5 FROM THE HEAD FOX Chapter Director Steve & Alma Sprenkle Hi Foxes! Can you believe it! Four months have passed, and we have only just begun to have fun. We ve had four chapter breakfast gatherings, eight dinner rides, eight ice cream socials, eight OGR s, and one Drive In movie night, two after breakfast rides, two chapter visitations for breakfast (1Z & 1Q) and four chapter rallies, (1I, 1R, 1A, &1Q). Thank you to all who attended some or all events. You help to put CA-1F in the house! If you recall in the month of March, Steve was nominated and selected as chapter CA-1Q s bone head of the month. I was required to return in April to be able to give this astute award away, which I gladly did. I gave it to someone else in their chapter. I found out that if I had not returned in April, I would have been automatically selected again for bone head of he month. I will return in January 2018 to see if I am picked as the bone head for the year. We look forward to the month of May, which has a couple of holidays coming up, such as Mother s Day, and Memorial Day. As for GWRRA events, we have more dinner rides, dessert rides, the OGR, 2 rallies and maybe a RIFF ride. This month the first rallies (CA-1K; CA-2S) are on May 6 th and CA-1Z s is on May 20 th. There is a a movie night scheduled for May 6 th at the Santee drive in. On May 26th 28 th we have the Region F rally, where we will be competing for the Region Couple of the Year. Please Come on out and cheer us on to victory. With sadness, we say so long to John and Rocki Rothacker. They are heading east, towards their home of record in Florida. They have been a blessing to our chapter helping where needed. They attended our breakfast gatherings, dinner, and dessert rides, went on the OGR s. We will miss them, but anxiously await their return in 2019 We wish them Fair Winds and following Seas as they travel. Steve & Alma Sprenkle CA-1F Chapter Director s 5

7 Golden State Gem California District Directors Bob & Nancy Clark Hello California. It doesn t seem possible that April is gone and summer is almost here. I guess that s what happens when you are having FUN. We started the month off with the Rally in the Valley in Laughlin another great event by CA1R. Bob and I continued on to Phoenix, where we stayed with friends from AZ-R for the 40 to Phoenix event at national headquarters. We traveled on to San Diego to have the dinner gathering with 40 to Phoenix sponsored by CA-1F. It is always FUN to gather with wingers no matter where they are from, we have a great connection, the joy of riding and sharing our experiences. April finishes off with two more great events Mardi Gras with CA1A and Rendezvous with Q with CA1Q. The Mardi Gras was filled with FUN activities, great rides, fun games, costumes, and Louisiana sandwiches and Kings-cake cupcakes, and topped off with gorgeous weather. The Pie-in-the-Face activity at Rendezvous with Q promises to be a big hit (no pun intended). Come see your CDs and District & Region Couples of the Year receive their pie. I m sure, as always, it will be another great day with our fellow wingers. May promise a lot more FUN. We start with CA1K on May 6 th in the south and CA2S Garage Sale May 5 th & 6 th in the north. Be sure to support our local chapters. Besides the opportunity to have fun with each other, we help our fellow chapters in meeting their needs throughout the year. May 20 th offers the Spokes in the Oaks with CA1Z in beautiful Julian, CA. Enjoy the ride to the mountain destination and continue the FUN with dancing, music, games, and of course food. Then enjoy your beautiful ride home. Who could ask for a more perfect day. Once rested from all that FUN, head out to Tucson, AZ for the Region F Rally, May Besides all the FUN and the fantastic venue, this is your opportunity to get training and classes, enjoy friends you don t get to see often, and share in the joy when awards are received. Drill teams from CA and AZ will be performing for your enjoyment. If you haven t registered yet, get on it. Let s support our Region F un. Many are making plans for Wing Ding, August 29-September 2 in Grapevine, TX. Hope to see many of you there. Once home, make sure your plans include CA District Rally at Mammoth Mountain September 22nd-24th. It promises to be a great time with wonderful riding opportunities. Couple of the Year/ Individual of the Year selection will be Friday afternoon. Be sure to support those wonderful people that are so special to GWRRA and their chapters. Classes and training will be available, as well as drill team exhibitions, and FUN, FUN, FUN. Be sure to get your registrations in soon before the registration price increases. You don t want to miss out on this opportunity to have FUN with GoldWingers and support your district at the same time. Condos are available at the same greatly reduced rate for the week before and the week after, so make a vacation out of this event and enjoy our beautiful mountains. It is always a joy to hear of all the activity between chapters in California. Northern chapters seem to be having a great time visiting and riding together as are several of the southern chapters. That s what it is all about enjoying each other and enjoying the ride when you have them both it can t get much better unless you add ice cream then it s hard to beat. Keep riding and Ride safe. Bear Hugs, Nancy & Bob Clark 7

9 CA1F Chapter Educator Motorist Awareness Coordinator Darrel Exline The Education Corner May is Motorcycle Awareness Month California and several other states participate in Motorcycle Awareness Month each year during the month of May, to help spread Motorist Awareness to non-riders. For 31 days (which should be 365 days), state programs help spread the word to Look Twice and to be aware of any motorcycles around you. More than half of all motorcycle accidents involve another vehicle. Nearly every time, the driver of the other vehicle utters the words I didn t see him. Now, we are not actually invisible, but we are also not the same size and shape as a car. Therefore the human brain doesn t expect us to be where cars and trucks are anticipated. The Motorcycle Awareness Program is designed to help non-riders understand why they don t see motorcycles, and to start being more aware of their surroundings. If they learn to look for motorcycles, then motorcycles will be seen. The Like-Bike game One idea to spread motorist awareness is based on the old Slug-bug game, where you tell your kids to look for VW Bugs whenever you are on the road, and lightly slug the other in the shoulder if you spot one first. If you teach your kids the Like-Bike game instead, and play it with them, you will be teaching a whole new generation how to watch for and spot motorcycles. If you add points to the game rules, you can make it into a fun competition that will keep them occupied for the entire trip. For example, 1 point for seeing any motorcycle, 2 points for spotting it in oncoming traffic, 4 points for seeing it when your car is turning left. If this game becomes popular among kids, the next generation will be much more aware of motorcycles on the road. Memes on Social Media A Meme is any slogan, saying, captioned photo, or video that is spread on the internet from one person s social media page to the next. Catchy or funny memes are a great way to spread ideas like a virus, as people pass them on to their friends and followers as they see them. During the month of May, I will be trying to post at least 1 meme daily to my Facebook page. If you follow me on Facebook, please share the memes when you see them to help spread the word. Improve being seen The most effective form of motorist awareness is being seen. The more bikes are seen on the road, the more motorists will think about bikes being on the road. We all know that wearing bright colors, riding with your headlights on, and staying out of blind spots are good ways to be seen while riding, but being seen *while* riding is not the only way to improve awareness. When you park your bike, try parking in a conspicuous place so that other motorists passing by will see you. Participate in public events like parades or funeral escorts. Ride your bike to unusual places, like our Drive-In Movie Nights. Being seen starts with making yourself be seen. In April, I set up a booth at a Children s festival / Car Show in Chula Vista with several bikes parked around the booth. I handed out literature and candy to spread the word to Look Twice, and let kids sit on my bike for photo-ops. Thank you to all of you who showed up at this event to help spread awareness. We had 6 bikes there, which made for a nice awareness event. Let me know if you can help Motorcycle Awareness is a tough, uphill battle. With your participation, though, it gets easier. Please let me know if you have any ideas for events we can host, or are willing to help organize one. In the meantime, get out there and be seen! 9

14 Where Can I Take an Advanced or Experienced Rider Course? We are frequently asked where these courses are available so here is a list of the courses in California that are accepted by GWRRA National Rider Education. If you come upon a class that is not listed, please contact us and we ll check to be sure it s approved before you take it. GWRRA offers Advanced Rider and Trike Rider Courses at various times throughout the year. Generally these are available at District & Region rallies and at Wing Ding. Additionally if an instructor and an appropriate facility are available the courses may be available at other times during the year and we will put that information out to the Chapter. Lee Parks Total Control Advanced Rider Clinic now runs the California Motorcyclist Safety Program for the CHP. The schedule is available on line & course locations vary. Additionally if you are former military and have access to a base, you can take the Total Control Intermediate course on a space available basis. Unfortunately they do not take trikes. Street Masters Precision Cornering Workshop is based out of Corona and the course is held in Rosamond at the Willow Springs Race Track on Horsethief Mile. All their information is available on line. They do a trike class as well as a 2-wheel class. The Honda Rider Education Center in Coulton is located close to the 215/10 freeway junction at 1301 Via Venita. Their phone # is The contact person is Gary Johnson and Mercedes does the class scheduling. The class is open to all GWRRA Members. The BRC-2 class (formerly known as the Experienced Rider Course or ERC) takes 4-5 hours primarily on the course and costs $75. There also is a 7 hour ERC class targeted to Military sport bike riders. You can call and fit into an already scheduled class or a group of 5-6 can arrange their own group class. If a second instructor is available the class could be students. Unfortunately, they do not take trikes. We hope this information is helpful. Mike & Elma Maury Former CA1F Chapter Educators 14
