2 A WORD ON SAFETY FROM GRAHAM MUNSELL Helmet Concepts Brain injury in a crash is caused by the forces created in linear and angular vectors. The linear we all understand. The angular is the rotational force caused by the object pivoting around a specific point commonly known as a pivot point. New studies by a firm, 6D Helmets, is doing significant research in methods of reducing these forces during the events of an impact. Current certification technology is based on the knowledge of how the impact fractured the skull. 6D is developing new designs based on their research and results. This technology extends into the field of sports safety as well as related to the finally recognized chronic traumatic encephalopathy, CTE, injuries particularly noticeable in football. Please read the article with Bob Weber, 6D co-founder, in Road RUNNER magazine, February, 2017, pp This will lift your awareness and understanding of how important your helmet is. Further, follow the development of your future and likely much safer helmets. Ride often, Ride Safe, but ride. Share your life with all while moving forward for the benefit of all. Graham Munsell, Oregon District Educator

3 February 2017 Oregon District Director Hello Goldwingers January is behind us and spring is just around the corner. Time to plan our rides and I can t wait. We are planning a first aid and CPR class in February and, TRC and ARC will be some me in March or April. We will install a new treasurer for Chapter H in February. We are working on the rally in June. It will be the first rally of the season. So, let s pull out the camper and have an old-fashioned campout. Happy Valen ne s Day. Our first motorcycle ride will be in March. Chapter I will be hos ng the Blarney ride. This is a canned food drive for the local food bank. See Chapter I website for more informa on. David and Shirley Oregon DD

4 Trent s Talk I hope everyone is surviving the winter weather we have been experiencing. I know it has already effected some of the January planned events. On January 1 st, we had our first ride of the year scheduled. With snow and freezing conditions in the forecast, the Polar Bear Ride was well represented by 2 bikes, Dan Burgess and Debbie Axen were the two brave riders to show up on their bikes. Due to the weather and lack of riders, Dan and Debbie decided not to make the ride that was planned. Instead of the ride we continued with potluck and the planning meeting. On January 8 th, we had our Birthday Party scheduled. Unfortunately, it had to be cancelled due to the snow and freezing conditions. We are making the arrangements to reschedule it. I am hoping that the weather continues to get better so we don t have to change anything else on the calendar. We are looking for volunteers to fill some of the open staff positions. They are the Assistant Chapter Directors, Membership Enhancement Coordinator and the Sunshine Person. If you would like to fill one of these positions, please let us know. See the February Happenings and any fliers in the Chapter G additional information of what s happening in February. newsletter for ~Trent

5 Chapter Directors Corner WOW! January was something else, wasn t it? Snow, Cold and Ice! But that didn t stop some of us from coming to the Breakfast Gathering and having a great time. We made some plans for the upcoming months, talking about the future of our chapter, planning events and more! Rider Education is excelling at a great pace, thanks to Erv Reichert and his monthly presentations. Cindy and I attended the Polar Bear Ride and Potluck for Chapter G on January 1st. There was a great turnout and as usual the food was awesome! Thanks to Trent and Debbie Axen for inviting us to attend and thanks to Curt and Jan Frink for providing a great WARM location for this annual event. This month we will be having a First Aid Class on February 19th in Salem. Chapter G is providing the location and there will be 2 people from Oregon District training to put on First Aid Instruction in the future. The cost of $30 is being covered by the Chapter and the District, as this is an educational expense for members. At this months upcoming meeting Cindy and I will be on the road to Kansas, so we have asked Erv to run the meeting. He also is going to put on a ride after the meeting weather permitting. Included in the newsletter is the flyer for the upcoming Blarney Ride on March 18th! Please feel free to make copies and distribute them to MC shops or dealers. Remember that this ride is a way of donating food to the Project H.O.P.E program. For those who do not know, HOPE stands for Helping Other People Eat. This program is run by 5 different church food banks in the Oregon City area, and they provide services year-round to the public. We do a little friendly competition between chapters for which one brings the most weight in food. Beginning this month, we will be listing the monthly membership anniversaries of our chapter members. This is a way of recognizing our members for the amount of years they have been registered and provides newer members an idea of how great it is to be a member. Well, that s about all for now! Hope to see all of you soon, and don t forget that the breakfast gathering is a great place to see old friends and make new friends! Also this year will be Chapter I's 30th Birthday in May. Would you like to head up our celebration? Contact Alan or Cindy with your ideas. We have a busy summer this year so look ahead at our Calendar in this newsletter for Keep an eye on Wing World magazine for the celebrations nationwide of GWRRA this 40th year. Till next month! Ride safe and keep the rubberside down! Alan & Cindy
