President s Report presented by Bill Marles It has truly been my pleasure to serve as President of the Rotary Club of Adelaide West during this auspicious 50th year and thank all members sincerely for their unending support, encouragement, tutoring and suggestions for improvements as we went along. So many things happen in a Rotary year, it is difficult to include everything in an annual report and to thank all members enough for the parts they have played to ensure our Club is as healthy and vibrant as I believe it is today. I admire all of your work! The following pages go a long way toward overviewing the many and varied things our Club has achieved, however, I would also like to touch on a few significant items. We Turned 50! What an amazing achievement! What a wonderful party. During this year we reflected on all the past members, Presidents, Board Chairs, Volunteers and Friends of the Rotary Club of Adelaide West who have forged the history of the Club. It was lovely to see so many people from our past re-unite in January to celebrate. Without all of these people guiding and caring for our Club since 1964, we wouldn t be in such a great place today to commence our next half century of service to the community. Membership Of major significance this year has been our increase in membership from 29 to 36 (detailed in the Membership report). This represents 24% growth, significantly higher than the Rotary International averages which has been sitting around 4% growth. We should be proud. It has been lovely to welcome some new members to Rotary and with this come fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Welcome to you all. My thanks to Membership Chair John Madigan and all who assisted him by welcoming potential new members to our meetings. We ve had many excellent guest speakers, quite often due to David Griggs efforts. Plus our membership has really put in the hard yards to invite visitors - particularly to our Focus On Business days. One meeting in May welcomed17 Guests. Wow! A new online technology was introduced to our Club by Simon Mills. We were the first Australian Rotary Club to create a profile group with a focus on volunteering and community service. This continues to build public enquiries from numerous people searching for ways to be active in our community. Thanks to Simon (who sponsored our Meetup membership) and to Michael Dodd for their fantastic efforts publishing our coming meetings and responding to public enquires so very quickly. Meetup has also been a convenient way for members to RSVP to George Maggee to attend our weekly meetings. Profiles are another major focus with much effort now being put into creating Marketing pages to promote our Club, our Bookshop and Rotary Auto Alley. Thanks to Michael Dodd for his ongoing enthusisam and talent to assist. These pages expose our Club to the wide professional network that Linked-in services. Our strategy is to build interaction between Rotary and potential new members through people in the workforce and positions of business influence. Entertainment Books Thanks this year to Christine Tenni-Smith for helping out our regular Entertainment Book man Ian Lumsden during his time off. Sales have been strong, with Christine taking advantage of a new online sales feature they offer. If you know anyone still wanting an Entertainment Book, please send them to our Website to follow the online purchase link live right now. Marketing Much has been done in Marketing over the year to increase our visibility and brand in the community. A particular focus has been to present our Club in locations that Business People congregate. Visitation to our Website has grown substantially with ever increasing ranking in Google. We continue to ensure it is up-to-date and abundant with photos and coming events. 4

President s Report presented by Bill Marles... / continued Winter Tea Dance - $19,000 to Dreamin Foundation My congratulations to Trina Sabine for her outstanding efforts running the Winter Tea Dance with David in August Trina and David are pictured below with Dr Suren Krishnan, a member of Prospect Rotary Club and lead doctor with the Dreamin Foundation, not to mention the Doctor who quite literally saved Trina s life! Fundraising Our fundraising efforts this year have suffered compared to those past, due primarily to the forced changes to telemarketing. The Arthritis SA Book Shop continues to tick over, but is not raising significant funds for our Club. Our biggest challenge with this project is simply spreading the word and getting more customers through the door. If we can do this one simple thing, more money will flow. BBQs were trialed at Officeworks Keswick. Although they provide an excellent set-up, we found the customer flow was sparse. Other new avenues are currently being explored, including Bunnings BBQ days and appearances at a massive monthly classic car cruise. Any ideas are welcome from Club members to increase fundraising. Only with building our success will we be able to continue to support the wide range of Projects our Club has been respected for. Not only was the Winter Tea Dance a heap of fun, the fundraising result was outstanding with $19,000 being presented to Dreamin Foundation. I was delighted Adelaide West Rotary was able to pitch in with some sponsorship money, a bit of assistance along the way and that so many of our members supported their event on the night! Telemarketing A major disappointment for our Club this year was the demise of our 9 year relationship with Drug Arm as our telemarketing team. Rotarian Ray Crompton from Queensland tried hard to help us restructure a new campaign with a focus on Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA), however, communications back from Drug Arm were sadly lacking and eventually they chose to cease operations with our Club, then their other S.A. clients and closed their Adelaide office. In September, our final Film Day for Children with Disabilities and their families was run by the Drug Arm team and was a great success. This was their final contracted commitment with our Club. Early in 2014, negotiations with Arthritis SA s professional Contact Centre of around 20 people began with an agreement reached for them to take on our future campaigns. The change of structure, legalities, paperwork, set-up and planning took months to complete, with the first phone calls taking place in May. Their team is incredibly enthusiastic, however this first campaign is a major learning curve for us all, swapping to fundraising for RYDA. Money is flowing, but not as quickly as had been hoped. Partly due to poor economic conditions around South Australia. We look forward to a ramped up New Year, with a second campaign reaching out to new companies to expand on the list of businesses who support us. Rotary Auto Alley is most definitely high on our list now as sales kick off in July for the 2015 Clipsal 500. We are hoping that ALL Rotary Club of Adelaide West members in one way or another will contribute to running this high profile, high fun, awareness and fundraising event. Please keep in touch with Claus. Club Meeting Venue Another challenge this past year has been our meeting venue. Our Club along with others chose to leave the Public Schools Club early in the Rotary year, with a move to the Naval, Military & Airforce Club. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent we were not a match with Nav Mil, with many members dissatisfied with its services. After a few months, it was decided to move back to the Public Schools Club following some intense negotiations by George Magee. We continue to look for improvements as we progress. District Conference and International Convention My thanks to all members who have represented our Club at District and International level by attending the wide array of Conferences, Conventions, Meetings and projects. This is a very big part of Rotary life, and is also an excellent networking opportunity for those who participate. Thanks! Finally, my sincere thanks to ALL members who have supported me throughout this year. Without your time, passion and experience, our Club would not have been as much fun or as successful. I appreciate highly everyone s support to continue as your President for the new 2014/15 year! 5

50th Anniversary Report presented by Kym Green Wednesday 22 January this year saw 100 Rotarians and guests assemble at the Naval, Military and Airforce Club in the City for a formal cocktail party to celebrate our Club s 50th Anniversary. Proceedings continued with Adelaide West s President Bill Marles welcoming everyone to the function and giving a brief rundown of the projects currently being undertaken by the Club and our vision for the immediate future. The celebration was blessed with beautiful weather, enabling the entire event to be staged in the picturesque garden area of the venue. Guests received a complimentary welcome drink on arrival and were treated to a continual flow of gourmet buffet platters plus hot and cold canapé selections which included Peking duck and spring onion pancakes, smoke salmon rolls, chicken teriyaki skewers and arancini balls with mushroom, spinach and parmesan to name a few. MC David Sabine, RC Adelaide West Official proceedings commenced at 7.30pm, with Master of Ceremonies David Sabine PHF, welcoming Rotarians and guests and acknowledging attending dignitaries. David firstly called upon Frank O Neill, President of the Rotary Club Adelaide who proposed the official toast to both the Rotary Club of Adelaide West and Rotary International after which he gave both a light-hearted and informative overview of the Rotary Club of Adelaide West s 50 year history and the role played by his club in its formation. The Rotary Club of Adelaide West s PDG and PP Alan Smith then proceeded to the microphone and responded on behalf of the Club to Frank s toasts and opening address. President Frank O Neill, RC Adelaide D9500 District Governor Barbara Wheatcroft (above) then congratulated the Rotary Club of Adelaide West on its 50 years of service sharing some memorable moments of the Club s history and wishing it every success for its future and continued longevity. She also presented the Club with a commemorative certificate and letter of congratulations from R.I. President Ron Burton. Official proceedings concluded with congratulations and an informative address from the Hon Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood (who is a member of the Rotary Club of Adelaide Light), detailing his vision for both the City of Adelaide and Rotary. 6

50th Anniversary Report presented by Kym Green... / continued The wonderful night of fellowship, good food, reminiscing, catching up with old acquaintances and making new ones continued. It was wonderful to see Past Presidents and members of the club returning to be part of the celebrations. The highlight of the night came when MC David called on PP Ashleigh Lorraine and President Bill to make a special presentation to one of the Club s most respected and loved members, PDG & PP Alan Smith. On behalf of the Rotary Club of Adelaide West, Alan was presented with a further two PHF Sapphire pins in recognition for his service to our Club and Rotary District 9500 over 40+ years of service. In his reply Alan thanked all concerned and said it has been and continues to be a privilege to serve Rotary International, the District and the Rotary Club of Adelaide West. Members from eight other clubs were in attendance on the night, all offering congratulations and adding to its success. Three very special Clubs amongst these were the Rotary Clubs of Adelaide who sponsored Adelaide West s charter back in 1964, plus two daughter Clubs that were sponsored by Adelaide West during our half century: the Rotary Clubs of West Torrens and Adelaide Parks. The presentation was followed by the handing out of Birthday cake and drawing of the raffle prizes. And the fellowship continued. Our thanks to West Torrens President Terry Saunderson and Adelaide Parks President Keith Pearson for their assistance during the evening with presentations. As Director of the 50th Anniversary celebrations, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the Club who assisted in making the night a memorable one. To Katron Creative who produced all the flyers and literature for the night and to all of the Club s wonderful sponsors who provided prizes for our raffle, a big thank you. To the staff and management of the Naval & Military Club, well done and thanks. A special thanks to our MC David who ensured the night ran like clockwork, it is great to watch a true professional at work. And to all those Rotarians and guests who attended, thank you for making it a night to remember. 7

Membership Report presented by John Madigan OAM Committee : Michael Dodd, Simon Mills, Cathy Chong, Ken Dorrington This Rotary year has been most interesting with several strategy plans and changes. We commenced the year with a discussion group of 10 Club members which decided on a program encouraging each Club member to introduce a potential member. However after three months of little participation and no new names introduced, this concept was discontinued. Instead, an active committee with four new members was formed, which has been enthusiastic and successful. Current Membership Statistics New members welcomed to our club over the last 12 months are:- Ken Dorrington, Eileen Fagioli, Simon Mills, Tony List, Christine Tenni-Smith and Peter Greeneklee. We have also had three members transfer from other Clubs:- Claus Weber from Gawler Light and Kevin Hollister and Bryan Hennig from Adelaide East (following Adelaide East s decision to surrender its Charter). The total number of new Members Inducted : 9 Two of Adelaide West members have chosen to move to other clubs, PP Sioux Christiansen (to Adelaide South) and Heather Sloan (to Flagstaff Hill). 2014/15 I am pleased indeed to accept President Bill s invitation to again Chair the Membership Committee, which will comprise Michael Dodd, Simon Mills, Catherine Logue, Kevin Hollister and Bryan Hennig. At the time of preparing this report we are aware of eight potential new members who may join our Club early in the new Rotary year. The proposed new membership committee will no doubt be very active during 2014/15 due to the new programs and technology being implemented in our Club including working with a new range of online strategies including the enhancement of our Meet-up activities introduced to the Club by Simon Mills, Linked-In online targeting and improvements underway with Michael Dodd and to our extremely well reviewed Club website. Our award winning Bulletin, which is now being distributed to over one hundred recipients, will also be expanded during the next year. Other major projects planned to attract attention and membership are the Clipsal V8 Supercars Rotary Auto Alley. We have had no resignations presented. At the time of preparing this report, there are : 36 Rotarian members of the Rotary Club of Adelaide West Inc. Having started the year with 29 members, this represents an overall increase of 24%. We have one Honorary member : Meg Siostrom and 3 Friends of Adelaide West Rotary : Sebastian Walker-Magee, Michele Colmer and Tania Macdonald. I wish to extend thanks to members of our Membership committee for their involvement in activities throughout the year especially for their enthusiasm in the introduction of new members. My sincere thanks to our President Bill for his involvement in our committee and portfolio. We are extremely fortunate to have a President who has upgraded our Club with technology and modern ideas which has lifted the Club to a new higher level of community awareness and is now attractive to people interested in a highly recognised group. PP David Griggs efforts to introduce a wide array of high quality speakers throughout the year, has resulted in many visitors to our Club. In particular our Focus on Business speaker on the first Thursday of each month. The meeting of Thursday 22 May saw 17 visitors (pictured with President Bill) enjoy an outstanding meeting. We are confident that, as a number of visitors make return visits, that they too will consider membership of the Rotary Club of Adelaide West. 8

Community Service Report presented by Henry Pecanek Food for the Homeless Project Now into its 4th year, Rotary Adelaide West continued this great Community Project to collect food for Adelaide s Homeless. Over the last year it has pleasingly continued to gain momentum. Adelaide Central Market Traders every fortnight have continued generously donating unsold food just as the market closes on a Saturday afternoon. Once in a while, calls are also received for us to make special pickups. It would be great if we could collect each Saturday, with some traders wondering if twice a week is possible! Food and produce is then delivered to a Salvation Army refuge, a Centre supporting homeless mothers, a St Vincent de Paul refuge and an Anglican centre that provides meals for street people. Since 2010, food worth $40,000 to $50,000 has been delivered from 1,000 hours of community service. Helen Pecanek delivers food to Peter at the Anglican city based Magdelene Centre Representatives from the Rotary Clubs of Adelaide Light and Adelaide Parks, Rohan Richards and John Hicks respectively, visited us at the market to learn more of our project. Also Andrea Chia and Phuong Nguyen of Santos assisted again last year. The following traders have provided great support: AGA Meats, Barossa Fine Foods, Springfield Butchers, Feast, Bill B s, House of Organics, M&M s Fruit Mart, Say Cheese, Dough, Smelly Cheese, Marco the Mushroom Man, Atlas Continental, Skala Bakery, Jagger Fine Foods, Wild Loaf, Gourmet to Go, Assagio, Taste of Marrakech and Stall 69. Each year Adelaide West Rotarians have been committing more than 250 hours of community service towards this project and so far donating as yet unrefunded costs of some $1,000 per year on carparking / car costs, whilst collecting around $10,000 of value of food per year. Again, I am pleased to have the opportunity to thank so many Club members; both those actively supporting the project and also those members who vote their support at Club and Board levels. Christine Tenni-Smith with family (Helen and Michael) and Cathy Chong added their support to regular helpers John Barton and Henry Pecanek. Peter Thompson stepped up again and led two collections and distributions. Help came from George Magee, Eileen Fagioli, Geoff Beer, Tonly List and Helen Pecanek to name a few. The numbers of helpers each week makes a difference, especially when the collection and deliveries workload is divided up to at least three car loads. Also it is important for the Club to show consistency in appearing before the traders, preferably knowing each worker in the stalls by name to show that Rotary cares. Simon Mills and his family joined a collection and with Michael Dodd, Simon posted the project on MeetUp, which has helped promote community awareness. An important source of recognition includes market shoppers asking what Rotary is doing. Usually, each visit we get at least one enquiry from members of the public. Each and every one of us can promote Club success, including wearing one of the Club s shirts. One such example of an enquiry came from a university student, Helena from Brazil, who is now helping us with collections. Our Club feels these generous Adelaide Central Market traders need our appreciation and community recognition. One way is for us to promote the market. In 2013, Club members made a special vocational visit to the market, in numbers, along with friends. This is an easy, no fuss way for our Club and our friends to show support. Just come along to say thanks and do some of your regular shopping at the same time. 12

Community Service Report presented by Henry Pecanek... / continued Arthritis SA Weekly Book Shop Every Saturday morning we continue to open the Book Shop selling a huge range of pre-loved and new books for $2 each. This project enables us to support Arthritis South Australia with fundraising supporting their community education programmes. Monies raised from the sale are split 60 / 40 between Arthritis SA and our Club, generating a bit of cash flow to help other projects we run. Winter Tea Dance - The Dreamin Foundation Trina and David Sabine ran a magnificent fundraising event in August to support the work of the Dreamin Foundation, a project commenced by the Rotary Club of Prospect. Trina in particular invested every ounce of energy she had into this event as a way to particularly thank and support Dr Suren Krishnan, who quite litterally saved her life from cancer during the previous year. Awareness of the sale has been our biggest challenge. All customers who arrive are astounded by the volume, variety and quality of the stocks we offer, often saying you re the best kept secret in town. Efforts recently have been put into increasing online awareness through our Meet-up; LinkedIn and Facebook profiles, and our website. In mid-june 2014 dozens of local Book Sellers were invited to Monday / Tuesday special open days just for them. This was quite successfull with over $550 worth of trade. We continue to ask ALL members and friends of Rotary to spread the word about our book shop. Share the information through your friends, family and colleagues and in particular, LINK everyone up through your Facebook, LinkedIn and other Social Media profiles. Dr Suren and other Royal Adelaide Hospital Doctors each year donate their time and so much more to the Dreamin Foundation, to travel overseas to treat people less fortunate than those locally supported by the Australian healthcare system. Winter Tea Dance funds will make so much more of their work possible, by supplying much needed medical supplies and operating equipment the team take with them. Rotary Adelaide West sponsored this event with a $2,000 donation and rendered as much support as possible with promotion and handling online ticket sales through our Club booking system. For Trina and David s enormous efforts, a surplus of $19,000 was raised. An outstanding effort! Our congratulations. Around 350 people FILLED The Grand Ballroom at Fulham Gardens. Bookings were turned down in the end in an effort to not have to fill the dance floor with seating as well. SOLD OUT!! Trina spent hundreds of hours planning the event and preparing beautiful table and room decorations. Guests walked through the door in awe of a glow of blue and a winter wonderland of fairy lights. The food was gorgeous. The entertainment fun. The dancing ongoing. The drinks were flowing and MC David in his usual comical style kept the belly laughs going all night. Then came the serious part - the charity auction! Many thousands of dollars were made through Trina, David and friends hard work pulling together a huge array of auction items. Bidding for many items was furious and made a massive contribution to the $19,000 raised. 13

Club Service Report presented by George Magee Attendance At the time of writing this report, our average membership attendance to the end of May was 62.4%, slightly down on the previous year. However, our attendance at meetings has increased in numbers to the extent that our average attendance is around 30 with numbers in the bracket not uncommon. These numbers, although made up by the attendance of many guests to our Club, have created opportunities to increase our overall membership. The Rotary requirement for individual attendance is set at 50% per annum so with many of our members in the 90% range, we have a great opportunity to raise our overall average by every member achieving at least the minimum requirement. Programmes Our Club is again indebted to David Griggs for his efforts in getting quality Guest Speakers for our weekly meetings which has in turn attracted the attendance of many guests, as well as members. David's approach to the role of Sergeant has helped to guide many of our newer members to participate in the Sergeant s role, thus creating a pool of Sergeants to share the task and experience the position. My thanks to those who participated in this approach, namely: Cathy Chong, Kym Green, David Sabine, John Madigan, Ashleigh Lorraine, Dennis White, Tom Appleby and of course David Griggs himself. Members also pitched in at short notice to support the Minda Easter Hot X Bun fundraiser, exacting the sum of $420 for very little effort. Change of Venue Our Club commenced the year with a move to the Naval Military & Airforce Club after spending a number of years at the Public Schools Club (PSC), but has now returned to the PSC as we felt that this venue was perhaps more suitable to our members needs. We will continue to monitor our meeting place so that all can be satisfied with the location of our weekly meetings. Props Our thanks go to Geoff Beer, Ian Lumsden and Peter Thompson for their efforts in organising Props, Cash and Raffles on a continuing basis, with the raffle again raising in excess of $2,000. These endeavours create a regular source of income for our Club and together with 5EBI s supply of raffle wine prizes, plus the use of 5EBI s Boardroom for our monthly Board meetings, help to make our Club the success that it is in our aim to achieve Service Above Self. Finally our thanks to our Flag Man, Geoff French (at right), who brings an assortment of flags to adorn our tables every week. Each week a different theme is presented (eg World Cup Countries). Geoff himself has purchased all of the flags in his collection on behalf of the Club for a fit of extra fun and education. Club Bulletin John Madigan has again organised our Bulletin, which continues to be the best in the District, and with President Bill taking over the design, has every chance of winning the District Bulletin Award for the third time. Many thanks to John for his great effort and to Kym Green at Greenhouse Media for their sponsorship of our Bulletin to the tune of $1,

Youth Services Report presented by Catherine Logue The Club has been effective in several areas of the Youth Community. In particular supporting the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program within District Alongside Adelaide Club, we have been active financial and on-the-ground participants in three of Rotary Adelaide South s annual RYDA training days, run at the Campbelltown Leisure Centre. These days are just a few of many across South Australian Clubs, using RYDA's national program curriculum. RYDA is a one day, out of school program delivering practical road safety information targeting attitude and awareness of year old drivers and their passengers. 150 students per day participate. They get broken into six groups of 25 and rotated around the six topic lectures, presented by professionals in the field such as Driving Instructors; Police Officers; Nurses; RAA technical advisors; survivors of serious accidents etc. Our Club hosted its annual movie day in Sept 2013 for young people with disabilities / ongoing illnesses and their supporting carers. The Club has been a long-time supporter of this event through its annual Tele-Fundraising campaign. Hundreds of kids were treated to a movie, popcorn, drink and giveaways to put smiles on their faces and give their families a break from the rigors of their lives. A special project supported by the Club, was the sponsorship of Nikita Nevard in the World Challenge Expedition in Borneo and Malaysia for an eight week adventure. During this time Nikita along with her counterparts from other schools were exposed to other cultures, helping build community capacity by volunteering at orphanages, teaching English and building shelters. RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership Program was supported by two members, David Griggs and I facilitating at the week-long residential. During the week, RYLArians undertake training in Leadership, Communication MBTI profiling, teamwork, managing conflict and setting goals. Their skills are put to use at the official dinner, where the groups present their aspirations to the visiting Rotarians. International RYLA - I was invited personally to facilitate at the International Convention for RYLA in June My family team consisted of four Australians, two Americans, a Frenchman, a young lady from Poland (living in Hong Kong), two from Japan and a young lady from Russia. An awe inspiring four days with our talented youth. We were joined for the convention by the International Chair from Japan Michiko Mitarai. Many of the young RYLArians had joined Rotaract and attend the convention following the RYLA event. The Club sponsored James Gray from Adelaide High School at the National Youth Science Forum. The NYSF aims to nurture and encourage young Australians to be the next generation of leading scientists and engineers supporting a sustainable future for our nation. NYSF offers a growing suite of programs across Australia to develop the exposure of Year 12 science students to study, research and future employment opportunities. The NYSF runs proudly in partnership with the Australian Government, major industry businesses, national research institutes and universities. Our Career Workshop for Adelaide youth had to be postponed, but has now been scheduled for 18 July at the University of Adelaide. This half day workshop will assist young people wanting tips and techniques for developing their resumes and getting ready for that first job interview. 15

International Service Report presented by Ashleigh Lorraine The results for 2013/14 for Adelaide West are generally pleasing. We would have liked to contribute more to The Rotary Foundation, however our Club fundraising results did not allow this. Through no fault of the Club, we had to establish a new fundraising avenue this year and it is yet to get into full swing (see President s report). However, there were sufficient funds carried over from last year to allow many International obligations to be fulfilled. INTERNATIONAL Super Typhoon Haiyan Our first international humanitarian contribution was made in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan which devastated part of The Philippines, especially Tacloban and northern Cebu within Rotary Districts 3860 and A donation of $2,500 was made direct to the D3860 Disaster Fund and acknowledged by a very grateful District Governor Edgar Chiongbian. DG Edgar explained that whilst many donations of Shelter Boxes and Disaster Aid kits where offered, what was urgently required was money for food, clean water, clothes and medicines. Our donation to provide these items was from funds set aside in our International budget for a Shelter Box and a Disaster Aid kit. Advice of our fellow Rotarians needs was received on Monday afternoon (11th Nov) following the typhoon and by Thursday afternoon (14th) the funds were in the D3860 Disaster Fund bank account. (Thanks Treasurer Eileen.) Victoria Home for the Disadvantaged Sri Lanka A co-donation of $5,000 was made towards equipment for the Victoria Home for Incurables. This was matched by the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Colombo and provided much needed equipment for the Home. In December,13 beds and 38 patient lockers were delivered and handed over in a ceremony where a plaque was unveiled to recognise the contribution from the Rotary Club of Adelaide West. PP Randolph coordinated the project by travelling to Sri Lanka, visiting the home and liaising with the local Rotary club. THE ROTARY FOUNDATION (TRF) A donation of $2,120 from Club funds enabled us to present PDG Alan Smith with two PHF ruby pins in recognition of his continuing support to The Rotary Foundation in general and the Foundation activities of our RC in particular. Alan has been instrumental in guiding us to the successful completion of the Sudan Water Project (see report below). The presentation to PDG Alan was made at the Club s 50th Anniversary Dinner in January. Sudan Villages Water Project Our Global Grant for the Sudan villages water project was successfully completed and signed off late last year. This was one of our Club s biggest Foundation projects which cost in excess of $150,000 and attracted a global grant of US$49,771. The Rotary Club of Khartoum (Host Co-sponsor Club) commenced planning in the 2009/10 Rotary year, however the completion of the project was delayed, in part by factors such as rain and political unrest in the region. Construction commenced in May 2011 and in August 2013, the work was completed. Two villages comprising over 8,000 people were supplied with a dam (hafir) each, water reticulation system, filtration plant, water storage tanks, pumps and motors to improve the villagers health, life and education prospects. 16

International Service Report presented by Ashleigh Lorraine... / continued The locals are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep and have been trained accordingly. The Rotary Club of Adelaide West co-sponsored the Rotary Club of Khartoum who undertook the project with selected local contractors. The Sudan club also obtained funds from the Government plus a further US$15,000 from six other Rotary clubs from Bahrain and other Gulf clubs as the Khartoum Club s finances were somewhat stretched. Improvements (at extra cost) were made during the construction phase of the project and this required extra funding. Ride to the Other Side This project initiated by the Rotary Club of Armidale, WA, supports Polio Plus, ARH Men s Health and EJ Whitten prostate research. They are riding a modified lawn mower around Australia with the aim of raising $3m for these very worthy causes. Our Club s funds (approximately US$25,000) for this project were budgeted and paid for in the 2011/12 Rotary year. The adventurous crew arrived in Adelaide in April and attended our meeting where fines totaling $60.35 were collected. A further Club contribution, making a total donation of $100 will be forwarded to them to add to their Polio Plus funds. The fundraising team s arrival in Adelaide marked the start of the third leg of their journey from Perth to Sydney where they subsequently arrived at the World Convention on 30th May. Club Support for The Rotary Foundation It is important that our Club supports our own charity, The Rotary Foundation, as this is the way in which the most collective good can be done throughout the world. In all, a highly successful project and we can be justly proud of our involvement and contribution. A particular thanks to PDG Alan Smith who did the lion s share of the coordination with RC Khartoum. TRF Collection Box At the beginning of the year, a Foundation donation box (mini wheelie bin!) was introduced and placed on the tables at our regular meetings. I am pleased to report that through the generous contributions of loose change from Rotarians, over $400 has been raised for The Rotary Foundation. A draw for four members to receive Centurion badges at $100 each will be conducted at the Changeover dinner and presented to the winners on the night. With District grants and Foundation grants, the value of our dollar can be multiplied. For example, currently every $100 contributed to Polio Plus becomes $300 when matched 2 for 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Whenever we try to improve someone s health, wellbeing or education, the Club should plan ahead to ascertain how we can maximize our funding for these projects and receive the grants available to us. My thanks to the Committee members for 2013/14 who gave valuable assistance to these aspects of the Club s programmes: Chair (to February): Heather Sloan (now RC Flagstaff Hill) PDG Alan Smith Ken Dorrington Randolph Alwis AM Geoff Beer Club members are encouraged to circulate the box on their table at each meeting and pass it over to the next table. 17

Bulletin Report presented by Editor John Madigan OAM Our Bulletin has again been recognised as a high quality document, and continues to attract comment not only by our own Club members, but as it is included fortnightly on our excellent website we receive high praise from around the world. Our 2014 refreshed Bulletin pictured below follows new style guidelines suggested by Rotary International. The original design was produced by Tania Macdonald who commenced in May She continued publishing the Bulletin until December 2013 when she returned to further University Studies. During this time Rotary Adelaide West won the District 9500 Bulletin Award in 2011/12, 2012/13. Both President Bill and I look forward to continuing our involvement in this portfolio during 2014/15. I extend my sincere thanks to President Bill General Manager of Katron Creative for his untiring energy in continuing this document which is an enormous undertaking for him to produce. Thanks also to Henk De Weerd for his excellent photos and all Club members who have produced editorials. Special thanks to Greehouse Media Kym Green for his sponsorship of the Bulletin and President Bill and the Katron Creative team for design and production since January this year. (far left) a 2013 issue of our Bulletin. Our many thanks to Tania Macdonald pictured here with Kobi. Tania put in a magnificent effort for 4 years working with John Madigan to craft our Award winning Bulletin. 18

Fundraising & Fellowship Report presented by Claus Weber Rotary Auto Alley - Clipsal 500 V8 Supercars Race An idea to run a motor swap meet at Clipsal 500 expanded rapidly when we bounced the idea off their Management. They were very excited at the prospect and that it would be run by an experienced group such as Rotary. Rotary Auto Alley was born... a concept to activate a 100 metre long strip of land within the track, with 25 to 30 displays by local businesses down either side. We would on-sell the space to traders. Christmas in July at the Bombay Bicycle Club on Thursday 17 July will be next. This has been organised to replace a normal meeting and it is hoped that our membership will endorse these types of fun fellowship events during the next year. IFMR National President As President of the International Fellowship of Motorcycling Rotarians (IFMR) I have attended a number of events this year including Miles for Smiles an Interplast project, Psych s on Bikes an Australian Rotary Health project, Swan Hill Meet and Greet ride, for the motorcycling fellowship and the Rotary International World Convention, where I organised the promotional booth for the IFMR in Billabong House. There are a number of other motorcyclists in Adelaide West Club including Michael Dodd, Simon Mills, Tony List and Lara Winsor. The idea was initially intended for 2015 however at Clipsal 500 s request, brought forward to 2014 with only a 6 week window of opportunity to secure potential customers. Unfortunately, the short timeframe made it extremely difficult for customers who had already locked into other promotional opportunities to participate, although much interest was received. We chose to hold off until Our Steering Committee gathered together information, experience, sales collateral and plans for 2015, ready to kick off sales in July 2014, giving a 7 month sales lead time. This will offer more time for businesses to organise their budgets and plan their displays. Where possible I have tried to involve Adelaide West Rotary members. The Miles for Smiles ride stopped at the Radio 5EBI studios for an interview with Club member David Sabine and Station Manager Kym Green. The potential for our Club is to raise a lot of funds for our charitable projects, plus considerably raise awareness of Rotary and our Club. Fellowship Expressions of interest where sought from Club members regarding going to the Clare Gourmet Weekend in May 2014 as a fun and fellowship opportunity. A good response was received from members at a Club meeting and a following online survey. From this, Bus company quotes were requested to transport members to and from Clare. Unfortunately, when members were asked to then commit to the bus deposit etc. many did not follow through, necessitating cancellation which was very disappointing. Christmas in July will be our next fellowship opportunity at the Psych s on Bikes is a group of psychology doctors and nurses riding from Perth to Sydney to raise awareness of suicide within our communities. Terry Davies the Corporate Manager of Australian Rotary Health had managed to secure sponsorship through Avida campers and they provided a support vehicle which was also on display at the Rotary World Convention in Sydney. 19

Finance Report presented by Eileen Fagioli It is just over a year ago that I was invited to join the Rotary Club of Adelaide West. Being a qualified Bookkeeper I also landed the position of Treasurer. A big thank you goes out to Ashleigh who mentored me in the first few months, explaining what was needed in order to be able to provide the various specific reports required for a Rotary Club. A not-for-profit organisation is far different from a business. One of the first jobs was to restructure the database and I find myself still doing so as I continue to learn about Rotary. I have happily again accepted the position of Treasurer of Rotary Adelaide West for the coming year. I look forward to the challenges and pleasures it presents. Club fundraising is growing but needs to increase further. More assistance from our members is needed in this area, both in terms of time and ideas. There are several other fundraising projects currently underway and it would be nice to see them come to fruition to take the pressure off of reliance on telemarketing. One of these is Rotary Auto Alley to be held at Clipsal in I look forward to reporting on this in my report next year. Of note, we changed our Auditor last year and are now using Bartley Partners. Chris Overton, one of our members is a Partner in this firm and we are pleased to have their Audit department look after our needs. Many of you will remember that at this time last year we were helping Trina and David Sabine with their Winter Tea Dance fundraiser by collecting funds through our My Booking Manager system; however you will not see any mention of it in the reports, other than the second $1,000 donation we as a Club made. Whilst we did collect the ticket, donation and auction funds, they were held in trust and all money collected was passed onto the Sabines to be added to their total for payment to The Dreamin Foundation. The financial reports that follow outline where our money comes from and how we pay it out. Telemarketing took a nose dive this year due to the change of service provider and the unreliable information that had been supplied by the incumbent supplier. We are hoping for bigger and better things this coming year. Much of the funds held over from last year or collected from the final few weeks of our former telemarketing contract went out in fees to that provider. It is pleasing however that we were still able to assist various projects as listed on page 22 under Specific Projects. 20
