CHAPTER DIRECTOR Straight from the New Director Or All the Poop Ok, I m just trying to begin lightly some but very little of what we heard from our new District Directors Ralph and Robynn French will be heavy but not enough to worry about. Chapter Director will now have access to the Area Run List, this means that myself as well as MEC (Lisa) will be able to review this list preferably monthly to see new GWRRA members and those dropping off so we can contact the new members to make them feel welcome and explain what we can do for them. As well as trying to retain those whose memberships will be expiring soon. Nothing for the general members to worry about, but they want this item worked on. Associate Chapter Visitation: This is one that you as members can help me accomplish. I d already set this as a Chapter Goal. We all appreciate the fact that a good Rally is our Primary method of fund raising for the Year. In order to do that we need other chapters to attend our Rally. And in order to get them to come we need to return the favor so their budgets also get built up. So, Although I know we can t all go to all the nearer Rallies, we need to get a decent showing at as many as we can make. The next Rally is CA1F (San Diego) in March and they are pretty good about attending our rally so if you can please try to attend that one. An then as many more as we can. I ve been a very busy person last night and today going to the website and getting a Chapter V Site going. This has the potential to eliminate both the website, Facebook, and newsletter cutting our outgoing costs. So, let s all check it out and less expenses means more in the budget we can use for us!! I hope to cover this well at both the gathering and officers meetings but for those of you not aware it s a very positive change. One item that we all should look at is what we want to get from GWRRA Training, I am not saying take training for stuff just to say you took it, but we all need to see what we need and get it done, to that end this chapter needs to get some trainers qualified. I m hoping those that used to be trainers are willing to teach again, but I am hoping one or two additional people will step up to help. I am going to say right now my hand is up! I am once again volunteering to be trained to teach. I m going to encourage our COY/IOY members to step forward to at the District Rally. I ll be saying this again but if they don t want to do it I m not the type to push you but I m behind you and will help all I can. This step is my personal pet peeve, and I do understand that if you re not up to riding you just can t but I d really like to see more rides with more riders. With that said I m going to ask how you all how we can improve ride participation. And when I say ride I mean ride/drive. I ll share the suggestions they had with you at the meetings. Ok that s pretty much the agenda at the District Business Meeting. They put a lot more details into it but I don t think you need those details and if you need more info I ll be available and if I don t know the answer I ll get the answer. Thank you for reading this and I hope you ll get something from it. Mike Rand CA1V Chapter Director

On to Bakersfield Good Morning Winger s. I m here in Bakersfield I just left John, Lynda, Pat, Sharon, Mike and Barri. I m sitting in my room wondering if I m crazy to be planning on getting up and be installed as your new Chapter Director. With that in mind, I ll tell you about my Ride to get here today. I had been watching the weather forecast all week wondering if I might be reasonably sane to attempt riding instead of driving. Yesterday it was projected that Tehachapi should be cloudy only (no Snow expected) so with that in mind I loaded the bike last night and decided I was going for it. So, this morning I verified I had everything and rolled the bike out of the garage and locked the house and headed up about 10:15 am. I headed down Bear Valley to Monte Vista then rolled out on Palmdale heading for Sheep Creek Rd. At Sheep Creek the Iphone told me to turn right. The Garmin said go straight and agreed with the Iphone and headed north on Sheep Creek. Surprisingly when I ran out of Sheep Creek I again had to choose a device, and again I traveled west with the Iphone rather than going back to US-395 due to the construction going to Kramer Junction. Following El Mirage Rd, I laughed as the 2 devices again disagreed. This time I went north following the Garmin. But only for a mile as I turned left (west) on Avenue O and stayed on it all the way to 90 th Avenue which I stayed with until in dead ended into Avenue E. Taking a Left again I remained on Ave E until it stopped at Sierra Highway. A quick right and the next left set me up for another right onto Highway 14 North. I stayed with it all the way to Mojave where I pulled into the McDonalds and got a replacement Coke. After my drink issue was settled I headed north for about another mile where I took a right onto the onramp for Oak Creek Canyon. I m not sure how many of you have taken this road it quickly leaves Mojave and starts across the desert between the Windmill Fields on the south side of the ridge and canyon that Highway 58 goes thru. As you slip between the windmills now, you ll be amazed that all the old windmills on the north side of the road are really in disrepair. And almost half are not even turning anymore, however the south side of the road has about 250 of the newer bigger windmills and they are all working great. 4 years ago, there weren t any on the south side of the road so it s really changed. Oak Creek runs almost straight for the first half of the road but suddenly you drive away from windmills on the south side and quarries appear instead. There is also a creek bed on the south side and the highway suddenly starts to carve along its bank until it stops at Tehachapi-Willows Springs Rd. Grabbing a right, I headed up over the top of the pass and down to cross over Highway 58 and go left on Tehachapi Rd past the Pilot Station and Finally up on to the 58 and finally 40 miles later I was getting off 58 on Chester Rd and finally Truxton to the Hotel. Overall, I rode thru temps as high as 56 and as low as 48. Not too bad. The first 100 miles was sunny but the west side of Tehachapi Pass was covered with low clouds, the road was damp but the temps were warm enough so icing was threatened. I was the first to arrive from Chapter V but I had passed Mike and Barri in Tehachapi at the Pilot and they arrived a few minutes later. I m hoping Sunday will remain warm and dry and predicted so I have an easy ride home. I ll send John another article after I get home with details at this time I m planning on taking Tehachapi Loop and cutting thru Edwards. But if I stick to that depends on the Whims my simple mind is prone to. This is my last ride article as Just another Member of CA1V. After Tomorrow you ll start to wonder if putting me in charge was a good idea. Thanks All. Mike Rand

Home from Bakersfield District Meeting So, Sunday morning came and we all gathered at 0830 in the lobby then loaded our vehicles and headed from the hotel to the Denny s off Weedpatch Highway. I waited for Big Mike to pull in and parked beside him, I killed switch and we went inside. 15 Minutes Later Bob came in from CA1A and says to me, your bikes outside running. I hurried outside and the lights were still blinking, the ignition switch was skill on and the keys were still in the ignition. In other words, I was damn lucky the bike was still there. Shortly after I got back inside Nancy came over and stated that CA1V should copy CA1A and hand out the bonehead award as she looked directly at me and smiled sweetly. Breakfast went well, and soon we headed east on Hwy 58 for home. I only stayed on 58 for a few miles exiting at the Keene Exit and took the Tehachapi Loop Rd up to the overlook when I arrived there I found a train parked going downhill and nearly completely around the loop. But I d just passed an uphill train that soon came under the first Train and looped around until it was passing its own tail as it continued upwards. See pics. As soon as the lead engine passed below me I boarded my bike and headed for Tehachapi. The loop road turns into Golden Hills Rd and shortly I turned on Westward and then Red Apple Rd to take Tucker up to Highland Drive. Turning left onto Highland, I soon was on Tehachapi/Willow Springs Road I stayed on it over the pass, down past Oak Creek Canyon and then turned another Left onto Backus Rd. When I used to live in Cal City I often used Backus to get me to Mojave/Tropico RD. This route to got me to Lancaster/ Palmdale while avoiding the highway and it s a great twisting road on a fairly flat path into Rosamond. Turning Left again onto Rosamond Blvd, I stayed with it all the way thru town and onto Edwards AFB. Shortly after entering the base I found Rosamond Lakebed filled with water, this didn t shock me but I only expected a bunch of large puddles instead I found it swelled almost to its maximum size, though not real deep. The next real change was to find they have broken ground on the new Base Museum which will be outside the gate on Rosamond Blvd. The Tuesday group and I stopped at the old Museum last fall and the plan is to build 3 large hangers big enough to put B52 s in and move most of the bases static display planes inside so they can be prevented from deteriorating any farther. After veering around the base a bit I headed for the South Gate and then zigzagged me way across 140th Ave, Ave J, 240th Ave, El Mirage Rd, Sheep Creek and HWY 18 to home. Temps in the 60 s most of the way home made it a very enjoyable detour from Hwy 58 and US 395 which was the fastest route home. I arrived about 45 minutes after the cage drivers so not too bad. Hang tight my writing has at least one more story as I fill you in on anything Important we got from the District Director and his Crew. I ll try to keep it down to the stuff that will effect us at the lower level. Mike Rand Now Officially CA1V Chapter Director

San Bernardino to Los Angeles the Route 66 Way On Thursday the 24 th I met up with John Baker at Lowes for the unplanned ride along Route 66. We waited to see if anyone else showed up and at 9 am we departed and soon were getting off I-15 at Devore we picked up Cajon Blvd and headed for San Bernardino. This section of road is really kind of depressing but soon we reached our first turn a left corner at an odd intersection that had Cajon Blvd, and Mt Vernon as well as an unnamed side street all coming together I looked for a traffic light but didn t see one after stopping I proceeded into the intersection where I was informed by John that it did in fact have a light and I had left moments before it changed to green. I ll have to go back someday and see where that light was located, but thankfully it was safe to proceed even if I did it early. We travelled about 3 miles on Mt Vernon that appeared to still be left over from the days of 66 s glory. Unfortunately, most of those businesses still had the same paint and therefore decay that 50 years of neglect reflect. Arriving at the intersection with 5 th Ave the road served to the left and became Foothill Blvd. In about another mile we came to the famous Wigwam Motel. I opened my trunk and got out my camera, the Guide Book and a lighter jacket. While we got a picture in front of the Wigwam a couple people emerged from the office the gentle a guest for the night had just checked out and carried a Route 66 suitcase. The lady turned out to be the manager of the Motel she gave us a bit of background on the hotel and informed us of an app for our Iphones that was supposed to be the Ultimate Route 66 App. More on it later. Rialto was a slight upgrade in the quality over the section along Mt Vernon but not a big difference. As we progressed toward Fontana slowly it gained in the quality, by Cherry Ave it was a modern city street with little other than the Route 66 signs to remind you of its heyday. There is a small jog in the early path of 66 when you get near Azuza but we stayed on the primary route all the way to Duarte. Here a slight jog in the road and the road name changed to Huntington Dr. This was the original route of highway and dated over We stayed on this road into Montecito Heights where we pulled into a McDonalds and had a bite to eat. We wanted to get back up the hill before the Evening Rush so we ended here and grabbed a couple side streets that got us on the 110 freeway into Pasadena. It seemed that was the beginning of an hour of bad traffic. Even the first 25 miles of the 210 freeway were mostly stop and go eventually we got into free-flowing traffic at about Azuza and by 430 we had arrived home. All in all, it was a great day the temps started in the mid 50 s in Victorville, but by the time we got to Montecito Heights it was 82. As far as the app, maybe it was better in other states but from San Bernardino to Beverly Hills all it had on was a note on the Wigwam Motel then every other city it listed it said page in development, and provided no information what so ever. I intend to follow the rest of 66 in the near future. It turns out there are 3 routes from Pasadena to LA. One is the 110 freeway, which I have travelled many times but when I make the remainder of the ride I ll take the other two legs one going one returning and that will leave me with just the section from Newberry Springs to Ludlow. I ll be doing that section soon too. If you want to join me let me know. I ll say this the ride I took today didn t really have much of Old Route 66, I d say don t do it unless you want to say you d done it from the Ocean to Chicago or in my case the Texas Line. Mike Rand

CA-1V MEC CORNER February 2019 January proved to be a busy month. Thanks to all who came to IHOP for breakfast on New Year's Day. A number of CA-1V members visited CA-1A in Lancaster on Saturday, January 5 th for their gathering. It was a great chance to mingle and catch up on what's happening around the High Desert. A CA-1V contingent traveled to Bakersfield for the annual conference and brought back a lot of good ideas and information. We had a good turnout at our gatherinig on January 27 th at Maxwells. It was nice to see Chris Russell who is on the mend and his wife Mary Ann who is also feeling better. We are all very fortunate, indeed, to have our health and the support of people such as CA-1V in times of need. Thank you all. I ran across some closing thoughts for 2018 that reinforced my feelings of gratefulness to the Chapter and GWRRA, as well. Here goes: In Two Thousand and Eighteen: We lost special people as we seem to each year It just makes us treasure each one that's still here Nancy Wilson's great voice joined a heavenly choir And Aretha also donned Angelic attire Neil Simon makes angels now laugh with broad smiles while Burt Reynolds now logs on new celestial miles Dick Van Dyke lost his brother Jerry no more will we see Along with Dick's partner the great Rose Marie Barbara Bush we lost early, George died months later A long long love story we have rarely seen greater Billy Graham has gone to the Lord he so preached And the ends of the universe Stephen Hawking has reached And we lost scores of others...there's so many to name But we know that without them the world's not the same Have faith that this New Year will bring a new sign And believe in yourself it will all work out fine On 12/31 when you watched the ball fall Did you wish all the best? Happy New Year to All! Continued on next page

February is here! I understand from the Old Farmer's Almanac that February 2nd, Groundhog Day, traditionally marks the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil has announced spring's arrival since If he sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter. Valentine's Day is Thursday, February 14th. May you all have a memorable day. Tip your wig or hat to George Washington (February 22nd) and Abe Lincoln (February 12th) on President's Day, February 18th. Here are the CA-1V activities for February that I'm sure you will want to participate in: Tuesday, February 5 th Taco Tuesday is always a popular venue. We will be going to Cafe Rio on Restaurant Row. We'll meet at 6pm to down tacos and all the trimmings. Please join us! Saturday, February 9 th We have scheduled a Polly's Pie Run for lunch. Please meet at Lowes at 10:30a to venture down the hill followed by down the hatch. Wednesday, February 13 th Bowl to your heart's content at the Victor Valley Bowl. Meet for pizza at the alley at 6pm. We will begin bowling at 7pm. Hope your trip down the lane is an enjoyable one. Sunday, February 17 th Join us at Maxwells in Apple Valley for our breakfast gathering. We welcome contributions for our raffle and 50/50 drawings. All are welcome. Sunday, February 24 th We have tentatively scheduled brunch at Domingo's in Boron, leaving from 395/Palmdale (Starbuck's) at 8:30am. We will firm up these plans and notify everyone soon. Monday, February 25 th Our leadership meeting will be held at John and Lynda Baker's home at 7pm. Thank you both for your hospitality. Our Thursday ladies lunch group is going strong. If you have any new ideas for retaurant venues, please share them. We look forward to seeing you. Please check your for the restaurant location each week. Have a wonderful February! See you soon! 11 Are you an Angel? According to Zuzu Bailey in It s a Wonderful Life, Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings! Well our Angels are a little different and so are their wings. The angels I am referring to are members of the California Gold Angels precision motorcycle drill team. The wings they use are Honda Goldwing motorcycles and sadly are not issued at the ringing of a bell. Darn! Formed in 1999, the Gold Angels team is dedicated to the promotion of Motorist Awareness through the performance of precision maneuvers. Some of the maneuvers involve multiple motorcycles and go by the names, Infinity, Double Snap Crossover and Tigger Swing while others are done with a single motorcycle carrying two passengers going around in circles while standing up on the pegs. Oh, did I mention NO HANDS? There are even parts of the performance where people are standing in between two motorcycles that are riding around the parking lot. It is an amazing thing to see and even more rewarding to actually do. Are you a rider that loves to ride? Do you want to improve your skill level? Do you feel that Motorist Awareness is important and you would like to get the word out Look for Motorcycles? Well have we got a deal for you! The Gold Angels are always looking for more members to join the team. Actually, it is more than a team, it is a family. We practice two to four times each month at the Casino Pauma located just off CA Hwy 76 south of Temecula. Practices usually run from 9:00am 12:00PM mainly on Sundays. Practices are broken into two types. The first type of practice addresses the basic skills such as follow the leader, slow riding, tight circles and balance and control. This is where the new members spend much of their time before participating in the second type of training which is where the basic skills are now combined into the actual drill team maneuvers that you see during one of the performances. This is where you learn to trust your fellow riders and the importance of timing. So, you are probably saying to yourself, I can t do that! or I m not that good! I can guarantee you that each and every past and present member of the Gold Angel has uttered one or both of those statements when they first thought about joining. Don t worry, safety is the most important item on the list and you will never be forced to ride beyond your skill/comfort level. So, if you think you would like to give it a shot, contact the Gold Angels and join the family. The requirements are

simple. Enjoy riding, listen to and follow instructions and ride a motorcycle that has a full fairing (no it does not have to be a Goldwing). Oh yeah, and you must have fun! Not a rider? No worries! We can use you also. You can be a performer. What is a performer you ask? Remember earlier I mentioned maneuvers with passengers? That is where you come in. We need people to assist in the performances by being a part of the performance. You think it is impressive to see a person standing between two motorcycles while the group rides around? Well, why not get a different perspective? Be the person standing between the bikes. We promise not to make you do the splits. Feel comfortable on the back of the motorcycle? Many of our maneuvers incorporate passengers. You can also assist in the Gold Angels exercise program by helping them jump rope. If this sounds good, please contact any of the Gold Angels. Unable to do either of these? Why not consider being part of the Gold Angels support team. The California Gold Angels are a Not for Profit organization and does not charge for their performances. Each rider/ performer is responsible for their own expenses. Sponsors are always welcome and can come in many forms such as monetary help, discounts, maintenance items (tires, brakes, oil and filters) or services. If you can help out the team, please contact them. The California Gold Angels can be reached on the internet ( Facebook, or PO Box , Escondido, CA Michael R Douglas
