2 What s coming up? Meeting 2386, Tuesday, 26 February Due to the Clipsal 500 members should be aware of changed meeting days. Joint Meeting with Adelaide West, Adelaide South and Adelaide East at the Public Schools Club Since its inception in 1978, the annual South Australia Police Officer of the Year Award has sought to highlight the service provided to our community by the South Australia Police and recognises outstanding acts of courtesy, courage, kindness, understanding, compassion and devotion to duty by any member of the SA Police Department. Each year's winner is chosen by the Rotary Club of Unley from nominations received from individuals and groups in the community. This prestigious award is presented at a public ceremony held in Rundle Mall, Adelaide, usually in May. Stephen Westgarth Meeting 2387, Thursday, 7 March Final discussion before Conference 14 March 2 No meeting as members are attending the District Conference in Bendigo.
3 What s been happening? Meeting 2384, 14 February Speaker: DGN John Campbell Topic: Membership Review John Madigan DGN John spoke with enthusiasm about membership and his lasting impressions of a presentation he attended given by Rotary International Director Stuart Heal on Changing Rotary. He said clubs must be able to make change and take notice of our environment, and questioned what we can do to improve and adapt to these situations. We must look around and see what others are doing for example the new website (produced by Bill Marles ) indicates we must change. DGN John Campbell Rotary must look forward, be more involved, plan and encourage young people, be bolder and more vibrant in outlook and now the emphasis is less on attendance but on new ideas and expansion. John gave us a new look at Rotary and the need for change. His presentation was enthusiastically received. 3 A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don t need it. Bob Hope I stopped believing in Santa Clause when my mother took me to him in a department store, and he asked me for my autograph. Shirley Temple
4 Meeting 2385, 21 February Speaker: Rebecca Wessels, Project Manager, Australian Refugee Association & Youth Jet Review Henry Pecanek Mission Statement: To provide refugees arrived in Australia with social, educational and emergency help support, so as to integrate more easily. Objectives: To provide youth tutoring one on one To provide social support Including in home English tutoring plus basic skills such as grocery shopping To provide help desk / emergency support. Project Manager Ms Rebecca Wessels provided Rotarians with an empathetic presentation bringing reality to the situation faced by refugees. Particularly interesting was that many refugees did not want to be perceived as sad stories. A DVD created by youth clients conveyed humour as well as the challenges. Stories from refugees from Bhutan, Congo and South Sudan for example conveyed culture shock as to how lifts transformed people just by going in and then out after the doors reopened; a question as to how 5 plus 5 =11?; and just bring a plate was not meant literally! ARA comprised 30 staff but also 300 volunteers in South Australia. Clients number about 150 youths alone, with about twice as many adults. Members from Adelaide West can help in a number of ways. Even items of furniture, clothes, education support and help finding employment are ways to help. Partnerships in projects are also am option. Whilst the funding is for refugees ARA tries to help asylum seekers also but not within detention centres. This has become more relevant since government changes since August All members showed Rebecca their great appreciation. Television - is a medium. So called because it is neither rare or well done. Ernie Kovacs 4
