Chapter Director s Message WING DING 39 GRAPEVINE, TX The only way to get the full impact out of GWRRA is to get involved with the organization. The only way to get the full impact out of your chapter is to get involved with what your chapter is doing. This is Patti and my 5th Wing Ding. GRAPEVINE TEXAS ROCKS!! Time was too short for us to take the motorcycle so we took the other wings. Our flight to Dallas Fort Worth was easy, smooth and on time if you could believe it. We got to our hotel and found it to be a beautiful two room suite. After checking in, we went right down to the Gaylord convention center and registered for the convention Wing Ding 39. It was already busy and we were giving and getting lots of hugs from good friends. After a great dinner of blackened red fish at Papadeaux restaurant, we headed to downtown Grapevine for the meet-and-greet prior to Wing Ding officially starting. There was a huge GWRRA presence in downtown Grapevine. We had some good times walking around and greeting folks and saying hello to friends we hadn t seen in months. It was a pleasure to run into Ron and Danita Bratcher. There was a free dinner, drinks, and, of course, frozen custard ice cream. The town was decked out to see us with banners and welcoming signs throughout the downtown area. They even painted Wing Ding 39 symbols on several pieces of pavement throughout the downtown area. Check out the photos from Wing Ding 39! The picture of the Grapevine calaboose showed built in June of Alongside of the Grapevine calaboose, Patti is pointing to the Grapevine Texas Hanging Tree... We spent a good deal of time walkin the streets of a cute and quaint little town with a Texas hometown flair. Without Wing Ding, I doubt we would ever had the pleasure of spending good times in such a cool place. After a long day, we headed back to our hotel. We stayed at the Comfort Inn about 5 miles from the convention center and it was quite a nice place. We actually had a two room suite with a walk in closet at almost half the price of the Gaylord. Good job Patti!!! Looks like we made the right decision here. Wednesday August 30th On Wednesday, we headed down to the convention center for the opening ceremonies. As always, the Opening Ceremonies were well done. The posting of the colors is always impressive and inspirational. Not one person took a knee!!! We walked in and found a table with John, Bob and Donna Fletcher, and moments later, we were met by Ron and Danita Bratcher. Counting Bob Gilbert, we had a total of six folks representing CA2S at Wing Ding 39. We were tempted to pull Ron and Danita into the mix and claim 8, but they were wearing the wrong vest. There were several International chapters represented at Wing Ding. There was a group of about 10 from the country of Israel. Anita Alkire announced that the next Wing Ding for 2018, #40, will be held in Knoxville, Tennessee. Continued on next page CA2S Shark Bytes 2

After opening ceremonies, everybody made a beeline to the vendor area. Patti and I made some obligatory purchases and spent most of the time greeting, saying hello, and giving hugs to good friends. To me that is the best part of Wing Ding or any of these Rallies. We took some time to tour the huuuuuge Gaylord Resort and Atrium in the center of the Hotel. This place is quite impressive. During our walk, we ran into Bob and Donna who were enjoying lunch at the Cantina along the Riverwalk. Yep, they had a Riverwalk right there inside the resort. There are always some very good classes at these conventions. One could never get enough education. An especially good presentation was made by Law Tigers who talked about the right kinds of insurance coverage to have. We all have insurance, but is it enough when we consider the high cost of medical these days. Take a look at your Law Tigers registration packet folder and look at the back cover for some really good advice. I told him we had Sky Med and he said excellent choice. He would not be without air medevac coverage. It is never too late to make a few more passes through the vendor area. It is a great place to meet and greet friends that we haven't seen throughout the year. After the day's events, Patti and I headed to downtown Grapevine to enjoy some local fair at a local restaurant. We had dinner at Dino's Chop House which is a family-run business in Grapevine that has been here for a very long time. Thursday was pretty much the same as Wednesday, and we enjoyed spending more money at the vendor area. There were more classes and more things to be involved with. One of the more interesting events was the Director s Forum. Anita spent a good amount of time explaining the changes that are happening in GWRRA and focused most on the Rider Education/Ride Coordinator functions. Patti will talk more about that in her newsletter article. Friday was full of more classes and, of course, the inevitable vendor area. Patti and I continued to pay our dues buying some things we don't need. I was somewhat disciplined with Doug not being there. I won t buy anything mechanical or electronic without an OK from my CA2S Consultant/Guru. Friday night was the evening dinner which touted as a barbecue. The main course was barbecue chicken and it was very good. Hats off to the hotel that managed a few thousand people through the lines in an easy manner. Obviously this wasn t their first rodeo. Hats off to J&M who sponsored the dinner and donated $6,150 in prizes. After dinner, there was an amusing magic show. The evening ended with a bang with a fireworks display over Lake Grapevine. That ended Wing Ding 39 for Patti and I who had to fly back to San Jose on Saturday. All in all Wing Ding 39 was a success. As always we had a great time with friends and our extended family. Let me say this one more time because I think it needs repeating: The only way to get the full impact out of GWRRA is to get involved with the organization. The only way to get the full impact out of your chapter is to get involved with what your chapter is doing. Now That s the spirit of CA-2S!! Sal CD Guy CA2S Shark Bytes 3

ACD s Message What have you done lately? Over the last year we have seen growth in our chapter participation and recognition at local & the national level. What does that say about CA-2S? We are not only making things more fun for our chapter, but also for other chapters around us setting an example to model. How? With our magnificent MEC couple coordinating our social events: With our leadership the Esposito way: With our new Education Team French X2: With our Ride For Kid Coordinator Mr. Bashful. With Danny our editor & the award winning newsletter to name a few. These folks put in a lot of time and effort to make everything we do a success. Right now the core group has just returned from Wing Ding. CA-2S was well represented at Grapevine TX. Check out their articles for all the details of the 39 th annual Wing Ding. I m sure you won t be disappointed. Ask yourself how can I get in on the fun and planning of the upcoming events? Well, first check your calendar and pick something you might like to help out with. Start there as a volunteer and see where it goes. Haven t yet heard anyone complain about getting involved. You always get back more than you put in. The friendships we are making through GWRRA will last us even beyond our membership. We are an extended family that is there for you when needed. Be it on the road to a rally or at home with a mechanical problem on your bike. Maybe, even a referral for something on a personal level you need help with. You can count on your fellow members. So get involved! Have FUN! And remember that the more we all participate the more fun and memories we can make together. 7 Patti s Corner Sal and I mentioned that we went to the Directors Forum while we were at Wing Ding to learn about the new changes within GWRRA. Anita did a good job of describing the changes and the reason for those changes. The idea is to try to reach existing members who are not currently participating. National wants to reach out to members who belong to GWRRA who are not currently participating in chapter activities. Anita spent a lot of time discussing the changes to the chapter educator vs the ride coordinator role in the chapter. It is not that education is no longer part of the chapter events, it is just that is to be a kinder, gentler rider education with all of us looking out for each other rather than the responsibility falling to one individual. They still expect that there will be education discussions at chapter gatherings vs. an education lecture. Perhaps, some chapter educators were a little over zealous with their position. I don t expect much will change in our chapter most of our safety talks at chapter gatherings are already discussions with a lot of input from the experienced attendees. Additionally, there will be less paperwork required at the chapter level.always a welcome change. Anita also talked about the chapter participants having fun and, that s just what we are always trying to do bring fun to you in every chapter activity. She spent time on the Social aspect and increasing social activities. We ve been doing that and it has worked. A lot of what Anita expressed as changes we are already doing in CA2S. Speaking of fun and upcoming activities, watch your next weekend, there is a ride to Tony s in Tamales Bay.. I can t wait for that. It is one of my most favorite rides of all time. There is just so much fun for you to take advantage of you just need to come out and get involved. And. 14 District Director s Message This article is being written as we are traveling from rally to rally. We ended last month s article as we were leaving for Utah District Rally. We had great fun, and although we did not win any large prizes, we were excited to get numerous door prizes (which we have been carrying around the country). The best part is being with fellow wingers. We traveled on to visit friends and attend my 50 th class reunion in Michigan. From there we have traveled back west and are now at Colorado s District Rally, Aloha Colorado, an uproarious time of games, hula skirts, rides, food, and ice cream. From here we will travel back east and south to Grapevine, TX for Wing Ding. This trip has been, and expect to continue to be, a great time with wingers from all over the country, many we know and many new friends. Although we had intended to travel these 7 weeks on our bike (or trike) we ended up needing to go by car. Our youngest son received a job in Liberty, MO the week before we were leaving, and we got the privilege of transporting some of his belongings to him on our way to Michigan. As much as we miss riding the bike, there were several days we were glad we had the car today for one rain and hail. We anticipate a wonderful time at Wing ding and look forward to seeing some of our friends we haven t seen for a year or so. Then it is a quick trip home (after 7 weeks away) to finish up the details of our CA District Rally in Mammoth. We look forward to seeing many of you there. There had been much speculation and discussion about changes in the GWRRA restructuring, but one thing does not change our desire to have fun, our love for motorcycles, the joy of riding (even if it is on 4 wheels now more than 2 or 3), and being with our friends and GWRRA family. We can always count on that. Bear Hugs, Nancy & Bob Clark [gwrra.mamabear@gmail.com] CA2S Shark Bytes 14

Motorist Awareness, By Bob Siler Hey gang! This is your MIA MA guy. I know I ve been absent for some time but work has had me buried for a while. Looks like that will continue for at least 6 more weeks. That caused me to miss the last MA event at the John Erreca rest stop. A great big thank you to those who could attend on August 12th. Sal, Doug, Roger, Ralph and Paul A. all made it down for what sounds like a very successful day of MA interaction with the public. What made it even better this time is they were able to park the bikes in and around the rest stop near the rest rooms and on the lawn. Sal and I had discussed this last year but were afraid we would get into trouble. This time the groundskeeper suggested that very thing. I m sure this helped to draw even more attention than we have gotten before. The guys generously let people sit on the bikes for some photo ops which put some definite smiles on their faces. This looked to me to be the most successful visit CA2S has had since we started going down to the rest stops. Like Sal always says MA saves lives. We have another visit tentatively scheduled for December so if you haven t made it out for one yet, come on down and pitch in. They are very rewarding and fun to do. A special thanks to Sal for the picture donations for this article. CA2S Shark Bytes 15

Couple of the Year (COY) Ralph and Robynn French Nine months into the year, we could have had a baby. Fortunately, something even better is in our future. Robynn would rather have the baby. The CA District Rally is the end of this month. For those who are not aware, we will be competing in the COY competition. It is not as easy as becoming the Chapter COY, which is an honor for us, but requires full attention to detail. We sent our resume, as have the other two couples competing, to the District COY for review. We have inspected our vests to ensure everything matches and tried on our coordinating outfits to ensure they fit. His does, mine does not. The final preparation is in the speech publically presented prior to opening ceremonies. Truth be told, we have no difficulty presenting our speech, as God knows Robynn can talk forever but the real challenge is not seeing the friendly CA-2S faces in the audience. Soooooooooooooooo, here is our request. We would like to as many of your faces as possible, we are representing you, our chapter. The presentations begin about 3:45. Ralph and I would like to thank you all of you for the support you have given during that past nine months and for selecting us to embody the spirit of CA-2S. We will continue to do our best in representing the chapter in a positive light. 17 Hello again. The riding season is slowly entering the winter slow months. Usually we do the preparation for the next season while enjoying our cooler fall weather rides. This is also the time to look at replacing worn riding cloths while taking advantage of sales. We need to look at the clothing that makes riding comfortable and also provide protection from the elements and God-forbid, an accident. Motorcycle-friendly jackets and pants are becoming more common, but it can still be difficult to tell whether the garment will protect, or if it was just designed to look like it will. CE certification for an entire garment just isn t very common for jackets and pants at least, not in the U.S. so you have to use your best judgement. There are four main areas to consider when purchasing protective jackets or pants: armor, materials, construction, and fit. Protective Armor: Not Optional CE-certified shoulder, elbow and kneepads are marked EN1621-1, which is the limb standard; back protectors are marked EN A back protector that s also marked Level 2 or B2 passes a higher standard than one marked just EN Both EN and EN indicate the energy-absorbing characteristics and the minimum coverage but not the shape of the armor. Type B pads are larger than Type A in either application, and better for motorcycle use. CE-approved elbow/shoulder (for jackets) and hip/knee armor (for pants). Back protectors are good to have as well. All CE-approved armor should have an imprinted CE marking watch out for fakes! Acceptable: Some gear comes only with pockets for armor, which is fine. Just make sure you know what kind of armor will fit in those pockets. Some brands make their pockets to only fit their branded armor which, again, is fine, if that armor is CE approved. Continued on next page CA2S Shark Bytes 17

Beware: No armor or no pockets for armor, or included armor that isn t CE approved or has a fake CE imprint. There s one exception to the armor rule, and that s an armored shirt. If you wear an armored shirt (IE Bohne) underneath your jacket, you can buy whatever abrasion-resistant jacket you like without worrying about armor. This allows you to take a bulky coat off and just wear a long sleeve or light jacket with no armor. Recommendations: SAS-Tec, Knox Armor, D3O anything with a CE certification that you find comfortable. Places like Road Rider sell separate armor that you can cut and replace non-ce armor in a coat. Materials: High-Quality Super-Fibers There are a few forums that discuss these topics, but I have yet to find anything that links to the original source material. Personally, I ve tried a few double-layer Kevlar garments and found them to be bulky. I ve been wearing denim jeans with no armor and have a pair of Bohne armor under the jeans. I will see if that works out better. I can always take the Bohne armor off and have nice jeans. What is Dyneema? Dyneema is simply the strongest fiber made. Now used in bullet-proof vests, it is a fiber interspersed with other fibers such as denim. Ideal are pants with full coverage of an abrasion-resistant material that includes a high percentage of a brand-name super-fiber like Kevlar, Dyneema or Cordura. With Dyneema, around 60% Dyneema fibers is the current industry standard for a single-layer abrasionresistant garment. 62% Dyneema, can slide for 3.75 seconds before wearing through (compared to 0.4 seconds for normal denim). 500 denier Cordura is the minimum for protection (denier being a measurement of fabric weight). Dyneema pants are fairly new and cost an arm and a leg, but might save an arm or leg from injury. Draggin jeans uses a combination of Dyneema and Kevlar in their jeans that gave significant a boost in abrasion resistance. Acceptable: Partial coverage of a second-layer of an abrasion-resistant super fiber. Good examples of this are jeans with a second layer of Kevlar on the rear, hips and knees. Or Bohne armor under light riding pants. Beware: Poor coverage of abrasion-resistant super-fibers (or none at all), thin leather, polyester-blend fabrics And so on. Construction: How strong are the seams? Most people pay close attention to materials and armor when talking about motorcycle gear and rightly so. But one aspect of protective gear that frequently gets overlooked is the seams. Bad seams can be the Achilles heel of otherwise protective gear: It doesn t matter if you re wearing the thickest, toughest leathers and level 2 armor, if the seams burst open when you hit the pavement you may as well have been riding naked. Ideal: Strong, high-tensile nylon thread, multiple lines of stitching on each seam, and most of the seam is hidden from the outside of the garment. The more lines of stitching used, the less likely the entire seam is going to fail. And if stitching is mostly hidden, it will be less likely to fail under abrasive conditions. Continued on next page CA2S Shark Bytes 18

Acceptable: Multiple lines of stitching, unknown quality of thread. Beware: Few lines of stitching mostly exposed, with cotton-based thread. Fit: If protective gear doesn t fit, it can t do its job It doesn t matter if a jacket or pair of pants has passed all of the requirements above, if it doesn t fit you, it won t protect you properly. Ideal: Armor sits in the correct location while you re sitting on a motorcycle, and does not slide around easily. Acceptable: Armor sits in the correct location while you re in riding position, and does not slide around easily. Jacket and pants are well-fitted to reduce the risk of sliding up to expose your torso. Beware: Armor is easy to move away from its intended placement, gear is too loose and can easily be moved to reveal skin. Beyond protection, it s also important that your gear is comfortable. You might think you can overlook some slight discomfort for safety s sake, but after a few months of wear, you ll be more than tempted to leave your bulky-and-slightly-irritating Kevlar-lined jeans in the closet. Boots & Shoes Along with gloves, motorcycle shoes are probably the most overlooked item of gear among street riders. Unlike gloves, however, there are many CE certified options available. Ideal: CE-certified boot with toe and ankle protection. Quality leather uppers with reinforced stitching. Acceptable: Grab the boot, and try to twist it or bend it. If you can bend or twist it in a way you don t want your foot to be bent or twisted, it won t keep your feet safe. Also make sure the boots are well-stitched and made of a durable fabric (leather is ideal). Recommendations: Several boot makers adhere to the CE standards. Good luck and safe riding Roger Moraes IOY 2017 See the USA on your Wing today CA2S Shark Bytes 19

Mike Ridgway Hello Gold Wing riders. My name is Mike from Chapter Q, and I am here to help if I can. During our trip to Wing Ding in Montana two of our Wings broke down. It cost one rider approx. $ the other about $ to get home. This really bothers me to no end! I went out and purchase a Motorcycle / Trike tow unit for my pickup truck. Now I am retired, so I have all the time in the world! I would like to offer to any Winger that breaks down and after using all of their AAA towing benefit s and any other tow services and they still are not home, CALL me and I will go get them FREE, just pay for my gasoline and buy me a hamburger.
