I may not like what she s saying; but it keeps me on my toes. We have about a week to get ready for the District Rally in Mammoth. This will include working on the bike and getting the trailer packed. DON T FORGET TO CHECK YOUR TIRES! Chapter M is going to be there in force and we plan on having a good time. We will be leaving with group 8am because I not getting up at 2 free ken 30 in the morning to go with the first group leaving at 5am and I need all the beauty sleep I can get. There are two rallies in September, CA1V & CA1Z. We will be attending both and hope you plan on joining us. We will start collecting money for the Christmas Party at the meeting this month. For those of you that went on the dinner ride months ago, you already know where it s going to be. The rest of you have to wait until the meeting to find out. Please keep Val & Barbara in your prayers. They re going through some really tough times and will need the support and prayers from of all of us. Sandy & Steve Damico CA-1M CD 3

Bill & Rene Johnson GWRRA-CA District Directors Highlights of the July 2012 Meeting by Sue Blackburn for Lois Cowan DD Review, Well, August has sure brought in some undesired heat up and down the state; I m really looking forward to some milder weather up in Mammoth. I just checked the weather on that side of the mountain, and the next 10 days are averaging around 78 degrees as the high temp - I can t wait. CA-2K just completed their annual Day with the Krows and though the heat kept some away, those that toughed out the ride were greeted with a very nice park, lots of prizes, and surprisingly very mild temp s considering what they were bracing for. As I mentioned earlier, we are working very hard to help establish a new chapter up in the Redding, CA area of our state, that is an area that has lots of Wing riders with the closest chapter to them being CA-C which is 160 miles to the south. I will be meeting with the initial team this coming weekend (Aug 19 th ), so wish us luck. Speaking of wishing some Luck, most of you have been following Bernadette s (CA-1A) recovery from a motorcycle accident; please join me in keeping her and Bernard in our prayers. There is a get-well card drive ongoing, so we are encouraging everyone to send one to: Bernadette Gonzales, Broadwater Ave., Lancaster, CA In view of my short calendar getting ready for the District Convention, I m going to keep this short (I can hear the cheering already), so until next time Hang on we re going for a ride. There were 41 members and 6 guests at the meeting, along with 9 bikes and 1 trike. Welcome to Gary Groff and Barbara Smith, Bill and Barbara Lindsey and Mike Critzion and Kevin Nuir from Chapter V. Since mike has been coming to our meetings and other activities, Steve presented him with a cow hat. Congratulations Mike! CHAPTER STORE Cecelia announced that there is one 30 th anniversary book left. There s also some new pins and some black hats with a white cow on the front. Welcome back to Glenn Maness who returned from a month long trip to the east coast (the south). He traveled 6,577 miles! RIDER EDUCATION Larry presented Dean and Lou Olson with their Level I, II, and III patches. Congratulations guys! Larry also reminded us to always be prepared for any kind of weather when riding. Have rain gear and staying hydrated are very important. He showed us the cool vests, 2 types of cool collars, long sleeves, and butler mugs. Bill & Rene Johnson GWRRA California District Directors Continued pg
Continued from pg. 25 After the District Convention on August 31 st to September 3rd, you can dine with the herd on dinner rides to Yellow Basket, Archibald s, Laws, Mill Creek, and Teakwood s; with Larry T, Steve D, Matt B., Glen M., and Norm B., respectively. If the weather is too hot, you can cool off at Del and Joanne s Pool Party at the clubhouse on September 22 at 11:00 am. Just bring a dish to pass and Del will BBQ some MOO Meat and it will all be ready to eat at 1:00 pm. California DD Review Continued from pg. 5 Until we meet again, Hang on we re going for a ride. Bill & Rene Johnson GWRRA California District Directors The weekend before, on September 15, you can practice up on your BBQ dining with Chapter D at the Dude Ranch in Tehachapi. See their web site for details. The weekend after, on September 29, you can Rally with the Zebra s BBQ at Rainbow on Saturday and still make the CA1V Rally in Victorville on Sunday, September 30. And if you are looking for some long distance fall fun, you can make it to the Pumpkin Festival in Elk Grove with Bob on October 6. If you are in for a short, twisty ride, you can follow Rich through the CA-Dragon near Lake Isabella also on the 6 th to the Sequoias with an overnight in Tulare and a return on the 7 th. More details on these rides will follow at the meeting, including, the AZ District Rally on October 26 th. Of course we expect to see you at our Monthly Meetings on September 9 and October 14. And as a result of all these great events, we expect you to all have more safety, fun, and knowledge thanks to GWRRA and CA1M. 26 7
Continued from pg. 24 Jerry took us to Peggy Sue s and had us twisting every which way but loose, before we straightened out across the desert on a horse with no name. I think you can see why Jerry and Lois chose this place. It was fun and everyone enjoyed this version of a dinner ride on the weekend. Other dinner rides included Sandra s, Hoggs, and Red Robin. 8 Continued on pg.26 25
Continued from pg. 23 We did have a great trip to the Getty Museum this last weekend. I think all of us saw some roads we had not ridden before as we made our way from Location 2 through Carbon Canyon to the streets of LA and onto the freeways for the run to the Getty. Although at times, it seemed like we got lost in the Getty Garden maze. The Getty was great with a guided tour and video guide phones that told the story of any painting or article by simply typing in a number from the location of your interest. We were fortunate to catch the end of two of the exhibits featuring some local talent. Feb. Mar. April May Jun. 10 Rider Education Larry Tegel C. E. Jerry Cobra Cowan A.C.E. Rider Education TOPIC: THE INVISIBLE MOTORCY- CLIST Norm Barnard CA1M 2011 Tour Director September 2012 Issue Moos, Mooos and Moons at the Getty and Beyond "I never saw him. He came out of nowhere!" That's probably the most common statements heard at a collision between an automobile and a motorcyclist. They're usually made by the operator of the auto because the motorcyclist is unconscious (or worse). As riders we wonder, "How can they NOT see us? Are they just not looking?" A lack of attention on the part of the driver does explain some of the car/bike collisions; the distracted driver, cell 'phones, unruly children, etc. All these can contribute BUT some responsibility belongs to the motorcyclist as well. I know. I know. That's heresy. Let me explain. Motorcycles make up about 3% of the "normal" traffic flow. People "see" what they expect to see; things like cars and trucks. Unless the rider does something to visually stand out, he can be easily overlooked. Motorcycles ARE much harder to see than cars/trucks because of their smaller size. A motorcycle can easily be "lost" in the background even with the headlight on. Many motorcycles are colors that lend themselves to blending into the environment. Particularly dark colored machines (black is the color of pavement after all). I hope everyone had a good summer wherever you enjoyed it. I am going to extend my summer with two more trips; one to the District Convention at Mammoth over Labor Day weekend and one to Colorado from the 6 th to the 16 th. The District Convention should be even more fun than last year and if you did not attend, you all missed out. We will have stories to tell by the time of the Monthly Meeting on September 9, 2012 at the American Legion in Redlands. I will not be there, but I will be having almost as much fun in CO if it is not raining. The fall colors should be in full abundance. 10 Continued on pg
Rider Education Continued from pg. 10 SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAY A Matt & Carol Burns 7 A Del & Joanne Britton 24 A B Ed Pelczar 4 B Larry Presser 11 B Becki Bodden 8 B Jim Gorman 24 Tony & Robbin Cantrambone SEPTEMBER ANNIVERSARY 20 A Gary & Shirley Blackburn 26 A Melanie & Ed Pelczar 22 A Diana & Freddie Fowler 29 Many motorcyclist wear dark colored helmets (or no helmet at all, but we won't discuss those here) AND dark colored clothing. A number of studies in the US and abroad have shown that a light colored (white, silver, yellow) helmet is more noticeable (during daylight hours) than a dark colored (black, dark red, dark blue) helmet. Why? The driver sees this bright colored "orb" floating above the traffic (most riders heads are higher than the hoods/windshields of cars). It's DIFFERENT. Lastly (and sadly), most motorcyclists are not skilled in emergency maneuvers. Over 13% of the motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes made NO effort to avoid the collision. They didn't brake, they didn't swerve, they just rode right into the collision. That's because, after they've gotten their license, they don't practice those kinds of maneuvers regularly (or ever). Motorcycling is a SKILL. It takes practice. So how can you NOT be the Invisible Motorcyclist? Position your bike so it can be seen and identified in the traffic stream. Wear bright colors Consider getting a brightly colored bike PRACTICE your emergency maneuvers Use brights during daytime Consider modulating headlights/brake lights Stay out of their blindspots-if you can't see their eyes in their mirrors, they can't see you Or you could take the advice I got once from a very experienced rider. He told me not to "ride like I was invisible." He told me to ride like they can see me and are actively planning to do something to take me out." Be safe out there.
