We should now have some cooler weather for riding. By the time you read this the District Rally in Mammoth will be over. I m sure those that went had a great time. Chapter M always has a good time wherever we go. This will be the 3rd year for Sandy and I, and it just keeps getting better. So if you think, "been there, done that", and don t plan on attending different activities you will miss out. Just like everyday is different, so is every function. You don t want to be saying, I wish I had attended. It s too late then! For the District Rally Chapter M, or should I say Jerry, was in charge of the Amazing Team Challenge. Thanks to Jerry and all the members who helped or participated. We do appreciate it. Chapter M won the "silver cup" for having the most in attendance. We had 29 members at the District rally. We had the pool party at the Clubhouse on September 22. There was a lot of good food, and we hope everyone had a good time. Thanks to Del and Joanne for opening up their home and inviting us back again. Chapter M really likes to get together and enjoy one another's company. We have a lot of laughs and good times. By the time you read this Chapter Z and V's rallies will be over. The rallies give us a chance to show our support and to visit with our friends from other chapters, or make new friends. There are only a couple of rallies left for this year, so try to attend. When we have our rally in May, we will want other chapters to come, enjoy and support our rally too. As usual there are dinner rides every Wednesday night so you can dine with your friends and have some mid-week laughs. Chapter M's Christmas Party will be here before you know it. We will talk about it at the October meeting. We have asked Steve & Becki Bodden to be our assistant ACD's, and they said yes! So when you get a chance, go up and congratulate them. Val & Barb will still be the ACD's. We just thought it would be good to have some extra assistants. Sandy & Steve Damico CA-1M CD 3

Bill & Rene Johnson GWRRA-CA District Directors Highlights of the September 2012 Meeting by Lois Cowan DD Review, Whew, where has the time gone? It seems like it was just a few days ago Rene & I were in a panic pending the start of our 1 st California District Convention. We now realize we just finished our 3 rd annual event, and we had a blast doing it. I must admit it is was a lot of work at times, but with the help of a strong team and the support of the Chapters, it all came together without a hitch. Sure there were a few bumps, some overlooked names, and things I could have gone better, but as Jerry Cowan was heard telling one of the members of his ARC class in Mammoth when they voiced some concern about a few cracks in the range; this is the real world. The past 3 years seem to be a blur, but there were some eye opening events along the way. I was impressed to learn that whenever I asked for help, 99% of the time I got it, I ll take that batting average anytime. I have always believed that when you empower someone to take ownership in what they signed up for, they will perform much better than if you micro manage them, and it sure makes your job much easier. We had very little input on most of the work performed by our incredible team (COY/IOY Coordinator, MEC s, MFA, Training, COTH, RE, Treasurer, District Store, and a mouthful of other alphabet soup acronym s members), but everyone performed with the pride and professionalism that I couldn t have come close to matching. The only credit Rene & I can take is for selecting a very dynamic and dedicated team. We are very proud everything they have accomplished and how hard they have worked. 48 Members 12 Bikes 3 Trikes Chapter Pride Steve Bodden Becki is holding it for safe keeping 50/50 Diane Danton and Dan Hoeft Charity Donation Carrot cake is being enjoyed by Sherrie Rau Visitors We had none since Steve declared Big Mike and Berry are no longer guest they are now members since they come to more meeting then some of our own members. Announcements: Big Mike announced CA1V has only 4 registrations to their rally from Chapter M that is on Sept. 30 th. Steve showed the Trophy the Chapter won at the state Rally with the most members in attendance and we did not even count Mr & Mrs. Big Mike. Gary Blackburn was recognized for his work on the Chapter news letter. Val Tait is fighting cancer, Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Steve Bodden is leading the ride to CA1Z rally on Sept 29 th Don Ginter is leading the ride to CA1V on September 30 th September 22 the Herd is heading to Del and JoAnn s watering hole for a pool party. The Chapter will buy 3 foot sandwiches and the member listing will be split to bring a side or a dessert. An will be sent out about the party. Continued on Pg. 6 Continued pg
Continued from pg. 25 The fun will continue at the CA1Z rally in Temecula and CA1V in Victorville this weekend. If you haven t liked way the ride leaders have been leading, this is your chance to ride with two new leaders, Steve Bodden and Don Ginter. Come on out and ride, it will be fun, I guarantee it. You ll also have an opportunity to do an overnighter to Tulare with Rich Blackburn, the best tour leader in the world, through the shady Sequoia National Forest on the Better than Tail of the Dragon. California DD Review Continued from pg. 5 As we begin to turn over the rein s over to Vince & Pam Puterbaugh, we are honored to see how well their new team is developing. During our run we always ensured we listened to the input and opinion of everyone on the staff and tried to implement a balance of that input. Vince & Pam have had a lot of influence on everything we did. Their vision is to not make a lot of unnecessary changes, in other words, if it ain t broken, don t fix it. That s why you will notice a lot of familiar faces on the new team. There will definitely be some changes; change is good. One of the 1 st things on their plate is securing a location for the 2013 California District Convention. That s a very difficult decision and process, so they have asked for input from everyone to help determine the best location for next years event. Some of you have expressed a desire to return to Mammoth again, but others would like a change. Please forward your input to them through your Chapter Directors, then plan to attend next years event regardless of where it is. Remember, this is your Convention, without you, it just won t be as much fun. We will talk about it all at the Chapter Meeting on the 14 th and Planning Meeting on the 15 th. Don Ginter will also lead us to CA1F in San Diego on the 20 th. The AZ District Rally begins on the 26 th ; I m sure Jim Back will be taking his trike to see if he can win the best of show on two wheels again. Check out AZ s website and get your reservations and registrations submitted. Hope to see you on the rides, at the rallies, and at our meetings for even more fun, safety, and knowledge. Rene & I still have several months to serve as your District Directors. Next on our agenda is to continue to help Redding develop their chapter (CA-2R), and there are still a few Chapter Rally s to attend this year, so don t be surprised to see a bunch of Burnt Orange shirts coming in the door. We hope to see everyone at CA-1Z & CA-1V s combined weekend Rally s on Sept 29 & 30 respectfully. Thank you all for your support you have given us over the past 3 years. Until we meet again, Hang on we re going for a different ride. - Hugs - Bill & Rene Johnson GWRRA California District Directors 26 7
Continued from pg. 24 Dinner rides were to Yellow Basket with Larry Tegel, Archibald's with Steve Damico, Law s with Matt Burns, Mill Creek with Glen Maness. and Teakwood's new restaurant in Murrieta on October 3 with Norm Barnard. Del and Joanne hosted a pool party at the club house on the 22nd. Everyone had a great time playing games, visiting, and watching Rudy Bayardo perform belly flops and cannon balls into the pool. The food was delicious and plentiful. We aren t talking about the desserts, that way there will be more left for us next time. But Sheree Tegel s Better Than Sex cake was 8 Continued on pg.26 25

Rider Education Larry Tegel C. E. Jerry Cobra Cowan A.C.E. Rider Education Norm Barnard CA1M 2011 Tour Director October 2012 Issue Why Should I Take a Rider Course? This question is one that many of us find easy to answer. What we may not understand is why anyone would need to ask it. There are some riders in each of our chapters that choose not to participate in an instructed Rider Course. Let s examine this and try to understand why, and look at what a Rider Course can do for you. Some may say, I ve been riding for years. I don t need to take a class. Others will boast about the miles they have accumulated on two wheels and ask what can they teach me? Have you ever tried to persuade someone with that attitude that a Rider Course might help them be an even better rider? Their position can be so negative and so strongly put that you don t want to talk to them about the benefits of rider training. Sometimes, people hide their self doubt behind a curtain of confidence and bluster. Is it possible to have all the knowledge and skill necessary to avoid any accident? Well, if one chooses not to ride very far or very often, then perhaps it is possible. But I wouldn t want to bet my life on it! Do you remember a single season in your riding career without at least one close call or near miss due to another motorist s driving behavior? How about a single month? If you ride around the state or across the country, you expose yourself to many different situations that require anticipation of all the possible actions of other drivers. You have to be prepared to counter with the proper response whatever their action and do it in a split second! A motorcycle Rider Course helps prepare you mentally and physically to execute the kinds of maneuvers called for by a driver s unexpected actions. We look upon these classes as an opportunity to learn and improve our riding skills in a safe environment. How hot was your summer? It was so hot the herd stayed in the shade, grazed at night at local eateries, or escaped to the mountains or the pool. Those that braved the heat had a month of motorcycle excitement at the rallies and on the open road. I know I did. The CA District Rally at Mammoth was another great success over the Labor Day weekend; with the herd bringing home its share of trophies and memories. Mammoth provided a much cooler mountain respite from the heat. We took day rides out to nearby mountain lakes and local scenic areas. See the pictures on the website or Shutterfly. 11 Rider Education Continued from pg. 10 A Jim & Leanne Gorman 7 OCTOBER BIRTHDAY B Dan Hoeft 7 B Shirley Blackburn 13 B Steve Damico 8 B Greta Barnard 16 B Lisa Williams 10 B Becky Torres 16 B Gary Blackburn 11 B Neal Chandler 22 OCTOBER ANNIVERSARY The instructors are trained to spot the little techniques during range exercises that riders tend to forget to employ on the road. They provide reminders to all students in a positive manner. Their trained eyes and constructive comments are geared to put each of us on the path to being the safest riders we can be. This can help with your attitude and performance on the road. Being reminded of the best techniques to execute different skills does not hurt at all. It is painless. The practice and coaching helps to improve our skills, whether we never knew the technique to use, or just need the occasional reminder. Hey, who doesn t appreciate a reminder from time to time? Especially when it is about something you want to do correctly and safely, but may have just forgotten the best method. In athletic training we are taught that practice makes perfect. And when you practice something you enjoy doing, it s just a lot of fun! Practicing motorcycle riding maneuvers in a closed parking lot with someone else (the instructors) monitoring the range to protect the riders from outside hazards helps you focus your attention on the task at hand becoming a better rider! On another level, taking a Rider Course will help you qualify for advancement in the Rider Education Levels Program, to Level II or above, or keep you current in your present level. And there is one more thing to remember about all GWRRA Rider Course offerings. Nobody fails! Everyone who completes the course receives a course completion card. There are no minimum performance requirements. You are asked to push yourself to improve your abilities. You won t get better at it if you don t try. Sign up for a Rider Course today. You will thank yourself later! Ride Smart & Be Safe! Bruce & Melissa Thayer Former MI Asst. District Rider Educators brucethayer1@comcast.net Be safe out there. Larry Tegel CA1M Chapter Educator 2/

SLICE OF WRY ALTERNATE LEAVE LOCATIONS FOR RIDES Well, that Abraham Lincoln did have a way with words, didn t he? And he had a good head on his shoulders, too. The 16th president once was taken to task by a member of his staff, who complained that Lincoln was far to accommodating to his critics and distracters. You're the president, the aide said. Why do you try to make friends of your enemies? You should do your best to destroy them. Lincoln replied gently, with a smile, Now, hold on.
