This will support the Special Olympics torch run which is from Minda to Glenelg on that day. Details concerning this project will be discussed at our next meeting. 2 Extreme Rolling Meeting 2245, 25 March Our guest speakers on Thursday will be amazing as they are extremely brave men who can and will tackle anything. Andreas Dagelet from Brisbane, a hand cyclist who rode around Australia in 2005 and Dale Elliott, a skydiver and comedian have teamed up for an amazing journey of hope, giving and guts. Andreas is living proof to the adage you can t keep a good man down! This New Zealand born Australian naturalised, human dynamo has packed much into his life since he broke his back falling from a tree in His dream is to help as many as he can to reach their full potential. As we know Dale pushes the boundaries of his abilities with great vigor. Once a Commercial Pilot and Aircraft Engineer, his life took a rapid diversion after a motorbike accident left him a paraplegic. In addition to riding 5000 km from Melbourne to Darwin they will visit 150+ (50,000 Aussie kids) and hundreds of community groups and clubs in their bid to raise over $200,000 to help cure 1,000 children with club feet in Africa and Australia and give them the gift of walking. Since the commencement of the program two months ago in Melbourne they have already raised $7,000 in donations. This in effect will save 35 children. Their amazing crew includes Andreas brother Renee (Driver/Mechanic), Kat and Bec Skull, (Directors of PR and Events), Mick Meehan (Director of Base Operations-Brisbane) and Dale s wife Erica (Domestic Management) and his one year old son Jay-den (Mascot). They would appreciate financial support as well as sponsors. 2

4 THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING At last Thursday s meeting Clare rotarian and amateur historian, Euan Semple, presented a most enjoyable and informative session on early South Australian history. In the second half of the 19th century, Russia began extending its political influence south to countries bordering the Arabian Sea. This worried the British as they saw it as a threat to their trade routes through the recently opened Suez Canal, to India and beyond. When in 1872, three warships of the Inperial Russian Navy made a goodwill visit to Australia, the Brits became very worried and it upset the colonists no end. The Crimean War was not that long ago. Fearing port blockages or even worse, unwelcome landings, the S.A. Colonial Government built forts at Glanville and Largs, with a torpedo station on the Port River. They went one step further and in 1882 ordered a small warship the Protector from England at a cost of 65,000 pounds. She was commissioned in 1884 and though not that large was steamed powered (also schooner rigged) and armed with turret mounted 5 and 8 guns; 8 guns were rather large for those days. The Russians never came so after a few years, with running costs a worry, what to do with the vessel became a problem. The wrecking of the Star of Greece with the resultant loss of life due to inadequate resources made the Government decide that the Navy should take over responsibility for coast guard and lifesaving operations the Protector stepped forward. The original crew members were not much use so a Naval Reserve was formed which manned it in local waters until the Boxer Rebellion broke out in The Protector was sent to China as part of the British Fleet thereby loosing her Colonial status and becoming a full member of the Royal British Navy. On the way to China the crew was kept busy training for a genuine war only to arrive in Shanghai the day the Rebellion collapsed. A few changes were made to her before she became engaged in WWI as a Royal Australian Navy ship in action at Rabaul and Papua New Guinea. Germany at that time having colonies in that area with a signal station at Rabaul. The Protector was decommissioned in 1924 and sold in 1934 for 677 pounds to a Melbourne shipping company, being used up until WWII as a wool lighter at Victorian ports. The American Army commissioned her in 1943 but she was damaged in a collision with a tug off Gladstone, subsequently running aground whilst under to New Guinea. The Protector may still be seen, protecting our shore, as a breakwater on Heron Reef, Queensland. Euan Semple (right) and Tom Appleby (left) 4
