Up the River Our first meeting as your Chapter Directors held on January 9 th at the Black Bear Diner has come and gone. We thank all of you for attending the meeting. The Chapter ended up with 40 members and visitors in attendance. We have a new meeting location starting with our February 20th meeting. We have made arrangements with the Bing Maloney Golf Course, located at 6801 Freeport Blvd., in Sacramento, to hold our monthly meetings at their Maloney's Grill. Upon arrival you will place and pay for your order at the counter. Once your order is ready it will be brought to you by the grill's staff. You will have access to the complete breakfast menu. We hope everyone enjoys this place. It is, once again, time to start thinking about whether or not you wish to attend the California District Conference for The conference will be held at The Village in Mammoth again this year and CA-C will continue to do registration on Friday morning. Reservations may be made by calling (800) MAMMOTH or (800) The best deal going is the 2 bedroom rate of $ per night which puts each room under $100 per night. Underground parking, high speed internet, and DVD rentals are all included in the price of the room. The rooms have a full kitchen (stove, utensils, toaster, microwave, etc), a private bathroom for each bedroom, a living room, and a large screen TV in each room. The room rates are available from August 29th through Sept 5th. Convention Registrations and other Mammoth details are available on the District Web page located at We will have convention enrollment forms at the upcoming meetings as well. Is everyone current on their levels program? Are there classes you need to complete the current requirements to advance to the next level? Please let Gordon Flowers, Noland Mayo, or Marilyn and I know what you need in order to advance to the next level. We will do what we can to see that this is accomplished. As always the Chapter will continue to have lots of activities. We hope that everyone will find something that they will enjoy. Coming up in February are dinner/dessert rides to Marie Calendar's in Elk Grove and Danielle's Creperie in Sacramento. A lunch ride is in the works as well as an all day ride to San Francisco. We also plan on visiting CA2K in Fairfield. Most important of all is the Rider Ed. Training scheduled on February 19 th at the home Scot Smith and Mary Kimbell-Smith, at 10:00 am, with a ride to Mel's in Jackson following the training. As usual we will send out reminders of the events prior to their occurrence. We hope everyone stays happy and healthy in Ride safe, ride often and come join us at the many upcoming rides and events. From up the river, Rick and Marilyn Kaspar, Chapter Directors

WHERE OH WHERE DID THAT BASEMENT OFFICE GO? Bill Cosby did a routine that explained how old men keep their memory working. It went somewhat like this. Ever notice that when you realize that you need to do something and you get out of your chair to go get whatever it was or do whatever chore, you forget what you stood up to do? So you go back to your chair and sit down and as if in an epiphany you realize what it was and stand up again to do whatever it was. Sometimes it happens again before you get to where you were going and you numbly go back to your chair. As soon as you sit the memory returns! Now have you ever noticed that some old men seem to scratch their asses as they walk around doing their various chores and projects? That is because the experienced older male individual has discovered that the process of sitting down and applying the ensuing pressure on the ass causes ones memory to return. In order to keep the memory working as he goes about his day he stimulates the memory by placing a pressure in the form of scratching on the area of memory retention (his ass) thus not forgetting what he was about to do. So I suggest that you older men should start this practice as soon as possible. I started some time back and as you see I do remember most things (spelling not one of those) and have become quite adept at typing with one hand in order to keep my thoughts together. LIST OF THINGS TO REMEMBER MEETING ON 3 rd SUNDAY UNLESS ON 2 nd SUNDAY, IF NOT CANCELLED. PLP IS NOT SKILLS PRACTICE, AND SKILLS PRACTICE IS NOT PLP. PLP IS NOT A BRAND OF GUM. TCLOCK IS SOMETHING YOU DO BEFORE YOU RIDE, NOT AFTER YOU BREAK DOWN. BOB IS MY NAME AND B.O.B. IS BUTTS ON BIKE. CA-C IS MY CHAPTER, NOT THE SOUND I MAKE EATING AT DENNY S. HONEY DEW IS A MELON. HONEY DO IS SOMETHING I DON T DO. DOO RAG IS NOT A DANCE FROM THE 20 s. CHIPPY IS A STATE PATROL. CHIP IS WHO CHIPPY STOPS. COLD IS OK WITH HEATED CLOTHING, NOLAN IS NOT. IRON HORSE IS A STEAM LOCOMOTIVE OR IF TOM, A MOTORCYLCIST THAT IS LOCO AND MOTIVE (DOES THIS GUY EVER STOP RIDING?) ZIPPER IS WHAT CAN HELP KEEP YOU TOGETHER, OR RODNEY STANDING SIDEWAYS WITH HIS TONGUE OUT. HEALTH IS FLEETING AND NEEDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF. FRIENDS ARE SPECIAL AND TO BE TREASURED. FLAT IS A NEW TV SCREEN, AND FLATS COST SO MUCH I CANT AFFORD THE FLAT SCREEN. ENJOY IS WHAT WE SHOULD ALL DO EVERY DAY. Bob Harris ACD CA-C GWRRA Oh Yeah! Nancy says hi!

MASCOT MUSINGS Scot and Mary Kimbell-Smith, Assistant Chapter Directors How I Spent My Weekend Vacation (or Is 2 days in Bakersfield REALLY like a month anywhere else?) On Friday, January 14 th nine members of CA-C headed south to Bakersfield for the Officer Certification Program. Chapter Directors Rick and Marilyn Kaspar and Assistant Chapter Directors Bob and Nancy Harris were headed to the recertification program on Saturday and there were several of us scheduled to attend the full Officer Certification Program on both Saturday and Sunday. In the full program were: Gordon and Cathy Flowers, Rocco, Noland Mayo and me (Scot was in Orlando, Florida for a magician s conference). Tom and Barb Jefferies were already in Bakersfield waiting for us as they are on the District team. (That means they were wearing their rust colored shirts rather than our green!) I m not sure those of us going for the full program knew quite what to expect. The first surprise was that we got real workbooks (in binders and not skinny!) and found out that not only would there be a test on Sunday but there was a practice or study test for us to do as homework on Saturday night. The second surprise was that we were not going to be done by noon on Sunday but that we should expect to be there until around 4pm. Now, don t get me wrong. I like Bakersfield as well as the next town. (Ok so I exaggerate just a little.) But I really couldn t see spending much time there. Then I consoled myself with the thought that if we were going to be spending all that time in class, I could pretend the class was taking place in Hawaii since I couldn t see outside, it really could have been anywhere! For all my trepidation, the class was really worthwhile. There was tons of good information about GWRRA, the history, structure and organization, etc. We also learned what makes us a chapter (rather than a club), why GWRRA has the policies we have, what the expectations are of the officers and much, much more. The presenters were many of the District officers. You really have to attend something where Vince Puterbaugh from Chapter CA1-Z is presenting. He keeps things very lively. The different presenters each took one or two modules to keep things moving along and there were games and team challenges as we went. Terri Riolo did a great job putting her team of trainers through their paces. When the presenters were not presenting they each sat with one of the tables to assist us if we had questions. With fourteen modules in all, there was even a module on Stress and Time Management for the GWRRA Officer. (HINT there are no questions on the test from that module!!) All kidding aside, we took in a TON of information that is valuable to all GWRRA members, not just officers. So I encourage all of you to sign up for this course the next time it is offered. Who knows, it may be in beautiful downtown Bakersfield again. But you may not get that lucky and it may have to be somewhere else. By the way, if it is held in Bakersfield there is a Famous Dave s BBQ just a few miles from the hotel and they have GREAT food. Let s Ride! Scot and Mary

We just concluded the Officers Conference where many of those that took the Officers Certification Program training last year were brought up to date with the changes the have occurred since the training. In addition, over 80 more of our members took the (OCP) training last weekend, so you can bet we have been extremely busy. This year brought a lot of new changes to the requirements of running a Chapter, but I m very happy to say that everyone completed them all in record time. Your Chapter Leadership Team has been extremely busy putting all their financial documentation and Officer Renewal documentation together, so I m sure they re ready to get back to the business of riding. At the Officers Conference I announced that due to popular demand, the 2011 California Convention will be returning to Mammoth Lakes, CA again this year. Last year when I told the Mayor of Mammoth that I was planning on bringing up over 300 GWRRA members up for the weekend, I don t think they believed me. Well, when over 430 rolled in, we were treated like Kings. Trust me, they believe me now when I told them we are coming back, so everyone from the Mayor, to the Police Chief, from the Honor Guard to the restaurant owners are all gearing up for what could set an all time California record, so start making your vacation plans soon. My incredible staff is diligently working to make the Convention even better than last year, but we can t do it alone. You can help by sharing your experiences with those that weren t able to attend last year, and encouraging them to come on up and Play Big. We ll have more rides similar to the Mayor s Choice through some of the most pristine riding country California has to offer, and we have reworked the schedule to allow more riding time and for you to attend all the training you desire, while still allowing time to compete in the Bike Show and watch the Gold Angles perform, and much, much more. I have negotiated with the hotel to give us even better room rates than last year and had them make the rates available for the entire week prior to the Convention (Aug 29 th - Sep 5 th ) to allow those of us that want to take our vacation up there this year since that trip to Hawaii is a bit out of the budget. Just to put the Hotel and room rates in perspective, I just went on line and priced the cost of a 2-Bedroom Suite for one night, January 22 nd at the Village Lodge which is a 3 Diamond Hotel. They go for $580 per night plus $20 per night Hotel fee. We get the same rooms for under $200 per night, with no Hotel fee, which is the best deal going this year. All suites come with free Internet, full kitchen, DVD rental, and underground parking. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, so you don t have to worry about sharing a toothbrush holder with your buddy. When you split the cost with another couple, and cook a breakfast or two, then the rooms are actually cheaper, and much nicer, than any place we have ever held a convention in recent history. Don t believe me; just ask anyone that attended last year. You can make reservations by calling 1 (800) MAMMOTH and mentioning the GWRRA Convention. If you do so by June 1 st, you will be entered into a drawing for a free nights lodging. Please check out the District Web site for more details at See you on the road soon, so Hang on we re going for a ride. Bill & Rene Johnson GWRRA California District Directors As your Newsletter Editor, I would like you to please remember our newsletter is what we, the Chapter members, make it. So you can help with the creation of an interesting, informative and fun newsletter by submitting articles about your favorite ride, bike accessory, travel adventure, or a just plain funny story. Your submitted articles may be edited depending on space available. For the next newsletter, the deadline is the 20th of this month. It s not too late to submit your story. Pictures in.jpg format are always welcome. Again, thanks Hugs to all of you, Karen Coleman

GROUP RIDING IS A TEAM SPORT In GWRRA we are always doing things in groups. We meet our fellow chapter members and ride together for a weekly dinner run. Or we join each other for a weekend breakfast before going on a run. Or we make an ice cream run together on a weekly basis. Most chapters have this kind of camaraderie and fellowship in one form or another. Then there are the monthly Gatherings where we meet and eat and have fun. And the rides to visit other chapters and support them at their Fun Run or Anniversary Party or Pig Out, and various other events that chapters put on. Much of the time we ride together in groups traveling to and from our various destinations. Whenever we ride in groups, someone is in the Lead position. Hopefully, it is one of our GWRRA-trained Road Captains. In our chapter, it is someone whom we trust, respect and have confidence in. Someone with good judgment who is prepared to lead the group from the starting point all the way to our destination. Someone who has a planned route and shares it with all who join the ride. They hold pre-ride meetings with all participants to tell us the route, advise us of any stops along the way, and discuss our speed on the road. Our Lead may ask questions about who is on medication, who may need to stop at shorter intervals (perhaps due to a smaller gas tank), who has a CB radio and who does not, etc. Our Road Captain covers hand signals for riders that are new to our group, too. Our Road Captain has been leading our rides for a few years now. We don t think twice about following them because they never let us down. We always arrive safely when we follow our Road Captain. We are very fortunate to have such a capable Road Captain in the Lead! We also have another Road Captain, trained in the GWRRA way, to bring up the rear of the group. This is our Drag bike, or Tail Gunner. These two (Lead & Drag) work together like Lennon and McCartney. The Drag seems to know what the Lead is thinking, securing the lane almost as the thought passes through the mind of our Lead. They communicate well with each other and with the rest of the team. They let the group know what is going on around us. They inform us about things, like telling us we will be turning in advance of the turn; when a car is attempting to pass the group on a 2-lane road; or when a car is passing on the right when we are on the highway. Our Lead and Drag always keep us aware of hazards on the road and all around us. We know they are looking out for the safety of the group. With Road Captains of this caliber, we feel very safe. We know we can enjoy the ride and watch the scenery with these two in charge. Wait! Stop right there! We all need to remember that even those of us in the middle of the formation have responsibilities. We are responsible to pass on the hand signals from the Lead, such as for single file, stagger formation, pointing out potholes and road kill, sand in the corners, and other hazards, etc. We need to be aware who we are riding with, too. The burden is not all on the Road Captains. We cannot sleep because we ride in the middle of the pack. We need to maintain safe spacing with the other bikes around us. And most importantly, we need to ride our own ride. We must stay alert. Hazards don t always appear in front of the Lead bike. Sometimes they come at the riders in the middle of the group. We need to be aware of our surroundings and always be prepared to react to the unexpected at all times. We must remember that, just because our Road Captain is leading us, we are not excused from thinking for ourselves and riding our own ride. We are all responsible for our own safety at all times. Never give that responsibility away. It is nice to have someone willing to help look out for your safety, but ultimately, it is your life. Guard it wisely! Be sure to ride your own ride, even while Team Riding! Have fun, and I'll see you soon!! Gordon Flowers Chapter Educator, CA-C Reprinted from an article by: Bruce & Melissa Thayer (Former MI Asst. District Rider Educators)

The little girl on Rocco s lap is Hailey, whose house burnt down around the holidays. Individuals donated lots of clothing and toys for Hailey and her family. We then had a ride to her grandparent's house on December 20th to give them to her. After this picture was taken she gave hugs and kisses to everyone. What a precious little girl.
