider when planning on attending a Rally or Convention include making a checklist so you won t forget important items like Rally Clothes, Medicines, Personal Conveniences, and Registrations Forms. Be sure send in your registrations in early. This helps the Rally planners have a better idea of how many guests to expect, and you can take advantage of early registration deals and give-a-ways, which help you save money. Plan your route and mode of transportation to take advantage of scenic views and to best avoid traffic congestion. When you finally arrive at the Rally and pick up your registration package, be sure to check out the Rally Schedule to Check Rally Schedule and note seminars/events you want to attend so you don t miss anything. DO YOUR OWN Thing (Divide and Conquer Hubby goes to the chrome vendor, Wife to the jewelry vendor. Make a time to meet later). Try to maintain your normal daily routine as much as possible at the rally (i.e. wake up and bed times). We re all creatures of habit and our days can start off on a good note or a bad note. Surround yourself with UP people, the kind of people that have fun no matter where they are. They are the ones that are always smiling, get the most hugs, and always seem to be the ones that win all the grand prizes. In summary, always remember that each Rally is a unique experience. Plan early, then to go out and have some fun. Ask yourself, are you the one that makes FUN happen? The following is GWRRA s RECIPE FOR FUN. Take a Gallon of Understanding Mix in a Quart of Planning/Pre-Planning Stir in 3 Cups of a Positive Attitude Yield A Bushel of Fun Servings UNLIMITED Hopefully this will help, we are really looking forward to seeing everyone soon. Until then, Hang on we re going for a Ride. Bill & Rene Johnson GWRRA California District Directors

5 RIDING GEAR FROM A RIDERS VIEW REVIEW OF MOTORCYCLE PRODUCTS FROM THE BASEMENT Chippewa Rally Motorcycle Boots. I have been looking for some true motorcycle boots that fit my needs as a rider and less than capable walker. A boot with support that would be comfortable, strong, made for riding and not have some motorcycle company name emblazoned all over it. If you know me I have lots of motorcycle boots. I have low top lace-ups that cover my ankle and have a thin sole, shifter reinforcement (so you wont wear out the top of the shoe) and are said to be made for summer weather. Both pair that I have are OK but are miserable to walk around in. I have thin skin on my feet and I feel every pebble I walk on an this type of shoe wouldn t do well if an eight hundred plus pound bike fell on them. I have two pair of all weather high top boots that I have had for a couple of years and they will do well in a frog choker and have a modicum of support for my insole and don t drop your bike on these either. Again these waterproof tall boots are not for long wear and the pattern on the sole wears out fairly quick (and I don t duck walk my bike or drag my feet to a stop). I expect them to last a couple of years or more or as long as the powers that be at home will allow them to steep in the corner after a weekend of wear. Boots are a very important part of the motorcycle wardrobe even more so than the type of gloves or weight of the pants you wear when you ride. This brings me to the Chippewa Rally Motorcycle boot. I had noticed these boots on line being sold next to real motor officer boots and knew that Chippewa has always been known for a good product. I checked the specs on the boot and looked at the type of sole and tread on the boot. All leather inner and outer, Vibram sole, steel toe and shifter protection. I found a few sources online and the best deal was from Stompers Boots a well know purveyor of leather boots in San Francisco. The price was more competitive than other sellers and it took two days to deliver them. The boot was taller that my others I have seen and did not use zippers or laces for the closer but used leather straps through buckle loops using Velcro hook and loop the upper calf closer is also hook and loop. Now this isn t a modified engineers boot or logging boot. This boot is closer to a police boot if anything. It has a real heal and makes my weight by height ratio better as it adds almost two inches to my frame. The boot is comfortable and since the special Vibram sole is not super thick it fits well between the peg and shifter. If you are looking for a boot that will last you a long long time and is unlike all the others in that it can be re-soled this may be the boot for you. Prices found from a pair (in SF) to (fox creek) I think you might find them a bit of a bite but these are great American Made boots that should last a long, long time. BOB HARRIS CA-C GWRRA
