Meeting 2370, October 18 Joint Meeting with the City of Adelaide Lions Club and their visitors from the Lions Project Freedom Across Australia What s been happening? Speakers: Anna Jolly and Kimsreang Kun Subject: Carpets for Communities Review Henry Pecanek >> You may ask What is the connection between freedom and carpets?. Carpets for Communities Anna Jolly and Kimseang Kun gave a provoking presentation on carpetsforcommunities.org in Cambodia. Families commonly with six children live on $2 per day or four bowls of rice. A cycle of poverty can develop, including stark work and lack of education. This cycle has been broken so far for 180 children. Above: A donation from Lions. The start came from encouraging one mother of two girls not going to school, to make carpets from recycled materials. These are sold in Australia. So far 34 mothers have joined the program. Independence via small loans has led to small businesses such as selling home grown mushrooms in a small grocery. The aim is that the mothers and students become independent in one year. Kim gave us a great feel from a national with photos of classrooms and a brief history of one outstanding student. Whilst from Anna we gained insight into one Australian s life choice. This started from experiences as a single white woman, travelling in Morocco in 2009 and now includes success but difficulties working in Cambodia. Just $1,600 will provide a scholarship for a year. Both Rotarian President Sioux Christensen and Lion Tony Pederick promised support. Above: A donation from Rotary. The secret of success is to know something nobody else knows. 3 Aristotle Onassis

Thanks to Henk and Greg for the photos from this meeting. Guests from Freedom Across Australia. Freedom across Australia Rotarians and Lions were first treated to (Charlton) Lion Harry Brindley s delightful insight of the Lion Project Freedom across Australia. Lion volunteers facilitate the building of self confidence by providing freely, travel outside of the hospital environment, for many used to staying inside institutions. Middle: To you and I. Below: Our speakers. 4 Started in 1978 by Anglican Minister and registered spinal nurse, John Hebblewhite, (Auburn Lidcombe) Lions first provided transport and accommodation across Australia for that first bus of patients and volunteers. Clearly the group attending from the Sydney area had enjoyed travel and accommodation including Mildura, Pinnaroo, Port Augusta, Ceduna, and Adelaide s own Levi Park. This type of experience provides daily challenges. In some cases these daily challenges outside familiar environments have stimulated independent living. The group included travellers Shayne McDonagh, Dean, Joseph and Peter, who seemed to be very happy with the great efforts of Margaret Lea, Satya, Dianne and Wayne; and of course Harry. The joint lunch was a great way to share experiences, with Shayne for example raising several aspects of life and family from the Sydney area.

Meeting 2371, 25 October Speaker: Jonathon Robran Topic: Operation Flinders Review Peter Thompson Jonathon is the Development and Regional Chapter Manager for Operation Flinders, a NFP organisation set up in1991 to run adventure programmes for young people 15 to18 years old who are having challenges and difficulties at home or at school. From a site in the Northern Flinders Ranges, five groups of up to 90 young people, lead by experienced and skillful leaders in the art of navigation and motivation are taken on a trek of 100 kms over eight days. The idea is to teach the participants the value of teamwork and respect, and to accept responsibility for their actions. The positive part of the young people s characters is emphasised and also their leadership potentialities can be brought out. Operation Flinders has minimal full time staff but is supported by about 500 volunteers controlled by five committees who set appropriate courses to challenge all participates and obtain the expected results. The programmes have been evaluated by outside organisations, including local Universities, which have concluded that Operations Flinders is a leader in its field. Top: Chairman Ashleigh extending club thanks to Speaker Jonathon Robran. Bottom: Chairman Ashleigh presenting a certificate to guest Torie Brown celebrating he visit to the APY Lands. 5 Operation Flinders participants in action.

Weekly duties From Peter Thompson Every week various members are set duties either at the cash desk or welcoming other members and visitors. Unfortunately over the past months there has been a increase in the number of rostered members who have not turned up as requested. Members are reminded that it is their responsibility to attend or to arrange replacement, too often the same one or two members have to step in at the last moment to replace the absent member. Peter Thompson Rotary Foundation Polio Plus Day 2012 From PDG Alan Smith Throughout the world wide Rotary movement, October 24 is being observed as Polio Plus Day. When the program commenced, Polio was endemic in 125 countries. Thanks to the great combined efforts of Rotary, WHO, UNICEF and the Bill Gates Foundation, polio now exists in three countries, eg Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Rotary has spent $1.2 billion to date. More funds are required if polio is to be completely eradicated. An aim of our Rotary club this year is to raise and contribute $5000 towards complete eradication. How? We plan to raise this amount by members and friends who have taken Money Boxes, returning each during this Rotary year with $100, and by personal and corporate donations both are tax deductible. If you would like to take a Money Box and save $100 we will have some available, or if you would like to make a donation please contact any member of the committee: Alan Smith , PDG Alan Smith Heather Sloan or Denis White or We would like to receive a donation or two of $500 or $

14 17 March 2013 District 9500 Bendigo Online registration It is anticipated that Rotarians and others who wish to register online for the Bendigo conference will be able to do so from late October. Unfortunately, we have been experiencing difficulties with the banking provider which prevented an earlier start up date for on-line registrations. Because of this, the conference committee has agreed to extend the Early Bird Registration period to the end of November, We are aware that many Rotarians have been patiently waiting to register electronically and we felt it only fair that you should not be disadvantaged due to circumstances beyond your (and the committee s) control. There is further good news in that District 9500 will be able to use this electronic registration system for all future conferences and other District events. Local Area Tours during the Conference Don t forget, if you wish to take advantage of conference tours to such venues as the Central Deborah Gold Mine, the unique Chinese Museum, Bendigo Pottery and the local bus tour, you need to book direct with the Bendigo Visitor Centre on Mention that you are in Bendigo for the Rotary 9500 Conference to receive special conference prices. Accommodation bookings can also be made on this number. Further details on conference registrations, tours and accommodation can be found on the conference website ( See you in Bendigo! Ashleigh Lorraine Conference Chair, 2012/13 The Four Way Test of Rotary states: Of the things we think, say or do... 7 Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

From President Sioux Christiansen President Sioux has been moonlighting at the PSC. As part of her role on the management committee of the Public Schools Club, Sioux has volunteered many, many hours as waitress, bar attendant and staff trainer since the caterer s recent resignation. It is a bit of a surprise when I turn up serving meals and drinks to the other Rotary and Lions clubs which use the PSC but they get over it quickly and aren t slow in calling out for a drink. It has been a couple of decades since I worked in the hospitality industry and a shock to the system to get back into it fun but exhausting! The past few weeks have been extremely demanding for the PSC committee and we are still looking for experienced staff to take over the bar management, however, Chef Russell Ingram and his team are quickly learning all the quirks of our guest clubs whilst dishing up some excellent meals. Thanks to club members for their understanding whilst we get through the teething problems of new catering arrangements. We are motivated by a keen desire for praise, and the better the man is, the more he is inspired by glory.
