INSIDE STORY HEADLINE CHAPTER DIRECTORS Hello CA1-V Wow this year flew by, we've had some great rally's, fun rides, dinner rides (even though we didn't ride) and some exciting bowling adventures and the way we bowl it was an adventure. Our rally was really successful, thanks to everyone, The ladies group is going strong and ended the year with fun Christmas party at Chili's with dinner and a gift exchange. Thanks ladies. Oh and we can't forget the chapter Christmas party at Maxwell's one of our best. Thank you Cynthia McNabb for the great center pieces. I can't forget Maxwell's great Prime rib either. I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas with your family's and friends. We are whishing and hoping everyone has a fantastic Speaking of the new year Sharon and I are stepping down as chapter directors and we would like to take this time and thank the chapter for all the help and support you have given us these past four years, we could not have done it without you. Thank you chapter CA1-V. Remember to keep the shiny side up and great riding in the coming year. Patrick and Sharon Riley chapter directors CA1-V
UPCOMING CHAPTER DIRECTOR Happy New Year CA1V Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. This is my first to you as Chapter Director. I d like to tell everyone that I am hoping that I can be somewhere close to the quality of Leader that CA1V has enjoyed in the Past. I want everyone to know that YOUR opinion matters. So, if you have something you would like to see changed, bring me the idea and I ll bring it up at an Officers Meeting and if the majority agrees we will put it in place. I am not a dictator and although I have some opinions (as I m sure you will) I don t plan on making changes unless the majority agrees. With this in mind I have already made one change and I ve explained it at the last couple meetings. But in case you didn t make that meeting I will explain the reasoning here. I have changed the Chapter Rally to April 8 th, the reason for this change is so that I will be there, rather than leaving it to all of you while I am on my extended trip. If you are unaware I will be leaving in August to ride to all 4 corners of the 48 continental states. And spend the Winter with my Dad in Maine before returning in the spring of I ll also be honest, I personally am for a change of Venue but that will remain the same if all of you agree that you wish to remain at Maxwell s. We ve had a lot of great times at Maxwell s though so I m only asking you to consider if you a change. As stated above what the majority approves is the way we will proceed. I d really like to get the group riding more. I understand not everyone is capable or willing to ride. But I think we can include non-riders on many events and still ride more than we have in the recent past. I d like to go visiting other chapters some but I d also like to do some destination rides and possibly for overnight rides. As an example, there is a Motorcycle museum outside Solvang that would make a nice destination and it s a bit long for a single day trip but Solvang has some nice places that the ladies would enjoy either window shopping or actual shopping. It s not that far from Santa Barbara which I m told has a wonderful zoo. As well as all the touristy things associated with it. I d also love to have a camping trip to the local mountains. Someplace where we could have a nice group dinner and relax and watch the stars and maybe some wildlife. I m hoping that my ideas are positive and you think they are worth pursuing. Please come out to our house for the next Officers Meeting and let s see if we can add a few changes without scaring everyone away. Always remember this is Our Chapter. I want to keep all of you happy and I m hoping we can expand our membership and make the V in CA1V to mean Varying, Vivacious, and invigorating! Now most importantly, I want to thank Pat and Sharon Riley, plus Jim Albin for extending for a year to make it possible for me to take over. They have done an exceptional job and I hope you ll all thank them for the fine job they have accomplished in their time as our Leader s. Mike Rand Chapter V, Chapter Director

2018, of course, has gone by so fast. Here is a little recap I thought you would enjoy. 'Tis four days before Christmas and at each brokerage house The only thing stirring was the click of a mouse Down on the Exchange the tape inches along Brokers bargained and traded as they hummed an old song The Fed hiked in December as they said they would do But they still shook the market by hinting of two The Red Sox took the series and the Eagles the Bowl A stallion named Justify got his Triple Crown goal In Thailand, a boys team got trapped in a cave It took special equipment to pull off that save Carolina saw flooding, California had fires And in the final three months stocks ran out of buyers Harry married Miss Markle as thousands stood by While May can't fix Brexit despite how hard she may try There are riots in Paris as Macron's star fades And Trump's team keeps changing as he shuffles his aides So stop looking backwards have a cup of good cheer And kiss you a loved one raise your hopes for next year And amidst all the trading Christmas themes we will heed And share out good fortune with families in need Don't let this year's problems impede Christmas Cheer Resolve to be happy throughout the New Year And resist ye Grinch feelings let joy never stop Put the bad at the bottom keep the good on the top So count up your blessings along with your worth Your're still living here in the best place on earth (Continued on next page)
And think ye of wonders that light children's eyes And hope Santa will bring you that Christmas surprise So play ye a carol by Mario Lanza Unless you are waiting to celebrate Kwanza Hanukkah's just ended and Ramaden's gone Different folks, different holidays yet each spirit lives on Whatever your feast is we hope you all still Find yourself just surrounded by folks of goodwill Monday, as the bell rings hark to your heart's call And as Santa would shout, Merry Christmas to All! May you have a happy, healthy and profitable New Year! See you soon. Your MEC, Lisa Glass
Are you considering a 2018 or 2019 Gold Wing? I haven t read all the articles yet but I have done a scan of the newest Wing World, January I see a disturbing trend. There are some of us out here who are not impressed with all the Wonderful advances in the newest Gold Wings. As much as I d love to have some of the advances I wish Honda would consider those of us that have been loyal riders of their older Machines. I personally just purchased my third, first generation GL1800, one of the reasons I stayed with the first generation is the price I also just retired, and I m now on a limited budget. But I have some problems with the Newest of Honda s wings. Specifically, the loss of storage space. I am a high mileage rider I often do 600+ miles in a day. In combination with this I often ride up north to visit my kids or just day trips into the mountains and I require heavy clothing on those rides. To that note, I almost always have 4 coats in the bike, (rain, airflow, medium, and heavy types.) Add, extra gloves, a balaclava, emergency repair supplies and tie downs for a tow, first aid gear, a half cover, the Gold Book, and my computer, and many other small items. All this adds up to a need for storage that the new version can t meet. So, I am asking our GWRRA to not forget that some of us won t except this reduction in storage and won t upgrade to the new bike unless Honda decide to give us recognition and makes a larger version. There only seem to be adds for accessories for the latest greatest Wing in the last few issues. I understand that vendors want to show us the new wares, and make sure we can see they are supporting it. The other thing I would like to point out is the fact that is getting very hard to find any vendors that seem to be adding new accessories to the 1500 and smaller Wings that are out there. As I m in love with the early 1800, there are many GWRRA riders that don t even want an 1800 in any form. They still consider their older wings the best for them. So, I m asking that you don t focus so completely on the new Wing, that us classic Wing riders don t look for other options. I am very happy that Honda has advanced the Bike and given many options to those who can be satisfied with its changes. I ll just not be satisfied with the way they decided to shrink my machine. My whole point is that most of Wing World seems to be making these changes. I have seen no lack of support in the association for the people that own these older machines. The Workbench Column does not appear to have shifted this way I ll miss Stu but the Mark seem to be a fine addition in the wake of Stu s retirement. I would also add this is my editorial and I understand if you choose not to publish it. I would be pleased to see a reply by management on my comments. Mike Rand Member # CA1V Chapter Director as of January 2019

Tour of Honor What is Honor? Meriam Webster identifies it both as a noun and a verb. Regardless of how it is used, there seems to be a common theme here. Terms like reputation, recognition, privilege, respect and integrity are prevalent. A showing of usually merited respect also known as Recognition is the definition used when describing the military Veteran. Unfortunately, many of the Veterans that served in the different military branches did not receive this respect or recognition for their service. The days of ticker tape parades seemed to quickly turn into protests and marches. Veterans were portrayed very poorly and treated even worse when they returned from war. The sad thing is that those individuals exercising their freedoms were using them against the ones that fought and died to ensure those freedoms were there. Fortunately, times were in the process of changing. Memorials/Monuments were being built in Washington DC in recognition of all who served. The year 2004 marked the completion of the World War II memorial, but for many this happened too late. It has been estimated that over 600 World War II Vets die each day. For others, the cost of travel prohibited their ability to visit the memorials. This was unacceptable to one Springfield, Ohio based VA Physicians Assistant. Prior to starting his second career with the VA, Earl Morse was a Captain in the US Air Force and a pilot. What if we flew these Vets to Washington DC in our own planes, showed them the sights and brought them back home? Eleven other pilots from Earl s local aero club agreed and on May 21, 2005, six planes carrying 12 Veterans took off for Washington DC. This trip was done for the Veteran at absolutely no cost to the Veteran. Honor Flight was born and in the first year had the privilege of transporting 126 World War II Vets. While all of this was happening in Ohio, a small business owner, Jeff Miller in North Carolina took it to the next level utilizing commercial aircraft. Jeff named his program Honor Air and by the time 2006 drew to a close had transported over 300 WWII Veterans. Honor Flight and Honor Air were merged into a single entity that is now called The Honor Flight Network. As 2017 drew to a close, The Honor Flight Network has been able to send over 200,000 Veterans to visit their memorials. And don t forget that this is all done at absolutely no cost to the Veteran! Each Veteran is assigned a Guardian who is there to ensure that all the needs of the Vets are taken care of. Activities such as pushing a wheelchair, carrying luggage and being a friend are just a few of the duties of the guardian.
I recently had the privilege of being my dad s guardian during the October mission out of the Central Coast California hub. I was not sure of what to expect, but I went with an open mind. The process started with an orientation/training luncheon. Introductions were made and the necessary training was conducted. Our mission would encompass three days and two nights. Accommodations were five-star, food was great and the sites were well choreographed. You could definitely tell that the volunteers did this because they enjoyed it and believed in what Honor Flight stands for. The bottom line is if you are a Veteran, signup. It is easy to do. Visit the Honor Flight website: or call them at (937) to find the hub nearest you and complete a Veteran Application. Once submitted, all applicants are sorted, reviewed and put in to the que by priority (age, health conditions, etc.). If you are willing to be a guardian, complete the Guardian Application. A quick note, the guardian is responsible for all costs associated with the mission to include travel and lodging, but take it from me, it is well worth it!! Another important aspect of the Honor Flight Network is the contributor and sponsor. All these missions are paid for by funds collected from local and national businesses, corporations and individuals like you and me. Honor Flight is a federal, nonprofit, 501 (c) 3 organization meaning the donations are tax deductible. To find the hub near you, visit: Only through your donations and support of these local hubs, can the mission be carried out! The Honor Flight Network s mission statement sums it all up: To transport America s Veterans to Washington, DC to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and their friends.
