2 Chapter Director s Message Think of it this way: if a family member was in need of first aid, c.p.r., or even a.e.d. if you were somewhere that had one, mall, etc you would be prepared. Also, for your fellow motorcyclist or just someone walking down the street, which happened in one of my past assistance for care. Hi All, Geez, another month gone by. There was plenty happening in March as you will hear from our volunteer officers. What I would like to stress in my talk is the value that I have received by attending a first aid/c.p.r. /a.e.d. class. As you have heard we had a couple of separate accidents on the weekend of the 23rd of March. I was in attendance on Saturday s incident. For the last 15 years I have been a regular to classes; either because of scuba, work or G.W.R.R.A. Now I don t claim to know everything and for the two motorcycle accidents and other incidents that I have been involved with I have come away with, I should have done this, or this could have been better. The fact is, so far I have been guided to properly treat those folks the best I could. What is even more amazing to me is that, before, that stuff would make me sick, nauseous, and feel like passing out. Now, when a situation comes up, the training kicks in and all the negative energy leaves. It reminds me when I was skydiving; I would be all nervous driving to the drop zone. Once there, I was still nervous, going up in the plane, why am I doing this going through my mind. Then the door would open and I would step out and take my position. Once there, training kicked in and I would become relaxed and peaceful. Please consider Doc Wong s upcoming class in May. You give up a day and you may be able to save a life, not a bad deal. For folks that regularly participate with Chapter 2S, the chapter will pay for Doc Wong s class, just bring back a certificate and receipt for our treasurer and that is it! Charlie & Debra CA-2S Chapter Directors The CA2S Annual Fundraiser and Garage Sale will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 3 & 4. This is a great time to clean out that closet, garage, etc. and get rid of some of that clutter - to make room for the new. Start saving your stuff to donate so we can replenish our chapter funds. We also have a great time during the 2 days, so plan to join in the fun (and a little work too). Here s some pics from last year.. First aid is the same for me. I encourage those folks that haven t taken the course from Doc Wong or wherever you feel comfortable JUST DO IT! The first accident I attended I had just completed Doc Wong s course 2 weeks prior as a refresher. The accident on this past Saturday I had just taken a refresher class at work 2 weeks prior. 4 motorcyclist skills and awareness. Wow, that says it all. Who among you doesn t buy in to safe riding, reducing injuries/fatalities and increasing your skills? REP is a big deal folks. GWRRA's Rider Education Program has continued to grow at a phenomenal rate, showing the commitment of Association members to be among the safest, best prepared highway users in the nation. Be one of them. ACD s Message LET S ALL GET INVOLVED There is only one way to make things happen in any organization that is to get involved in every aspect that you can. With that comes success for the organization, more importantly success for you. Success for GWRRA, CA2S and you is measured by how much FUN you are having, how much KNOWLEDGE you are gaining, and how SAFE you are riding. The more you Get Involved the more you will get out of our Chapter and GWRRA. That is your return. Once you have buy in you become a stake holder in the organization. Being a stake holder gives you ownership in what is going on and the direction of the Chapter. Chapter involvement is not limited to paying dues, attending a meeting now and then, and an occasional ride. It is much more than that. We are under the umbrella of the California District, and the CA District is under the umbrella of the Region and so it goes. There are plenty of things to do at those levels. We had a great time at the District Convention in Mammoth and are certainly looking forward to the next in Visalia. The Region convention is happening over Memorial Day weekend in St. George Utah. Talk about a beautiful ride coupled with a lot of fun and networking with other Gold Wing riders/members. Our educators, Rocky and Roger, are committed 100% to the REP program and both are REP Level 4 (Master) recipients. Wouldn t that patch look great on your vest? For a complete understanding of the requirements for qualification at each level, contact our Chapter Educators Rocky and Roger. Getting Involved in REP is easy: RIDER EDUCATION PROGRAM LEVEL I: SAFETY BY COMMITMENT Rider Requirements: Express your commitment to being a safe rider and submit the form verified by a GWRRA officer. Co-Rider Requirements: Express your commitment to being a safe rider and submit the form verified by a GWRRA officer. That s it! Show commitment to be safe and you are in the program!! Get Involved! This Chapter does not run by itself. Sometimes Charlie and Deb ask for help in handling or managing a particular task. Step up to the plate and Get Involved. Spread those wings a bit and jump in to help. We have plenty of positions for folks to contribute in and out of the officer ranks. Become a Chapter Officer, or take one of the other positions. New blood means new ideas and growth for the Chapter. It is your organization. Make things happen. Get Involved. We follow GWRRA guidelines and find them efficient and effective in managing smooth operations for our Chapter. Each year the CDs put forth goals for their Chapters. Without Goals we have no direction. Become acquainted with GWRRA and Chapter operations. Even the seasoned GWRRA member should find something of interest here. Getting involved in GWRRA Chapter activities will allow you to enjoy GWRRA to the fullest, but you have to Get Involved. But, Getting Involved starts with the Chapter. The more you do, the more you get out of what you are doing. How much fun you have is really up to you. We are very excited to see some new faces at our meetings. Some came once and joined GWRRA almost immediately. We know these new folks came to CA2S looking to meet new friends with like interests and be involved with a Gold Wing riding group. They came to the right place CA2S is all of that. We know they will Get Involved. Attend Chapter events: We had an incredible PLP (Parking Lot Practice) on March 17. PLP is like going to the motorcycle gym for a workout. Rocky and Roger did an incredible job in setting up, putting us through our paces, and providing us with instruction as well as techniques oh yeah, the food was great too. I don t care how seasoned the rider, we all learn something at a PLP. However, you can t learn anything if you don t go. So, Get Involved. So, how else do we Get Involved? What can we do? One of the best programs GWRRA has to offer is the Rider Education Program. The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle riding environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing Continued on next page CA2S Shark Bytes 4

5 ACD report continued: Encourage membership. We all run into folks on Gold Wings, some of which never heard of GWRRA. Give them one of our free breakfast cards, and invite them to a meeting to see what we are about. Put them in touch with our MECs (Membership Enhancement Coordinators) Ron and Danita. Put out an impromptu ride! Hey, riding motorcycles is why we are here. Wild Bill had a great one last month. We had nine bikes participate on a beautiful ride! Volunteer to lead a ride if asked. Ron can t do it all. Jump in and give a hand. Get involved! There are many more things we do. We take classes, specifically first aid and GWRRA sponsored classes. You saw Charlie & Deb s article above. First Aid is an essential element. It takes so little effort but can bring so much. Think of it, you can save a life or at the very least give comfort to a fallen rider. Currently the Chapter is picking up the price so Get Involved. Some of Doc Wong s other classes: Braking Confidence & Skills Workshop Motorcycle Ergonomics & Optimal Riding Position Workshop Doc Wong Basic Motorcycle Maintenance Just to mention a few. We have our own maintenance/repair works shops with a lot of great knowledge and experience. You can either contribute what you have or enjoy the benefit of what others have to share assisting with the maintenance of you bike. You can help the Chapter by promoting advertising in our newsletter at motorcycle focused business you visit. You can attend meetings at other Chapters and meet some really great folks. Most of all you can Get Involved with CA2S. We have our yearly Garage Sale. And, then there is the Ride For Kids event. And the beat goes on. I leave you with this challenge. The next time you see Charlie and Deb, ask them; How can I Get Involved. Together, we make things happen in CA2S! Sal Sal and Patti Esposito ACDs Chapter CA2S Patti s Corner Wow!!! How do I top Sal s column That was great!!! For once in my life, I feel speechless. I couldn t have said it any better. The people who join GWRRA are great people. If you visit other chapters, you will find fun and warm people everywhere. Sal and I have the privilege to participate with Alabama Chapter M. Those folks are just as friendly and welcoming as California Chapter 2 S. We also had an opportunity to be in contact with the Fort Myers chapter in Florida. Although we could not attend their meeting, they invited us to join on any rides on their calendar. And, they are a busy, busy chapter. When you Get Involved by attending other chapter events, you will find warm, friendly, welcoming people everywhere you go. It is a great way to meet new friends, go on some great rides, see some new country, learn some new things, have new experiences and remember, memories are better than dreams. Rather than wishing about a ride you want to do, go out and make it happen plan an impromptu ride and share it with others. You will be glad that you did. Spring is here, the trees and bushes are blooming it s time to start riding some more. Patti CA2S Shark Bytes 5

9 Safety Corner, by Rocky Fagundes What I Never Will Forget! In my life, I have learned some things the hard way, and some things the easy way. Mostly the hard way! Life experiences are what bring us to make choices and evaluate theories and ideas that define our daily lives. Once we come to a decision about something, we usually stick to our well thought-out premises. This can sometimes go unchallenged for quite some time. And, with longer periods of time, we can become complacent about many important decisions that can affect our well-being. Where is all this going? Well the title of the newsletter should tell you something. Many of us have ridden for many years on a number of different motorcycles. In different stages of our development as riders, in many different climates we have put in many miles and have the stories to back em up. Because so many miles have passed beneath us without any incident, we begin to believe (sub-consciously at least) that we are beyond that early rookie stage, and developed into a seasoned rider that is darn near impervious to anything that could cause us to have to use our highly talented skills to avoid any near misses or whatever comes our way. We re invincible! Well guess what folks! I recently witnessed, first hand, exactly what a sudden impact with asphalt can do to a 900 lb. motorcycle and human body. In probably less than 6 seconds, and a couple of hundred feet, one was left un-repairable, and the other required surgery to be made right again. Those of you that either read, or were on the Occidental ride know exactly what I am talking about. One moment we were rolling along enjoying a great spring weather day and wind therapy, and the next dodging motorcycle parts and a fellow rider laying sprawled on the road. As I was the rider directly behind this incident, my account of it, will not come close to the impact it had on me as the Chapter Educator and fellow rider. Many of the injuries sustained could have been avoided by just wearing ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time). Not just any gear, but proper riding gear made for the protection of the rider. An armored jacket, armored riding pants, over-the-ankle riding boots, leather gloves with Kevlar protection, and the most important item a FULL-FACE helmet. I personally had to cut what was left of the chin strap from what was left of the helmet so the facial lacerations could be immediately attended to by myself and Charlie at the accident scene. After the initial trauma, we discovered that even the sunglasses that were being worn had signs of asphalt scraping on them!! This is an experience that I will never forget. And, has made me even more determined to advocate ATGATT. You never know when something is going to come your way. Roger s recent get-off is a perfect example. While he did nothing to cause the mishap, because he was a firm believer in ATGATT, he rolled away with only minor fraction burns and a bruise. Bruiser (his bike) was not so lucky. We never get ready for a ride thinking about the what if scenario. We are thinking about what route we are going to take, where we are going to have lunch, and maybe we give the bike a quick once over just to be sure. There is another saying that I think also sums up the risk we undertake as motorcyclists. Don t dress for the ride. Dress for the crash! If we are always vigilant about our ride preparation with a TCLOCS inspection, and putting on the proper protective gear, we are one step closer to reducing the odds and managing the risk. Also, remember the mental preparation before and during the ride. Being in the right frame of mind is important to enable you to concentrate on your riding. Fatigue, use of medication causing drowsiness, or alcohol should all be avoided on a ride day. Using the SEE strategy (Search, Evaluate, Execute), keeps us from having to use our super human skills we have developed over the years in the first place. So if we approach our next ride with the proper attitude, the proper riding gear, and the mental readiness that a crash can happen to anyone, anytime: We will be managing our risk taking and hopefully be on our way to enjoying many, many more trouble free, accident free miles ahead of us and setting an example for all other motorcyclists that we encounter on our journeys. 10 District Director s Message Members Helping Members As we reflect back on the previous month let s revisit the rallies we attended starting off with CA-1C in Palm Springs. CA-1C had a terrific rally, but with only 25 pre-registrations and over 100 people in attendance, their expectations were definitely exceeded. Thanks to all of you who came and supported one of our smallest chapters, but this does bring into focus one concern: When a chapter, much less a small one, tries to base their projections for attendance on the number of pre-registrations and those numbers are exceeded three-fold, that chapter has a major disadvantage for food purchase. As we were leaving CA-1C s rally there was an incident when one of our members dropped their bike. Looking back on this incident, it is amazing how many members stopped to assist that rider and this incident serves as a reminder that as a GWRRA member you never ride alone. It amazes us and warms our hearts to see so many people that truly care about your well being. Vincent and I have personally experienced this a few times, and it really makes you feel good to know that you are surrounded by people who actually do care. A big thanks to all that gave a helping hand to a fellow rider that day. As we move on to The Rally in the Valley that was held in beautiful Las Vegas at the Palace Station, we were again in awe! CA-1R welcomed 169 members at their ice-cream social on Friday evening. What a tribute to a chapter that graced us with such poise, talents, and enthusiasm and we hope you all supported the vendors that came to their rally. CA-1R s theme this year was aviation and we were entertained with funny skits, great prizes and fabulous food. As we started out the evening, we were graced by Nancy Martin, the widow of Ray Martin, who passed away last year. Ray was one of the biggest cheer leaders for GWRRA and his chapter. Nancy spoke to the crowd thanking everyone for the help, love and support she was given through the months, and days before Ray s passing, and again, we go back to members helping members. Nancy spoke of the many meals that were delivered to them when they both were going through their chemotherapy, and how members sat with them and helped them; yet another example of the members of GWRRA helping each other. A story was told during that evening from one of CA-1R s members, Kevin, of how he had a fabulous year in business and how he wanted to give back to those in need. Two of the grand prizes were a $ airline ticket voucher along with $ spending cash. As he reflected, and looked back on what he wanted to do, he realized, that just maybe, they would not like the airline he selected for the voucher. So, instead of a voucher, each prize became $ in cash. Kevin wanted to touch a life, and help someone fulfill a dream and knew that $ would facilitate that. Another example of members helping members! Kevin shared a story of how helping someone might just change their life. For all of us who want to help those in need, but hesitate, listen to your heart just as Kevin did. He was in a fast food restaurant and there was a man who was hungry, he just wanted a bowl of chili. The chili was purchased for him, and as Kevin watched him and saw how hungry and appreciative he was for receiving his chili it touched his heart, he knew this man was genuine. He went to him and laid down a $ bill in front of him. The man surprised and his eyes as big as saucers, thanked him and God for the gracious gift. He asked him his name, and Kevin said you do not need to know; I m just a man wanting to help another man. A year or so later, a man came up to Kevin, and said you don t remember me do you? I m the man you bought that bowl of chili for and gave the $ to. He wasn t surprised Kevin did not recognize him, because he was well dressed and groomed, not as he last saw him. The gesture of kindness that day is what turned that man s life around. He took the money graciously and it helped changed his life. As Kevin listened to him, he asked him what is your name, the man replied, you do not need to know, I m just a man thanking another man for their kindness. Another example of members helping members, in this case it was not another member, but it s people like Kevin that make GWRRA what it is. So now we, as your District Directors, are asking you to continue as you always have in, helping another member of GWRRA. You all know and remember Val Tait of CA-1M, who passed away last December. Val was a wonderful man, husband and advocate for GWRRA. We received an from Barbara Tait asking for our help in getting the word out about Relay for Life, a fundraiser for cancer research, which is scheduled for June 1 st. This inspired us to put on the website a page entitled Members helping Members. This page is where members can post any needs they have right now. Let us all support Barb Tait, and her team Cancer Slayers the best we can by going to this page and clicking on the icon Relay for Life at the end of her message. Her original goal was to raise $ , she has now raised it to $ and she has raised $ to date. Congratulations to Barb and we know with the help of our GWRRA friends she will achieve her goal. The website is: As we look forward to April, don t forget the upcoming rallies. April is full of rallies, so please try to attend what you can and try to pre-reg if at all possible. Our newest and northern most chapter, CA-2R in Redding, is having their rally entitled Three Shasta s Ride on April 6th. Please come out and support them, let them see what GWRRA is all about with our members helping members philosophy. The next weed end, we have CA-1S out of Ventura, on April 13th; this is definitely an affordable rally as onsite registration is only $6.00. On April 20th, CA-1A is having their Coyote Round-Up. Moving on to the last week of April we have Chapter CA-1D they re having a Non-Rally- Rally on April 27th. No registration, no grand prize, and no door prizes. Just come out and support them, have breakfast and you ll have an opportunity to win some serious cash with their 50/25/25. And last but not least is CA-1Q with their Rendezvous with Q on Sunday, April 28th. Let s not forget the upcoming rallies in May, which is also another full month, including the Region Convention over Memorial Day weekend in St. George, Utah. Check the district website at: for their rally information. Our website has had a facelift, so if you ve not visited it in a while, check it out. Until next month, ride well and ride often. 13 Occidental Trip Report By Ron Green Saturday, March 23 was our scheduled day ride up to Occidental. We started from the Omega Restaurant with nine bikes and headed up the peninsula via 280 with our first stop at the Junipero Serra rest stop just north of the 92/280 interchange. We met Gary and Lori and now with a total of 10 bikes we broke into two groups of five bikes each. Gary and I swept/led group 1 and Roger and Danny led/swept group 2. We continued up 280 to the Pacifica exit and cut over to Skyline (35) which we followed down to the Great Highway. This took us down by the ocean, past the Cliff House, the Legion of Honor, and through the Sea Cliff neighborhood of San Francisco. If anyone has $2 M - $5 M, I think there were a couple of fixer uppers for sale. Once past the Presidio we jumped on the Golden Gate Bridge, man what a fantastic view-- no fog and a sunny day. Our next stop was for gas just before Corte Madera. Route change!! That s the great thing about being the leader, you get to improvise. Instead of traveling via Sir Francis Drake Hwy, we went further up 101 to Lucas Valley Road and headed into the back country. Once off the freeway, we formed up into one group. When we got close to Petaluma, Roger broadcast his good byes and headed off to visit his new grandson. The remainder of the group continued through some very scenic countryside including rolling green hills and ranch land populated with lots of farm animals including dairy cows, horses, sheep and at least one Llama, or was that an Alpaca?. Just after turning onto Hwy 1 for the remaining 12 miles to Occidental, we had an unfortunate incident. Von went off the road and crashed. He was taken by ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with face lacerations, a broken tibia and a couple of small bones in his hand. We all waited for the tow truck to make sure that the bike was properly taken care of. The last thing we saw was the tow truck heading off to a local repair shop. The good news in all of this is that the worst situations bring out the best in people the help of strangers, the professionalism of the fire and EMT personnel, and the response from the CA-2S folks on the ride: A rancher just across the field saw the accident, jumped on her quad, and was quickly on the spot to render assistance. I believe she was the first to call 911. Our own folks managed the scene until the emergency teams arrived traffic control was provided by Danny and Rick to the south and Gary and Lori to the north, Charlie and Rocky provided immediate first aid and comfort for Von, Charlie s cell phone was one, if not the only, cell phone in service and made contact with the road service, Doug provided global positioning that was given to the towing service, and Bill took pictures. What an OUTSTANDING JOB by everyone!!!!! The fire department arrived on the scene to provide medical assistance, followed by an EMT truck, and then the CHP who took over the accident site. We checked in at the Hospital before heading home and Von wasn't in a room yet so we couldn't actually visit him. Charlie did talk to him via cell phone to confirm the extent of his injuries and to confirm that his relatives had been contacted. And Charlie will continue to keep the chapter updated on his condition. Asking $300 Contact Sal: BVR@att.net Well, they say things happen in three's... from Ron Green I was running barely on time when I headed out to the bikes. I decided to take one of the noisy ones and since I had checked tire pressure a few days before I was just going to get on it and go. As I approached the bike I noticed that the rear tire didn't look quite right. I got on and as I backed it out of the garage (no reverse on this bad boy) it didn't feel right. So I took the extra time to check the tire pressure--5 psi!!! I put that bike in the garage and pulled out the quiet one (the one with the reverse). After confirming tire pressure I was off. When I got home I pulled the ailing bike out of the garage, put it on the bike stand, and sure enough there was a nail right in the middle of the tread. The moral of this story: If it doesn't look right and/or doesn't feel right chances are it isn't right. Never assume that because you checked the tire pressure a day or so ago that everything is still good to go. While this was not a major incident, hopefully we have gotten to the third thing and can start to put the bad stuff behind us. Rocky should now have a wealth of current material for his safety talks... CA2S Shark Bytes 14

15 2013 Couple of the Year Danny & Sandy Shewey are the new COY for 2013, taking over for Sal & Patti Esposito who are now the ACD s. A little bit about us. We ve been with GWRRA and CA2S since 2005, after purchasing our first Goldwing, a Interstate. Having put a little over 55K miles on that bike and trailer combo, we bought a 98 SE in 2010, and have over 20K miles so far. We ve taken a couple cross country trips to the 2009 and 2011 Wing Dings, mixing camping and hoteling, a family reunion, visiting friends, and numerous parks and attractions along the way. Last year we took a 4K ride thru S.Oregon & Idaho (family reunion again), to Salt Lake and back through Fallon, Nev, and N. California to our home in San Jose. We try and help out with chapter activities, go on as many rides as we can, and both enjoy the camaraderie and friendships we ve made in the chapter. Danny took on the newsletter editor position in 2006 and tries to make it interesting, informative, including pictures to highlight the fun we all enjoy having. In 2013, Sandy took on the Awards & Special Recognition position. Danny enjoys doing his own motorcycle maintenance (zen?), and Sandy is happy to be a co-rider, navigator, and keeps Danny from getting too crazy. We ve lived in the Bay Area since 1976, and have immediate family here and in the Merced area. Raised 2 boys now grown and on their own, and recently helping with our elderly parents. Danny retired (early) in 2007 from HP, and Sandy continues to work as a Sales Manager for Interior Plant Design. It s an honor to be the COY, and we are looking forward to continue participating and helping where we can with chapter activities.
