Please bring an item to auction. The items don t have to be Harley related or Christmas related, can be funny or useful or just something you don t want. There is a block of rooms at the Main Street Inn (across the street from the Holiday Inn) for $46. Call and tell them you are with the Northern Chapter H.O.G. they will hold the rooms at that rate until December 1 and are trying to put us all together. (You can stay at the Holiday Inn, but they would not give us a reduced rate, or hold a block of rooms and the rooms are $120, so we decided to stay across the street) Tickets will be available for sale until December 4 at the Chapter meetings, from the officers, and Eric will have them at Classic. Tickets are sold in advance only as we need a head count for the caterers, so make sure you get them before December 4. NEW CHAPTER MEETING LOCATION!!! 2 MILEAGE COMPETITION Don t forget to have your mileage read before December 1. If you can t get into the dealership to have Eric read it, any officer can read the mileage. Invite one to your house. The awards for the mileage competition will be given out at the Christmas Party. Editor Change For those of you who me, please use my personal address efisch@chartermi.net. Classic changed internet providers and I can no longer download my Classic s at home. MUSIC REQUESTS, PLEASE! Since we are putting together the list of music for the Christmas Party we would like people who have special requests to please let us know before the party so we can make sure we have it. I have gotten lists of the top 100 dance songs and the top 100 rock songs from VH1 s website and are using that as a starting place. Remember, if you don t let me know what you want to hear, I will be picking the music (did I mention that Barry Manilow is my favorite artist???) Any special requests, please call or or efisch@chartermi.net....and that s why we call her COCO. RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP! October Chapter Meeting Drawings 50/50 Drawing: Sue Buquet Mary Nelson won the $25 Classic Gift Certificate, again, because she was wearing a Classic Shirt. Next month the drawing will be for a $25 gift certificate. Membership drawing would have been won by Dave Arnold but he wasn t at the meeting. Next month s drawing will be for $100 You could be the Next Lucky Winner! It is that time of the year to renew your local membership. Your National H.O.G. membership expires one year from when you join, but the local memberships all expire on January 1. Enclosed you will find a Chapter Membership Enrollment Form. You will quit receiving newsletters if you do not renew your local membership by January 1. (If you joined after October 1, your membership is good for next year.) Page 2 CLASSIC LEGEND TIMES

3 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 10 Page 3 November Chapter & Business Meeting Minutes The Chapter meetings are being moved to Thursday nights because there has been a larger participation on Thursday nights than on Saturdays. We are trying the Elks for the December meeting. We will have a private room and won t have to compete with other diners. There is a full course menu available and they will have 2 servers for our group. The cut-off date for getting things into the newsletter is the 18th of the month. Cheryl will no longer wait for anyone who has something to get into the newsletter. Anyone who is interested in a position on next years board was encouraged to talk to Don. A lot of chapters have elections for the officer positions, but Don explained the reason we don t do that is that he usually has to recruit people to take the positions. It is a commitments, but a lot of fun. There is a LOH meeting on November 21 at 7 p.m. It is a pot-luck and they will be discussing the decorations for the Christmas Party as well as their activities for the remainder of the year. They are buying the gifts for the party on November 22 and are wrapping gifts at Classic on December 20 and 21. Don t forget to get your mileage read by December 1. It can be read by any road captain. The road captains are looking for ideas for next years rides and events. Think of the kind of places that work well for our group and if you have any ideas, please let one of your road captains know. On Monday, March 8, anyone who is in Florida is invited to a Northern Chapter winter party in Key West at the Hogsbreath Saloon. Bob Kling asked for suggestions on anything you would like to see from your Safety Director for next year. A huge thanks to Bob for all his work this year. We all learned a lot! The Father Fred Committee needs volunteers for its committee. The November business meeting held a discussion on how we want to organize the Father Fred ride next year. It will be held the week-end of July The emphasis will be on simplifying the week-end Ride and Have Fun. We are checking into how much money was raised by the sale of t-shirts and whether we will do that again. It was suggested we might do a patch instead. Need to decide what to do about pins with coupon books or with ride registration. Michael Cole is seeing about the possibility of selling t-shirts/pins/patches at Friday Night live, but we are not having any activities on Friday night. The VFW offered to sponsor trophies for another bike show, but since we are not having that, we will approach them about sponsoring the trophies for the poker run on Saturday. The poker run on Saturday will end downtown with the trophies awarded there. Don suggested we approach the restaurant owners downtown to see about putting together a discount coupon booklet for Saturday night. We are looking into getting with the DDA to see about closing off a couple of blocks Saturday night to view bikes and about the coupon book. We thought the breakfast after the ride at the VFW was great and will approach them about doing that again next year. It appears an escorted ride may be a problem next year, so Bob is looking into it. We also need to find out who is hosting the website and how to update it. Volunteers are needed for the committee. The Christmas Party is December 13 (see details on the front page). Raggs and Bob O. will be taking tickets at the door. Don t forget your silent auction items.

Many thanks to Eileen Heck for all her ideas and the time she spent on them. (If you need to decorate for an event inexpensively, call Eileen!!) We also got all the gifts bought and wrapped for the Christmas Party. Thanks to Sandi, Jeannette and Cheryl for helping on that. The last thing we have this season is the gift wrapping at Classic on December 20 & 21. If you can t come help, bring your gifts and we will wrap them in Harley paper for a donation. We had a blast last year, hope some of you join us for an hour or two. If you have any questions about the wrapping, feel free to give me a call at Raggs & I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you and your families a great holiday season. 6 HOW WAS HARRY HURT? by Robert Vaughn Perhaps the most renowned study of motorcycle accident causes and countermeasures was done for the University of Southern California by researcher Harry Hurt. He investigated 900 motorcycle accidents and analyzed another 3600 motorcycle traffic accident reports. The Motorcycle Safety Courses developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation are designed largely to build the skills that the Hurt Study found to be missing in the accident-involved rider. Looking at just a few of the Hurt findings allows us to see the essential things we can do to avoid an accident. Who hits us? Most accidents involve a car violating our right-of-way. Most frequently, the car turns left in front of the motorcycle. Where do we get hit? Intersections are the most likely place for the motorcycle accident, with the car not only violating our right-of-way, but often traffic controls as well. Most accidents are on the short trips such as shopping, errands, visiting friends, entertainment or recreation. Most accidents happen close to the trip origin. More than three-fourths of the hazards are within 45 of straight ahead. Why do they hit us? The main reason is that the driver of the other vehicle does not see us in time to avoid the collision. Alcohol is involved in almost half of the fatal accidents. Most motorcyclists are smart enough to separate riding and drinking. Unfortunately, too many car drivers on the road are more mentally challenged. Why aren t we seen? Conspicuity of the motorcycle is the most critical factor. Conspicuity is most critical from the front. How can we be seen? Accident involvement is significantly reduced by the wearing of high visibility yellow, orange or bright red jackets. It looks as though we need to take care to make sure that we are seen. This means both the helmet (white or bright colors in the day and reflective material at night) and jacket should be highly visible. It also means positioning our motorcycles where we can be seen in traffic. How else can we avoid accidents? Just paying attention to our driving improves our odds. We should use extra care on any motorcycle on which we have less than 5 months experience. Motorcycle rider courses reduce accidents and injuries in accidents. The courses teach the braking and swerving skills found to be lacking in many accident-involved riders. In many states, the Riding and Street Skill course also allows us to omit the on-street exam when we obtain our motorcycle license. Proper eye protection prevents the impaired vision which delays hazard detection. How can we prevent injuries in an accident? Heavy boots, jackets, and gloves reduce or prevent road rash. Full coverage helmets increase protection and reduce face injuries. Knowledge is power. Now we know where and why we get hit. We know how to make ourselves seen and how to avoid both accidents and injury. It s up to us to put this knowledge to use. Page 6 CLASSIC LEGEND TIMES

At a Safety talk given by our illustrious Safety Officer, Bob Kling, he talked about making sure you have emergency information on you when you ride. It was mentioned that it is a good idea to put your information on the inside of your helmet. Ken Buquet thought this was such an important point, he took it upon himself to make stickers that can be put on the inside of your helmet with emergency information. They can be obtained at the Chapter Meetings or from Eric at Classic. THANKS KEN!!!
