Lori & Gary Chapter Director s Message I (Gary) have been using GroupWorks for a couple of months now and have learned how to navigate through the basics, plus a little bit more. For this reading I will be using GW to abbreviate GroupWorks so as not to wear out the name and to also keep the character count down on this article. Yes, I am aware that GW is also used to abbreviate GWRRA since it s easier to say, so bear with me on this. My disclaimer: I don t know everything about GW and given time, I still won t; just like with my smartphone. But, I would like to pass on to you what I have discovered. If I don t answer all your questions in this article, have no fear, more information can be found in GW s Support section. My main focus in this article will be on Posts, Events and their Sign Up forms. Before I get into the how-to s and the what-the-heck-is-this stuff, I want to let you know that for this article there are two types of GW members. There are regular members, which I ll refer to as members and there are leader members which will be called leaders, but are also members. Leaders (this is a GW term) are required to do more within GW (e.g., only leaders can generate Events, and invite new members, and some other not-so-important-at-thistime stuff). It s kind of like being a chapter officer. Speaking of which, the chapter director is automatically designated a leader by GW. Other officers and staff may also become leaders. GroupWorks like many online locations requires a login. To log in, you can either use a link from a previous GW or go to to get to the login screen. Or, just get the app. Type in your address and password and voila! Easy peasy! What, can t remember your password? Then just select "Forgot Password?" and follow the directions, and now voila!? Upon entering GW, the home tab on the left of the screen should be highlighted in black similar to this HOME. From here you will see all the posts and events from any group you have joined or are following. Just scroll up or down through these. The items at the top are the most current. Now scroll up on this same left bar and select our GWRRA CA-2S group tab and when selected it will look like this GWRRA CA-2S. Here you will find a gray horizontal bar with tabs for Posts, Events, Members and About. The Posts tab is already selected and is shown a lighter shade of gray. Here s what each tab represents: Posts - shows posts that members have already created. All members can create posts. To open an existing post, click the corresponding red View button. Once in, you ll see the entire post including comments (if any) at the bottom of each post. You can add a comment to the post where its states Add comment here and press Submit. To start a new post: 1. From the lighter gray Posts tab, select the red + Add Post button and then follow the directions. a. Items with a red asterisk * are required fields, and selections must be made. b. [FYI You can practice making a post without sending it out by selecting the red Draft (only me) at Select Audience*. 2. When finished with the draft post, hit the Save button and then see what it looks like. 3. If the post is not quite what you want, then select the Edit Post button to make any corrections or improvements. Keep repeating steps 2 and 3 until you are satisfied with your post. CA2S Shark Bytes 2
4. Once you're satisfied and ready to send it out, change the audience and select Save. a. A word about the Audience choices: o Public available to everyone on GW inside and outside of GWRRA. This is not used very often. o CA District to members associated with the California District. o GWRRA to members associated with GWRRA. o Members to those members of GWRRA CA-2S, or whichever group you are in at the time. o Draft (only me) to yourself only. b. [FYI Once the audience is changed from Draft (only me), the post is out there for all to see when saved.] Events - is very similar to Posts in viewing, navigating and comments. The big difference between Posts and Events will be spelled out below. Members of the group you are currently in and shows the Groups, Associations, Channels and Passions for that person. No security issues here. About - gives a little bit of information about our chapter, or whichever group or association you are in at the time. While creating a Post or Event, you ll come to the ADD MEDIA section. Here you ll find that certain items can be uploaded to your post or event. These items are in a blue horizontal bar and are titled Image, Document, Website, Video and Form. Image (photo), Website link and Video are just as the names imply and no explanation is really required. However, Images do the most to spruce up a post or event because they are the eye catchers. So use your imagination and experiment. Remember the saying a picture is worth a thousand words. A Document can be downloaded by the reader. This is very handy especially if you re plugging a rally and you want to get your Registration Flyer out to the masses. The document will be shown as a File with a red View button to the right of it. Keep in mind that there is a file size limitation for uploaded media items. Form. In GW, this is a Sign Up form (SU), which doesn t look like a form at all in the finished post or event. It looks like poll selections. I need to spend some time on SUs because this can be a bit confusing with having SUs in both Posts and Events. For CA2S, let s differentiate between an Event SU and a Post SU as follows: o Event Sign Up All event choice SUs pertain to rides, socials, rallies, occasions, happenings, gatherings, etc. o Post Sign Up - Any type of non-event choice selection will be under Posts. For example, let s say we are thinking of changing the color of our chapter shirts and want to get a group consensus of what the chapter wants. A post SU with color selections would be appropriate. Or, maybe we re thinking of changing the location of our monthly gathering and we have two or more choices. Again a post SU would be fitting. Clear on this distinction? Well then, let me muddy this up a bit. The only exception I can see to this separation between Post SUs and Event SUs is the "impromptu" ride or happening set up by any member. In case you didn t already know it, any and all members can initiate an impromptu. As I mentioned towards the beginning of this article, only leaders can create events;, so there has to be somewhere for regular members to do the same. CA2S Shark Bytes 3
Now that you have a grasp on the difference between Post and Event Sign Ups, you might ask, why not just leave a comment on the post or event and be done with it? Well, a SU is a must if any choice selection is needed from the reader. Sure, the creator of the post could just ask for a comment reply and forgo the SU, but then the creator would soon regret that decision and have to look at each comment and then do some math and grouping to get like items together to formulate a complete group response. All-in-all a SU is easier for the post creator to decipher and also for the reader to respond to with just a click (or a tap) on a SU choice. To get a clearer picture, this is what it takes to respond to an Event with a Sign Up; just follow the steps (it looks worse than it is): 1. Select the Events tab. 2. Choose an event and click the View button to see the event. 3. When opening an event for the first time, two buttons are now shown for you to choose from; a gray Not Going and a red I m Going. These are the RSVP choices. [FYI - Your selection can be changed later by selecting Change RSVP in the same title block.] At this point there are three choices. a. Select Not Going and you are done, and can exit by selecting < Back to Group at the top of the screen. b. Or Select I m Going and then go to step 4. c. Or Select < Back to Group at the top and exit the event without responding to the RSVP. 4. Next window asks about guests. Default is Just Me. a. [FYI At this point, to exit the event and remove the RSVP, select the X Close button and then the < Back to Group button as in step 3a & 3c above.] Otherwise continue to 4b. b. Either select a number of guests or stay on the Just Me and then select the Save button. c. [FIY If your significant other can also respond to the event and is going, please don t select a +1 guest unless he/she won t be responding. This will help with an accurate head count.] 5. Scroll down and see if there are sign-up choices. If there s none, then you are done. If there are, then continue to step Select the option with a symbol to the left of the choice and Sign Up boxes will appear under the selected title. 7. Select a Sign Up box and your selection is entered. Follow this step again if this is a multiple-choice Sign Up. a. [FYI This part is Very Important to those organizing the event. If you RSVP I m going" and there is also a SU, please select the signup choice(s) that apply to you. This gives the organizers a heads up for planning purposes. This is Very Important and Very Helpful.] b. [FYI To cancel your selection, hit the blue X to the right side of the SU box.] 8. At this point you can either download a document (if included in the event) by selecting View next to it and following directions, or add a comment (as previously mentioned), or exit the event by selecting < Back to Group. I know there is a lot to grasp here, but really it isn t that tough once you have gone through the steps. GroupWorks is a very handy tool for communicating within our chapter, and also with other chapters as well. Considering what we used before with Y _o, we ve finally shifted into high gear. Please take time to move around in GroupWorks and find what it has to offer. That s about it for now. Until next month, be active, show some chapter pride, and of course ride! 8 WOW, A quarter of 2019, has already gone by and what has your Ride Coordinator been doing? Well besides staying out of the rain and just looking at the poor Goldwing sitting in the garage, we ve been planning some great rides. We had a staff meeting and planned a lot rides for this year. Also, working with District, we are going to be doing more rides with other GWRRA chapters. We got 2019, off to a good start with a New Year s Day ride. Five of us got together at the Shell meeting spot and headed to the coast for brunch and a good twisty ride. In February we were able to get another ride in to Los Banos. We had ten members from our chapter and three additional riders from CA2Q. We took back roads around Livermore, and over Patterson Pass Rd to our newly adopted Tracy meeting spot, the Mobile station at Patterson Pass Rd and I-580. We then took 132, 33 and other backroads to Wool Growers in Los Banos. We planned to start March with a ride but it got rained out. To keep with our goal of doing more riding, we didn t cancel the ride but only postponed it. With daylight savings time starting, we decided to do the ride after the chapter meeting. We had a good turn out for a ride to the Sierra foothills, up to Knights Ferry and the Rivers Edge restaurant. I think our goal of doing more rides must be a hit because we re getting more members participating in the rides. Ok, I ll admit I may have zigged a few times when I should have zagged but we all arrived and had a great time at the Rivers Edge. Then took River Road back and over Corral Hollow Rd and home. And finally back to our regularly scheduled rides, with a Delta Ride and lunch at Fosters Big Horn restaurant. I asked Douglas to lead the ride and invited other chapters to join us. Douglas did his usual great job guiding us up and around the Delta and we had members from CA-2J, CA-2N and CA-2Q participate. Even with the wet winter we had, CA-2S is doing a lot of riding and looking forward to even more rides to come. In fact we are have our first overnight ride in a long time coming up. On Friday, April 5th, we will be taking a scenic route down to Victorville. We will then attend CA-1A s rally in Lancaster on Saturday and CA-1V s rally in Victorville and head home on Sunday. Check GroupWorks for details but feel free to attend all or part of the event. It would be great to make a large showing. Also, mark your calendars for the CA District Rally on May 24-26th. Check GroupWorks regularly for more planned and unplanned rides. Ride Safe and Ride Often John Hein CA-2S Ride Coordinator. Ride Coordinator CA2S Shark Bytes 8
CA2S has been meeting and riding between the rain drops and still having a FUN time. Looks like we are heading in to a beautiful Spring. The hills are a lush green and the air is clear. The rainy days are almost behind us and it is time to clean our bikes, polish the chrome and give it a good tune up. We have lots of rides, rallies, dinners and game nights scheduled. Our meeting at the Omega on March 16 saw 14 members and 2 prospective members gather for a hearty breakfast and great meeting before heading out on a ride. We also had 3 guests from CA2N who spoke of their rally at Long Barn on June 14 and 15. We had our District Ride Coordinator from CA2Q Don Kuellmer and his wife Beth, who spoke on the April ride from Redding to Southern California. The room was decorated for St Paddy s Day and we were all wearing the green, even Sharky. Ron Nicolas was the lucky winner of the Vest Drawing. More green was shared with the 50/50 raffle, which was won by our own Treasurer Doug Loyd. Roger Moraes gave a talk on the Levels Program and encourage everyone to attend classes and progress through the Levels. CD Gary gave a video presentation on GroupWorks and how it is changing the way GWRRA communicates. It is a big improvement from Yahoo. If you haven t logged in and worked with it, do it today. It is very user friendly. After the meeting, Ride Coordinator John Hein led us on a back roads trip to Knights Ferry for a Lunch at the Rivers Edge. At one point there were 8 Bikes, 1 Trike, 1 Spider, a Van and a Pickup Truck. On arrival at Rivers Edge we were 11 diners enjoying the rushing waters sitting on the shaded Veranda. It was a wonderful day. Please keep thinking of rides and activities that will be of interest to you in We still have many opening in our calendar for more FUN activities. Please save your treasures (sometimes known as junk ) as we will be having a HUGE Garage Sale on May 3 and May 4. We need lots of donations to make this a success. At last meeting, we welcomed a new member and we invite members who we have not met yet or seen lately, to join us at a monthly gathering. The more people, the more FUN! 11 2019 CA2S Individual of the Year Greetings fellow CA2S ens, Earlier this year I was bestowed the honor of being selected Individual of the Year. (IOY) I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone that was involved in making that choice. I think most of you know who I am because I m the guy that is difficult to understand and has a strange way of eating. But many of you don t know much more about me. So I would just like to tell you a little about myself. I worked in law enforcement for 27 years. In 2005, I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer from a work exposure. My wife made the mistake of saying I could get a Goldwing if I pulled through. So there I was in 2006 buying my black Goldwing, and in 2007 I joined CA2S. I survived the cancer but the treatments left my neck muscles paralyzed. My challenges may be more obvious than others, but we all have to face our challenges. I have learned how to manage the challenges in my life and not let my challenges control my life. Since 2007, I have ridden through all 48 Continental US states and rode in Hawaii, and Canada. In 2016, I visited 130 National Parks for their centennial year. I have ridden across country five times, visited most major sites and monuments. And last year I participated in the Ride For The Wall ride from Ontario, CA to Washington DC with 700 other riders just in my group. We all have faced personal challenges and hardships and it is up to us on how we handle them. I used to quote a line out of that great classic movie Galaxy Quest, with Tim Allen, Never give up, Never surrender. I still try to live by the motto. I am very happy to be part of CA2S and enjoy riding and passing riding stories with each of you. I also would invite anyone wanting to talk about dealing with cancer treatments or the after effects to feel free to contact me. Ride Strong John Hein Individual of the Year CA2S Shark Bytes 11
2019 CA2S Couple of the Year Danny & Sandy Shewey are the new COY for 2019, taking over for Paul & Ruth Androwsky. We were COY s in 2013 and we continue to be active in CA2S. One advantage to being the newsletter editor and having old copies electronically available, I was able to find this Excerpt from April 2013: A little bit about us. We ve been with GWRRA and CA2S since 2005, after purchasing our first Goldwing, a Interstate. Having put a little over 55K miles on that bike and trailer combo, we bought a 98 SE in 2010, and have over 20K miles so far. We ve taken a couple cross country trips to the 2009 and 2011 Wing Dings, mixing camping and hoteling, a family reunion, visiting friends, and numerous parks and attractions along the way. Last year (2012) we took a 4K ride thru S.Oregon & Idaho (family reunion again), to Salt Lake and back through Fallon, Nev, and N. California to our home in San Jose. We try and help out with chapter activities, go on as many rides as we can, and both enjoy the camaraderie and friendships we ve made in the chapter. Danny took on the newsletter editor position in 2006 and tries to make it interesting, informative, including pictures to highlight the fun we all enjoy having. In 2013, Sandy took on the Awards & Special Recognition position. Danny enjoys doing his own motorcycle maintenance (zen?), and Sandy is happy to be a co-rider, navigator, and keeps Danny from getting too crazy. We ve lived in the Bay Area since 1976, and have immediate family here and in the Merced area. Raised 2 boys now grown and on their own, and recently helping with our elderly parents. Danny retired (early) in 2007 from HP, and Sandy continues to work as a Sales Manager for Interior Plant Design. It s an honor to be the COY, and we are looking forward to continue participating and helping where we can with chapter activities. And now for a 2019 update. For the most part, we re still the same. A little older and more aches and pains. Sandy retired from her job in One elderly parent is still with us and we visit her often. Sandy quite often. And, we re now grandparents. Both grandchildren were born last year. Our oldest son and wife have a beautiful daughter and live nearby. Our younger son and wife live in Dallas and had a little boy. We re so proud of them, and enjoy our visits. We ve had several riding adventures worth mentioning. In 2015, Sandy and I joined in the 3 Flags Classic miles, 5 days, going from San Diego to Victoria, BC. We took 2 weeks coming back home thru Calgary, Glacier, Yellowstone, and visiting friends along the way. In 2016, we attended Wing Ding in Billings. We took our time getting there, sightseeing and visiting along the way. Met up with other CA2S folks at Wing Ding, and rode back (mostly) together. We continue to have FUN with our GWRRA friends and help out where we can. Sandy is also the Sunshine, Chapter Stores, and co-social Activities Coordinator so we re in the thick of the fun. Having a ball, and continuing to ride as often as we can. Proud and honored to be COYs, Danny & Sandy CA2S Shark Bytes 12
