Chapter, established CHAPTER NEWS Patriot Ride Sept. 4 th and 5th On Thursday, September 3 rd, members of the Waukon HOG Chapter and several LaCrosse HOG members met the Patriot Flag riders from the Ames Zylstra HOG Chapter on the west side of Waukon and were given a Police and Fire Engine escort through downtown Waukon. This year our Chapter Flag Bearer was Bob Rottinghaus, who received the Flag and took the Flag Bearer s oath in a ceremony at Waukon Harley Davidson. The Flag remained overnight at Waukon Harley and on Friday the 4 th at 4:00 PM ten bikes and 15 riders left with it headed for Madison. We rode as far as Barneveld, Wisconsin and stayed overnight at the Deer Valley Lodge and Water Park. On Saturday, with 14 bikes, we took it on in to Harley of Madison where it was passed to the next rider with much fanfare. It was hot that morning and Bob had to stand holding the flag in the hot sun for about 20 minutes while the ceremony progressed before he could give the Flag Bearer s oath to the next rider and transfer the flag. It was a nice ceremony with a letter being read from former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson and a short speech by Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel, who is a Harley rider and also rode on the ride to Beaver Dam with us. We left Madison about noon with a Police escort to Beaver Dam. There were fifty bikes right behind the Patriot Flag that were carrying the fifty state flags. It made quite an impressive parade. The procession was about 4 miles long and took almost 2 hours to get to Beaver Dam. You can watch a video of it on Harley-Davidson of Madison s facebook page (it s about half way down the page). You can also see the parade with all the fifty state flags flying through downtown Beaver Dam on You Tube. Just go to You Tube s webpage and query Beaver Dam Patriot Flag. It should be the first video that pops up. The ride ended with another moving ceremony at Hogz & Honeez where the Patriot flag made its final stop and was raised on the flag pole there. It was a long day but thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Director s Ride to Poopy s Submitted by Robin Eick Riders met in Monona on a sunny fall day for a ride to Poopy s.

Although the leaves were not yet changing, the ride was beautiful.

After we left Poopy s, we went on to Mt Mercy College in Cedar Rapids to see the Moving Wall.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for thirty plus years!

It was an especially meaningful journey, making this trip with a war vet.

! We also saw hot air balloons and I love seeing them as much as I do lighthouses!

2 Director s Ride to Poopy s Submitted by Robin Eick Riders met in Monona on a sunny fall day for a ride to Poopy s. Ten bikes with 15 riders made the trek. The ride traveled down the Wisconsin and Illinois side of the Mississippi. Although the leaves were not yet changing, the ride was beautiful. Poopy s was busy but the food was worth the wait. After we left Poopy s, we went on to Mt Mercy College in Cedar Rapids to see the Moving Wall. The Moving Wall is the half size replica of the Washington D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for thirty plus years!! It was such an honor and privilege to get to see this. We went to see it with our good friends, the Beiers. It was an especially meaningful journey, making this trip with a war vet. It was wonderful to hear some of his stories. Thank you to all that served. God Bless You All!! We also saw hot air balloons and I love seeing them as much as I do lighthouses! The Eicks had 324 miles for the day. Toys for Tots There is still a need for donations for Toys for Tots. You can drop your toys or monetary donations off at Waukon Harley Davidson. A Safety Note from Steve: In light of Al s experience, I am attaching a photo to illustrate how easy it can be to grab an octane booster instead of 5 hour energy. Someone who uses them frequently can tell the slight difference in size. But, someone who doesn t use them very often might not, and in the dark or in a hurry, or doesn t bother to read the label, might get the wrong one. Ingesting the octane booster can be fatal if it gets aspirated into the lungs.

Secretary s Report / Chapter minutes September 12, 2015 Call to Order Director Steve Trumblee called the meeting to order at 1:02 PM with 8 members present.

Assistant Director Nothing to report. Treasurer Memorial bench was purchased at a cost of $630 + $20 for the plaque. Checkbook balance is $1,848.45. Safety No report.

A Word from the Director The summer is officially over and fall is here. Which, of course means that our riding is also about done. We ve got about a month left, maybe six weeks if we re lucky.

4 A Word from the Director The summer is officially over and fall is here. Which, of course means that our riding is also about done. We ve got about a month left, maybe six weeks if we re lucky. I hope you re getting some saddle time. I had the bike in the shop for a second 5,000 mile service this year so I ve been putting on some miles. Another trip to the Ozarks this week should help. September started out with a very memorable Patriot Ride that the Chapter has been participating in every year for six years now. Jim Hyde was the one who originally got us involved in it and Ron Brewster was our first Flag Bearer. Many thanks to Bob Rottighaus for doing us proud as our Flag Bearer this year. As one of only 100 riders that carry the flag across our Nation every year, it is a meaningful experience. The overnight stay seemed to work pretty well to avoid riding during prime deer hours. We won t know if that will be necessary again next year until we hear what time they want the flag, but I m betting it will be early again. My thanks to those who rode with us. The Chapter meeting on Sept 12 th was lightly attended. I hope we can do better next month. The Director s Ride to Poopy s on Sept 20 th was fun. The weather was absolutely perfect for riding, with bright sunshine and mild temperatures. There wasn t much traffic on the back roads we took. We got seated immediately at Poopy s but they were backed up in the kitchen and we had a lengthy wait for food. The meal was excellent and the portions big. I bought another T shirt while I was there. I wish it wasn t so far or I would go there more often. We have something special coming up for the next meeting on October 10th. We will move the meeting time up to 10:00 AM at the Waukon Dealer s conference room. After a short meeting (there isn t much to talk about at this time of year) we will ride to New Albin to view the bench. The La Crosse HOG Chapter is riding down to meet us there for a short dedication and viewing of Jim and Linda s Bench. Afterwards we will all ride to Dorchester for lunch at Wings. I think it will be a great time so please mark your calendar. Nominations for Chapter Officers will begin at the October 10 th meeting and end with the election at the November meeting. All positions except the Director s are elected every year. (Director has a 2 year term) The next day, Sunday, Oct. 11 th will be the fall Leaf Ride to Breitbach s Restaurant in Ball town. Meet at Monona at 10:00 AM and ride at 10:30. That will be the last Chapter ride of the season. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. If you haven t joined us for a Chapter ride yet, you don t know what you re missing. The fellowship is fantastic, plus our rides always end with a meal so your stomach will thank you.
