15 Tips For Riding A Motorcycle In The Rain April 8, 2013 by madmoto In all the years that I have been riding a motorcycle, I can honestly not remember one biker who loves riding in the rain. I do not think that there s anyone out there who, when looking out the window and seeing a downpour, will say ohhh great, it s raining, let s go for a bike ride. However I do know a lot of bikers who flatly refuse to go out riding when it rains. Personally, I think that is a mistake. Rain is nothing but water, and as long as a) it s not raining very hard, b) falling horizontally (in other words a strong wind) and c) you wear the proper clothing, then the ride will be fine. There are a lot of things to take into account when riding a motorcycle in the rain, but one of the most important ones is that you have to dress appropriately. Having your normal jacket and trousers might not be enough. If there s a light drizzle, it probably will not be a problem, but when there s consistent rain, water (usually cold) will seep through your clothes onto your body, and that is not fun! Getting wet, or at least humid, when riding is distracting and very uncomfortable. It s also when you will get a cold, or worse. So whatever you do, make sure the clothing (jacket, trousers and boot covers) you use during a rain ride is rain proof. This is the most important tip for riding in the rain, all other tips are more or less common sense. The clothing doesn t need to be a diver s suit you use for deep sea diving, but it needs to keep the water away. 1.Wear proper rain gear, preferably Gore-Tex or equivalent. It needs to be able to breath but still not allow water to creep in. Make sure your helmet covers your face, since rain above 30 mph is going to hurt you.
2.Make sure your tires are correct for riding in the rain, in other words, do not go out riding in the rain with slick tires. 3. Watch the road. What used to be kind-of slippery is now very slippery. White lines on the roads will have become ice rinks, metal plates/manholes are super dangerous, avoid them like the plague. 4.Watch out for puddles. Yes, it can be fun riding through one, but since the water hides the surface you just don t know what you are riding into. Can the puddle in fact be a 3 feet deep hole? Do you want to find out the hard way? 5.When riding and you see a colored rainbow on the ground, watch it. It s got nothing to do with the gay movement, chances are it s oil. 6. When rain first starts after many days of dry weather, it s when it s the most dangerous since there s a lot of oil and dirt on the road. Wait an hour or two for the rain to wash away the oil/dirt before riding since the road surfaces are at their slipperiest. If it s just drizzle, then the road will remain slippery. 7. Railway crossing are to be taken as straight as possible. Remember the railway tracks are metal, and wet metal is slippery. Straighten your bike. 8. When you need to brake, apply more rear brake than normal. If your front wheel starts sliding you re done for, if your rear wheel slides you can easily correct. 9. Do not brake strongly if possible.brake gently. If you need to urgently apply your brakes, pump them so that you do not start aquaplaning. 10. Give yourself more space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Braking distances are much longer in the rain. 11. Relax when riding. Getting all cramped and bunched up is not good. First of all you will get tired real quickly and it is dangerous. Relaxed riding is much better. 12. Be visible. Rain makes it difficult for cars to see you. If you have high visibility clothing, now it is the time to put them on. 13. An obvious advice, but here it is anyway: reduce your speed! In many countries legally you need to reduce speed by some 10-20% when it rains, and there are good reasons for it. 14. Since we don t have wipers on our helmets (well, maybe some do) you can easily spray something like Rain-X on the visor to help you with your visibility. Rain-X keeps the rain from the visor.when lightning starts up, stop riding. Head for cover (don t stop below a tree). 15.When lightning starts up, stop riding. Head for cover (don t stop below a tree). Riding in the rain will at times be necessary, and you should not stop riding just because it is raining. Relax and enjoy the ride. You are after all riding a motorcycle and that is fun. ENJOY IT.
Hello Oregon District members: October is here, time for Octoberfest and Halloween just to mention a few things. David and I are now in Casa Grande, AZ for the winter. We completed our 14,800 miles ride this summer, to include attending Wing Ding. We enjoyed our time and meeting new friends. Next, we are attending the Arizona District Rally in Lake Havasu at the end of the month. We would like to send a BIG Thank you to Chapter H for hosting the End of Season Campout. It looks like you had a great turnout and a good time. Congratulations to the New Chapter H Directors and Asst. Directors. Thank you, John and Marlis Patrick and Larry and Olga Overton for a job well done. We have decided to step down as the Oregon District Directors and effective immediately Mary Hunter will be your new Oregon District Director. She was sworn in at the End of Season Campout. CONGRATULATIONS Mary. Please give Mary all the support she will need as your new director. Communications is key, so please keep her informed of all events, change of officers, or any issues your chapters are having.
My name is Mary Hunter and I am your new Oregon District Director. My husband Mike and I have been members since 2001 and have enjoyed our GWRRA family and participated in many rides/rallies and adventures over the years. We have found many friends that are now family. We have held a few different position in GWRRA over the years and enjoyed doing it. So here I go again right. Thanks to all who have expressed support of me being the new director, I hope to do a good enough job so that someone else will say yeah she is having so much fun I want to do it to and take over. Two days after beginning my Directorship (oh yeah we all are in this together) friends, family and new members. I received a call from Mr. Mike Forrest (Newsletter Editor-boss man) and I knew it was not good and right off the bat he says you are the new District Director right, well one of your duties is a news article for the monthly newsletter (ok!!) this is one call I was not expecting today. I thought he could have waited at least a week-but then I would have been LATE. Not good being late. Mike keeps on calling I hear. So here I am writing to you all. I just got back from the Oregon s End of Season Campout which was held at Hat Rock Campground in Hermiston this last weekend. Chapter H hosted and did a great job. Region I, Oregon District, Oregon Chapter I, and G. and Washington District and other Washington chapters were represented. Don and Sharon Webber, Region I Directors, installed Chapter H s new Chapter Directors, Mark and Sheri Bridge and Assistant Chapter Directors, Chip and Kay Hass and the Oregon District Director, myself Mary. We would like to express our gratitude for all the support that Chapter H s staff; John and Marlis Patrick, Larry and Olga Overton and Oregon District Directors, Shirley and David Ridley for all their ongoing contributions to GWRRA. We have starting working on the Rally for 2018 and looking for a venue. I have some possibilities that we can decide on soon. Right now your district staff is small-treasurer is Angie Allen and my honorary Chief of Staff is Gene Anderson, also the Newsletter Editor Mike Forrest- Boss Man will be staying on. Yeah. We are looking forward to completing the district staff soon. Any volunteers? We are in the last few months of the year and before you know it there will be jingle bells, mistletoe and turkey to eat. Bikes will be put away for the season for some of us and along with the change in the season also comes a change in the weather so if you are riding be safe and have fun. Mary Hunter Oregon District Director
Trent s Talk We have come to the time to break out your favorite chili and cornbread recipes because on October 1 st. we have our Chili and Cornbread Cookoff. The cookoff will be held at the Lakeside Village Community Center which is located at 3110 Turner Road SE Salem Or. We start setting up at 2:00 with the cookoff starting at 3:00. After the cookoff we will eat dinner and then have our Planning meeting. On October 28 th. At 5:00pm, our Halloween Party will be held at Bob and Dawna Hitch s house (708 N Second St. Stayton Or, 97381). Come dressed in your favorite costume. This will be a potluck with the dishes having a Halloween theme. Bring your uncarved pumpkins to carve for a pumpkin carving contest. Check out the October Happenings page to see what else is going on in October. As we get closer to the end of the year, we need to start thinking what we as a Chapter want to do next year. Please be thinking what you would like to see the Chapter to do in Please look at the survey and return your completed surveys to me by the October Gathering. (10/21) We hope to see you at our upcoming events. ~Trent
Back in the saddle again! Oregon Chapter H has a new Team! For those that may not remember, Sheri and I were the Charter Chapter Directors when we started OR-H in Now we are back in the saddle again. Chip and Kay Hass, also Charter members, have accepted our request to step up and join us as our Assistant Directors. They are former Chapter Directors of WA-L in Kennewick Washington plus they are also two of our closest friends. Chip and Kay did great things as Directors for WA-L and I'm sure they will prove to be a huge asset going forward as our ACDs. Gerry Davis will stay on as our Treasurer. He is also part of our Charter staff working as our Treasurer. Dona Edmond will help us out as our Sunshine Person. If our new team is not a receipt for success I don't know what is. This transition took place a few months early because our former CDs John and Marlis Patrick are Snowbirds and they will be heading South for the winter soon. Our installation took place at the Oregon District End Of Season campout that OR-H hosted this year. If you missed the campout you missed a good time! Thanks to those that came out. Don and Sharon Weber, Region I Directors came to visit as well. They administered our oath of office as well as our new District Director, Mary Hunter. So, the campout was a big deal this year. This year's campout consisted of a very relaxed weekend. We kept the cost to a minimum so that all you had to do was come out and have a good time. I want to thank the members of OR-H that worked hard to make this a great time for everyone. We are looking forward to a great year in We'll see ya down the road! Mark & Sheri Bridge OR-H CD
Chapter Directors Corner Hello everyone! Its already Fall, and the rains started coming in. That helped a lot in the areas of our great state being burned. The gorge is still beautiful, and nature will replenish itself. We also watched the Swearing In ceremony for the new directors and assistants for Chapter H. Mark and Sheri Bridge stepped up as Directors again and Chip & Kay Haas stepped up as the assistants. Also at End of Season we watched the Swearing in of our new District Director, Mary Hunter. Mary has been a member of GWRRA for quite a few years, and her excitement and drive will be a good thing for Oregon and all of the chapters. Congratulations Mary! Last weekend Cindy and I attended the Oregon District End of Season Campout, which was held at Hat Rock Campground in Hermiston. It was beautiful weather and a great place to be. Chapter H put on a great campout, with awesome food and good fellowship! On Saturday they held a Poker Run, and it was an awesome day for a ride from Hat Rock to Athena, to Pendleton, Hermiston and back. We had visitors from Idaho, Washington, and Chapters G, H and I. On October 1st we will be attending the Chili Feed that Chapter G is putting on. Sounds like a lot of fun. Hope to see you all at our gathering on Saturday October 14th! As a reminder our gathering on November 11th is Veterans Day. And in December we will be holding our Christmas Party on the 9th, instead of the normal gathering. Till next month! Ride safe and keep the rubberside down! Alan & Cindy
