5 FROM THE HEAD FOX Chapter Director Steve Sprenkle Hello all. Here we are at the end of October. Boy, this year is really moving on. I was wondering how many of you know of the many benefits we have as being members of GWRRA. I was just on the GWRRA.org web site, and there were many more benefits available that I could remember. So, if I have trouble remembering all the benefits, then I am sure you may have some questions as well. I am going to try and list just a few, but if you are curious, just go to website. 7 The Ultimate Cruise by Michael R. Douglas About two years ago, I purchased a brand new Gold Wing Limited Edition. I bought it with the main idea of hitting the open highway and doing some serious cruising. After all, what is a Gold Wing for anyway? Several short trips (under 2,000 miles) and a longer one (8,400 miles) later, I decided that it was time to put the term "serious" to the test. I preceded to map out the "Ultimate Cruise", or "How to cover 25 states and 8 Canadian Provinces in just 35 days", or still better yet, "Becoming saddle sore, the easy way". This trip would take me just under 12,000 miles. I currently live in southern California and figured the best way to start this trip would be up the coastline. So off I headed for highway 1, trailer in tow. I picked up highway 1 in San Luis Obispo and started winding my way through some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. The road was in very good shape and made for some excellent riding. The weather was absolutely gorgeous as I worked my way north passing several tranquil coves and ever watchful light houses, ready to render assistance to ships passing by. In San Francisco, I turned my two-wheeled motor home into the Cliff House parking lot. The Cliff House offers a spectacular view of the coastline, including the ruins of an early 1900's health spa. Once back on the road and across the might Golden Gate Bridge, the going got much slower. Highway 1 got steeper and full of sharp corners. I stared to wonder if I would ever see any of the gears above 2nd again. After proceeding 30 miles north of San Francisco on this type of road, I decided to call it a day. A fog bank had set in during the night, so the second day started out rather damp and cold. I continued north on highway 1 after grabbing a hearty breakfast in Bodega Bay. Highway 1 ended just north of Fort Bragg and it was back onto US 101 and some nice four lane cruising. I made good time as I approached the Oregon border. Stopping at one of the many viewpoints that dotted the coastline, I was given a quick lesson in the law of gravity. I set the side stand and hopped off the motorcycle in order to take a few snap shots. While I was panning the horizon, a strange noise caught my attention. I turned around just in time to watch my motorcycle start downhill backwards with the trailer leading the way. Hey, isn't the horse supposed to be in front of the cart? After catching the motorcycle and cleaning out my drawers, I made sure that the motorcycle was parked in gear from now on when on ANY hill. Now I know how Isaac Newton must have felt. Once in Oregon, the coastline got even better. The waves broke onto dark sandy beaches and a short way out into the surf where several large boulders. It was as if God had strategically placed each and every one of them. Pulling into Port Orchard, I was able to catch out Creator in action. I sat in awe as I watched Him paint another of his beautiful sunsets. The colors were just fabulous. Later the following day, I met some fellow motorcyclists, who belonged to the CMA (Christian Motorcyclist Association) of which I too am a member. We crossed the Columbia rover together and on into Washington. After sharing a quick lunch and some fellowship we headed on our separate ways. My path continued along the coast and around through Olympic National Park on into Port Townsend. There I loaded the motorcycle and trailer onto the first of the four ferries I would encounter on this trip. Once under way, we sailed for Whidbey Island. Deception Pass was the next point of interest I found. It seems that this area got its name by pulling a fast one on one of the first explorers, a Captain by the name of George Vancouver back in He thought he had found a passage to the Northwest territories. NOT! After clearing Canadian customs, which I might add was no easy task for the motorcyclist, I began to explore British Columbia along the Trans-Canada Highway. The highway is very well maintained and crosses the Canadian Rockies, which are absolutely breath taking. Her snow capped peaks climb seemingly reaching for Heaven. The terrain leveled off once in Alberta and it was easy sailing on into Calgary. Southward to Montana where Glacier National Park awaited. This park is just magnificent as you drive along the same route etched out by glaciers a million years ago (give or take a year or two). Several smaller glaciers still dot the mountain sides, putting their finishing touches on this masterpiece. Pressing on eastward along US 20 across Montana into North Dakota and back up into Canada. The next few days were spent crossing the Provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario before once again entering the US one more time. Niagara Falls soon faded in the mirrors as I pulled into my family's driveway ahead of schedule. A hot meal and a good night's sleep were about the extent of my visit at home. A rainy Friday morning found me back on the road again, this time with 7 (Continued on page 9)

9 Cruise cont.: (Continued from page 7) my dad and his wing following. We spent all day riding in that liquid sunshine before coming to a rest in New Hampshire at my sister's place. The weather didn't let up, so we stayed here a day and got the 50 cent tour of the local area, which included Busch Gardens. On the tour of the brewery, we were told that the average Clydesdale will stand inches tall and tip the scales somewhere in the neighborhood of 2300 pounds. That's a heck of a horse. We were also told that a piece of steel measuring 21 inches in length is used to form just one horseshoe. Now I don't feel so bad with my size 13s. The weather finally broke the following day, so we climbed on the motorcycles and headed out across Maine, New Brunswick and on into Nova Scotia. Camp was made in Pictou Nova Scotia before boarding a ferry heading to Prince Edward Island for a quick visit. The Cabot Trail around the north end of Nova Scotia offered a pleasant and relaxing ride the next day. In Sidney (Nova Scotia's capitol) we grabbed a quick bite to eat and our rain gear. Yup, you guessed it, we got caught in a rain storm. On leaving Nova Scotia, dad and I decided to cheat a little. Heading for Yarmouth on the southwestern end, we boarded ferry bound for Portland, Maine. Actually, this ferry looked more like the "Love Boat" that you drove your vehicle in. It was fully equipped with everything from a restaurant, lounge, gift shops, casinos and even a theater to some very luxurious accommodations. The best part of the voyage was lounging around the sun deck knowing that we just saved about 900 miles of riding. Aaaaah, now this is the life! All ahead full and don't wake me up until we dock, which would be around 9 PM. On exiting the ship, we were greeted by US customs. Cape Cod, Massachusetts was our next stop and we arrived early the next morning. It's sure nice out that way in September. From the top of the visitor center you can see white sandy beaches and beautiful blue water on all sides. In the distance you can see the Pilgrim Memorial Monument as it stands proudly in the center of Provincetown. Continuing south on I-95, we past through Rhode Island and Connecticut before reaching the "Big Apple". Empty and rusting shells that once were someone's cars dotted the shoulder. "Oh, Lord please don't let me break down out here!" Across the George Washington Bridge and onto the Jersey Turnpike. Phew, safe at last!? No mechanical difficulties. As the turnpike drew to an end, so did our time together. My dad headed for home as I continued on south, picking up US 13 in Delaware. Later dad, it sure was fun! US 13 took me on through Maryland and into Virginia. Norfolk was waiting at the other end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. Norfolk is an interesting city. In it can be found the oldest military fort still in use. Fort Monroe, which was originally founded in 1609, is still being used by the US Army. What really make this fort so unique is the fact that it is completely surrounded by a moat. The chapel inside the fort is a beautiful combination of gray stone and stained glass. After the fort, US 17 took me further south. South Carolina was a very educational state for me. I was able to find the answer to one of my life long questions. "What is it like to dump a motorcycle?" With a little help from my trailer and a wonderful rut in the road, I now know. My curiosity is satisfied and I never need to do it again. I can tell people that I can go from 55mph to 0 almost as fast as I can go from 0 to 55 mph. Anyway, I know the good Lord was watching out for me because I was able to walk away from the accident (actually limp away) with only a few bumps and bruises. I gave the helmet and leather jacket a great operational test and both passed with flying colors. My motorcycle and trailer only sustained cosmetic damage, to the tune of $2,500. The local hospital in Georgetown gave me the okay after a few x- rays and sent me on my way. What hurt the most was the visit from the Highway Patrol officer and the ticket he handed me. Boy, now if that isn't adding insult to injury! Anyway, I climbed back on the motorcycle and cruised on into Florida where I spent four days with my grandfather recuperating and fixing up the motorcycle. The time finally came to finish the last leg of my trip back to southern Cal. Once on I-10 the trip was long and uneventful, especially the section that covered Texas. Now there is a long and boring stretch of roadway. It took almost two days just to get out of Texas alone. Just east of the Arizona/New Mexico border, I cut off on US 80 to visit the towns of Bisbee and Tombstone. Bisbee is a quaint little town up in the mountains featuring the famous "Copper Queen" motel and one of the largest open pit copper mines in the country. In Tombstone, I made my way past the O.K. Corral and on into Boot hill. You can just feel the history that was there. Back onto I-10 and home it was. Finally, I arrive back in good ol' southern California. Aaah, yes, I feel safe and secure once more. I can finally see the air that I breathe again. I was worried there for a while. Cough! Cough! Home at last. Back to the same place I had left just 35 days earlier. This trip had taken me through all kinds of terrain and some very beautiful scenery, not to mention 11,756 miles of highway. It was sure nice to climb off the motorcycle and dive into my waterbed. After a few short laps, I dozed off into the Twilight Zone. Aaah, what an experience to remember! 9

16 Where Can I Take an Advanced or Experienced Rider Course? We are frequently asked where these courses are available so here is a list of the courses in California that are accepted by GWRRA National Rider Education. If you come upon a class that is not listed, please contact us and we ll check to be sure it s approved before you take it. GWRRA offers Advanced Rider and Trike Rider Courses at various times throughout the year. Generally these are available at District rallies and at Wing Ding.
