Chapter Director s Message On Sunday, we gathered with more family over at. Greetings, Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 25, for the Los Altos Festival of Lights Parade. Deb and I had our first experience last year and we had a lot of fun decorating and participating in the parade. I uploaded the information to the Yahoo Group sent to me by the parade committee. Please have a look at it because there are certain rules we must follow to retain our participation for the following years. Debra, Roger, and I attended the Seminar Presenter Development Program, (S.P.D.P.). What this course allows us to do once we teach our first class in front of a certified presenter from G.W.R.R.A. is to reach out to our chapter and any other chapter that would like to be trained and certified in anything that has to do with the rider education side of G.W.R.R.A. Stay tuned for our first class. These programs will allow folks to better understand G.W.R.R.A. s philosophy on safety. If anyone attended the workshop, (team riding, road captain, and co-rider) course that Terri and Nick gave at our home club house that would be an example. There are many more to be offered. Now for the hard part; I want to relate to you my near death experience and again how attending one of those classes actually worked in my favor. First, you all heard of how two of our participants was struck by a deer? Well, a few weeks before several of us that were on the ride had attended Doc Wong s first aid, CPR, and motorcycle accident scene management. Well that paid off. It was like everyone knew what to do and how to handle the situation, a class well worth it. Now back to my story. In Mammoth Deb and I took the trike course with Sal and Patti and about 10 other trikes. It paid off two weeks ago. I leave for work fairly early in the morning say 4:45. The two previous days I had taken the 650 Yamaha but decided that I liked riding the trike better. It is a whole lot more comfortable and quieter. As I am driving up 101 heading to S. San Francisco it was pretty much like any other morning. The weather was clear, several cars passed me doing 90, I would say. Let s put it this way when they passed me I thought I had stopped! As I was about a mile past the Menlo Park exits and in the number 1 lane, I noticed one red light in my lane. As I got closer I realized a car was sideways and that little red light was part of his tail light. From what I could gather in that moment was, he had hit the divider wall and spun into the number 1 and partially the number 2 lane. I had very little time to think. As I looked behind and to my right I noticed cars all around with an 18 wheeler in the far lane right beside me. All of a sudden I am turning (might I add gracefully) into the number 3 lane. By the way there was no break down lane besides the number 1 lane. As I accelerated once I got into that number 3 lane with stereo blasting and wind noise gushing I heard a loud crash of one car hitting another at freeway speeds. Didn t hear any rubber until after the stalled car was hit and what I heard was skidding of that second car probably getting swung around. It was so close that I thought I would be hit by flying parts. After getting to work and calling Debra I found out on the news it ended up to be 4 cars involved. Did that trike class help me? I would have to say so. I think any kind of class or PLP can definitely improve one s rider skill, etc I love when I see the seasoned riders of our chapter continuously working on improving their rider skills and also other skills of G.W.R.R.A. Last but not least, kudos to Debra for getting back up on two wheels with the help of Rocky at our past PLP. She felt comfortable under his assistance. We are so lucky that we have such fine educators in our chapter. With that I hope to see more participation from all our participants. Charlie & Debra CA-2S Chapter Directors, CA2S Shark Bytes 2

CA2S News Christmas is just around the corner and it is time to think about fillin' those stockings with wonderful gifts. Think AMAZON.COM for your purchases!!! This doesn t cost the buyer any extra, and a small percentage of the sale goes to the chapter (over $400 this year so far). It s easy, just follow the link below. Be sure to tell your friends and relatives too! Do you order online from Amazon? If so, help the chapter by using our special account. We get a % of the purchases that goes to our chapter funds. Use the special code/link below: November Visit the Silicon Valley Wings Yahoo Group at: Birthdays -editor I got a lot of ride pictures to share this month. Unfortunately, we re not able to include all of them in the newsletter. So there s 2 other places you can see more of the chapter photo s. 1) Photo Album on the Chapter Website is managed by John Raser. Here's a link: 2) The Silicon Valley Wings Yahoo Group, where members can share directly. Ruth Carter Dale Nicholas Verdi Jercha Bob Neitro Ron Taylor Anniversaries Les & Verdi Cook 5 I appreciate all the pics you send in to use in the newsletter. Also think of ways getting copies to John Raser for the website, Bill Hubbs as the historian, or the Yahoo Group where you can upload yourself. The winner of the Wing Nut this month is Gary Mouldenhauer. As nominated and told by Ron Green. Allegedly, during the Lake Isabella ride there was an incident with a bird in a room. After several tries to get the bird out, Gary apparently took a towel to the bird in an effort to get it out of the room. Well, the bird wound up unconscious and Gary was given the temporary title of "Bird Whacker". Gary claims no harm came to the bird, he gained no enjoyment from the incident, and it was not done in anger or retribution from the strategic bombings from this guys feathered friends. And, on an even more positive note, Gary won MK's scrumptious homemade Pumpkin pie in the raffle. He then auctioned it off gaining $12 bucks for Ride for Kids. Now, someone like that can't be all bad. CA2S Shark Bytes 3

the families and especially the children with how they dealt with this life altering diagnosis. We all have crosses to bear in life, but in hearing from these kids I am reminded to count my blessings. How they thrilled at something as simple as a motorcycle ride. It was an amazing display of simple happiness and courage. ACD s Message We will miss all y all, but look forward to hangin out and riding with our Chapter M friends in Sweet Home Alabama. Patti and I will be trekking out (I ll Be Tirking) about Nov 3rd and returning just after the first of the year. Depending on timing, we will try to hook up with the Fort Myers FL Chapter as well. The highlight of the month for us was the Ride for Kids in support of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation which took place on Sunday, October 7 in Fairfield. It was the Ride for Kids 20th anniversary. We could not have programmed in better weather. What a great day, and what an eye opener. We arrived about 9:00 or so after a nice ride from the Omega. There were already a number of bikes of all shapes and sizes from a 250 cc dirt bike to a 2300 cc Triumph with many more to come. It was great to see Lenny. After a donut breakfast and short briefing (ride meeting), we took off on a organized 60 mile ride that took us took us up to Lake Berryessa via Hwy 128 and looped us back to Solano College through some beautiful back country roads. The CHP blocked traffic at major points, but others just waited at stop signs and cross streets for the parade of motorcycles to pass by. I could not help but wonder as I looked at their faces do they have any idea how long this parade of motorcycles is? We were towards the front. Other than a couple of impatient drivers, there was a lot of community support for the ride. But, the ride was not the highlight nor was the lunch that immediately followed. The very personable emcee had a lot to say about PBTF and all the foundation was doing to bring hope to parents, but more important the children affected by this cancer. We heard story after story of the impacted lives and how much the foundation helped and meant to the families. I was awestruck by the courage of Our donation was $640 compared to some others that were in the thousands. Our contribution would have been $570 had it not been for Roger s auction purchases. In 2011 we donated $1052 I was proud of our contribution and was encouraged to contribute more in the future. My goal is to see our CA2S at least double the contribution for next year. Twenty years ago Northern California hosted its first Ride for Kids event, and many of the first participants were there on the 7th in Fairfield to celebrate the occasion. The crowd brought $124,015 in donations to the PBTF. A quote from one parent The technology that has been developed just in the amount of time [my son] has been sick has advanced enough to make a significant impact in his treatment, said Malcolm s dad, Duncan Sandiland. That is what Ride for Kids fundraising efforts have brought to our family. All the parents and children expressed heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for all the bikers that participated. There words were enough to moisten a number of eyes. If you have not yet done the Ride for Kids it is a must do!! At our regular meeting on October 21 I discussed the wing nut process as an ineffective tool for fund raising. There is just not enough interest to generate funding for PBTF via the wing nut. After my discussion at the meeting we garnered $83 between wing nut activity and two auctions. We got generous donation from the 50/50 winnings by Joel and Carrie who added another $37 bucks to the Ride for Kids. That is a total of $120 at one meeting about 1/5th of our total contribution for 2012!! I know we can do double our contribution next year. Thank you everyone for your support. -- Continued on next page -- CA2S Shark Bytes 4

For those who were not at the meeting my discussion centered in two specific areas; use of the Wing Nut award, and alternative fund raising venues for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (aka: Ride for Kids) Wing Nut process: Def: Given to the chapter member for the most "bone-headed" experience during of the month. Recipients are required to hold the wing nut for the month. Chapter members can "pay" to see the wing nut at any time for a dollar. If the bearer does not have the wing nut that person pays a buck. Nominations are a buck Good Fun Purpose is to have a little fun and raise money for our donation to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation: It is not working as a fund raiser Nominations are scarce and trivial or (as Verdi aptly put it) desperate at best Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation fund raiser some thoughts for another fund raising process around the wing nut: Could be as simple as a Bucket of Bucks tallied at end of meeting at the same time as the 50/50 Auction time: Bring in gear/stuff to auction - proceeds to kids bucket Rotary club process: (promotion, vacation, b day-anniv, new bike MK...) Items for Silent Auction (garage sale at monthly meeting) Give these ideas some thought. They are good discussion topics for the Business meeting on November 6. Kathryn made an excellent point at Saturday s meeting. We are not here to do things the same old way. Change is invigorating and promotes growth in any organization. Happy riding Sal and Patti Esposito ACDs Chapter CA2S Patti s Corner On Sunday, October 21, we had another great PLP. Thanks to Rocky who was able to secure the BikeSmart training range for our event. And, he even had enough influence to have several thousand people in attendance to watch oh, that was for the Earthquake Groundbreaking.well, it felt like we were important Thanks to Roger who brought our illustrious chuck wagon and the food to feed us. Charlie did a superb job barbequing the hot dogs for lunch. Unfortunately, we are not able to take advantage of this great facility very often, but we were very fortunate to be able to use it on Sunday. There were four two wheeled GWs and two trikes that went through the paces that Rocky and Roger set up. Learning in this environment ensures that you learn the right way rather than just doing it. It is important to take advantage of this opportunity to come out and practice maneuvers that you might have to use in an emergency one day. I took our 1500 trike and went through the paces just like everyone else. I went through the same weave routes, braking, and turning course as the two wheel bikes. I feel like I learned a great deal and appreciated Rock s insightful comments. I also appreciate the helpful comments from Roger Walls who gave me some good pointers. We have such great rider knowledge in our Chapter. I want to thank everyone for the support and encouragement during the PLP. I started out a little nervous but felt very confident in my skills at the end of the day. Most important I HAD FUN!! A San Jose Police Department motor officer stopped by to say hello. He talked about the practice that they do. They practice their skills regularly so that they can be ready for whatever comes up. That is just what the PLP does. His quote These are perishable skills. If you don t practice them, you can lose them. So, be sure to watch for the next PLP and plan to come out and learn with the best. It is a great environment to practice in. CA2S Shark Bytes 5

Safety Corner, by Rocky Fagundes Target Fixation Target fixation is actually a very complicated concept that is not easily described or explained, and too often becomes coached in oversimplified terms or phases that diminish its actual meaning or reduces its related concepts to simplistic sound bites. Target fixation: a process by which the brain is so focused on an observed object that the awareness of other obstacles or hazards can diminish. Notice the word brain versus eyes. Sometimes the eyes are connected to the brain/mind and sometimes they are not. It depends on how engaged the brain/mind is in the process of attention, perception, focusing, and multi-tasking. Target fixation examples include on the one hand running into something you are fixating on, and on the other hand running into something you are not looking at (looking elsewhere). As a motorcyclist in the former example, you could say the rider went where he/she was looking; in the latter example, one can say the rider didn t go where he/she looked. Perhaps it would be more helpful to separate the concept of target fixation into two separate processes. Eye fixation and brain/mind fixation. Eye fixation would be keeping the eyes intently focused on something while your brain/mind thinks of something else. Brain/mind fixation would be keeping your brain/mind focused on a task while your eyes look elsewhere. Neither fixation is ideal. If we ride on auto-pilot, meaning we are not 100% consciously thinking about our riding (daydreaming, thinking about work or relationships, enjoying the scenery, etc.) our sensori-motor functions are automated, where inputs and reactions needed to maintain our path are done largely without much conscious thought. In this condition, a rider isn t likely to perceive all possible traps (the what if s) lurking ahead. It is best to always have spatial awareness; that is, keep the eyes moving, have the brain/mind engaged in the task at hand, avoid fixations, and maintain awareness of areas surrounding your path of travel. The bottom line is that a rider tends to go where he/she looks. It is important to keep brain/mind on the task of Search, Evaluate, and Execute, particularly to identify factors that could lead to trouble as well as to have escape paths should something go wrong. In summary, as I mentioned at our last chapter safety talk, one needs to keep the special awareness around them as they travel down the road. Thus, allowing us to respond rather than react to a trouble scenario providing us that precious ¾ to 1 ½ seconds advantage to avoid a possible crash. 10 District Director s Message Moms who send care packages to our troops year round, attend a Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) event, or simply just Thank a Vet for their service. I just attended a quiet ceremony at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery where we (PGR) stood guard while 33 veterans with no next of kin were interned with honors. It was an honor to note how many GWRRA members were in attendance, and of special note the event was lead by our very own J.P. Rocco; Region F, IOY, supported by several other CAC & CA2K members (Tom Jefferies, Ken Knox, Jerry Kougel, Les Valdez, to name a few). DD Review, Well, Fall is upon us as you can tell by the rain we have received lately and some light snow falling in the Sierra s. What a difference a few weeks make. As we merge into the cooler wetter days, it s time to take advantage of all the training GWRRA has to offer. Please ask your Chapter Educators to host one of the Rider Ed Seminars that are available. If you don t have a certified instructor in your chapter, just ask and we will arrange to have someone come out and put on a seminar for you. This is a good time to take everything out of the storage compartments of your bike and inventory them. Check out that first aid kit you put in 4 years ago and ensure it is fresh and up to date. Throw away that old candy bar that you put in your trunk last summer. Add a fresh bottle of water or two while you re at it. Don t forget to do a very thorough T-CLOCK, and while you are at it, when is the last time you checked your coolant level, or changed it? These are just a few things to consider as our riding season slows down. California is blessed with year round riding weather; we just have to be ready for the changes. Rain gear instead of cool vests are a couple things you may be swapping out of the trunk. The entire event took less than an hour, but will remain in our hearts and memory for much longer, what a great day it turned out to be. November 11 th is Veteran s day, so please honor our Vets any way you can, and remember: Hang on we re going for a ride. Bill & Rene Johnson GWRRA California District Directors. Life is too short for drama & petty things, so laugh hard, love truly and forgive quickly. Live While You Are Alive. Forgive now those who made you cry. You might not get a second time. As we enter the holiday season, lets not forget those that are serving in the military around the world to help keep us safe. There are many ways you can easily honor them, the following are just a few ideas to consider. 13 Delta Ride, Saturday, Oct 6, by Bill Hubbs It was a fun day. We left the Omega Restaurant parking lot a little after 9 am and we didn't get back until after 6 pm. There were 5 bikes with 7 riders. Ron was in the lead, followed by Paul, Phil, Joe, Kathyrn & Bill, and Gary & Lori were in their trike as tailgunners. Ron did another great job of navigating us thru the backroads over to the Sacramento delta area. We stopped for lunch at Rogelio's in Isleton then drove around on the levies arriving at the charming old historic Chinese railroad worker s town of Lock. Afterwards we went across the delta twice on small ferries, finally stopping for ice cream before we headed back home to the south bay. 15 PLP Report, Rocky We had 4 wings and 2 trikes attend the PLP on Oct. 21st. Roger brought along the Chapter Bar-be-Que for our lunch break and Charlie & Debra arrived in time to help prepare the food. Debra was treated to a one-on one with Rocky to refresh her memory and skills on riding a motorcycle, and now feels, that in an emergency, she could handle the motorcycle should the need arise. We also had a guest visitor from the Santa Clara Police Dept. A motor-officer stopped by when he saw our bikes on the Bikesmart range, and showed us what an ST-1300 can do in the right hands. The officer mentioned something to us that rang very true to the reason we were all there, (besides for the food). Your skills for riding a motorcycle are "perishable". So that means, practice, practice, practice. CPR Training Sept 30 CA2S Shark Bytes 15
