We have such a good group of nice people to ride and socialize with. Everybody brings to the chapter a little of themselves and when you put it all together we have a family. You should all feel proud to be part of this group of misfits we call CA-1M. There s always somebody willing to volunteer to help with what ever needs to be done. Look around at the next meeting and see how many members are helping out. You can look at the newsletter and see how many members have volunteered to take a staff position. Our rally is just a few months away and I know the support from the chapter will be 110%. I know we will have another great rally. GWRRA s motto is Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. The fun is easy with this group. Larry Tegel & Jerry Cowen give us the knowledge to be safe. They both have spent a lot of their time taking classes and unlike other chapters we have our own First Aide / CPR Instructor and ARC Instructor. Jerry s going to have another ARC class this month. That will be 3 months in a row and that s an all day commitment to teach a ARC class. If you re not involved in the Rider Ed program please consider it. Now, hopefully, I ve gotten you all to think about how lucky you are to be part of the best GWRRA Chapter. Steve & Sandy Damico CA-1M CD 3 3

Those ponderings aside, CA-1I hosted an absolutely fabulous event in Covina last month to kick off our riding year. The Gold Angels performed again and this year s routine is even more intricate than in previous years. We look forward to the Region Convention in St. George, Utah over the Memorial Day weekend when the Gold Angels will perform yet another special show. At the end of the convention, the results of the Chapter of the Year were announced with the Wolf Pack of CA-2W coming in second place and the CA-1Z Zebras taking top honors. The Zebras will go on to compete against the Region s other District winners and will try to keep the honors in California. As you read this article CA-1C is actually about to hold their annual event. It is amazing to see what a small group of dedicated people can pull off as this is their 3 rd year. When larger chapters complain to me that their chapters lack the resources to do the things we ask of them, I tell them to compare their resources to CA-1C and then get back to me (talk about a conversation stopper). Anyways, kudos to CA-1C for we know you did another great job! CA-1R is holding their annual Rally in the Valley in beautiful Las Vegas on the 15 th, and 16 th, of this month. Their theme is aviation related and boasts several great travel opportunities as grand prizes. Most importantly, did I mention it s in Vegas? We have already made our reservations and hope to see you there. Continued on Pg. 6 5

6 Christmas in March Continued from pg.5 On a disappointing note, I am sad to announce the official closing of chapter CA-1N in Oceanside. For the past several years, their efforts to recruit replacements for their key officers was met with less than enthusiasm and, eventually, everyone that was willing to hold office had already done so. GWRRA appreciates all of the hard work the members of CA-1N have put in over the last 30 years and no one will soon forget all of the good they did with the Toys for Tots program. If not for all of their efforts, there are many southern California children that would have gone without presents on Christmas morning. At the January Officer s Conference in Bakersfield, we announced that this year s California District Convention would be held at the Holiday Inn in Visalia over Labor Day weekend. Rooms start at $89 and the response from those in attendance was very positive. Well, the officers must have done a great job in sharing the news because the hotel has 259 rooms and as of two weeks ago, we were told that there were 146 rooms still available under our contracted rate. By the way, that rate is good for both king rooms as well as rooms with 2 queen beds so if money is tight this year, think about splitting costs with your friends. The hotel is pet friendly and has agreed to waive the $25/night pet fee for us. In addition to the usual goings on, this year s convention is being held at the gateway to King s Canyon National Park (think Mt. Whitney) and to Sequoia National Park (think of a National Park with Sequoia trees). We will supply you with more details as the time grows closer, but based upon previous years pre-registration rate, we are on track for over 500 attendees. There are several other hotels in the area, but if you want to stay where the convention is being held, you might think about making your reservations sooner rather than later. For all the contact and registration information, go to Until next month, ride well and ride often. -Vincent and Pamela Puterbaugh Highlights of the February 2013 Meeting by Lois Cowan Members 54 Guest 9 Bikes 11 Trikes 2 50/50 Sally Randall. and John R. Becki Bodden announced she will be organizing the information for the Chapter of the year. We need to document all our activities with attendance and pictures. So all the ride leaders will need to give her all needed information. This year the Chapter will be presenting a $25 gas card to members that go on the rides during the month. One ticket will be given for all rides you attend and if you lead the ride you get two tickets. These tickets will be drawn at the next monthly meeting. Barb Tait passed out bracelets in memory of Val Tait, since the Chapter is a close knit family. She appreciates all that we did for her and Val. Lois Cowan passed out Emergency Cards to be filled out and kept in your bike. She was given the covers from Law Tigers. If you have labels, print one out and identify on the cover that this is emergency medical information. Make sure you have family contact phone numbers. Or let me know now, and I will schedule you or your route for a ride. We will discuss Chapter Business and plan the rides for the upcoming months. There has been some interest in Region and Wing Ding rides, so let us know if you are interested, where you would like to visit, or come to the meeting and make a suggestion. Check out the 2013 photos on the website, join us at the rides and rallies, and meet us on our rides for even more fun, safety, knowledge, new memberships, and motorist awareness in

9 Continued from pg. 23 win the 50/50 (wonder which tickets he held???) and Mike won a set of tires; Luck-en-bil that is. The other Mike Grady didn t win nothing; cause he s got a trike. The ride up into the mountains was frosted and snowed out so the loop through the twisty foothills to the south was just as fun. I got lost on purpose on the twisty section and had to ride it twice; at least that s my story. The oldest rally in CA and was a lot of fun again this year! Speaking of old, Mike told us on the Death Valley Ride that he had the following picture taken in 1942, that s why he rides a trike today. March 10th is the regularly scheduled Monthly Gathering of the Herd at the American Legion in Redlands ( I-10, Tennessee exit then immediate East to 814 West Colton Avenue). Come on out and enjoy a great breakfast with some OJ and coffee, visit with new friends, discuss the latest GWRRA and CA1M news and views, win prizes, and take an exciting ride with Rich Huizenga wherever he is going, cause he hasn t led a ride in sooooooo long he forgot to tell us. 10 Rider Education Larry Tegel C. E. Jerry Cobra Cowan A.C.E. Rider Education This article was in our local Press-Enterprise and it applies to our Goldwings towing our trailers and RV towing (Motorhome towing a car, truck towing a travel trailer or 5 th wheel). It is nice to be reminded every once in a while. It is a lot better than being reminded the hard waywith red and blue lights in your mirrors! Trucks in the middle lane??? Question: Is it legal for big-rig trucks to cruise along in the middle lane of a freeway that has three lanes going in each direction? Answer: For a six-lane (three lanes in each direction, but excluding any car-pool lanes) highway, a truck or truck tractor with at least three axles must drive in the rightmost lane-except the middle lane may be used when passing a slower-moving vehicle, when making a left or right turn, when entering/exiting the highway or when required to use another lane in order to continue his/her intended route. It's explained in both sections and of the California Vehicle Code. As noted in section 22406, this law also applies to school buses, vehicles transporting explosives, farm-labor vehicles, trailer buses and vehicles towed by passenger vehicle or bus. After passing a vehicle, the truck is required to resume life at 55 in the slow lane as soon as it's safe or practical. Continued from pg. 22 We needed our heated gear for the mountain passes and shirt sleeves for the afternoon valleys. We didn t find many snow banks and Wendy would not make a sand angel in the white dirt. The margaritas were cold, the casino was smoky, the food was bad, the whore houses were closed, but the rooms were not bed buggy, the rides were great, and most of the company was friendly...the juries still out on the Harley guy but if he joins then he ll fit in well with the herd and it ll be okay. We enjoyed his company even if he is a policeman with a beautiful Harley. We need all your ideas to get the herd s Milk Run Rally planned for May so we will meet at the Club House on March 3 rd. Bring all your good ideas and helping hands to make this the best Milk Run or Mad Cow Dash to date. The CA1I Rally on February 9 th at Bert s Motorcycle Mega Mall in Covina was a good time with the herd walking away with lots of prizes. The big winners were Jim Back s friend that held his tickets to Continued on pg Continued on pg.24 23

11 Continued from pg. 21 The restaurants chosen by the leaders are time tested and guaranteed quality or quantity or both. March pie rides will be lead by Cuca Bodden, Hickory Joe Damico, Rich China Garden Blackburn, and Spunky Steer Luckinbill. Matt will lead us off this month s rally rides with a ride to CA1C s Rally in Palm Springs on March 2 nd. Steve Bodden will make sure that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, because he will lead a Vegas overnighter with Chapter CA1R on Saturday the 16 th. He will have to hurry you all home on Saint Patrick s Day Sunday to meet up with Rich B at CA1V s Chapter Visit on the 17 th. You can have a full weekend of enjoying your bike, reminiscing with old friends, seeing the lights of Vegas and the historic roads of Apple Valley. What a wonderful time of year for enjoying the desert warmth while the rest of the country melts out of the snow banks. Motorcycling doesn t get any better than this and this is why we live in the sunshine state. Continued from pg. 10 Also, big-rig drivers often will move left one lane from the slow lane when near highway on-ramps. This is because car traffic, when entering the highway often will cut in right in front and expect the big-rig to react to them. Rigs take much more time to slow or stop. If the big-rig driver hangs out in the middle lane of a three lane road too long, he/she could be cited. This is generally enforced vigorously. Some big-rig drivers do violate this law by hanging out in the middle lane because they tire of having to move back and forth. Big-rigs that do linger in the middle lane can cause congestion because they're restricted to 55 mph-and that could be mph slower than the flow of traffic in that middle lane. Note-on a highway with four or more lanes in each direction, big-rigs and the other referenced vehicles are permitted to cruise along at 55 indefinitely in either the right lane or the lane adjacent to it. But they can't use any other lanes (#1 or #2 of 4 lanes), even if slower traffic is looming ahead. That is also explained in section #21655 and #22348 of the Vehicle Code. This also applies to our motorcycles towing our trailers and if you have a travel trailer, 5 th wheel or a motor home with a tow vehicle behind it. Just something to keep in mind the next time you are out on the road. Rich Blackburn drug Sue, and 14 others, Norm and Greta Barnard, Ed and Melanie Pelczar, Paul Boucher and Wendy Gae, Gary and Shirley Blackburn, Mike Grady, John Somma and his friend, Arnold, Bill and Barb Lindsey, and Matt Burns and Mattie, into and out of the Valley of Death on the 15th through the 18th. We stayed in Beatty with the donkeys, visited most of the sites in the valley, including Scotty s Castle, Artist s Pallet, Furnace Creek, Panamint, Badwater, Rhyolite ghost town, Stovepipe Wells, and Dante s Point. I had about 1,300 miles of smiles on the bike by the time I got home Monday afternoon. Continued on pg Be safe out there. Larry Tegel CA1M Chapter Educator 11

CA1M already started its spring riding season with a great trip led by Rich Blackburn to Death Valley (DVR) on February 15. Three ARC classes, led by Jerry Cowan and Larry Tegel helped us get tuned up for the rally and riding season, including our own Milk Run in May and Team Challenges at District and Region. The 3 rd ARC will be on March 9. Many of you don t ride with us any more, but this is a volunteer organization, and it would be great to have you lend your years of riding and rallying experience to our Milk Run Planning Meeting on March 3 rd at the club house. If he didn t speak for two years, the following year he could speak two words and so on. Those were the terms of his spell. One day, he fell in love with a beautiful maiden. He refrained from speaking for two whole years so he could call her my darling. But then he wanted to tell her he loved her, so he waited three more years. At the end of those five years, he wanted to ask her to marry him, so he waited another four years. Finally, as the ninth year of silence ended, he visited the maiden and fell on one knee.
