March 2018 Fairfield, CA Friends for fun, Safety & Knowledge CA2K CHAPTER DIRECTOR S BECKY & PAUL CARROLL Well we have had our first after-chapter ride this last February. It was great to get back on the motorcycle. Our trip consisted of roads around Lake Berryessa, into Middletown, and back through Calistoga and the Silverado Trail. It was 150+ miles of some of the best twisties and turns in beautiful scenic Napa and Solano County. What I didn t think of was just how quickly, out of shape, one can get when not regularly riding a motorcycle!! The next day, I felt like every muscle in my body was screaming at me! It is time to get back into some kind of exercise regimen so that the push/pull of riding (on the trike) doesn t take a toll. Can t wait for March!! We are still working on the Multi-Chapter ride into Gold Beach Oregon and will routinely keep people updated. Right now we might have motorcycles joining in on the fun. We are still trying to work with the motel situation during this high season. We will also continue with our Pizza Nights on the second Tuesday of the month. Right now I haven t heard that Cycle Gear is permanently changing their Bike Night to the same evening. We will wait to see what pans out. The monthly gatherings are now settling in and I want to thank Nick Odell for taking over while we were in Bakersfield for the Officer s Conference. Come on down and join us, the Welcome to Chapter CA2K of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA), the world's largest single-marquee social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing motorcycles. We are located in Fairfield, Ca. which is nestled between the Mendocino National Forest to the north, Pacific Ocean to the west, Sacramento and Lake Tahoe to the east, the San Francisco Bay area to the south and nestled next to the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma, we are truly Gold Wing Country, Some of the greatest riding roads in the US. We are dedicated to our Motto: Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge! GWRRA members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a Non-Profit, Non- Religious and Non- Political organization
actions of the members can be really eye opening, especially when the wing nut antics get started!!! SPECIAL NEWS! Jeff at Mach 1 Motorsports wants everyone to know that he is offering discounts on all models of the all-new 2018 GoldWing! ************************************************************************************************************************************* HELP WANTED You re Chapter Director & newsletter editor are seeking someone with Web Page experience and Web input knowledge to assist with CA2K s Website. At this time, our website is outdated and our newsletter is no longer being published on the website. So for the time being, all newsletters are once again being forwarded to the membership and all other recipients in PDF form. If you would like to assist our chapter with our webpage, Please contact me! Thanks Paul Carroll, Editor: , paul_carroll@comcast.net, cell: *********************************************************************************************************************************** IOY, individual of year Congratulations to Mike Ward, CA2K s Individual of the year for Mike was chosen for this award, due to his great work the past five years. Mike as a relatively new member to GWRRA and CA2K, volunteered several years ago to assist Big Mo as Rider Educator. Shortly thereafter, we lost Big Mo, and Mike took over as Ride Educator. Mike has done a very good job of keeping the chapter up to date on safety events, keeping the database up to date for all members, and in general assisting the Chapter Director in many ways. Thanks for all you have done for CA2K Mike, well deserved distinction. ********************************************************************************************************************************* Ca2k s ride coordinator Dean Lamp, has been sworn in as CA2K s new Chapter Ride Coordinator This is the position that has replaced the old Ride Coordinator and the Rider Educator as a single entity. He will now not only set up our rides, but will also assist with safety education, and rider levels. He has done a great job these past years setting up all CA2K s monthly rides, along with his assistant Jerry Kougal. We look forward to the continuing great job from the two of them. Thanks Dean ********************************************************************************************************************************** Purchasing A Brain A client of a hospital where they made brain transplantations asked about the prices. The doctor said, "Well, this Ph.D. brain costs $10,000. This brain belonged to a NASA top scientist and costs $15,000. Here we have a manager's brain as well. It costs $50,000." The client asked, "What? How's that possible?" The doctor replied, "Well you see, it's totally unused."
wing nut RECEPIENT OF THE MONTH!! Alright, this one was a go round! Started off with Lennie nominating Nick for not passing on to the newsletter editor pictures of the February Meeting, with His new bride, Rhonda winning, not only the Spirit award for her new favorite color Orange, but also the 50/50! Then Paul attempted to nominate Lennie, for blaming Nick for these things, when he thought Lennie ran the meeting! (Note to editor, Get your facts straight before you start nominations! Especially when you are not at the meeting!) because then Paul got nominated. But then to save the day, someone (name left out to protect the innocent) nominated Rhonda, so she would know what it was like and to be welcomed properly to our chapter. Votes were taken, and the receiving winner was Rhonda!! Yay, she protected us guys for all our follies! Thanks Rhonda! Let s keep our eyes and ears open, to see what someone can come up with next month. So watch and see who may end up here next month. I am sure there has to be some lucky recipients out there somewhere! ********************************************************************************************************************************** MARCH 2018 Peggy Suckow March 6 Tom Bales March 21 Bill Johnson March 24 Bill Hogan March MARCH 2018 Lesley & Mike Harris March 25 What kind of Motorcycle is this? Answer on page 5 ******************************************************************************************************************************** Pa Won t Like It A farm boy accidentally overturned his wagonload of corn. The farmer who lived nearby heard the noise and yelled over to the boy, "Hey, Willis, forget your troubles. Come in and visit with us. I'll help you get the wagon up later." "That's mighty nice of you," Willis answered, "but I don't think Pa would like me to." "Aw, come on, boy," the farmer insisted. "Well, OK," the boy finally agreed, and added, "but Pa won't like it." After a hearty dinner, Willis thanked his host. "I feel a lot better now, but I know Pa is going to be real upset." "Don't be foolish!" the neighbor said with a smile. "By the way, where is he?" "Under the wagon."

Motorcycles are fun. We all know that. They are also more dangerous than a car. Motorcyclists are 30 more times likely to die in a crash than in a car. Those numbers are even scarier for older riders who take up or return to motorcycling after many years. Slower reflexes, weaker eyesight, more brittle bones and other disadvantages cause riders over 60 years of age to be hospitalized after a crash rather than younger riders. Still there are those riders that ride for a lifetime without injury. Optimize your odds by being prepared and avoiding risks. Speed and alcohol are factors present in many accidents. Eliminate those and reduce your risks. Don t buy more bike than you can handle. If you ve been off of motorcycles for a while, you may be surprised by the performance of today s bikes. When shopping for a bike, start with one that fits you. When seated, you should easily be able to rest both feet flat on the ground without having to be on tiptoes. Handlebars and controls should be within easy reach. Invest in antilock brakes. IIHS data shows that motorcycles equipped with ABS brakes were 37 percent less likely to be involved in a fatal crash than bikes without it. The reason is simple: Locking up the brakes in a panic stop robs the rider of any steering control. That can easily lead to a skid and crash, which can result in serious injury. ABS helps you retain steering control during an emergency stop, and it can be especially valuable in slippery conditions. Hone your skills. An MSF course or similar class can teach you the basics, as well as advanced techniques, such as how to perform evasive emergency maneuvers. An approved safety course may make you eligible for an insurance discount and, in some states, to skip the road-test and/or the written test part of the licensing process. Use your head. Riders without a helmet are 40 percent more likely to suffer a fatal head injury in a crash and are three times more likely to suffer brain injuries, than those with helmets, according to government studies. When Texas and Arkansas repealed their helmet laws, they saw a 31- and 21-percent increase in motorcycle fatalities, respectively. A full-face helmet that s approved by the Department of Transportation is the best choice. Wear the right gear. Jeans, a T-shirt, and sandals are recipes for a painful disaster on a bike. Instead, you want gear that will protect you from wind chill, flying bugs and debris, and, yes, lots of road rash if you should slide out. For maximum protection, go for a leather or other reinforced jacket, gloves, full pants, and over-the-ankle footwear, even in summer. Specially designed jackets with rugged padding and breathable mesh material provide protection as well as ventilation for riding in warm weather. Use a helmet visor or goggles for effective eye protection. Be defensive. A recent study found that in collisions involving a motorcycle and a car, car drivers were at fault 60 percent of the time. You need to be extra alert, especially in this age of epidemic phone use and texting behind the wheel. Keep an eye out for cars suddenly changing lanes or pulling out from side streets.. Avoid bad weather. Slippery conditions reduce your margin for error. Rain not only cuts your visibility but reduces your tires grip on the road, which can make cornering tricky. If you need to ride in the rain, remember that the most dangerous time is right after precipitation begins, as the water can cause oil residue to rise to the top. Avoid making sudden maneuvers and be especially gentle with the brakes, throttle, and steering to avoid sliding. Watch for road hazards. A motorcycle has less contact with the pavement than a car. Sand, wet leaves, or pebbles can cause a bike to slide unexpectedly, easily resulting in a spill.
Bumps and potholes that you might barely notice in a car can pose serious danger when on a bike Be ready to roll. Before each ride, do a quick walk-around to make sure your lights, horn, and directional signals are working properly. Check the chain, belt, or shaft and the brakes. And inspect the tires for wear and make sure they re set at the proper pressure. From Ladies December Cookie Exchange. Jail Time From the desk of Lesley My daughter hates school. One weekend she cried and fretted and tried every excuse not to go back on Monday. Sunday morning on the way home from brunch, the crying, and whining built to a crescendo. At the end of my rope, I finally stopped the car and explained, Honey, it s a law. If you don t go to school, they ll put Daddy in jail. She looked at me, thought a moment, and then asked, How long would you have to stay? Love is in the Air!! More tribute to the Gold Angels Michael R. Douglas
Valentine s Day, that special time of year when our hearts and thoughts turn to LOVE! Things come to mind like our Spouse Roses Chocolate Romance special Dinner and Motorcycles. Motorcycles?? How are motorcycles associated with Valentine s Day in any way, shape or form? Well if I have to explain, then you re just not a biker. I ll provide a little insight as we go on. Many years ago, our friends in GWRRA Chapter I came up with the idea of bringing the two together and thus their annual Valentine Ride was born. This year s event was held on February 10 th at Bert s Mega Mall in Azusa. The California. Gold Angels were invited to perform at this event to which we enthusiastically replied We would be honored! The day started out a little on the cool side and a bit overcast with the threat of rain hanging in the air. I arrived around 8:00AM to find members of the drill team already hard at work cleaning and marking the range in preparation for the day s performance. Once the range was swept and marked, the drill team held a brief Round Robin to discuss the routine and make sure everyone was on the same sheet of music. Mount up, COMM check and off they went conducting a top-down practice of the routine. After a successful rundown, the bikes were parked and the team went about mingling with the other riders followed by a tasty lunch. Now for the moment we have all prepared and trained for had arrived! We tried a new way of beginning the performance. DeeDee on her Spyder presented the US flag while I (Alf) followed close behind with the California and Casino Pauma flags on display. At the beginning of the second lap Tigger introduced the team members as they entered the field and proceeded to the first maneuver their signature Opening Wedge Still trying to figure out how motorcycles fit into this Valentine routine? Well, I ll tell you Don t friends share a drink or two? Doesn t Valentine s Day often involve dancing? Cobra is the luckiest guy around. Tigger brings him a drink (non-alcoholic, of course). Later on, DeeDee joins in and the three of them dance the night away. I just wonder, who s leading? If it were up to me, I d have to say from the looks of things, it s Tigger. Enough of the sentimental portion of the show, let s see what else goes on here.
Maneuver after maneuver are executed with precision. We saw things like snap-crossovers where the intent was to get so close their antennas would hit, diamond flairs and suicide splits (almost like a game of chicken). We even had a special visitor drop in for a lap or two. Look over there It s a bird It s a plane No wait, It s Superman! He just happened to be passing through and was in between saving damsels in distress, so around he went before he headed Up, Up and Away and was gone. The maneuvers continued like a well-oiled machine. There were circles, counter circles and weaving. Gator, Cobra and Bulldog amazed the crowd by sitting (yes, I said sitting) on the left foot peg while dragging the right side of the bike on the pavement. The tremendous control and balance plus faith in your fellow rider not running into you is unfathomable. Not to mention hearing the $$$$ add up with each grinding of the pavement. The Honda Goldwing is a wonderful machine and its riders are spoiled with all of its amenities. Things like AM/FM/Intercom, CB radio, GPS, heated seats and cruise control make the ride luxurious. And let s not forget the reverse. The vast majority of motorcycles are not equipped with reverse, so the Gold Angels have invented the perfect solution. The next time you get stuck and wish you had reverse, call two of your Goldwing riding buddies and problem is solved. Just remember, a DQ (Dairy Queen) gift card goes a long way in the wing world. I could go on, but I will leave the rest for another time. Thank you Chapter I for the excellent ride, super lunch and a special thank you for the very generous donation!! Can t wait until next year!! Contact the Gold Angels today about performing at your chapter event! For more information on the team visit them at or find them on Facebook. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or making a donation, feel free to talk to a team member or them at: contact@goldangels.com

A Lesson In Government From the desk of Lesley A teacher was teaching her second grade class about the government, so for homework that one day, she told her students to ask their parents what the government is. When Little Johnny got home that day, he went up to his dad and ask his what the government was. His dad thought for a while and answered, ''Look at it this way: I'm the president, your mom is Congress, your maid is the work force, you are the people and your baby brother is the future.'' ''I still don't get it'' responded the Little Johnny. ''Why don't you sleep on it then? Maybe you'll understand it better,'' said the dad. ''Okay then...good night'' said Little Jonny went off to bed. In the middle of the night, Little Johnny was awakened by his baby brother's crying. He went to his baby brother's crib and found that his baby brother had taken a crap in his diaper. So Little Johnny went to his parent's room to get help. When he got to his parent's bedroom, he looked through the keyhole to check if his parents were asleep. Through the key hole he saw his mom loudly snoring, but his dad wasn't there. So he went to the maid's room. When he looked through the maid's room keyhole, he saw his dad having sex with his maid. Little Johnny was surprised, but then he just realized something and thinks aloud, ''OH!! Now I understand the government! The President is screwing the work force, Congress is fast asleep, nobody cares about the people, and the future is full of s**t!'' Oil Shortage There are a lot of folks who can't understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in America. Well, there's a very simple answer. Nobody bothered to check the oil. We just didn't know we were getting low. The reason for that is purely geographical. All our oil is in Alaska, Texas, California, and Oklahoma. All our dipsticks are in Washington, DC.
