I don t know how good of a job we will do, but we will try our best. It would be easier if our predecessors sucked at their job; but that s not the case. Del & Joanne and Larry & Sheree did such a great job. I hope we can do the same. To start, I m going to change a few things with the meeting. The member and guest drawing for $5 dollars will be changed to the following. Chapter Pride, any GWRRA member wearing either his or her vest or hat will receive a ticket along with any visitors. We re going to have 1 drawing for $ District likes to know how many motorcycles or trikes were at the meeting. There will be a place on the sign in sheet for this information. If you can think of anything that would make the meeting more enjoyable let me know. Sorry, I can t do anything about your luck with the 50/50, so don t ask. The summer trip-planning meeting is this month along with the road captain and group-riding seminar. We really need more road captains, step up and give it a try. In closing, I would like to thank my staff. With your help were going to have a fantastic year! Steve & Sandy Damico CA-1M CD 3
Val & Barbie Tait CA1M Assistant Chapter Directors Happy New Year! Along with the New Year, we are taking on new roles as Assistant Chapter Directors. As the Tour Director the monthly newsletter article focused on upcoming rides and events. As the ACD s we will take a closer look at where we went over the last month. The weather was rough in December and it kept us at home for several of the rides. Jerry put together a great Christmas Light ride again this year. Trying to find where the Christmas Lights are and then put together a ride is very difficult. This ride is turn after turn in neighborhoods that all start to look alike. Some of the turns come up quick, and trying to stay on route, keep track of stragglers, and point out the safety concerns is a huge responsibility. This is the one ride each year, that nobody really wants to lead, but everyone wants to go on. Thanks again to Jerry & Lois for taking the time to go out ahead of time and scout the lights and put together the ride. Another great outing was the Wingstuff open house. Wingstuff went above and beyond with the BBQ this year. This was much more than hamburgers & hotdogs, they had BBQ beef, & pork & Ribs. Wingstuff also gave away tons of gifts. This was a fun time for all and there were also many great deals. We are really looking forward to the coming year and working with Steve & Sandy to make this a fun year of riding. Newsletter Policy Chapter CA1M s newsletter is distributed free of charge to GWRRA members or GWRRA boosters who participate in the Chapter activities. The newsletter is also distributed free to all advertisers and certain motorcycle related businesses or interests. After four months of non-participation as determined by the Membership Chairman, Newsletter Editor or the Chapter Director you may be removed from the mailing list. You will remain off the mailing list until you participate again or you make other arraignments with the Newsletter Editor or the Chapter Director. Remember, the newsletter is what we make it. Please submit articles that you think will be interesting or informative to other Chapter members. The articles may be about your favorite ride, bike accessory, or just a funny story. All articles submitted may be edited at the discretion of the Newsletter Editor, depending on the space available. Controversial subject matter may not be submitted. Please submit your article by or typed letter to the Newsletter Editor by the 19th of the month to be in the next month s newsletter. Material in the newsletter may be reprinted without permission. Hard work spotlights the character of people: Some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don t turn up at all. Sam Ewing radio announcer and writer 28 California DD Review: Greetings California - Happy Here s wishing everyone a wonderful New Year full of great rides and many friendships. Now is the time to take stock in all the promises we made last January and make sure we don t make the same one s again this year. As you know, many chapters will be going through some Officer changes, so please be sure to go easy on em. Be sure to show them the same support you did their predecessors. The change of leadership is effective January 1st, so don t forget to thank them for stepping up. We will be issuing them their Oath of Office at the Officers Conference on the 15th, and we are honored they have agreed to make this commitment for their chapters. Speaking about the Officer s Conference, something new we are adding to the District Store will be a GWRRA-CA Challenge Coin. A Challenge Coin is coin bearing an organization s insignia and carried by its members. They are given to prove membership, and to enhance morale. I have taken the liberty to have a GWRRA California District Coin commissioned to honor our members. The Coins (shown here) will be available for sale at the District Officers Conference in January for $7.50 each, which is an incredible price considering a local Harley club sells theirs for around $25.00 each. To my knowledge, we will be the 1st state to have one, but I m sure more will follow once they see these. If anyone is interested in owning one, please ask your Chapter Directors to pick some up at the Officer s Conference. Continued on Pg. 6 5
California DD Review Continued from pg. 5 They are 1.5 in diameter (about the size of a silver dollar) and very high quality. If you want to see one, just ask any District Staff member to show you theirs. In the military, when someone taps their coin at a bar to Challenge someone they know has a coin, if the person being challenged doesn t present theirs, they have to buy a round of drinks. If the person being challenged does have it, and taps back, then the challenger must buy. A fun spin on this in GWRRA would be to do it at Ice Cream parlors, or maybe Starbuck s. On to some new changes within GWRRA. Effective January 1st, 2011, GWRRA has introduced their new vision of the leadership Core Team concept. Along those lines, Treasurer s, and Membership Enhancement Coordinators will now join the Chapter Directors, Educators, and Leadership Trainers as Officers within GWRRA. I will provide more on this later as the details are made available, but please congratulate our newest Officers. On a personal note, for the past few weeks I have been performing some major maintenance on our wing NAPATOY (aka Nana & Papa s Toy) to get ready for the 2011 riding season. She now has new tires, brakes, final drive assembly, the triple tree head bearing has serviced, and the rear suspension overhauled by Traxxion, just to mention a few. She should be ready to ride as soon as the weather breaks, but just to be sure I changed the oil, plugged in the battery tender, and put her to bed with a full tank of gas treated with Stabil. This should keep her content for a couple weeks or at least until the sun pops out again. So yes, even your DD performs preventative maintenance (PM) on his wing during the offseason to ensure a safe ride. My apologies for not being politically correct and referring to my wing as her or she, but what else would you call a machine that you have so much riding on. She s very dependable. Highlights of the December 2010 Meeting Prepared by Sue Blackburn for Pam English There were 46 members at the meeting and no guests. $5 member winner was Rose Blackburn ANNOUNCEMENTS Larry and Sheree thanked everyone for their support for the chapter and making their reign as chapter directors so successful. Our new chapter directors will be Steve and Sandy Damico, with Larry (Val) and Barb Tait as assistant directiors. Chocolate cake winner (for Ride for Kids) was Del Britton. There are new license plate frames (cow design) available in the store. Reminder: if you need something from the store contact Cheryl by or phone. Chapter M did excellent at the annual Wing Stuff sale. We took away many door prizes. Matt Burns brought in his new chrome rims. There is a place in Riverside that will chrome rims for an excellent price. RIDER EDUCATION Bob Bernier thanked everyone for their support through his first year as chapter educator. He did an outstanding job and will be returning next year. He reminded us of the importance of carrying a first aid kit on the bikes. A homemade kit is more practical than a store bought one. 7 Continued from pg. 25 And you know, there arose such a clatter of "The Herd". On Saturday (December 18) rains swamped "The Herd" heading to the Long Beach Bike Show. Only one of hearty stock partook of this wet opportunity to see all makes of bikes under the clouds over the Queen Mary. The rain also swamped those heading to the Loma Linda University Children s Hospital Toy Run on Sunday (December 19). Everyone enjoyed the opportunity, even if it was by car, to contribute toys to the children in the hospital that are having a rough Christmas this year. Only about 10 bikes rode from the Harley Dealer, to the hospital where the children were waiting in their wheelchairs & hospital beds to see hundreds of motorcycles ride in to deliver the toys. Unfortunately, the ride was mostly rained out and our only wishes could be And to all a good night, as we close out 2010 on a charitable note with CA1M as one of the best GWRRA Chapters "in the world". With the New Year here, however, it's time to dust off the bike, kick the tcloks, and start the stampede to our passion of riding motorcycles. January 1, we will ring in the New Year with our cow bells and a new Chapter Director taking us on a Surprise Ride on New Year s Day as we get CA1M off on another great year of safe motorcycle riding. January 1 is the perfect time for making resolutions to get back out with your friends to RIDE and RIDE SAFELY. We are committed to continue the reputation of "The Herd" as the funest and bestest "in the world". Be sure to check the calendar in the newsletter or on our web site for upcoming rides and events. A Group and Road Captain Training, and Summer Trip Planning Meeting on the 8th will prepare additional volunteers for leading rides and get everyone in on the planning for the Summer Trip to Knoxville and points east. I encourage everyone to attend this meeting. Everyone should have input on where we go, how we get there, and what sights we see along the way. This is your vacation; let s make it fun and memorable. Not everyone can make the complete trip, but you may be able to participate in a portion of the trip. We also need Road Captains to lead local rides, while the hard cases are on the long distance trips. The January Chapter Meeting on the 9th will be followed by a planning meeting at Flo's on the 10th. An Officer's meeting will be held in Bakersfield from the 14th through the 16th. If any members not attending the Officer's training would like to schedule and lead a ride, please let me know. Jerry Cowan will lead a desert ride on January 22. Chapter visits to CA1K (Canoga Park), CA1Z (Temecula), CA1A ( Antelope Valley), CA1R (Irvine), and CA1I (Covina) are scheduled the next Sunday, following Saturday (2), and next two Sundays, respectively. Looking further out into February, start planning now for a Presidents weekend February 17 to 21 tour. This should be a great trip with lots of riding and sightseeing. The itinerary includes rounding up "The Herd" in Needles, hiding in Grand Canyon Caverns, and shipping out on the Cottonwood, AZ train to Sedona, and then stampeding home. As the new Tour Director, I need everyone to volunteer to help to keep the rides fresh and exciting. No one wants to go to the same places year after year. Having more people lead or provide input keeps the "Herd" the funest and bestest "in the world". If you have an idea of someplace to go or something to do, please let me know. I attended my first planning meeting at Flo's in December. I discovered that there is a lot of volunteering that goes on, by a very dedicated group of members, that not only finds us places to ride, but makes our rides interesting and fun. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Val and Barb for all their hard work and humor this last year, as tour directors. A special thank you, also, to all the other members that volunteered to make the rides in 2010 enjoyable, entertaining, and worthy of "The Herds" distinction of having many of the bests "in the world". I have some well worn shoes to fill and miles to go before we sleep, but with all members volunteering and participating, I might have a chance at making this year even more fun and fulfilling, for all members, than If what I am doing as tour director is not what you like, feel free to let me know and we will incorporate your ideas. The month of December was filled with rain which made it excusable to take a break from riding the bikes to enjoy the holiday season with family and friends. "The Herd" of motorcycle family and friends gathered for our annual Christmas Party on December 5 at Hidden Valley Golf Club. Everyone enjoyed the delicious tri-tip and chicken dinner, gift exchange hilarity, and expressions of appreciation and thanks to the retiring officers. On the next Saturday (December 11), 15 bikes made our annual trip to WingStuff s Christmas Sale. Besides bringing gifts for Marine Toys for Tots, many had the opportunity to win or do some Christmas shopping for that hard to please person on their list. The demo rides on three wheelers (Stallion with a steering wheel) stirred up a lot of interest for herding cows and there were some new pieces of chrome, safety gear, and new clothing to tempt all those in a shopping mode. Thanks to Dee and Don and WingStuff for the fantastic barbeque, great prizes, and opportunity to see our fellow Chapter friends and acquaintances. The Christmas Light parade was held the evening after our Chapter Meeting (Dec 12). The Christmas light parade was led by the best expert riders "in the world", Jerry and Lois Cowan. They found a nighttime route that dazzled all the elves that followed along on bikes and in cars with a holiday festival of lights all the way to Santa's workshop (Del and Joanne's Clubhouse), where they shared a smorgasbord of Christmas cookies and 25 treats.
Rider Education Bob Bernier C. E. Jerry Cobra Cowan A.C.E. Steve Bodden A.C.E. Rider Education Happy New Year It s hard to believe how fast 2010 flew by. The years just seem to go by faster and faster. The New Year is the time for starting fresh, with new goals, new ideas, and new plans. We make our New Years Resolutions full of good intentions and ambitious promises. I ve been thinking about some of my plans for the coming year, and those things that I would like to change and/or do better. I believe that New Years Resolutions are a good thing. They give us the opportunity to start off the New Year with optimism, and a commitment to goals for improving ourselves or our situations. Like many of you, I have had many of these resolutions, many or most of them broken within a short period of time. But some.some of them do stick. This year I am making some personal resolutions and some chapter resolutions. It will be interesting to visit this article next year at this time to see how much of my goal I ve been able to keep. 1) I want to offer several CPR classes during the course of the year. CPR is something that I am passionate about. Lives are saved everyday because someone performed this simple procedure on a person, usually a close friend or family member. Whether you are in the levels program, or not, everyone should know CPR. The guidelines change from time to time, so you need to keep current. 2) I want to offer several of the riding seminars; group riding, ride captain, co-rider. I want to provide every chapter member with the opportunity to participate in these worthwhile classes. 24 Continued on pg. 10 9
Rider Education Continued from pg. 9 3) I want to ride more often with the group. This past year, I have let life get in the way of doing some of the things that I would prefer to do. I also plan to lead some rides. We have new Tour Directors, and I hope that everyone will give the support that will be needed to tackle this difficult and important function of the chapter. 4) I m going to change my picture for this monthly article, and I want to find a new slogan to end the article, but I want to keep the same basic style and format. I want to continue to provide you with informative and pertinent information that will help us to be better and safer riders. Of course, I will publish reminders on the basics, T-CLOC s, weather, riding gear, group riding; but I also want to inject some new topics, and keep us up to date with the latest and greatest. Any suggestions you might have are always welcome. 5) I want to encourage everyone to participate in the levels program. This is the foundation that the Rider Education Program is based on. It is a simple and effective program that helps us to become safer and more skillful riders. I intend to become more active in promoting the program, and more timely and responsive in the paperwork and follow up side of the program. In closing, I would like to thank the membership for all of the support and encouragement that you have given me this first year. I am looking forward to 2011 with renewed enthusiasm and commitment in helping us all to: JANUARY BIRTHDAY B Rose Blackburn 3 B Ray Zigiari 20 B Leanne Gorman 8 B Joannie Britton 24 B Kim Ridgeway 10 B Mike Luckinbill 26 B Dee Ginter 17 B Guy MacKnight 27 B Larry Williams 19 B JANUARY ANNIVERSARY A Dean & Lou Olson 22 A A A A A Minimize our Risks and Maximize our Fun, through Preparation, Practice and Knowledge.
