Barbara Tait CA1M Assistant Chapter Director Cowbells ring...are you listening? Wing stuff ride... chrome is glistening, we frolic and play the Goldwing way.. riding in the winter wonder land! December is here, so hang on and let the fun begin! We will start with our Herd family Christmas party this Saturday at the San Bernardino Golf club. Prime Rib or Chicken will begin the feast for the evening along with a DVD show of some of the highlights of the year! The DVD is always great for remembering good times and a lot of laughs. If your looking for a gift for that hard to buy person, Street Masters is a great gift and provides fun and safety all in one! Walton Folton and Nancy Foote, owners of Street Masters had a special event for Spyders. Some of us attended on November 2, I took the class to get better riding skills plus improve my handling in the corners. It was a great experience! Co-riders benefit as well. Vince Puterbaugh our District Director, Fred and Cheri, and Catherine Siglow were also on staff to help in the training. 5 Highlights of the November 2013 Meeting by Sandy Damico 48 members 2 GWRRA guests 13 bikes 2 trikes 50/50... Del & Otis Chapter Pride...Greta, who drew her own ticket! Good job Greta! Chapter Charity...Don & Dee. A red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. ANNOUNCEMENTS Reminder about the Christmas Party, Saturday, December, cocktails. Norm got his Masters. Congratulations Norm!! Presentation- Judy presented the Lindsey's with their new underwear set. STORE Continued from pg. 4 Fred & Cheri Rau led us into Willow Springs With all the rides, meetings, and fun times with our "Herd" family I have truly felt the true meaning of family and friendship to the fullest! Go see the Christmas lights with your family and ride with us when Jerry leads the Christmas lights ride. Even if you're in a car, come join us. I will probably be in my car, because I currently don't have my bike in my possession. But, I'm still planning on going. Jerry always seems to find the best light tour around! Some of our most resent memories have been fun as well. Bob McFall stepped up and became a ride leader. Bob led his first ride after the meeting in November. We had a total of fourteen bikes head out for a afternoon of fun. Bob lead us thru the back roads of Hemet over to Mt. Palomar. Cecil asked if anyone was interested in the cow print fleece scarves to let her know. She will be making them and they will sell for $5.00 each. Rider Ed Larry Tegel talked about the levels program. If you have any questions, just ask him. It is also on available on our website. Raffle Barb Tait, Ron & Dianne, Greta Barnard, Danny Hoeft, Del Britton, Dean Olson, Steve Damico, Arizona-Bob, Bob Mcfall, Cecil Luckinbill, Melanie Pelczar, Bill Lindsey, Fred Rau, Sheree Tegel. 28 Norm had fun trying to make the deck sway with all of us on it. Those of us who were afraid of heights scurried back to the safe hard packed ground We loaded back up and headed for a little place in the woods for lunch. The food was a new experience for many of the cow family and was literally herd friendly. It was a vegetarian restaurant! But some didn't realize it was vegetarian until we headed back down the mountain. back of their wing she was laughing so hard. 5

Continued from pg. 5 "It had beans and carrots in it what's up with that he commented." Cheryl Huizenga almost fell off the back of their wing she was laughing so hard. That's when we told him it was vegetarian. Another great memory to add to our year! I Great job Bob! We look forward to doing more rides that you lead in the future, CPR at the Tegel s was very informative and fun all at the same time. Nine of us attended Larry's class and the day was over before we knew it! If you need to take your CPR class, Larry is the man! Great job, Larry! And, thank you, Sheree for being such a great hostess. All of you have been awesome in making my kids and I feel so much brighter and we felt the love you all extended to us. I'm sure Val (my Larry) is smiling down at all of you and is proud at how all of you took us under your wings to help us thru this year. With that being said I hope that all of you take time for your loved ones this Holiday Season. Slow down and experience the important parts of your lives. As Dee Ginter pointed out in her story last month, "The Slow Dance". So don't take life for granted. Things can change in a second so we all need to enjoy life, your family, and friends to the fullest while we can, "life is not a race, slow down and enjoy it." Work will always be there, house cleaning will never end, and there will always be something trying to pull those precious moments away. Grab hold of them and enjoy them! Aubrie and Val on the beach were she goes to school now at the Monterey Bay Academy. This is Aubrie s favorite photo. Continued on pg. 7 6 Continued from pg. 26 Many folks come and go to gatherings so why did this encounter with this lady keep popping up in my head? The answer was simple. 12 years ago I stood in the exact spot she described. Her words about GWRRA could have been a recording of what I said to my husband, including the well they dress funny leather and all part. I felt so strongly about those motorcycle folks that I also stated that one half of this couple wasn t going back in there where strangers hugged on me! (Never guess which half right??) It wasn t until I met this lady that I realized what we would have missed had we not gone back and Stayed A Spell with GWRRA. (Our name was on a very persistent phone tree caller s list, so yes, phone trees work.) We would have missed jokesters and serious folks, folks we laugh with and folks with whom we cry. We would have missed riding over the river, and through the woods where snow lay on the ground, as well as desert flowers and beautiful distant rainbows. Our traditional New Years Day ride as well as long journeys through country vineyards, pie rides, and buffet dinner runs would be but a few of the good times we would have missed! Had we not stayed in GWRRA we would have never shared breathless early sunrises as well as beautiful California sunsets with these different folks. It was all the folks, the housekeepers, writers, storeowners, retired bus drivers, hairdressers, real estate agents, airline employees, it was all those folks, those well you know folks in leather and all folks, and all they bring to our family that we would have missed had we not Stayed A Spell and gotten to know them. So folks yes all of us well... you know folks... folks who wear leather and all folks, it is up to us to let visitors know what they will miss. Make them welcome, ask them to Come On In and Stay A Spell! Pam Ferris CA1"L 27

Invite a Visitor to Come On In and Stay A Spell! Membership can be a challenge to each chapter. Ever wonder why some new visitors only attend one gathering, never to be heard from again? Read on. You will better understand that if they don t, Come on in and Stay A Spell they won t know what they are missing: Recently I met someone that looked vaguely familiar. After a bit of time passed I thought that I knew her from GWRRA gatherings. When I ask if that was where I remembered meeting her, she said, yes, they had gone to one of the gatherings and not that she was better than all those folks, but well, you know they wear those leather clothes, and they are so different you know, some of the folks there were... well, you know. She was sure that the people there were nice and she acknowledged that all kinds of people rode bikes. People there had honorable professions, but well; you know they are so different; after all they dress funny that leather stuff and all. I explained that the leather stuff, and all was a matter of safety and I for one have become a much better auto driver after attending education seminars with GWRRA. She said she understood, but well, you know. Realizing that GWRRA isn t for everyone, we exchanged a few more pleasantries and went our separate ways. She was right about one thing. GWRRA folks are a diverse group of people. During a chapter gathering I ask members a simple question. What do you do for a living? I learned that we have medical professionals, housekeepers, writers, builder of satellite engines and those that track them. There are also airline industry employees, store owners, artists, law enforcement officers, retired bus drivers, prison guards, and computer geeks. Retired military, lawyers, waste management workers, folks who work in nuke plants, welders, plumbers, and defense contractors were there also. We had 97 people at this gathering so you can guess that the list was quite long. I got the answers that confirmed what I already knew. We at GWRRA are indeed a diverse group of people! Continued on pg Continued from pg.6 My kids best memories they have of their dad are the memories he made with them, and they treasure those memories dearly. Now I am so glad that he took the time to make those memories for us. Same with friends, friends are also our family! Take a breath, stop to enjoy the moment, drink a cup of hot chocolate with your loved ones; laugh, love and live. So now we need to make some more great memories for Please give us your thoughts and ideas for more fun things to do together. (Cheryl Huizenga having fun cooking on Thanksgiving.) If you would like to lead a ride even better! As many of you know I have done two now and the first one is the scariest at least it was for me. But it's all fun, so, let's go ride! Also, if any of you would like to do a job on our Herd staff let us know. It's always great to have fresh ideas and enthusiasm. We would love to have your help. Here's to the "Herd" for the New Year, and fun times to be made together! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all! Barb Assistant Chapter CD "Mad cow on the run" "Don't stop Believing" 7

Grandmother A 5-year-old boy went to visit his grandmother one day. Playing with his toys in her bedroom while grandma was dusting, he looked up and said, "Grandma, how come you don't have a boyfriend now that Grandpa went to heaven?" Grandma replied, "Honey, my TV is my boyfriend. I can sit in my bedroom and watch it all day long. The religious programs make me feel good and the comedies make me laugh. I'm happy with my TV as my boyfriend." Grandma turned on the TV, and the reception was terrible. She started adjusting the knobs, trying to get the picture in focus. Frustrated, she started hitting the backside of the TV hoping to fix the problem. The little boy heard the door- bell ring, so he hurried to open the door, there stood Grand- ma's minister. The minister said, "Hello, son, is your Grandma home?" The little boy replied, "Yeah, she's in the bedroom bangin' her boyfriend." The minister fainted. 8 25

Rider Education Larry Tegel C. E. Jerry Cobra Cowan A.C.E. Rider Education It s beginning to look a lot like Christmas???? Well, the weather occasionally is cooling off with a few moist days. Now is the time to break out the cold weather gear. It s also the time we have to pay attention to where we are riding. Last week was probably our last mountain ride for the season. Even if there is no snow on the roads, you have to watch the melting snow running across the road in the cold shadows for ICE. If and when you are on a ride and the weather turns wet, you really need to slow your normal speed down. This increases your traction and allows you to maneuver out of the way of an obstacle or another vehicle. Even if you are riding/driving on a familiar rode, you don t know what is just around the corner. It could be debris, dirt/gravel, rocks, water, a person, an animal or vehicle. Those of us that carry a first aid kit on your bike or in your car should check to make sure it is complete and replace items as needed. You never know when you will come upon an accident. And remember, if you are trying to get the most mileage out of your tires, now is not the time to find yourself on a wet road with very little tread. We have lost too many friends recently and others with injuries, please be careful out there. Larry Tegel CA1M Chapter Educator 24 Vincent & Pamela Puterbaugh GWRRA-CA District Directors The Season of Giving When I was younger, I thought Santa Claus had the best job. Not only did he devote his life to bringing happiness to the world s children, but he got paid in chocolate chip cookies and glasses of milk. If that is not the epitome of cool, I don t know what is. Fast forward some 50-plus years to a middleaged motorcyclist with 6 grandchildren that all eagerly await Santa s arrival each Christmas Eve and you ll still find a man whose heroes are those who expend their efforts in service to others. A jolly old elf in a red velvet suit has been replaced by the men and women of our Armed Forces serving in digital fatigues, police officers, fire fighters, and teachers. In fact, anyone that puts the needs of others above their own self-interest is my hero. In GWRRA, we also have our heroes. They are the officers and staff that selflessly give of their time and talents to improve the experience that is our organization. They promote the motto of, Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge and, occasionally, end up making the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of serving others. Last month, GWRRA lost a hero and CA1R lost its Chapter Director, Harold Jaffke in a tragic accident while on a chapter ride. Two thirds of the way into the ride, the group encountered light rain and the ride leader, serving as Ride Captain for the first time, got on the CB and reminded everyone about how the oils come up on the road so avoid the center track as much as possible, and reduced the group s speed from 55 down to 40mph. As was often Harold s preference, he was serving as the tail gunner on this ride. Harold always enjoyed being able to see his chapter perform as a well practiced team and his vantage point allowed him the best view of everything. I have no doubt that he was beaming with pride at how well his chapter s newest Ride Captain was performing his duties when the driver of a Toyota Camry, travelling too fast for conditions, lost control, over corrected, and slammed into Harold s trike killing him. Continued on Pg. 10 9

The Season of Giving Continued from pg.6 When Harold set out that morning, he did not knowingly offer up his life to save a fellow member, but Road Captains know that they will be the first to encounter an obstacle and tail gunners know that they will be the first one struck from the rear by an out of control vehicle. Still, they assume these responsibilities in service to their fellow chapter members. Out of this tragedy came several other heroes trained and willing to serve. An off-duty Paramedic stopped and offered assistance as well as two Emergency Medical Technicians that happened to be returning to their base. A local resident offered up their home as a base of operations while the California Highway Patrol completed their investigation and the remaining riders tried to regain their composure. There were the riders that directed traffic and secured the scene so no further tragedies resulted and then there was the Ride Captain that made sure everyone was okay to ride, knew where they were going and had directions to get back home. All in all, it was a heroic day shrouded in tragedy for no amount of training or preparation will ever bring our beloved member back to us. To those of you who do give so freely of your time and talents and to those of you that continue your rider education and continually strive to hone your riding expertise, you have my heartfelt appreciation. To those of you who lead by example by your choice of riding styles and who choose to wear all of the gear all of the time, you have my admiration. To those of you that lead and tail gun on our group rides, and to those of you that are staff and officers and especially to our Chapter Directors that work so tirelessly to provide all of this more I would just like to say thank you and that you are my heroes and that Pam and I are proud to be your District Directors. December 2013 Issue Continued from pg. 22 You have to eat over the holidays, too, so we will have short rides to dinner every Wednesday night to somebody s place. On the 11 th, Larry Tegel will lead us to Giovanni s; Jerry Cowan will lead us to Lucy s on the 18 th ; we will all have a Merry Christmas on the 25 th ; and a Happy New Year on the 1 st. After all that ham and turkey and celebration, we ll get back together with our CA1M Family at Joe s Italian on the 8 th. Come one, come all to the CA1M motorcycle food for all! I ll lead, you follow, follow, follow all the way to a Happy New Year 2014! Ride well and ride often, Vincent and Pamela Puterbaug 10 23

Norm Barnard CA1M 2013 Tour Director December 2013 Issue California District - Chapter Rides for 2013 Happy Holidays to all CA1M s families, friends, and fellow GWRRA members!! CA1M had a wonderful, fun filled year because of you and your support of our Chapter, GWRRA and our Chapter Charities. We did our best to have more rides, to escape and explore popular and scenic routes to landmarks and attractions at the meetings, rallys, and conventions for even more fun, safety, and knowledge to take on the most technically challenging roads with your friends, riding on your Goldwing. Our ride schedule slowed down for the holidays in November and December but that does not mean we are not still having fun. We are thankful for the good times, while keeping in our thoughts and prayers with those protecting our country, and those less fortunate or struggling with health or other issues. This will be my last newletter as CA1M Tour Director. It has been my pleasure to try to entertain you with my articles and photos, and provide a fun and interesting ride schedule. I encourage all of you to step up and add your perspective to the club by leading rides and increasing participation in CA1M in the coming year. We all have rides that others have not ridden and places that others have not been. Hope to see you all on December 7 at the Christmas Party! You can recover on the 8 th at the Chapter Meeting and ride like an Egyptian after the meeting with Jerry Cowan. You can also help plan the rides for the next year at the Planning Meeting on the 9 th at Flo s. All are welcome and your participation is appreciated. There is a lot of interest in making a trip to Madison Wisconsin for Wing Ding in July. Our own Cruise Patrol, Otis Herrington, will lead us on a Year End Cruise on the 15 th. Jerry Cowan will follow that up with a Christmas Light Moonlight ride on the 21 st. If you are not crazy by then, Rich Blackburn will lead us to Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center on the 28 th. Cathy and Jess Siglow will lead us on a new steamy adventure on January 4 th to the Steam Engine Museum in Vista. Sounds like a great bunch of rides to end 2013 and rev up Feb. 15 SLICE OF WRY A mother and her little daughter were outside watching all the comings and goings of a wedding. After the photographs had been taken, everyone had driven off to the reception, and all the excitement was over. The girl asked her mother, Why did the bride change her mind, Mommy? How do you mean, change her mind? asked her mother. Well, said the child, she went into the church with one man and came out with another!
